Quick answer
How do I hire a process server in Chatham County?
Send us the filed papers, each known address, and the date that matters most. We confirm the Chatham court involved and how it handles that paper, set the tier and price in writing, and log every attempt. Routine service in the county is published from $125, and the Georgia service price map lists the other tiers.
01Local service landscape
Port Roads, Historic Squares and Marsh Causeways
Chatham County has about 312,000 residents (2025 estimate) in eight cities and several large unincorporated communities. Savannah's Historic District, the growing west side around Pooler, the industrial port corridor in Garden City and Port Wentworth, and the island communities toward Tybee each need a different plan. Our Savannah process serving page covers the city in more depth, including the Historic District.
Interstate 16 ends at Montgomery Street downtown, and its interchange with I-95 in Pooler near the airport is the hinge for most west-side attempts. The islands are reached by causeways and bridges over tidal marsh, so a missed attempt on Tybee or Skidaway costs more time than one in midtown. We sequence island addresses carefully and note access in the log. The Georgia rate map shows Chatham's tier, and Delator Group's background explains why the log matters so much to us.
- Downtown and the Historic District
- West side: Pooler, Bloomingdale, Garden City, Port Wentworth
- Southside, Georgetown and Vernonburg
- Islands: Wilmington, Skidaway, Isle of Hope, Tybee

What Savannah Counsel Need From a Server
Savannah's civil bar handles everything from maritime and logistics disputes to personal injury, real estate and family cases, and firms from Atlanta and other states file here when a defendant is in Chatham. Counsel generally want service made promptly, the affidavit returned within the proof window and plain-language updates. Our intake process for attorneys lists the details that speed up a Chatham file.
Port and logistics businesses are frequent defendants, along with hospitality companies serving the tourism trade. We serve an officer, a managing agent at the Georgia facility or the registered agent, and explain the Secretary of State fallback when those fail. Cases filed in another state are matched to that court's rule, as described on our page for papers from outside Georgia.
03Evasive and hard-to-serve
Island Gates, Short-Term Rentals and Seasonal Residents
Chatham has gated island communities, condominium buildings and many short-term rentals, where the person named on the papers may not be the person answering the door. Georgia allows an authorized server reasonable entry to a gated or secured community after identifying the person to be served and showing photo ID and proof of appointment. We plan that step before the drive across the causeway, and rush pricing for Chatham deadlines is quoted in writing.
Seasonal residents and people who split time between Savannah and another home can be hard to catch. We ask counsel about any second address, vary days and hours, and record each attempt with what the server observed. If the court is later asked about another method, that log is the support, and you can call us to talk through a difficult Chatham file first. Our guidance on evasive parties and hard-to-serve service explain more.
- Gated island neighborhoods
- Condominiums and short-term rentals
- Seasonal and second-home residents
- Every visit recorded with observations

Savannah Divorce Filings, Magistrate Claims and Dispossessories
Divorce and custody filings in Chatham Superior Court are served under the Civil Practice Act, so personal service, abode service or a signed acknowledgment are the usual options. We deliver them with discretion and confirm identity before handing anything over. Chatham Magistrate Court hears civil claims of $15,000 or less, and our magistrate court service page explains how out-of-county defendants are reached by second original.
Chatham Magistrate Court posts a standing order titled Private Process Servers that references O.C.G.A. 15-10-43; we read the current version with counsel before relying on it. Separately, the dispossessory statute amended in 2025, O.C.G.A. 44-7-51, mentions an approved process server without defining it, so we confirm the court's practice before accepting one and never carry out writs. See Georgia dispossessory papers and Chatham subpoena service.
05Documentation and challenges
A Return That Stands Up in the Eastern Circuit
Proof of service in Georgia must give the date, place and manner of service, and a private server proves it by affidavit filed with the court where the action is pending. Until proof is filed, the answer period generally does not begin. We return a signed affidavit promptly so counsel can file within the five business days O.C.G.A. 9-11-4(h) contemplates. Our Georgia service steps guide lists what it should include.
Chatham challenges often involve whether a rental occupant actually resided at the address, who accepted papers for a company, or whether attempts were diligent enough before a limitation date. Our notes are written during each attempt, so counsel can answer with specifics. Georgia courts may allow proof to be amended where no material prejudice results. Get in touch with our team if a supplemental affidavit is needed.
06Georgia service rules
The Georgia Rules Behind a Savannah Serve
Georgia's Civil Practice Act, at O.C.G.A. 9-11-4(c), lists who may serve: a sheriff or deputy, a marshal, a citizen specially appointed by the court, a non-party adult appointed by the court or as a permanent process server, and a certified process server under 9-11-4.1. A certified server may work only where the county sheriff accepts a yearly notice of intent. The who can serve guide covers each route.
DFS does not claim any certification or appointment in Chatham or elsewhere in Georgia. For each file, we assign a server who meets the issuing court's requirements for that paper and confirm it in writing before accepting the serve. Where the court does not accept private service for a paper type, we tell you and the papers go to the Sheriff. Our Georgia service hub has the statewide summary.

