Quick answer

How do I hire a process server in Dunwoody?

Send the filed papers with the home or office address and suite number. Delator Field Services confirms whether the address is in DeKalb or Fulton County, puts the tier and price in writing, assigns a server who meets the court's requirements and logs each attempt. Routine DeKalb County service starts at $125, and Brookhaven process service covers the city to the south.

01Local service landscape

Serving Papers in Dunwoody and the Perimeter

Dunwoody counted 51,683 residents in the 2020 census and lies in the northern tip of DeKalb County. I-285 runs along its southern border, Sandy Springs borders it on the west, the Georgetown area meets Chamblee, and Winters Chapel sits at the Peachtree Corners line. Dunwoody cases go to DeKalb courts in Decatur, but a defendant a few blocks west may be in Fulton County. We confirm the county of every address, and the published DeKalb County service price applies inside city limits.

GA 400 runs through Sandy Springs just west of the city line and meets I-285 at exit 27 on the Top End, which is reported to carry roughly 250,000 vehicles a day. The Perimeter can slow to a crawl at rush hour, so attempt windows near the interchange are planned for lighter traffic. The Dunwoody MARTA station on the Red Line is the only one inside the city. Defendants across the western line are served through Sandy Springs process serving, and those farther up GA 400 through Roswell service.

02Attorneys and law firms

Process Service for Lawyers Suing Perimeter Companies

Perimeter Center is one of metro Atlanta's major office districts, and commercial litigators across Georgia and other states regularly need papers delivered here. Counsel send the filed summons and complaint, the defendant's registered agent listing, the office address and suite, and the calendar, and we respond with a written quote naming the county, tier and price. No attempt is made until it is accepted. Our intake for Georgia law firms lists what helps a server reach the right person in a staffed lobby.

Georgia's Civil Practice Act generally expects a server to act within five days of receiving the papers, while making clear a later service is not void for that reason. Proof is generally filed within five business days, and a late return can delay the start of the answer period. We send completed affidavits quickly. For defendants spread across several counties, Georgia process servers in every county follow the same written-first standard, and Johns Creek coverage handles North Fulton offices.

03Hard-to-serve recipients

Security Desks, Townhome Communities and Avoided Doors

Office towers around Perimeter Mall often have security desks that will not page an employee for a stranger. Our servers identify themselves politely and ask for the named person, an officer or the registered agent, and they never misrepresent who they are. If the desk refuses, the attempt is logged with the time, the response and the name of the person who gave it. Our page on serving hard-to-reach Georgia defendants explains how we follow up at a home address.

Residential defendants live in subdivisions and townhome communities, some behind gates. Georgia law generally allows a person authorized to serve to enter a gated or secured community for a reasonable time after identifying the person sought and showing photo identification and evidence of appointment. We spread attempts across evenings and weekends for defendants who commute. If diligent attempts fail, counsel can ask the court about alternatives, which our guide for when service is avoided outlines.

04Family law, evictions, small claims, subpoenas

Family, Dispossessory, Magistrate and Subpoena Papers in Dunwoody

A Dunwoody divorce is filed in DeKalb County Superior Court. When the other spouse will sign, an acknowledgment of service is often simplest; otherwise a qualified server can make personal or abode service under the general statute. Many spouses here work long office hours, so evening or weekend delivery at home is common, and we keep it private. Serving divorce papers in Georgia explains each option and the roughly 31-day wait that generally follows.

Apartment communities around Perimeter Center bring dispossessory filings to the DeKalb County Magistrate Court. Since July 1, 2025, Georgia law allows an approved process server to serve the summons, but the term is undefined, so we confirm the court's practice before accepting one and never carry out evictions. Claims up to $15,000 are handled through small claims service in Georgia. Deposition subpoenas for out-of-county witnesses generally need a $25 fee and mileage tender, which subpoena service for Georgia courts explains.

05Documentation

Affidavits for Corporate and Residential Serves

For a company defendant, the affidavit must show who accepted the papers and why that person could. Our returns state the date, place and manner of service under O.C.G.A. 9-11-4(h), the suite and floor, the recipient's name and stated title, and how the server confirmed their role. For residential serves, the affidavit describes any resident who accepted on the defendant's behalf. The Georgia service walkthrough guide explains how proof and waiver interact.

Every unsuccessful attempt is logged too, including what security staff said. If a defendant moves to dismiss for insufficient service, counsel can rely on that record. Georgia courts may allow a return to be amended when no material prejudice results. Papers from other states are served with an affidavit matched to the issuing court, which our out-of-state paper delivery page covers in more detail.

06Georgia service rules

Georgia Rules for Serving Dunwoody People and Businesses

Under O.C.G.A. 9-11-4(e)(1), a corporation is generally served through its president or another officer, a managing agent, meaning a person at a Georgia office with managerial or supervisory authority, or its registered agent. If none can be served, the Secretary of State may act as agent after the plaintiff certifies a mailing to the registered office. Individuals are generally served personally, at home with a resident of suitable age and discretion, or through an authorized agent. Registered agent service covers the business route.

