01Local service landscape

Covering Columbus and the Rest of Lowndes County

Lowndes County sits on Mississippi's eastern edge, bordered by Lamar and Pickens counties in Alabama. The 2025 estimate put its population near 57,300. Columbus is the county seat and holds most residents, and the towns of Caledonia, Artesia and Crawford, together with unincorporated Mayhew, cover the north and west. The Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway runs south through the middle of the county. Every request is quoted in writing through our Mississippi process serving program before a server is assigned.

The waterway divides the county, so addresses on opposite banks can be farther apart by road than they look on a map. Rural properties near the Alabama line sit on long county roads. We sequence attempts to avoid crisscrossing, and when an address may be out of date we suggest a pre-attempt address search. The Mississippi pricing map shows why Lowndes is priced above counties closer to a metro hub.

02Attorneys and law firms

Support for Columbus Practitioners and Distant Firms

Columbus lawyers often practice across a multi-county chancery and circuit system that, as of 2026, reaches Oktibbeha, Clay and Noxubee as well. Firms in Jackson, Tupelo, Birmingham or Tuscaloosa may need a Lowndes County defendant served without sending staff. Our Mississippi attorney services give one coordinator responsibility for the written quote, the attempt log and the affidavit, so status questions get a direct answer.

Federal cases from Lowndes County are assigned to the Northern District's Aberdeen Division, which sits in Aberdeen and also holds court at Ackerman and Corinth. We mark the division on the return. When the litigation needs more than delivery, such as witness backgrounds or asset research, our Lowndes County investigators and the Oktibbeha County investigations team work under separate written scopes, supported by litigation consulting.

03Evasive and hard-to-serve

Lowndes County Defendants Who Are Hard to Catch

Some Lowndes County defendants are hard to serve simply because they keep long or irregular hours, whether in industrial jobs, at the base or on the road. Others live on rural tracts with gated drives. A few cross into Alabama for work every day. Our servers rotate between early, late and weekend visits, record vehicles, lights and any comments from neighbors, and keep the log specific enough to show genuine diligence later.

If repeated attempts suggest avoidance or a move, we recommend a targeted step. An evasive party locate can point to a new residence or employer, and a brief surveillance engagement can establish when someone is reliably home. For a defendant who has relocated out of state, our out-of-state field coordination is quoted separately. Nothing proceeds without the client's written approval.

04Family law, evictions, small claims, subpoenas

Family, Rental and Subpoena Papers in Lowndes County

Divorce, custody, support and estate cases are heard in the Lowndes County Chancery Court. As of July 1, 2026, the special summons for custody, support and contempt is found in M.R.C.P. 4(i), and it directs the defendant to appear at a hearing the court schedules. Mississippi also reportedly presumes joint custody in cases filed after that date, with Albright factors still in play. Our Mississippi custody evidence guide explains what can be documented lawfully.

For residential rentals, Miss. Code Ann. § 89-8-13 generally requires three days' written notice for unpaid rent and 14 days for other breaches. Justice court eviction and small claims summonses go to the constable first, and removal is always carried out by a sheriff or constable. A witness subpoena under M.R.C.P. 45 is served personally, with one day's attendance fee and mileage tendered. The Mississippi service of process guide covers each paper.

05Documentation and challenges

Building a Record That Answers Any Challenge

M.R.C.P. 4(f) requires a server who is not a sheriff to prove service by affidavit, and our affidavits are written from notes taken at each visit. They identify the documents, the person served, the address, the date, the time and the method, and they describe how the server confirmed identity. For abode service they name the spouse or family member above sixteen who accepted, state the relationship given and record the first-class mailing that completes service. This is the standard Delator applies in the field.

When service is challenged, counsel needs answers fast: who took the papers, whether they live there, and when the mailing went out. We keep the log, observations, any photographs and the mailing record in one file so a response can be drafted the same day. The server can testify if a hearing is set. Raise any scope question through our contact page before the first attempt.

06Mississippi service rules

Mississippi's Rules for Serving a Summons

M.R.C.P. 4(c)(1) generally allows anyone at least 18 who is not a party to serve a summons, and Mississippi has no state process server license. Personal delivery is the starting point, and the sheriff will serve on a party's written request. Abode service under Rule 4(d)(1)(B) is a fallback once reasonable diligence fails, and it is complete ten days after the follow-up mailing. Our guide to vetting a provider where no license exists helps you judge a server.

