Quick answer
How do I get papers served in Florence County, South Carolina?
Send the filed summons and complaint, every address you have for the defendant and the deadline. We confirm the court and paper type, put the tier and price in writing, assign an adult server who is neither a party nor counsel, and return a signed affidavit. Routine Florence County service starts at $130, and the statewide price map for process serving lists the rest.
01Local service landscape
A Pee Dee Hub Surrounded by Small Farm Towns
Florence County had about 138,504 residents in 2025. The city of Florence holds the county Judicial Center, the federal courthouse, regional medical centers and most commercial addresses, while Quinby sits beside it to the east. Beyond that core, Timmonsville, Lake City, Olanta, Coward, Scranton, Johnsonville and Pamplico are small towns separated by long stretches of farmland and pine. Our South Carolina process serving hub brings each of those addresses under one written method, and we also handle witness subpoenas across the Pee Dee.
The county's road network centers on one interchange. Interstate 20 ends at I-95 at exit 160 in Florence, and nearby exits 157 at US 76 and 164 at US 52 feed the city's main commercial roads. Freight, hotel and distribution traffic follow those corridors, and many defendants commute along them. Papers addressed inside the city often go to our Florence city process servers, and the rate list for South Carolina counties shows starting figures for every neighbor.

02Attorneys and law firms
Helping Firms That Practice in the 12th Circuit and Federal Court
Florence County matters reach us from local practitioners, from Myrtle Beach and Columbia firms handling Pee Dee clients, and from out-of-state counsel with cases tied to the interstates. Typical files include trucking and vehicle claims from I-95 and I-20, medical and commercial disputes, collection suits, farm and equipment matters and family cases. Our service program built for South Carolina lawyers gives counsel one contact for the quote, the attempt record and the affidavit.
We read each file for problems before sending a server: a Florence mailing address that is really a rural route in Darlington County, a trucking company whose registered agent is in another state, or a defendant who drives long hauls and is home only on weekends. With the answer period under SCRCP 12(a) generally running 30 days from service, we send the signed affidavit promptly. Firms comparing states can use the eight-state rate comparison.
03Evasive and hard-to-serve
Truck Drivers, Night Shifts and Farm Roads
Florence County's evasive defendants are often simply hard to catch. Long-haul drivers may be home two days a week, hospital and plant staff work nights, and farm households can be in the field from first light. We schedule attempts at varied hours and days with counsel, and because South Carolina allows Sunday service except on someone going to, attending or returning from a religious service, weekend timing is planned with that limit in mind. See our approach to serving papers on people who avoid them.
When delivery keeps slipping, the attempt log becomes the evidence. Each visit is written up with the date, time, location and what the server saw. If counsel concludes the defendant cannot be found in the state after due diligence, the court or the Clerk of Court for Common Pleas may order publication under S.C. Code 15-9-710 on an affidavit. The publication walkthrough explains the process, and our South Carolina rush tiers help when a hearing is near.
04Family law, evictions, small claims, subpoenas
Family Filings, Landlord Disputes, Magistrate Claims and Subpoenas
Domestic cases go to Florence County Family Court in Suite 2700 of the Judicial Center. A divorce or custody summons and complaint are served under SCRCP 4 like any other civil action, and a cooperative spouse may sign an Acceptance of Service on the court's form. Contempt rules to show cause and protective orders are a separate category handled by the sheriff, law enforcement or a court-designated person, so we do not offer them as routine work. Read the South Carolina divorce service guide for the sequence.
Rental disputes in Florence and the surrounding towns follow the magistrate's ejectment process. The magistrate issues a rule to vacate or show cause, and the tenant has ten days after service to respond, but every county magistrate page we read routes that rule through the sheriff. We do not serve it unless the court confirms private service is accepted, and writs of ejectment belong to constables and deputies. We serve rent and damage summonses, magistrate claims and witness subpoenas. Our page on South Carolina landlord papers has details.
- Family court summonses for Suite 2700 cases
- Separate suits for unpaid rent or damage
- Magistrate claims up to $7,500 under SCRMC 6(c)
- Rule 45 subpoenas for state and magistrate hearings
05Documentation and challenges
Affidavits Prepared With a Challenge in Mind
A South Carolina sheriff proves service by certificate; everyone else uses an affidavit. SCRCP 4(g) asks that the proof state the date, time and place of service and the name and address of the person served, or a description when the name is not known. We draft each Florence County affidavit against that checklist and send it quickly, so your office can file it in Suite 1100 or with the issuing court well inside the answer window.
The affidavit is drawn from notes recorded at every attempt: arrival time, vehicles present, who came to the door, what they said and how the server confirmed identity. When papers are left at the defendant's dwelling, the record describes the resident who received them and why that person qualifies as being of suitable age and discretion. Questions about a contested serve can go through our office in Nashville, and Delator Group's background page explains the firm's structure.