The list of who may serve appears in O.C.G.A. 9-11-4(c): sheriffs and deputies, marshals, specially appointed citizens, court-appointed and permanent process servers, and certified process servers in counties whose sheriff accepts them. Delator Field Services does not hold or claim a Georgia certification or appointment. For each Dunwoody job, we assign a server who meets the requirements of the DeKalb or Fulton court involved, confirm it in writing and send papers to the sheriff or marshal when required. Who can serve process in Georgia explains the categories.

A Young City Split by an Office District

Dunwoody became a city on December 1, 2008. Perimeter Center, the edge city that grew around Perimeter Mall after 1971, is split between Dunwoody and Sandy Springs, with the mall and roughly 40 percent of the Perimeter Community Improvement District on the Dunwoody side. Two buildings across a street can sit in different counties. A process server in Dunwoody has to confirm the county before every office serve, and Fulton County process service handles the western half.

Away from the towers, Dunwoody Village is the historic heart of the community, with neighborhoods along Mount Vernon Road and toward Jett Ferry. Georgia State University's Dunwoody campus, formerly Georgia Perimeter College, adds student renters whose addresses change by term, and their landlords sometimes need dispossessory service planning confirmed with the court first. Defendants who have moved east into Gwinnett are reached through Peachtree Corners service, with the same written quote, attempt log and signed affidavit.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Who can serve legal papers in Dunwoody?

Georgia generally allows service by a sheriff or deputy, a marshal, a court-appointed or permanent process server, or a certified process server in counties whose sheriff accepts them, under O.C.G.A. 9-11-4(c). We assign a server who meets the requirements of the DeKalb or Fulton court involved and confirm it in writing. When a court requires the sheriff or marshal, we say so.

How much does a process server in Dunwoody cost?

Routine service in DeKalb County has a published starting rate of $125. Urgent starts at $188, Rush at $250 and Same Day Rush at $375. Fulton and Gwinnett counties also start at $125. The final price depends on the address, the papers and the deadline, and we confirm it in writing before the first attempt.

Is Perimeter Center in DeKalb or Fulton County?

Both. Perimeter Mall and roughly 40 percent of the Perimeter Community Improvement District are in Dunwoody, in DeKalb County, while the western part of Perimeter Center is in Sandy Springs, in Fulton County. The county decides the court and where the affidavit is filed, so we confirm it for every office address.

How do you serve a company with offices in Perimeter Center?

Georgia generally allows service on a corporation through an officer, a managing agent with authority at a Georgia office or its registered agent. A receptionist is not automatically any of those, so we ask for the right person and record their name and title. If the company cannot be served, the Secretary of State may be used after the plaintiff certifies a mailing.

Where are Dunwoody cases filed?

DeKalb County Superior Court cases are filed with the clerk at 556 N. McDonough Street in Decatur, and the 2021 directory listed the State Court at the same address. Magistrate cases go to the DeKalb County Magistrate Court, and federal cases to the Northern District of Georgia at 75 Ted Turner Drive S.W. The DeKalb County page covers the county.

What if a building's security desk will not let the server in?

The server asks politely for the named person, an officer or the registered agent and never misrepresents who they are. If the desk refuses, we log the time, the response and who gave it, then try other approaches such as a home address or a different hour. Counsel can use that record to show diligence. Evasive defendant service explains next steps.

Can you serve a dispossessory in Dunwoody?

Since July 1, 2025, Georgia's dispossessory statute allows the summons to be served by the sheriff, a constable or an approved process server, but the statute does not define how a server is approved. We confirm the DeKalb County Magistrate Court's practice before accepting one and never carry out evictions or writs. The Georgia eviction guide explains the timeline.

How long does a defendant have to answer after service?

In superior and state court, the answer is generally due 30 days after service, and magistrate civil claims also allow 30 days. Dispossessory answers are due seven days after actual service. A defendant who signs a waiver of service generally has 60 days from when the request was sent. Your attorney can confirm your deadline.

What if the defendant cannot be served?

We keep attempting at varied times and log each visit. If diligent attempts fail, counsel may ask the court about publication under O.C.G.A. 9-11-4(f)(1), which generally requires an affidavit showing the defendant cannot be found after due diligence or is concealing themselves. Service by publication in Georgia walks through the process.

Do you serve Dunwoody papers issued in other states?

Yes. When the issuing court allows service outside its state, we deliver the papers in Dunwoody and match the affidavit to that court's rule. Foreign subpoenas generally must be submitted to the clerk of superior court in the county where the witness lives, who issues a Georgia subpoena. Rush and Same Day Rush tiers are available for tight timelines.
