Quick answer

What does a private investigator cost in South Dakota?

At Delator Group, most South Dakota field work is $100 per hour. Defined matters carry minimums, such as $1,000 for civil litigation support or an asset investigation and $2,000 for a scam investigation. Remote reports are priced per product, from $102. Every quote is written and approved before work starts. Our South Dakota service pricing page lists each rate.

01The base rate

What the $100 Hourly Rate Covers in South Dakota

Delator's standard investigative rate in South Dakota is $100 per hour, the same rate the firm charges in Tennessee. It applies to field work such as surveillance, interviews, canvassing, records retrieval at a courthouse and the report writing that follows. An investigator who spends six hours watching a residence in Brandon and one hour writing it up has worked seven billable hours. Most surveillance investigations in South Dakota are estimated this way, by the block of time needed to see what matters.

Because South Dakota has no state private investigator license, there is no regulated fee schedule and prices vary widely between providers. Some advertise low hourly figures and then add charges for every mile, photo or phone call. We prefer a single clear rate and an honest estimate of hours. When a task is better done remotely, we say so, because a database search does not need a field investigator. The firm behind these prices explains how we staff cases.

02Defined matters

Case Minimums for Common South Dakota Investigations

Some assignments always require a baseline of work, so they carry published minimums instead of a pure hourly estimate. Criminal defense investigations start at $750 for a misdemeanor, $1,000 for a single felony and $1,500 for multiple charges or enhanced exposure. Civil litigation support carries a $1,000 minimum, as does an asset investigation. A field-work skip trace starts at $1,000, and criminal defense investigation clients see those figures in writing before anything is assigned.

Other categories follow the same logic. Audits, including compliance, fraud-risk and emergency-preparedness reviews, start at $1,200. Abuse investigations, such as nursing home or correctional facility cases, start at $1,500. Scam investigations, including crypto, elder, contractor and vehicle fraud, start at $2,000 because tracing payments and finding other victims takes time. Hours beyond the minimum are billed at $100 each. Our fraud risk audits and elder scam investigations both use this structure.

  • Misdemeanor defense: $750+
  • Single felony defense: $1,000+
  • Multiple charges or enhanced exposure: $1,500+
  • Civil litigation support and asset work: $1,000 minimum
  • Audits: $1,200+ and abuse cases: $1,500+
  • Scam investigations: $2,000+

03Per-report pricing

Remote Reports Priced Per Product

Not every question needs someone on the ground. Remote work is priced per product: a basic background check is $102, a deep-dive background check is $300, a basic database skip trace is $102, a due diligence report is $300 and an OSINT personal information wipe is $900. These figures are Delator's Tennessee prices plus 20 percent for out-of-state work. A landlord screening an applicant can often stop at a tenant background check without ever paying hourly field rates.

Remote reports are a sensible first step in many cases. A $102 skip trace may locate a debtor before anyone pays for a $1,000 field locate. A $300 deep dive on a prospective business partner can reveal judgments and prior entities that end a deal before it starts. If the report raises questions, the information carries forward into any field work. Buyers vetting a seller often start with a business partner background check, and executives with a pre-hire executive check.

04East River, West River

How Distance, Time Zones and Winter Shape a South Dakota Quote

South Dakota is large and lightly populated, and distance is the biggest variable in field pricing. Sioux Falls to Rapid City is roughly 350 miles on I-90, and Sioux Falls to Pierre is about 227 miles. A case that needs an investigator in Harding County or along the Missouri River will include more travel time than one inside the Sioux Falls metro. We state that time in the written estimate rather than surprising you later, and our Pierre investigators often reduce central travel.

The state is also split between Central and Mountain time, with the line on I-90 at the western edge of Jones County, so appointments West River are scheduled in Mountain Time. Winter matters too. SDDOT has closed I-90 across long stretches during blizzards, including Rapid City to Chamberlain in December 2022 before extending the closure to Sioux Falls. We build weather contingencies into scheduling, and our Rapid City team covers the Black Hills without crossing the state.

05No burning retainer

Written Scope Instead of an Open-Ended Retainer

A common complaint about investigators anywhere is the retainer that disappears with little to show for it. Delator works differently. Before work begins, you receive a written scope listing the objectives, the tasks, the estimated hours or the case minimum, and the total price. Nothing starts until you approve it. If the facts change mid-case, the investigator stops and asks before spending another billable hour. Attorneys who use our South Dakota attorney services get the same document for client files.

That approach protects both sides. You know what you are paying for, and the investigator knows exactly what the assignment is. It also produces better evidence, because a defined scope keeps the work focused on what a court, insurer or opposing party will actually weigh. When a family is unsure what they need, a short investigative consulting conversation usually narrows the question before any money is spent. Questions about cost are always welcome, and the contact page is the fastest way to ask.

