Quick answer
How do I hire a process server in Henrico County?
Send the filed papers, all known addresses and the date your case turns on. We check whether each address is in Henrico or the City of Richmond, since the two share many ZIP codes, then quote the tier in writing and log each attempt. Routine starts at a published $125, and service inside Richmond has its own page.
01Local service landscape
A County That Wraps Around the Capital
Henrico had 334,961 residents in 2020 and an estimated 342,775 in 2025 (secondary). It has no incorporated towns, and it curves around the City of Richmond on three sides. That geography makes the locality check essential: a Glen Allen or Lakeside home may carry a Richmond mailing address and still belong to Henrico's courts and sheriff. We confirm the jurisdiction before quoting, and our Virginia county-by-county rates list Henrico and the city separately.
The west end is dense and commercial, with Short Pump retail, the Innsbrook office park and apartment communities along West Broad Street. North of the city, Lakeside and Laurel are older suburbs. East Henrico, from Highland Springs and Sandston out to Varina, mixes postwar neighborhoods, airport-area industry and open land along the James. A defendant who crossed the river is served through Chesterfield County deliveries under the same quote.
- West end offices, retail and apartments
- Older northside neighborhoods
- East end suburbs and the airport area
- River land in Varina
02Attorneys and law firms
Serving for the Parham Road Docket and the Richmond Federal Court
Henrico litigators file at the court complex on East Parham Road, and federal matters go a few miles south to the Richmond Division courthouse on East Broad Street. Many of the region's firms also sit in Henrico's west end office parks. They expect a server who reports after every attempt and returns paperwork that the clerk accepts the first time. Our Virginia law firm intake page sets out what we ask for.
Out-of-state firms often need a Henrico witness or defendant connected to the region's insurers, banks, health systems or distribution operations. When the case is pending in another state, we serve under that court's rule and draft the affidavit to match, as our service for foreign-court papers explains. When a related party lives north in Mechanicsville or Ashland, we handle it through Hanover County service.
03Evasive and hard-to-serve
Apartment Gates, Office Lobbies and Defendants on the Move
Henrico's west end has many gated apartment communities and secured office buildings. We do not follow residents through gates or talk past a reception desk. Instead, we note the access point, ask the leasing office or desk whether the person can come out, and log the answer. Some defendants move between apartments every lease cycle, so we confirm a current address with counsel before attempts begin. Our Virginia evasive-party service page explains the routine, and Delator Group's company story explains why we document it so closely.
When repeated visits fail, Va. Code § 8.01-296 sets out what comes next. Papers may be left with a family member who is 16 or older, lives at the usual abode and is not a temporary guest; if that fails, they may be posted at the front door or main entrance. The filing party then mails a copy and files a certificate at least 10 days before default, as our Virginia substituted service guide explains.
- Leasing office and front desk answers logged
- Current address confirmed before attempts
- Visits spread across weekdays and Saturdays
- Substituted service only to a qualified household member
04Domestic, rental, debt and witness papers
Henrico Divorce, Custody, Rental and Subpoena Work
A Henrico divorce is filed in the Circuit Court, and custody, visitation and support petitions start in the county's J&DR court. Va. Code § 20-99.1:1 lets a spouse accept service by signing a proof of service before an officer authorized to administer oaths, or by a notarized writing, which can make a doorstep delivery unnecessary. We bring that paperwork when counsel asks, and the Virginia divorce papers guide explains the options.
Apartment-heavy areas mean a steady flow of unlawful detainer cases in the General District Court. Va. Code § 8.01-126 permits private delivery of that summons and requires service at least 10 days before the return day; a Henrico deputy executes any writ. The court also hears warrants in debt and small claims, which our small claims service in Virginia page covers, and we handle records and witness subpoenas countywide.
05Documentation and challenges
Henrico Returns Built Around Va. Code § 8.01-325
Each private-server return we prepare for Henrico includes what Va. Code § 8.01-325 requires: the server's affidavit of qualifications, the date and manner of service, the name of the person served, a printed note that a private server made the service, and the server's name, address and phone number. The return goes to the clerk within 72 hours. Our guide to serving legal papers in Virginia explains each requirement.
In apartment cases, a challenge often asks whether posting happened at the defendant's door or at a building entrance, and whether the person who took the papers really lived in the unit. Our log notes the unit number, the door used and the person's stated relationship and age. If the defendant keeps dodging, the page on Virginia defendants who avoid service outlines the steps counsel may consider.
