Quick answer
How does skip tracing in Colorado work?
A skip trace starts with lawful databases and public records to build a list of likely current addresses, employers and phone numbers. The strongest leads are then confirmed in person, because Colorado's fast-growing suburbs, seasonal resort jobs and student housing make records go stale quickly. Attorneys usually pair the result with our Colorado process serving coordination.
01The problem
Why Colorado Addresses Go Stale So Quickly
Colorado keeps growing, and people move inside it constantly. Census estimates show Weld County growing about 15 percent and Douglas County about 12 percent between 2020 and 2025, much of it in new subdivisions that databases are slow to capture. A defendant who lived in Thornton last spring may rent in Brighton now. Many Front Range cities also cross county lines: Aurora spans Arapahoe, Adams and Douglas counties, so we confirm the county for every address, and our Aurora locate team handles that daily. Thornton and Northglenn traces pass through our Thornton investigators.
Mountain and college towns create their own churn. Ski counties fill with seasonal workers each winter who share housing and leave in spring, and university towns such as Boulder, Fort Collins and Golden turn over student leases every August. Military households near Fort Carson, Peterson and Buckley relocate on orders. Each pattern leaves a trail in different records, so we choose sources by the kind of person we are looking for. College-town traces often run through our Longmont and Boulder County investigators.
- New subdivisions missing from databases
- Cities that span two or three counties
- Seasonal resort and student housing turnover
- Military moves on orders
02Sources
The Records Behind Skip Tracing in Colorado
Our remote trace uses commercial data sources accessed for a permissible purpose under federal law, then checks the results against Colorado public records. The Colorado Open Records Act lets any person request public records, including out-of-state requesters, with a presumed response time of three working days. County assessor and recorder files, court dockets, entity filings and registered agent listings at the Secretary of State fill gaps. A trace for a business owner often starts with the entity research by our corporate team team's entity research.
Criminal history can help confirm identity. The Colorado Bureau of Investigation's Internet Criminal History Check is a name-based search of Colorado records only, so we treat a hit as a lead to verify rather than proof. We never use pretexting to obtain phone, bank or utility records, and we comply with federal and Colorado privacy law. Results are delivered with each source named, so counsel knows how much weight an address can bear. Pricing for each tier is posted on our Colorado investigation pricing page, and a witness locate with background research adds history to the address.
03Field work
Confirming the Address in the Field
A database address is a probability, not a fact. Field confirmation means an investigator visits the address at the right time of day, observes vehicles and activity from the street, and where appropriate makes a careful pretext-free contact such as a neighbor conversation or a knock. Field-work skip traces start at $1,000 and are quoted in writing. In multi-unit buildings we record the unit and access details a server will need, which matters because the Denver Sheriff's civil unit returns papers that lack a complete address.
Geography sets the pace. A Front Range confirmation can often be done in one visit, but a cabin off a county road in Park County or a ranch on the Eastern Plains may need a planned trip, and winter conditions on I-70 and mountain highways can delay it. We tell you when weather affects a date and never guess at a mountain address. For Douglas County subdivisions we coordinate with our Douglas County process servers so a confirmed address is served quickly.
Sheriffs generally will not do this work for you. The Weld County Sheriff's civil unit, for example, states that it does not research addresses, and Larimer County's civil process unit says it does not skip trace. That leaves the locate to the party, which is why attorneys often order the trace and the serve together. Ski-town addresses in Vail, Avon and Eagle are handed to our Eagle County process servers once confirmed.
04Service rules
How a Locate Supports Service Under the Colorado Rules
Colorado's civil rules reward a documented search. Under C.R.C.P. 4(m), a defendant generally must be served within 63 days after the complaint is filed, or the court may dismiss without prejudice or set a deadline. Under C.R.C.P. 4(e)(1), papers may generally be left at the person's usual place of abode with a family member 18 or older, or at the workplace with a supervisor, secretary, bookkeeper, HR representative or managing agent. Knowing the employer can therefore open a second route, as our guide to serving legal papers in Colorado explains.
When personal service fails, C.R.C.P. 4(f) lets the court order substituted service, but the motion generally needs an affidavit from the person who attempted service describing the efforts and why they failed. Publication under C.R.C.P. 4(g) is narrower: it generally applies only in actions affecting specific property or status, runs once a week for five successive weeks, and requires a court order. A detailed trace and attempt log is what supports either motion. Difficult defendants are scoped as evasive person skip tracing.
05Case types
Who Colorado Clients Ask Us to Find
Attorneys ask for defendants, witnesses and heirs. Creditors ask for judgment debtors and the employers that make wage garnishment possible, work described on our Colorado debtor skip tracing page. Landlords ask for former tenants who left owing rent. Insurers ask for claimants and witnesses who stopped returning calls. Each request is checked for a lawful purpose before we start, and we decline locates that appear aimed at harming or harassing the person being sought.
