Quick answer

How do I hire a process server in Colorado Springs?

Email or upload the filed papers and the defendant's address, schedule and description. We confirm El Paso County jurisdiction, the service tier and the price in writing, then assign a server who records every attempt. Routine service in El Paso County has a published starting rate of $125, and the statewide rate map covers Teller and Pueblo counties.

01Local service landscape

Serving Papers Across Colorado's Most Populous County

El Paso County passed an estimated 757,000 residents in 2025, more than any other county in Colorado, and Colorado Springs alone holds close to 495,000. The city spreads east from the foothills toward Falcon and north toward Monument, so addresses range from dense apartments near downtown to five-acre lots in Black Forest with long gravel drives. We confirm whether an address sits inside the city, in Fountain or Manitou Springs, or in unincorporated county land, and Pueblo process serving picks up defendants who moved south.

Powers Boulevard and I-25 carry most cross-town traffic, and the westside neighborhoods climb steeply toward the mountains, where snow and ice arrive earlier than on the plains. Servers plan routes by hour and weather, and they note gated entries in the Broadmoor area and Briargate. When an address looks stale, our Colorado Springs investigators confirm a current residence before more attempts are spent.

02Attorneys and law firms

Service Support for Springs Practitioners and Distant Counsel

Most El Paso County litigation runs through the Judicial Building on South Tejon Street, a few blocks from the federal court location on North Wahsatch Avenue. Local firms send us collection suits, personal injury claims, landlord-tenant cases, HOA disputes and probate notices. Through Delator's services for Colorado attorneys, one coordinator handles the quote, the field attempts and the return, and counsel can see the attempt log at any point.

Firms in Denver, Texas and the Midwest also send papers for defendants who settled in the Springs after military service. We review each packet before scheduling, because a Teller County summons, an El Paso County probate notice and a federal summons each follow their own rules. When the named person must be located first, lost contact searches in Colorado and witness background research can run in parallel with the serve.

03Evasive and hard-to-serve

Rotating Schedules, Deployments and Defendants Who Avoid Contact

Colorado Springs is home to Fort Carson, Peterson and the U.S. Air Force Academy, and thousands of residents keep duty schedules, field exercises or deployments that empty a house for weeks. Civilian contractors and hospital staff work rotating shifts as well. Servers vary their hours, log every attempt with the result, and stop and report when a neighbor says the person is away for an extended period, so counsel can decide the next step.

Service on a military installation is controlled by base access rules, and a civilian server cannot simply drive onto Fort Carson to deliver papers. We coordinate with counsel before attempting service on anyone who lives or works on post, and we look for lawful off-base opportunities first. When a defendant deliberately hides, a Delator investigator can step in through evasive person searches, and debtor skip tracing supports collection counsel.

04Family law, evictions and subpoenas

Divorce, FED, Small Claims and Subpoena Service in Colorado Springs

El Paso County divorce and parenting-time cases are generally filed in district court, and under C.R.S. 14-10-107 the respondent usually must be personally served unless they join the petition or waive service. Service also starts the automatic temporary injunction that restricts moving marital property or removing the children from Colorado, so our servers record the exact delivery time. Counsel preparing financial issues can read about hidden assets in a Colorado divorce and the parenting-time investigation guide.

Landlords in the Springs file forcible entry and detainer cases in El Paso County Court. The summons is generally served personally, or posted after diligent attempts with the plaintiff mailing a copy, at least seven days before the appearance date. The sheriff's civil unit, not Delator, carries out any writ of restitution. Small claims notices must be served at least 15 days before trial, and screening prospective tenants helps landlords reduce future filings.

  • Petitions for dissolution and parenting time
  • FED summonses served or posted on schedule
  • Small claims papers at least 15 days before trial
  • Hearing, trial and deposition subpoenas

05Documentation

How Our El Paso County Returns Hold Up

Every Colorado Springs return states who served, that the server is at least 18 and not a party, which documents were delivered, and the date, time, place and manner of service, following the Judicial Branch JDF 98 form. Behind it sits a log of every visit, successful or not. Serves may be carried out by vetted servers Delator contracts with, all working to one written documentation standard, and the price is confirmed in writing before the first attempt.

When a defendant files a motion claiming defective service, counsel can show the court exactly what happened at the door. The record identifies whether the papers went to the person, to a family member at least 18 at the home, to a listed workplace contact, or were left after a refusal. If the dispute becomes a factual contest, Colorado investigative consulting and insurance investigations in Colorado can develop the record further.

06Colorado rules

Colorado Service Rules in Plain English

Colorado has no process server license. C.R.C.P. 4(d) generally permits service by anyone at least 18 who is not a party. Personal delivery is preferred, and C.R.C.P. 4(e)(1) also allows abode service on a member of the person's family who is 18 or older, or workplace service on a supervisor, secretary, administrative assistant, bookkeeper, human resources representative or managing agent. A refusal can still be valid service under C.R.C.P. 4(k). The Colorado process serving hub summarizes the full rule.

