Quick answer

How do I hire a process server in Lakewood?

Send the filed papers, the Lakewood address and any detail about the person's routine. We confirm the Jefferson County address, the service tier and the price in writing, then assign a server who logs every visit. Routine service in Jefferson County has a published starting rate of $125, and the Colorado process serving rate map lists the mountain counties to the west.

01Local service landscape

Serving Papers Between the Denver Line and the Foothills

Lakewood had an estimated 157,000 residents in 2025, and Jefferson County about 580,000, a slight decline since 2020. The city runs from apartment blocks along West Colfax and Wadsworth to townhomes near Belmar and larger homes on Green Mountain. Its eastern edge meets Denver at Sheridan Boulevard, and a block can decide whether a case belongs in Golden or downtown. Papers that turn out to belong east of the line go to Denver process service. Residents with family in Arvada or Westminster can be reached through our Arvada investigators.

West of Lakewood the land rises fast. Morrison, Evergreen and Conifer sit up canyon roads where snow can close a driveway while the city is dry, and US 285 is on the state's commercial chain-law list from Morrison south. Servers plan foothill attempts around daylight and weather, and our Lakewood investigators can confirm whether a defendant still lives at a mountain address before a long drive.

02Attorneys and law firms

Support for West Metro Firms Filing in Golden

Jefferson County cases are filed at the combined court on Jefferson County Parkway in Golden, the county seat just northwest of Lakewood. West-metro firms send us personal injury claims, contract disputes, HOA collection suits, guardianship and probate notices, and employment cases. Attorney support from Delator in Colorado gives each firm one contact for the written price, the field log and the signed return.

Denver firms and out-of-state counsel often have a single Lakewood witness or defendant to reach. We read the packet first, flag a case that may have been filed in the wrong county, and confirm whether the person is at home, at work or both. When the witness has to be found before service, locating witnesses and lost contacts runs in parallel, and jury pool research can support trial teams preparing for Golden.

03Evasive and hard-to-serve

Commuters, Controlled Workplaces and Defendants Who Disappear West

Many Lakewood residents work at government offices, hospitals and corporate campuses, or commute downtown, leaving early and returning late, so weekday midday attempts often fail. Controlled-access workplaces also limit what a server can do there. We focus attempts at the residence in early mornings, evenings and weekends, log every visit with its result, and report when a building or gate blocks access so counsel can decide on alternatives.

Some defendants move west into the foothills or across county lines to avoid being found. Delator investigators can take over through tracing people who avoid service, and the attempt log becomes the server's affidavit if counsel asks the court for substituted service under C.R.C.P. 4(f). Collection counsel pursuing a judgment can also use Colorado debtor locates and asset investigations to find where a debtor banks, works or holds property.

04Family law, evictions and subpoenas

Family, Eviction, Small Claims and Subpoena Service in Lakewood

Jefferson County divorce and parenting-time cases are generally heard in district court in Golden. Under C.R.S. 14-10-107, the respondent generally must be personally served unless they join the petition or waive service, and service also triggers the automatic temporary injunction on marital property, insurance and the children's travel. We record the exact time and place of delivery. Counsel can review investigations in Colorado parenting-time disputes.

Lakewood's rental stock along Colfax and Wadsworth produces a steady volume of FED cases in Jefferson County Court. The summons must generally be served personally, or posted after diligent attempts with the plaintiff mailing a copy, at least seven days before the appearance. Only the sheriff executes a writ of restitution; Delator never performs lockouts. Small claims papers need 15 days before trial, and tenant background checks help landlords choose carefully.

05Documentation

What Stands Behind a Jefferson County Return

Each Lakewood return states that the server is 18 or older and not a party, identifies the documents, and gives the date, time, place and manner of service on the pattern of the JDF 98 Affidavit of Service. It is backed by a log of every attempt, including failed visits, with what the server observed. Serves may be carried out by vetted servers Delator contracts with, all held to one written standard, with the price confirmed in writing.

When a defendant moves to quash service, the record lets counsel show exactly what happened, whether delivery was personal, on a family member at least 18 at the home, on a listed workplace contact, or after a refusal under C.R.C.P. 4(k). If the challenge turns into a broader factual dispute, investigative consulting and insurance claim surveillance can help counsel develop the record.

06Colorado rules

Colorado Service Rules for Lakewood Papers

Colorado does not require process servers to hold a license. C.R.C.P. 4(d) generally opens service to anyone at least 18 years old who is not a party. C.R.C.P. 4(e)(1) allows personal delivery, abode service on a member of the person's family who is 18 or older, workplace service on a supervisor, secretary, administrative assistant, bookkeeper, human resources representative or managing agent, and service on an authorized agent. The Colorado process serving overview summarizes these methods.