06South Carolina service rules
South Carolina Service Rules as They Apply in Florence County
The first sentence of SCRCP 4(c) opens summons service to the sheriff, a deputy, or any adult 18 or older who is not a party and not an attorney in the action. The second sentence sends other process, such as orders, rules and writs, to the sheriff, another officer or a court-designated person, so we confirm the court's requirements before taking those. South Carolina has no statewide license for private process servers, and no credential is claimed here. Our plain-language guide to server eligibility quotes the rule.
Rule 4(d)(1) allows service on an individual in hand, at the dwelling through a resident of suitable age and discretion, or through an authorized agent. Restricted-delivery certified mail and qualifying commercial delivery are also available, but a default can rest on them only if the defendant signed. When the limitations period has already expired at filing, SCRCP 3(a) generally requires actual service within 120 days. This is general information, not legal advice; our South Carolina serving checklist goes further.

Where Eight Counties Send Their Federal Cases
Florence is the seat of the District of South Carolina's Florence Division. The Florence division covers Chesterfield, Darlington, Dillon, Florence, Horry, Marion, Marlboro and Williamsburg counties, and its cases are heard at the J. L. McMillan Federal Building on West Evans Street. Federal summonses follow Federal Rule of Civil Procedure 4, which also allows state-law methods, so we read the papers and the rule counsel intends to rely on before scheduling. Horry County defendants are reached through our Horry County service of process.
Because the division reaches the coast, a Florence federal case can need papers delivered on the Grand Strand, in Marion County farm towns or out of state. We keep each defendant under one quote and one attempt log, and the affidavit is captioned for the federal court. Coastal addresses are often assigned to our Myrtle Beach process servers, and defendants in other states are handled through our coordination for out-of-state court papers.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a private process server serve papers in Florence County?
For a summons, yes. SCRCP 4(c) permits service by the sheriff, a deputy, or any person 18 or older who is not a party to the case and not one of its attorneys. Orders, contempt rules and writs are generally left to the sheriff or a court-designated person. Our summary of South Carolina process serving explains why.
What is the cost of a process server in Florence County?
Routine work in Florence County is published at $130 to start. Pick Urgent and the figure rises by half; Rush doubles it and Same Day Rush triples it. Remote farm addresses, a defendant who travels for work or a hearing date close at hand can change the plan, and we raise those issues first. The final price is confirmed in writing, and the process serving rate map for SC lists neighbors.
Where are Florence County affidavits of service filed?
State-court affidavits go to the Florence County Clerk of Court at the Judicial Center, 181 N. Irby St., with civil matters in Suite 1100 and family court in Suite 2700; the listed phone is 843-665-3031. Federal cases belong to the McMillan Federal Building at 401 W. Evans St. Every affidavit we prepare is captioned for the court that issued the papers.
Can you serve federal court papers in Florence?
Yes. Federal summonses follow Federal Rule of Civil Procedure 4, which generally allows personal delivery, delivery at the dwelling to a suitable resident, delivery to an authorized agent, or a method allowed by state law. We confirm which method counsel intends to rely on, then document the serve for the Florence division of the District of South Carolina.
Do you serve rules to vacate in Florence County?
Not as a standard service. The magistrate courts we checked send the rule to vacate through the sheriff's office, and only a constable or deputy sheriff executes a writ of ejectment. We serve a landlord's other papers, such as summonses for unpaid rent or damages and hearing subpoenas. The step-by-step ejectment guide explains each stage.
What if the defendant drives a truck and is rarely home?
We ask counsel for the employer, route pattern and home days if known, then schedule attempts when the person is most likely present. Every visit is logged. If the defendant is outside South Carolina, personal service there is complete on the day it happens under S.C. Code 15-9-750. Read what to do when someone dodges service.
Can papers be left with a relative at the defendant's house?
Possibly. SCRCP 4(d)(1) allows the papers to be left at the defendant's dwelling house or usual place of abode with a person of suitable age and discretion who actually lives there. A visiting relative or a neighbor does not qualify. The affidavit identifies the recipient and explains how the server confirmed that person resides at the address.
How quickly can papers be served in Florence County?
On a Routine assignment, the first attempt generally happens within several days. Urgent, Rush and Same Day Rush cost 1.5, 2 and 3 times Routine, and Same Day availability depends on the address and when the papers arrive. Tell us the hearing date and we will confirm in writing what can realistically be done. Our urgent service options have details.
Is Delator Field Services located in Florence County?
No. Delator Field Services is a division of Delator Group, a Tennessee firm headquartered in Nashville, with no South Carolina office. In Florence County we coordinate service through vetted servers suited to the court and address, with a written price, a logged attempt history and a signed affidavit on every assignment.
What should I include with a Florence County request?
Send the filed summons and complaint, the defendant's full name, home and work addresses, any route or shift information, a description or photo, vehicle details and the deadline. For a subpoena, include the hearing date, courtroom and witness contact details. Self-represented filers can review serving magistrate court papers before sending anything.