06Virginia service rules
Who May Serve and What Stays With Henrico Deputies
Under Va. Code § 8.01-293, process may be served by a sheriff or by any person 18 or older who is not a party or otherwise interested in the case, and a private process server is such an adult who charges a fee. There is no Virginia license or registration for private servers. DFS assigns only adults who meet that test, and each one swears to it on the return. Our Virginia server eligibility page explains the rule.
Officers keep several acts: executing writs of possession or eviction, levying on property, serving capiases and show cause orders, and serving protective orders. Sunday service of civil process is not allowed under Va. Code § 8.01-289. Circuit court responses are generally due 21 days after service, per Rule 3:8(a). If you are unsure about a paper, send DFS a question first.

The I-295 Loop and a Commute That Crosses Lines
Interstates 64, 95 and 295 all pass through Henrico, and I-295 forms an outer loop around its northern and eastern edges. Many residents commute into the city, to Chesterfield or west to Goochland each day. We plan attempts by corridor, pairing west end stops with each other and east end stops with each other, so a deadline is not lost to traffic. Defendants who left for the Peninsula go through service in Williamsburg.
Eastern Henrico around Sandston and the airport has warehouses and shift-based employers, and some defendants are easiest to reach between shifts. Western Henrico workers may keep regular office hours in Innsbrook or along West Broad Street. We ask counsel about known schedules and plan visits around them. Moves toward the Piedmont fall under Charlottesville city coverage, and those up I-95 under Fredericksburg process service.

- 14th Circuit covers Henrico alone
- Federal: Richmond Division, 701 E. Broad St.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a Richmond, VA mailing address in Henrico?
Often it is. Henrico surrounds the City of Richmond on three sides, and many county neighborhoods use Richmond ZIP codes. The city is a separate locality with its own courts and sheriff, so we confirm the jurisdiction before quoting. That keeps the return consistent with the court that issued the papers and avoids a misfiled proof.
What does Henrico process service cost?
Routine service in Henrico County has a published starting rate of $125. In Henrico, Urgent runs one and a half times Routine, Rush runs double and Same Day Rush runs triple. Your price depends on the address, the deadline and the number of people to serve, and we confirm it in writing first.
Can a private server deliver Henrico court papers?
Yes. Under Va. Code § 8.01-293, any person 18 or older who is not a party or otherwise interested in the case may serve most civil process. No Virginia license applies. Sheriffs and other officers keep writs of eviction, levies, capiases and protective orders. Our guide to Virginia process servers explains the line.
Can papers be posted on an apartment door?
Under Va. Code § 8.01-296, posting is allowed at the front door or main entrance of the defendant's usual place of abode after delivery to a qualified family member is not possible. For an apartment, that generally means the unit's own door. Counsel then mails a copy and files a certificate at least 10 days before default.
Who serves the eviction writ in Henrico?
A Henrico sheriff's deputy. Va. Code § 8.01-293(B) reserves execution of writs of possession and eviction to sheriffs and high constables, and the officer gives at least 72 hours' notice under § 8.01-470. DFS delivers the unlawful detainer summons only and never announces or carries out a removal. Our Virginia unlawful detainer guide explains the steps.
How long do I have to serve a Henrico lawsuit?
Under Va. Code § 8.01-275.1, service within 12 months of filing is timely, and later service is timely only if the court finds the plaintiff exercised due diligence. Rule 3:5(e) adds a similar bar on judgment. Starting service early leaves room for second and third attempts at an address that turns out to be stale.
How do you serve an out-of-state company with a Henrico office?
A foreign corporation authorized in Virginia can be served through an officer, director or registered agent under Va. Code § 8.01-301, wherever found in the state. We confirm the registered agent with counsel first, because a branch office may not have anyone authorized to accept. Our business service page has more detail.
Can you serve a foreign subpoena on a Henrico witness?
Yes, once it is domesticated. Under Virginia's version of the Uniform Interstate Depositions and Discovery Act, the foreign subpoena goes to the clerk of the circuit court where discovery will take place, and the clerk may require a sworn attestation. The clerk then issues a Virginia subpoena, which we serve under Virginia rules.
Do you serve papers on Sundays in Henrico?
No. Va. Code § 8.01-289 bars service of civil process on Sunday except in narrow situations involving escape from custody. We use weekday evenings and Saturdays instead, which often suits defendants who work office hours in the west end. When the calendar is tight, our same-day service tiers can help.
What if the defendant works at a hospital or large employer?
We can attempt workplace service where the employer lets a visitor reach the person or the person comes to a public area. We do not enter patient areas, secure floors or restricted zones, as our Henrico-area hard-to-reach service page notes. Each exchange is logged, and if the workplace will not work, we shift to home attempts at hours that fit the defendant's schedule.