C.R.C.P. 4(m) generally requires service within 63 days after the complaint is filed. Defendants generally answer within 21 days, or 35 days if served out of state or by publication, and publication itself is limited to property and status cases by court order. Proof can be a sworn or unsworn declaration under C.R.C.P. 4(h). These are summaries, not legal advice, and the Colorado serving guide and rules on recording conversations add context.

Jeffco Sheriff Fees, Missing Persons and the I-70 Gateway

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office Civil Unit, in Suite 1520 at 100 Jefferson County Parkway in Golden, posts its fees openly: a standard serve per person plus mileage billed by ZIP code, and an added charge for a second serve at the same address. Those published sheriff fees are a useful benchmark. A private server is an alternative when a filer wants varied hours, rush tiers or an investigator to confirm the address first.

The Colorado Bureau of Investigation's Missing Persons Unit is based on Kipling Street in Lakewood, and CBI requires local law enforcement to be notified before it becomes involved. Families should start there; private locate work supplements police reports. The I-70 traction-law corridor begins at Morrison, just west of Lakewood, and papers headed up to Silverthorne or Breckenridge are quoted through Summit County process serving, while missing family member searches help relatives.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a process server in Lakewood need a license?

No. Colorado does not license process servers, and C.R.C.P. 4(d) generally allows any person 18 or older who is not a party to serve. Since no agency screens servers, ask about documentation and insurance. Our vetting guide for Colorado providers suggests questions to ask before you hire anyone for field work.

How much does it cost to serve papers in Lakewood?

Routine service in Jefferson County has a published starting rate of $125. Urgent work in Lakewood starts at $188, with Rush at $250 and Same Day Rush at $375. Gilpin County starts at $155 and Clear Creek at $150. The address, the timeline and the number of recipients determine the final price, always confirmed in writing beforehand.

Is Lakewood in Jefferson County or Denver?

Lakewood is in Jefferson County, and its cases are generally filed at the Jefferson Combined Court in Golden. Denver begins at the city's eastern edge along Sheridan Boulevard, and a few blocks can change the county. We confirm the county of each address because it determines the court, the sheriff and the rate.

Where do I file the affidavit for a Lakewood serve?

Always with the court that issued your papers. Jefferson County District and County Court cases are filed at 100 Jefferson County Parkway in Golden. If the case came from Denver or another county, file with that clerk. The Arraj Courthouse clerk in Denver takes federal filings. Our affidavit names the issuing court for clarity.

Can papers be left with someone at a Lakewood home?

Yes, if that person is a member of the defendant's family, is 18 or older, and the home is the defendant's usual place of abode, under C.R.C.P. 4(e)(1). An unrelated roommate or a visitor generally does not qualify. Our server records the recipient's name or description and relationship so the court can evaluate the service.

What if the defendant works on a secured campus?

Servers do not force their way into controlled workplaces. If security will not allow a visitor to reach the person, we try the residence at varied hours. C.R.C.P. 4(e)(1) also generally permits leaving papers with a supervisor or human resources representative at the usual workplace, when they can be reached. Every attempt is logged for counsel.

Do you serve in Golden, Morrison and Evergreen?

Yes. Golden, Morrison, Evergreen, Conifer, Wheat Ridge and Edgewater are all in Jefferson County, so Routine starts at the same $125 published rate. Mountain addresses can take longer in winter, and we tell you when weather affects an attempt rather than promising a turnaround time. Our Westminster investigators cover the north end of the county.

How long does a Lakewood defendant have to answer?

Typically 21 days from the date of service under C.R.C.P. 12(a), or 35 days if the defendant was served out of state or by publication. FED and small claims cases follow their own appearance dates. Calendar from the service date on our affidavit and confirm the deadline with counsel, and see Colorado missing person guidance if the defendant cannot be found.

Can I hire a server instead of the Jefferson County sheriff?

Yes. Colorado generally allows any qualified adult non-party to serve, so filers can choose the sheriff or a private server. The Jefferson County Sheriff publishes per-person fees plus mileage. A private server offers flexible timing and rush tiers. Only the sheriff carries out writs of restitution, and workplace theft investigations are a separate matter.

Is Delator Group based in Lakewood?

No. Based in Nashville, Delator Group is a licensed Tennessee private investigation firm, and it has no Lakewood location. It coordinates service in Lakewood and Jefferson County through vetted servers held to one documentation standard. It works to Tennessee's licensing standard in every state. The Colorado investigation services hub describes its investigative work across the state.
