Quick answer
How do I hire a process server in Meade County?
Send the filed papers, the address and your deadline. We confirm the Meade County tier and price in writing, assign a server, log every attempt in Mountain Time and return a signed affidavit. Routine service has a published starting rate of $130 for addresses near the Rapid City metro, and the county rate map explains how remote addresses are quoted.
01Local service landscape
Serving Papers in South Dakota's Largest County by Area
Meade County covers about 3,483 square miles, more than any other county in South Dakota, and holds roughly 30,700 people. Most of them live in a band along the Black Hills: Sturgis, the county seat, with about 6,900 residents; Summerset and Piedmont between Sturgis and Rapid City; and the Meade County side of Box Elder. North and east of that band, the county opens into ranch country stretching to Faith on U.S. 212. Our process serving program for South Dakota quotes both kinds of address in writing.
That split drives timing and cost. A Summerset or Piedmont serve close to I-90 is a short trip from the Rapid City metro, while a ranch near Faith can be a long day of driving on two-lane highway and gravel. We plan northern-county attempts as separate field trips and set the timing in writing. When an address is uncertain, we verify it through skip tracing before anyone drives, and the Meade County entry on the rate map shows the published starting point.

02Attorneys and law firms
Meade County Service for Rapid City Firms and Statewide Counsel
Meade County is part of the Rapid City metropolitan area, and much of its litigation is handled by Rapid City firms: injury and premises cases, contractor and real estate disputes, collections, ranch and land matters, and family cases. Firms in Sioux Falls or out of state also need Meade County defendants served. Our attorney services in South Dakota give counsel one contact for the quote, the log and the affidavit.
We read every set of papers before the first attempt and raise practical issues: a Box Elder address that sits in Pennington County, a defendant who moved from Sturgis to a ranch outside Faith, or an LLC that operates only during the summer. Where a case needs more than service, investigative consulting for litigation and real estate risk research are available through the same intake.
03Evasive and hard-to-serve
Hard-to-Serve Defendants From Suburbs to Open Range
Avoidance looks different at each end of the county. In Summerset and Box Elder subdivisions, defendants rely on garages, shift work and long days in Rapid City. On ranches, distance does the work for them: a gate, a long lane and a schedule built around livestock. We vary attempt times, note vehicles and outbuildings, and keep the log detailed. When attempts keep missing, a focused surveillance check can confirm when the person is actually present.
Some defendants have simply moved on, whether to a new base assignment, a job out of state or a relative's place in another county. Delator investigators run an evasive person locate to find the current address before more trips are spent. For judgment creditors, debtor skip tracing in South Dakota traces where the person now lives and works.
04Family law, evictions, small claims, subpoenas
Family Cases, Evictions, Small Claims and Subpoenas in Meade County
Divorce, custody and protection-order papers in Meade County are generally served under the ordinary SDCL 15-6-4 rules, though counsel should confirm any special requirement in the case. Military households add questions about where a spouse actually resides and how to reach someone connected to a base, which we raise with counsel before attempting. Parents preparing for a hearing can read our South Dakota custody investigation guide.
Rental demand around Box Elder and Sturgis keeps eviction work steady. South Dakota repealed the 3-day notice to quit in 2024, and SDCL 21-16-6 generally requires at least two attempts at least a week apart within 30 days, with posting or delivery to a resident and a first-class mailing permitted on the second attempt. Small claims reach $12,000. Witness subpoenas generally require tendering one day's fee and mileage. Our guide to serving legal papers covers the steps.
- Divorce, custody and protection-order papers
- Eviction summonses near Box Elder and Sturgis
- Small claims papers up to $12,000
- Subpoenas for Fourth Circuit proceedings
05Documentation and challenges
Affidavits That Answer a Service Challenge
Under SDCL 15-6-4(g), proof of service generally must state the time, place and manner of service, and a private server proves it by affidavit. Ours are written from notes taken during each attempt, with times in Mountain Time and, for rural addresses, a clear description of the location. If a defendant later says no one came to the ranch, the log shows when and how the server arrived. The same habits apply to all Delator specialized investigations.
Because defective service generally means the court lacks personal jurisdiction over the defendant, we document each step. For abode service, our notes describe the resident over fourteen who accepted. If service is challenged, Delator leadership can review the field notes with your attorney, and the server can sign a further sworn statement if the court requires one. Every request starts at the contact page.