Families ask for people who matter to them. A sibling who stopped calling, a birth relative or an old friend can often be found through records and careful outreach, as our lost contact skip tracing page describes. When someone may be in danger, the police come first: the Colorado Bureau of Investigation's Missing Persons Unit says local law enforcement must be notified before it can become involved. Private work then supplements the report, and our guide to finding a missing person in Colorado explains how.
06Beyond people
Tracing Vehicles, Equipment and Property
Skip tracing also applies to things. A financed truck that disappeared, a trailer of construction equipment or a vehicle seen leaving a collision can sometimes be traced through owner records, sightings and associated addresses, within the limits of the federal Driver's Privacy Protection Act. Collision cases are handled as hit-and-run skip tracing in Colorado, and missing equipment from job sites in Weld or Adams County is scoped as a stolen equipment investigation.
Recovery itself is not our role. We locate and document, then hand the information to the owner, the lender, counsel or law enforcement. We do not repossess vehicles, break into storage units or confront the person holding the property. When a vehicle crosses into Wyoming or New Mexico, our multistate reach lets us continue the trace, and the Wyoming investigations page describes coverage north of the border.
07Jurisdiction
Tribal Land, State Lines and Remote Communities
Two federally recognized tribes have reservations in southwest Colorado: the Southern Ute Indian Tribe, based in Ignacio, and the Ute Mountain Ute Tribe, based in Towaoc. Locating someone who lives on reservation land raises jurisdiction questions, and whether state process is effective there depends on the parties, the land status and the claim. We confirm the approach with counsel, and with the tribal court where needed, before any field contact. Southwest files are staffed through our Durango and La Plata County investigators.
Many people sought in Colorado have crossed a state line. The state borders Wyoming, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, New Mexico and Utah, and a subject may live in one state and work in another. Our trace follows the person, and the report notes which state's rules will govern service. Remote mountain communities on the Western Slope get the same attention, with field visits planned through our Arvada and west-metro locate team or the nearest assigned investigator. Grand Junction and Mesa County locates are confirmed through our Grand Junction team.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Is skip tracing legal in Colorado?
Yes, when it is done for a lawful purpose with lawful sources. Federal laws such as the FCRA, GLBA and the Driver's Privacy Protection Act limit how certain data may be used, and we confirm a permissible purpose before starting. We do not use pretexting to obtain protected records, and we decline searches that appear intended to harass or harm the person being located.
What does skip tracing in Colorado cost?
A basic remote skip trace is $102. A field-work skip trace, where an investigator confirms the address in person, starts at $1,000, and travel to remote mountain or plains locations is quoted in writing. You approve the price before any work begins. Our cost guide for Colorado investigations explains what drives the total.
Will a skip trace help me get substituted service in Colorado?
It can. C.R.C.P. 4(f) generally requires an affidavit from the person who attempted service describing the efforts made and why they failed. A documented trace, confirmed address and dated attempt log give the court the diligence record it looks for. Whether to file the motion, and what it should say, is a decision for your attorney.
Can I serve someone by publication in Colorado if I cannot find them?
Only in limited cases. Under C.R.C.P. 4(g), publication generally applies to actions affecting specific property or status, such as certain property and family matters, and requires a court order on a verified motion. The notice is published weekly for five consecutive weeks. Divorce cases have their own publication procedure under C.R.S. § 14-10-107. Counsel can confirm which route fits your case.
Will the sheriff find the person for me?
Generally not. Several Colorado sheriff's offices state that they do not research addresses or skip trace; they serve papers at the address you provide. That is why attorneys often order a trace before sending papers out, and why a confirmed address saves repeated service fees and missed deadlines. Our locate and serve service combines both steps.
Can you find someone who left Colorado?
Usually. Our trace follows the person across state lines, and Delator Group works in several states. The report will note where the person now lives and which state's service rules will apply. Out-of-state field confirmation is quoted separately in writing, and coverage north of the border is described on our Wyoming investigator page.
Should I call the police or a private investigator for a missing adult?
Call the police first if you believe the person may be in danger. The Colorado Bureau of Investigation's Missing Persons Unit only becomes involved after local law enforcement has been notified. A private investigator can then supplement the official search with records work, canvassing and outreach. Our missing person skip tracing service is built to work alongside the police, not around them.
How long does a Colorado skip trace take?
A remote trace is usually completed faster than field work, and we give you a realistic date with the written estimate. Field confirmation depends on location, the best time of day to find the person, and in winter the condition of mountain roads. If a court deadline is close, tell us the date on the first call so the plan fits it.
What information do you need to start?
As much as you have: full legal name, any aliases, date of birth or approximate age, last known address, phone numbers, email, vehicle, employer, relatives and social media accounts. Even partial information can work, but every extra identifier reduces the chance of locating the wrong person with a similar name. Debt files are handled through our judgment debtor locates.
Will the person know they are being located?
Remote work leaves no trace the person can see. Field confirmation is done discreetly from public places, and any contact is made carefully and without pretext. In reunion cases we reach out only in a way that lets the found person decide whether to respond, and we do not share their address without their consent.