Federal Cases, Hunter Army Airfield and the Coast
Savannah hosts the Southern District of Georgia's Savannah Division, whose clerk's office is at 8 Southern Oaks Court, with mail directed to Barnard Street. Federal summonses and subpoenas served in Chatham follow the federal rules, and we prepare the affidavit for that court. The division also covers Bryan, Effingham and Liberty counties, so related defendants may be close by. Our Statesboro coverage reaches inland along I-16.
Hunter Army Airfield sits within Savannah, and any attempt on an installation is coordinated with counsel first because base access rules control it. Before a default, federal law requires an affidavit about whether the defendant is in military service. Coastal weather also matters: storms can close causeways and delay island attempts. Cases reaching west toward Augusta use Richmond County service.

Process Servers Near Chatham County
Chatham anchors the Georgia coast, and many of its cases reach inland. The city itself is covered in detail by our Savannah servers, and Bulloch County addresses along I-16 are handled through Statesboro process service. For defendants farther away, Augusta papers and attempts and Valdosta coverage reach the eastern and southern parts of the state. Every page uses the same written quote, logged attempts and signed affidavit, so a case with defendants in Savannah and Augusta still reads as one file.
FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Who can serve legal papers in Chatham County?
Georgia generally permits a sheriff or deputy, a marshal, a court-appointed or permanent process server, or a certified server whose notice of intent the Chatham Sheriff accepts. Which a court takes can depend on the paper. Chatham Magistrate Court also has a standing order on private process servers. We assign a qualified server and confirm it in writing first.
How much does a process server in Chatham County charge?
Routine service in Chatham carries a published starting rate of $125. Urgent costs 1.5 times Routine, Rush is double and Same Day Rush is triple. The final price depends on the address, the deadline and the documents, and it is confirmed in writing before the first attempt. Island addresses are quoted the same way.
Can you serve someone on Tybee Island or Skidaway Island?
Yes. Island addresses are part of Chatham County and are served like any other, but they take more planning because of causeway travel, gated communities and seasonal occupancy. We group island attempts, note access conditions in the log, and tell you if weather delays a visit. Pricing is the same as the mainland, as the Chatham tier on our rate page shows.
Is a short-term rental guest a valid abode recipient?
Generally not. Abode service under O.C.G.A. 9-11-4(e)(7) requires leaving papers at the defendant's dwelling with a person of suitable age and discretion who resides there. A vacation guest or property manager usually is not a resident. We record who answered and why the papers were or were not left, so counsel can decide the next step.
Will you serve a dispossessory in Chatham?
Not until the Chatham Magistrate Court's present practice is confirmed. Georgia's 2025 amendment lists an approved process server for dispossessories without defining it, and Chatham's court also has a standing order on private servers. Writs and set-outs are not something we do. The Georgia eviction service guide explains the 7-day answer and the posting-and-mailing fallback.
How are federal papers served in Savannah?
Federal summonses and subpoenas from the Southern District of Georgia, or from other federal courts, are served under the federal rules. We prepare the affidavit for the federal court. The Savannah Division clerk's office is at 8 Southern Oaks Court, and mail goes to 124 Barnard Street, so check filings against the court's own instructions.
Can you serve a soldier stationed at Hunter Army Airfield?
Whether a server can attempt service on an installation depends on base access rules, which is why we coordinate with counsel before any attempt there. Off-base homes in Savannah, Richmond Hill or Pooler are served normally, with the usual attempt log. Before a default judgment, the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act requires an affidavit stating whether the defendant is in military service, which counsel prepares, often using the Defense Manpower Data Center's SCRA website that the Justice Department identifies for checking status.
What if a Chatham defendant has left Georgia?
Georgia allows publication when a defendant resides outside the state, has departed it, cannot be found after due diligence or is concealing himself, under O.C.G.A. 9-11-4(f)(1). Personal service outside Georgia can often replace publication, and the defendant then generally has 30 days to answer. Our publication overview explains the clerk's notice schedule and the 60-day answer period.
Do you deliver divorce papers in Chatham County?
Yes. We serve divorce and custody papers personally or at the residence, quietly and with identity confirmed. Many spouses sign an acknowledgment instead, which avoids a visit and often lowers tension. Our family papers service covers both. Our guide to divorce service in Georgia explains the options and the waiting period counsel should confirm.
How fast is the Chatham affidavit returned?
We return it promptly after service, so counsel can file within the five business days O.C.G.A. 9-11-4(h) generally allows. If proof is late, service stays valid, but the defendant's time to answer does not start until proof is filed. For hearings that are close, our faster Georgia service tiers explain the options.