06South Dakota service rules
South Dakota's Service Rules for Meade County Cases
SDCL 15-6-4(c) generally allows a summons to be served by the sheriff or a constable of the county where the defendant is found, or by any non-party who is an elector of any state. South Dakota has no license for process servers. If the defendant cannot conveniently be found, 15-6-4(e) generally permits leaving the papers at the dwelling with a resident over fourteen, which counts as personal service. Businesses are generally served on an officer, partner, director or registered agent under 15-6-4(d)(1).
Two other routes exist. Service by mail with a notice and admission under 15-6-4(i) suits cooperative defendants; one who ignores it for 20 days without good cause may be ordered to cover the cost of personal service. If someone cannot be found in South Dakota after due diligence, SDCL 15-9-7 permits a court to order publication based on an affidavit. Answers are generally due 30 days after service. This summary is not legal advice. Our Sturgis investigators can help document diligence.
07A Meade County angle
Rally Week, Ellsworth and the B-21: Timing Service Around Big Events
Every August the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally transforms the county seat. SDDOT counted 537,459 vehicles entering Sturgis over the ten days of the 2025 rally, up 11.3 percent from the 2020 to 2024 average. During rally week, traffic, closures and crowds can turn a short trip into a long one, and a crowded campground is a poor place to serve papers. We schedule Sturgis-area attempts around the rally where deadlines allow and tell counsel in writing if the dates collide.
The county's other major neighbor is Ellsworth Air Force Base, near Rapid City and Box Elder. The Air Force selected it as the first main operating base for the B-21 Raider, with arrivals planned for 2027 and about 1,600 more Airmen expected. Growth in Box Elder and nearby subdivisions follows that mission. Serving someone who lives or works on a military installation raises access questions, so we confirm the approach with counsel first and coordinate with our Rapid City process servers.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a process server in Meade County need a license?
No. South Dakota does not license process servers. Under SDCL 15-6-4(c), a summons may generally be served by the sheriff or a constable, or by a non-party who is an elector of any state. Delator Field Services applies a written documentation standard to every serve, described on our South Dakota process serving page.
How much does it cost to serve papers in Meade County?
Routine service has a published starting rate of $130. Urgent is 1.5 times Routine, Rush is 2 times and Same Day Rush is 3 times. Remote ranch addresses in the northern county may be quoted separately. The final price is confirmed in writing before the first attempt; compare counties on the South Dakota rate map.
Can you serve papers during the Sturgis Rally?
Yes, when a deadline requires it, but rally traffic and crowds can slow attempts considerably. Where timing allows, we schedule Sturgis-area serves before or after rally week and tell counsel in writing if the dates collide. We generally avoid serving at campgrounds or event venues.
Can you serve someone stationed at Ellsworth Air Force Base?
Serving a person who lives or works on a military installation raises access and method questions. We discuss the approach with counsel before attempting, and we often serve at an off-base residence. Ellsworth is near Rapid City and Box Elder, and our Box Elder investigators know the area.
Can papers be left with someone else at the house?
When the defendant cannot conveniently be found, SDCL 15-6-4(e) generally allows leaving a copy at the dwelling with a resident over fourteen, which South Dakota treats as personal service. Whether that fits your case is your attorney's decision. Our affidavit describes the person who accepted and the location.
Do landlords still need a 3-day notice to quit?
No. South Dakota repealed the 3-day notice to quit in 2024. The eviction summons is generally attempted twice, at least a week apart within 30 days, and tenants generally have five days after service to answer. Landlords can reduce future disputes with tenant screening.
What if the defendant cannot be found?
We log each attempt and, if the address is stale, Delator investigators can run a missing defendant locate. If the person cannot be found in South Dakota after due diligence, counsel may ask the court to order publication under SDCL 15-9-7, and our attempt log supports the required affidavit.
Do you serve in Faith and the northern part of the county?
Yes. We cover Faith and ranch country along U.S. 212 as well as Sturgis, Summerset, Piedmont and Box Elder. Northern addresses involve long drives and can be slowed by winter weather, so we plan them as dedicated trips and put the timing and price in writing before travel.
Is Delator Field Services based in Meade County?
No. Delator Field Services is the process serving division of Delator Group, headquartered in Nashville, with no office in South Dakota. Serves here may be carried out by vetted servers Delator contracts with under its documentation standard, with logged attempts and a signed affidavit on every job. Read more about Delator Group.