06Delator Field Services

What Process Serving Costs Alongside an Investigation

Many investigations end with papers that need to be delivered. Delator Field Services publishes a Routine starting rate for each of South Dakota's 66 counties, beginning at $125 in Minnehaha, Lincoln and Pennington counties and ranging up to $260 in the most remote counties. Faster handling is priced as a multiple of that Routine figure: 1.5 for Urgent, 2 for Rush and 3 for Same Day Rush. The South Dakota process serving rate map shows every county, and the final price is confirmed in writing first.

Under SDCL 15-6-4(c), a sheriff, a constable or any non-party who is an elector of any state may generally serve a summons, so private service is common. Our serves are documented with logged, time-stamped attempts and a signed affidavit of service. If an investigation locates an evasive defendant, the address and pattern information carries straight into the service attempt, which often saves a second trip. Serves in the largest city run through our Sioux Falls process servers.

07Budget tips

Practical Ways to Keep an Investigation Within Budget

The most effective cost control is preparation. Bring everything you already have: names, dates of birth, addresses, vehicle descriptions, photos, schedules, screenshots and documents. Each piece reduces the hours an investigator spends finding it again. Be specific about the decision the evidence needs to support, such as a custody hearing, an insurance claim or a settlement talk. A family preparing for a custody matter should read our custody investigation guide before calling.

Timing also matters. Surveillance scheduled on the days when activity is most likely costs less than open-ended watching. Records work done before field work prevents wasted trips across the state. And starting with a remote product, then moving to field work only if needed, keeps most cases lean. Finally, choose an investigator who can explain the work in plain terms. Our guide to vetting a South Dakota investigator covers what to ask before you pay anyone.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How much does a private investigator charge per hour in South Dakota?

Delator Group's standard investigative rate in South Dakota is $100 per hour, the same as in Tennessee. Because South Dakota does not license private investigators, there is no regulated rate and other providers charge very differently. Compare total estimated cost, not just the hourly figure, and ask what is included before you agree.

Do I have to pay a retainer?

We do not use open-ended retainers that drain without explanation. You receive a written scope and total price, and payment terms are set out in that document before work starts. If more work becomes necessary, we ask first. Read our South Dakota price list for the published minimums. That keeps budgets predictable.

How much does surveillance cost in South Dakota?

Surveillance is billed at $100 per hour, including time on site and report writing. A focused assignment of one or two well-chosen days costs far less than open-ended watching. Rural cases include travel time in the estimate. Our hotel and travel surveillance follows the same pricing when a subject leaves town.

What does a background check cost?

A basic remote background check is $102, and a deep-dive background check is $300. The deep dive goes further into court records, business affiliations, liens, judgments and online presence. Field verification, such as interviewing references or confirming an address in person, is billed hourly if you need it. Most clients start remotely and stop there.

Is it more expensive to hire an investigator in western South Dakota?

The hourly rate is the same statewide. What changes is travel time. A case near Rapid City or Spearfish is handled by investigators already working West River, while a case in a remote county may require more driving. We state travel time in the written quote, and appointments West River are scheduled in Mountain Time.

How much does it cost to find someone in South Dakota?

A basic database skip trace is $102 and often finds a current address. When records are stale or the person is avoiding contact, a field locate with interviews and site visits starts at $1,000. Our missing person skip tracing explains when each approach fits, and official missing-person reports always go to law enforcement first.

Why do scam investigations cost more?

Scam cases require tracing payments, identifying people who hide behind fake names and numbers, and often finding other victims to show a pattern. That work takes time, so scam investigations carry a $2,000 minimum. We never promise to recover money. We explain in writing what tracing can realistically show before you commit.

What does process serving cost in South Dakota?

Routine service starts at $125 in Minnehaha, Lincoln and Pennington counties and ranges up to $260 in the most remote counties. Faster tiers are multiples of Routine: 1.5 times for Urgent, 2 times for Rush and 3 times for Same Day Rush. The county rate map shows each starting rate, and every serve is confirmed in writing first.

Can an attorney get a quote for a client?

Yes. Attorneys receive the same written scope and price, suitable for client files and fee approvals. Appointed counsel in South Dakota typically seek investigator funding through the court and county process, so ask the court about requirements. Our appointed counsel defense support team is used to working within those budgets.

Are cheaper investigators just as good?

Sometimes, but price alone tells you little in a state without PI licensing. Ask about insurance, written scope, reporting standards and whether the investigator has testified. Low hourly rates can come with extra charges or vague reports a court will not credit. Our guide to what a South Dakota PI can legally do explains the limits a careful investigator respects.
