Quick answer

How do I hire a process server in Savannah?

Share the filed documents and where the defendant can be found. We confirm the county and the issuing court's rule, then send the tier and price in writing before anyone goes out. Routine Chatham County service has a published starting rate of $125, and the Chatham County process serving page covers every city in the county.

01Local service landscape

Serving Papers From the Squares to the Barrier Islands

Savannah counted 147,780 residents in 2020 and is the Chatham County seat. The county also holds Pooler, Garden City, Port Wentworth, Thunderbolt, Bloomingdale, Tybee Island and Vernonburg, each with its own street patterns and access quirks, but all Chatham civil cases come back to the courthouses downtown. Our Chatham County service page covers the smaller cities and the unincorporated island communities.

I-16 ends at Montgomery Street downtown, and I-95 crosses it in Pooler near the airport, so the west side moves quickly while the islands depend on a few causeways and bridges. A server heading to Tybee or Wilmington Island plans around that, along with heat, summer storms and visitor traffic in the Historic District. The Georgia county rate map shows how Chatham compares with Bryan and Effingham, and our Georgia publication service guide covers what happens if an island defendant cannot be found.

  • Historic District and Midtown addresses
  • I-16 and I-95 routing through Pooler
  • Island communities reached by causeway

02Attorneys and law firms

Process Service for Savannah Firms and Coastal Litigation

Savannah's legal community handles maritime and port-related disputes, logistics and warehouse claims, injury suits, real estate cases and a steady volume of collections. Many matters name a company with a Chatham County warehouse but an Atlanta registered agent, or a defendant who works in Savannah and lives across the river in South Carolina. Our process serving for Georgia law firms handles both kinds of problem with one quote.

We review papers before we schedule. A Chatham County superior court summons, a state court complaint and a Southern District summons each have their own return steps, and we raise gaps early, such as a defendant who moved to Richmond Hill or an entity that changed agents. When the defendant is a business, the steps on our Georgia business service page explain officers, managing agents and the Secretary of State fallback, and papers from outside Georgia follow their own matching process.

03Evasive and hard-to-serve

Short-Term Rentals, Service Industry Hours and Defendants Who Will Not Answer

Savannah's tourism economy shapes when people are home. Restaurant and hotel staff often work late into the night, port and warehouse crews rotate shifts, and some Historic District addresses turn out to be short-term rentals rather than a defendant's actual residence. We confirm occupancy where we can, vary attempt times across mornings, evenings and weekends, and log each one. Our page on Georgia defendants who resist service covers the approach, and Atlanta process service handles defendants who have moved inland.

When someone avoids the door on purpose, repeating the same visit rarely helps. We change the day and hour, record what was observed and who answered, and report after each attempt so counsel can decide what comes next. That dated record is what an attorney would rely on when asking the court about another method, as our guide for avoided service in Georgia explains.

04Family law, evictions and subpoenas

Divorce, Dispossessory, Magistrate Claims and Subpoenas in Savannah

Chatham County divorce and custody cases are filed in superior court on Oglethorpe Avenue and are generally served under O.C.G.A. 9-11-4. The state's self-help divorce forms also describe acknowledgment of service, which can avoid a visit entirely when both spouses cooperate. When they do not, we serve discreetly and confirm identity before handing anything over. The Georgia guide to serving divorce papers compares the routes.

The Chatham County Magistrate Court hears civil claims up to $15,000 and posts a standing order on private process servers, which we review in its current form before accepting magistrate papers. For dispossessories, the 2025 amendment to O.C.G.A. 44-7-51 added approved process servers without defining them, so we confirm the court's practice first and never carry out writs. Read more on our magistrate claim service page and the Georgia dispossessory service page.

  • Divorce and custody summonses
  • Statements of claim up to $15,000
  • Dispossessories only after court confirmation
  • Witness subpoenas with tender noted

How a Savannah Affidavit Answers a Service Challenge

In Georgia, a private server proves service with an affidavit, and O.C.G.A. 9-11-4(h) requires the date, place and manner of service and filing within five business days of the serve. If proof arrives late, the defendant's time to answer begins only when it is filed. Our Savannah affidavits are drafted with those requirements in view and backed by a note for every visit, including the unsuccessful ones. Our Georgia guide to serving papers explains where the affidavit fits.

If a defendant later swears they were never served, the record answers: the address, the hour, a description of the recipient and what was said. Serves outside Tennessee may be carried out by vetted servers Delator contracts with, each held to the same written documentation standard. Attorneys can ask for the notes at any time, and urgent filings can move to rush and same day service across Georgia.

06Georgia rules

Georgia's Limits on Who May Serve Papers in Chatham County

Unlike states that let any adult serve a summons, Georgia names specific people. Under O.C.G.A. 9-11-4(c), service may generally be made by a sheriff or deputy, a marshal, a specially appointed citizen, a non-party adult appointed by the court or as a permanent process server, or a certified process server under 9-11-4.1. Certified servers file a yearly notice of intent with each county's sheriff, who may decline to accept them. Read who is allowed to serve process in Georgia for details.