For defendants outside Mississippi, which in Lowndes County often means Alabama, Rule 4(c)(5) generally permits certified mail with return receipt and restricted delivery. Service must usually be completed within 120 days of filing under Rule 4(h), and the defendant then has 30 days to answer. These are plain-language summaries as of 2026, not advice, and counsel should confirm the method. The Mississippi service and investigations hub covers the full state.

07A Lowndes County angle

Columbus Air Force Base, the Tenn-Tom and the State Line

Columbus Air Force Base lies in unincorporated Lowndes County and hosts the 14th Flying Training Wing, which trains pilots on the T-6A, T-1A and T-38C. Student pilots and instructors rotate in and out on training schedules, and many rent off base in Columbus. A private server cannot enter the installation at will, so service is usually planned at an off-base residence, and attorneys commonly consider the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act before seeking a default against active-duty personnel.

The Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway, with the John C. Stennis Lock and Dam near Columbus, and the nearby Alabama line shape the rest of the work. Our pricing hub for this county is Tuscaloosa, which reflects how close Lowndes sits to Alabama. We tell you in writing whether an Alabama address can be coordinated. Tupelo-bound files go to Lee County process serving, and other states use the multistate serve pricing map.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Do process servers need a license in Columbus?

Mississippi has no statewide license for process servers. M.R.C.P. 4(c)(1) generally allows anyone who is at least 18 and not a party to serve a summons, and the sheriff serves on written request. Courts focus on the method and the affidavit, which is why every Lowndes County job follows the standard on our Mississippi process serving page.

What does it cost to serve papers in Lowndes County?

Routine service in Lowndes County has a published starting rate of $160. The Urgent tier is 1.5 times Routine, Rush is double, and Same Day Rush is triple. Your total depends on the address, the deadline and the documents, and we confirm it in writing before anyone makes an attempt.

Can you serve someone at Columbus Air Force Base?

We do not enter the base without authorization, so we usually serve at an off-base residence or work out access with counsel. Attorneys should also weigh the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act before seeking a default against an active-duty defendant. Send any schedule or unit details you have, and we will tell you in writing what is realistic.

The defendant works in Alabama. What are the options?

If the defendant still lives in Lowndes County, we can attempt at home during hours they are back from work. If they now live in Alabama, M.R.C.P. 4(c)(5) generally permits certified mail with restricted delivery, and personal delivery may also be possible. Counsel chooses the method, and we confirm in writing whether we can coordinate it.

Who serves Lowndes County justice court papers?

Justice court process, including evictions and small claims, is served by the constable in the first instance. Under Miss. R. Just. Ct. 14(g), a plaintiff may request a private server in writing after the constable fails to return process. Let us know the case number and what the constable has done, and we will reply in writing.

Can you carry out a removal after an eviction judgment?

No. Under Miss. Code Ann. § 89-8-39 the warrant for removal goes to the sheriff or a constable, and the tenant generally has seven days after judgment to vacate unless the court orders otherwise. We confirm with the court whether a private server may deliver the eviction papers themselves. Landlords can use our tenant screening in Mississippi for the next lease.

Which federal court hears Lowndes County cases?

Lowndes County is in the Aberdeen Division of the Northern District of Mississippi, which sits in the Thomas G. Abernethy Federal Building in Aberdeen. Federal summonses are delivered under Federal Rule of Civil Procedure 4, and our affidavit records the method, date, time and place. Firms can read how we track filings on our attorney services page.

Is Delator based in Columbus?

No. Delator Group is a licensed Tennessee firm headquartered in Nashville and does not have a Mississippi office. Delator Field Services coordinates Lowndes County work, and a vetted contract server may make the delivery under Delator's attempt-log and affidavit standard. The company's leadership and organization are described on the About Delator page.

What if a Lowndes County defendant cannot be located?

When an address proves vacant we stop and call you rather than billing more trips. A missing person search often finds a new address or employer. If a diligent search still fails, counsel may ask the court whether publication under M.R.C.P. 4(c)(4) is available, which requires a sworn showing that the defendant could not be found.

What should a Lowndes County request include?

Send the filed papers, the defendant's full name, every address with apartment or lot numbers, any Alabama address, a photo or description, vehicles, the employer and shift, any military affiliation and the court deadline. For a subpoena, tell us the witness fee and mileage. Self-represented filers can begin with our plain-English Mississippi service guide.