Deadlines are tight. C.R.C.P. 4(m) generally requires service within 63 days after the complaint is filed, and the defendant generally has 21 days after service to answer, or 35 days when served outside Colorado or by publication. Publication is limited to property and status cases by court order. These are plain-language summaries, not legal advice. The guide to serving legal papers in Colorado walks through each method, and what investigators may legally do sets out field limits.

07Colorado Springs angle

Working Alongside a Busy Sheriff's Civil Unit

The El Paso County Sheriff's Office Civil Unit, at 27 East Vermijo Avenue, handles roughly 900 papers a month with one sergeant, six deputies and three clerks. Its own page says restraining orders take first priority, followed by scheduled restitution and eviction work. That ordering makes sense for public safety, and it also means routine civil summonses compete for limited deputy time. A private server lets a filer add attempts at evenings and weekends. Petitioners documenting harassment before seeking an order can ask about stalking investigations in Colorado.

Monument Hill, at about 7,352 feet on the Douglas and El Paso county line, is where I-25 weather often turns first, and north-county addresses in Monument and Palmer Lake can see snow when the city is dry. Papers bound for Castle Rock or Parker go through process service in Douglas County, and our Castle Rock investigators work the same corridor.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a process server in Colorado Springs need a license?

No. Colorado has no process server license, and C.R.C.P. 4(d) generally allows any person 18 or older who is not a party to serve. Because no state agency screens servers, documentation quality is what protects your case. Our guide to vetting a provider in Colorado lists the questions worth asking before you hire anyone.

What does it cost to serve papers in Colorado Springs?

Routine service in El Paso County has a published starting rate of $125. Urgent begins at $188, Rush at $250 and Same Day Rush at $375. Teller County starts at $135 for Routine. Your final price depends on the address, the deadline and the number of people served, and it is confirmed in writing first.

Can you serve someone stationed at Fort Carson?

Possibly, but not by walking onto the post uninvited. Installation access rules control whether a civilian server can enter, so we coordinate with counsel before any attempt and look first for lawful off-post opportunities, such as an off-base residence. Our attempt log records what was tried. Counsel can advise on any military-specific rules that apply to the case.

Where is the El Paso County courthouse?

The El Paso County Judicial Building is at 270 S. Tejon Street in downtown Colorado Springs, with the clerk's office in Room S101 and probate in Room W149. District and county court cases for El Paso County are filed there. Teller County cases are filed in Teller, even though both counties form the 4th Judicial District.

Can papers be left with a spouse in Colorado Springs?

Often, yes. C.R.C.P. 4(e)(1) generally allows abode service by leaving papers at the person's usual place of abode with a member of the person's family who is 18 or older. A spouse or adult child living there usually qualifies; an unrelated roommate or a visitor generally does not. Our affidavit states the recipient's relationship to the defendant.

How fast must a Colorado Springs defendant be served?

Under C.R.C.P. 4(m), service generally must happen within 63 days after the complaint is filed, or the court may dismiss without prejudice or set a new deadline. FED, small claims and subpoena papers have their own lead times. Sending papers the day they are filed protects the deadline, and missing person guidance for Colorado helps if the defendant cannot be found.

Why use a private server instead of the sheriff?

The El Paso County Sheriff's Civil Unit is busy, handling roughly 900 papers a month and prioritizing restraining orders and restitution. Sheriff service is a sound choice for many filers. A private server adds flexibility on timing, evening and weekend attempts, and a detailed attempt log. Only the sheriff carries out writs of restitution, so Delator never offers removals.

How do you serve a business in Colorado Springs?

Usually through the registered agent listed with the Colorado Secretary of State, or through an officer, manager or general partner. If the agent cannot be served with reasonable diligence, C.R.S. 7-90-704 generally allows certified or registered mail to the principal address, but it does not make the Secretary of State an agent. Corporate investigations can help identify the right person.

Do you serve in Fountain, Monument and Manitou Springs?

Yes. Fountain, Monument, Manitou Springs, Security-Widefield, Black Forest and Falcon are all in El Paso County, so Routine service starts at the same $125 published rate. Palmer Lake is in El Paso County too. Woodland Park, by contrast, is in Teller County, which starts at $135, and we confirm the county of every address.

Is Delator Group based in Colorado Springs?

No. The firm is headquartered in Nashville, holds its license as a Tennessee private investigation firm, and has no office in Colorado Springs. It coordinates service across El Paso County through vetted servers held to one documentation standard, and it works to Tennessee's licensing standard. Read about Delator Group for its leadership.