For every Savannah job, we assign a server who meets the requirements of the issuing court and county and confirm that in writing before accepting it. If a court will not accept a private server for a particular paper, we say so, and it goes through the sheriff. Defendants served with a superior or state court summons generally have 30 days to answer. These are summaries, not legal advice, so ask your attorney, or reach our team with questions about logistics.

07Savannah angle

Gated Island Communities and Georgia's Secured-Entry Rule

Much of the Savannah area's newer housing sits behind a gate, from island communities on Skidaway and Wilmington to planned neighborhoods near Pooler. Georgia law speaks to this directly. Under O.C.G.A. 9-11-4(f)(4), a person authorized to serve may enter a gated or secured community for a reasonable time during reasonable hours after identifying the person to be served to the guard or managing agent and showing government photo ID and evidence of appointment as a process server.

The rule has limits. The server must leave promptly after service, or once it is clear service cannot be made, and it does not cover a single residence, farm or commercial property with its own gate. We call ahead where it helps, give the gate staff the information the statute contemplates and record every exchange. Gated neighborhoods inland follow the same rule, as our Statesboro service page notes, and the Georgia process serving hub explains our statewide standard.

Process Servers Near Savannah

Savannah papers often leave the coast. Defendants up I-16 toward Georgia Southern are handled through our Statesboro process servers, and those farther inland at the I-75 junction go to process service in Macon. Papers moving up the Savannah River corridor use Augusta service, while cases in south Georgia near the Florida line use our Valdosta process servers. Papers for Atlanta-area defendants run through Fulton County service. Each serve carries one written quote, a dated attempt log and a signed affidavit.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Which cities does Savannah service cover?

Savannah service covers the city itself and, at the same Chatham County starting rate, Pooler, Garden City, Port Wentworth, Thunderbolt, Bloomingdale, Tybee Island and Vernonburg, plus the unincorporated islands. Cases from all of them are filed with the Chatham County courts downtown, so the affidavit is prepared for the same clerk.

How much does a process server in Savannah cost?

Routine Chatham County service has a published starting rate of $125. The faster tiers follow from that figure: $188 for Urgent, $250 for Rush and $375 for Same Day Rush. Effingham starts at $130 and Bryan at $125. Your final price is confirmed in writing before a server goes out.

Can a server get through the gate at an island community?

Georgia's secured-community rule, O.C.G.A. 9-11-4(f)(4), lets a person authorized to serve enter for a reasonable time after identifying the person to be served and showing photo ID and evidence of appointment. Privately gated single homes and farms fall outside it. We plan the approach and record each exchange with gate staff.

Do Savannah divorce papers have to go through the sheriff?

Not necessarily. The state's self-help divorce packet lists a signed acknowledgment, sheriff service and publication, while O.C.G.A. 9-11-4 separately permits other authorized servers to deliver a divorce summons. Which route fits is a decision for you and your attorney. Our family law service page explains how we deliver papers discreetly and record who accepted them.

Will you serve an eviction in Savannah?

Only after the Chatham County magistrate court confirms it accepts a private server for the dispossessory summons. The 2025 amendment to O.C.G.A. 44-7-51 added approved process servers without defining the term, and courts handle it differently. We never carry out writs or set-outs. The Georgia eviction service guide walks through each step.

How fast can Savannah papers be served?

Routine is the standard pace. Urgent, Rush and Same Day Rush move the first attempt earlier for 1.5, 2 and 3 times Routine. Island traffic, gates and work schedules still affect timing, so we put the planned window in writing and update you after each attempt rather than promise a specific hour.

Can papers be left with a family member in Savannah?

Georgia generally permits abode service under O.C.G.A. 9-11-4(e)(7): leaving the papers at the defendant's home with a person of suitable age and discretion who lives there. A short-term rental guest, a neighbor or a housekeeper does not qualify. The affidavit describes the recipient, and counsel decides whether the method fits.

Does a Savannah subpoena need a witness fee?

When the witness lives outside the county where testimony is given, O.C.G.A. 24-13-25 generally makes the subpoena valid only if served with a tender of one day's $25 fee plus 45 cents per mile. Tell us where the witness lives and testifies, and our Georgia subpoena delivery service records the tender on the return.

What if the defendant moved to South Carolina?

Service would then happen on the South Carolina side, following whatever rule the issuing court applies to defendants outside Georgia. Our South Carolina process serving page describes how we handle that side of the river, and we keep the same written quote and affidavit standard for both states, so the record reads the same wherever the serve happens.

Do you serve federal papers in Savannah?

Yes. The Southern District of Georgia's Savannah Division clerk's office is at 8 Southern Oaks Ct., with mail going to 124 Barnard St. Federal Rule 4 governs those summonses, and the signed proof we return is formatted for the federal docket. The About Delator Group page explains how our Nashville headquarters supports Georgia service.
