Quick answer

How much does a private investigator cost in Colorado?

At Delator Group, investigative time in Colorado is billed at $100 per hour. Remote work has set prices, such as $102 for a basic background check and $300 for a deep-dive report. Case types carry minimums, for example $1,000 for civil litigation support. Our Colorado service pricing page lists each figure, and travel is quoted separately in writing.

01The base rate

How Much Does a Private Investigator Cost in Colorado per Hour?

How much does a private investigator cost in Colorado? At Delator Group the answer starts at $100 per hour for investigative time, whether the assignment sits in a Lakewood cul-de-sac or a ranch road in Moffat County. That is the same rate we charge in Tennessee, where the firm is headquartered and licensed. The hourly figure covers field observation, interviews, records research that is not sold as a set task, and report writing. Our Colorado investigations overview explains how the firm assigns investigators here without a Colorado office.

Rates in the market vary widely, and Colorado gives you less help comparing them than many states do. The state no longer licenses private investigators, so there is no board that publishes complaint histories or requires insurance. Two quotes can look similar and describe very different work. Before you compare totals, read our checklist for vetting a Colorado investigator and ask each firm exactly what an hour buys.

The figure that matters most is the authorized ceiling, not the rate. A sound proposal states how many hours you are approving, what happens when they run out, and which tasks come first. Delator stops at the ceiling and reports before asking for more. That habit is what separates a disciplined investigation budget from an open-ended bill, and it applies equally to surveillance work across Colorado.

Remote Records Work Has Published Task Prices

Some work never requires a car. Delator prices remote tasks at the Tennessee figure plus 20 percent: a basic background check is $102, a deep-dive background check is $300, a basic database skip trace is $102, a due diligence report is $300, and an OSINT and personal information wipe is $900. These are task prices rather than hourly estimates, so you know the number before the research starts. A tenant applicant screening in Colorado usually begins at the basic level.

Why does a deep dive cost more? Colorado's own resources are narrower than many clients expect. The Colorado Bureau of Investigation's Internet Criminal History Check is a name-based search of Colorado records only, it leaves out sealed arrests and most juvenile matters, and each downloaded result carries its own fee. A deeper report adds other states, court dockets, civil filings, liens and open-source research, which is where the extra time goes. Hiring managers can compare tiers on our employee screening page.

Records work also has to respect the purpose behind it. Some reports, such as employment or tenant screening, are governed by federal consumer reporting rules, and we will tell you when a request falls into that category. Business clients weighing a deal can review the scope of a business partner background check before choosing the $300 due diligence tier.

  • Basic background check: $102
  • Deep-dive background check: $300
  • Basic skip trace: $102
  • Due diligence report: $300
  • OSINT and personal information wipe: $900

Case Minimums for Criminal, Civil and Fraud Work

Larger matters carry a written minimum so neither side is surprised. Misdemeanor defense investigations start at $750, a single felony at $1,000, and multiple charges or enhanced exposure at $1,500. Colorado's public defender system staffs 21 regional trial offices, and private counsel often bring us in when a case needs more witness work than the file contains. Our felony defense investigations in Colorado begin with a scope agreed with the lawyer.

Civil litigation support has a $1,000 minimum, as does an asset investigation. Audits start at $1,200, abuse investigations at $1,500, and scam investigations at $2,000. The abuse minimum reflects how much careful records and interview work those cases need, particularly in nursing home matters, where Colorado sends complaints to the Department of Public Health and Environment. Families can read how a retirement home abuse investigation is structured before calling.

A minimum is a floor, not a forecast. When a matter is likely to exceed it, we say so at the start and explain why. Scam cases are a good example: tracing money that moved through a cryptocurrency kiosk or several payment apps can take many hours. Colorado now limits kiosk transactions for new customers under a law effective January 1, 2026, but recovery still depends on documentation. See our crypto scam investigations page for how that work is scoped.

04Distance and weather

Travel Beyond the Front Range Is Quoted Line by Line

Most Coloradans live along the Front Range, from Fort Collins through Denver to Pueblo, and that is where most hourly work happens. Western Slope and southwest counties are several hours' drive from Denver, and Delator does not hide that distance inside a vague estimate. Travel time and mileage appear as their own lines in the written scope, and we tell you where the assigned investigator will start. Clients in the far west can begin with our Grand Junction investigator page.

Weather changes the arithmetic. The chain and traction laws on the I-70 mountain corridor are in force from September 1 through May 31, and the Eisenhower-Johnson Memorial Tunnel sits at 11,158 feet at its west portal. A closure can stretch a two-day assignment into three. We build that risk into scheduling, say plainly when weather affects an attempt, and never promise winter turnaround times we cannot control. Southwest matters often route through our Durango investigations page.

Sometimes the cheaper answer is to fly. Denver International handled a record 82.4 million passengers in 2025, and regional airports serve Grand Junction, Montrose, Durango, Eagle County and the Yampa Valley. Whether flying beats driving depends on dates, gear and the length of the assignment, so we compare both in writing. Matters that leave the state entirely are covered by our out-of-state surveillance service.

05Field hours

What Drives the Cost of Surveillance in Colorado

Surveillance is billed by the hour because no one can predict exactly when a subject will leave the house. The number of hours you need depends on the question. Confirming that a claimant works a second job may take a single well-chosen shift. Documenting a pattern of behavior over several weekends takes more. A good investigator will help you pick the days most likely to answer your question, which is where most of the savings come from. Insurers can review our workers' compensation surveillance approach.

Location matters too. A suburban street in Centennial offers parking and natural cover, while a foothills cabin in western Jefferson County or a trailhead in a ski county may require a longer approach and more patience. Resort towns change with the seasons, and traffic on I-70 on a winter Saturday can swallow an hour each way. We plan around those realities and record every hour in a time-stamped log you can audit. Relationship matters follow the same rules on our married infidelity investigations page.

The legal method affects cost as well. Delator works from public places and lawful vantage points, does not trespass, and does not place trackers on vehicles the client has no right to. Colorado's stalking statute lists placing a person under surveillance among the conduct it can reach when the other elements are present, so shortcuts are not an option. Lawful work sometimes takes longer, but it produces evidence your lawyer can use.

Public Records Fees and County Process Serving Rates

Some costs come from the government rather than from us. Under the Colorado Open Records Act, any person may request public records, copies cost up to 25 cents per standard page, the first hour of research is free, and a capped hourly fee can apply after that under a published policy. Agencies generally have three working days to respond, with a possible extension of up to seven more. We pass those charges through at cost and note them in the report. Attorneys can read how records feed litigation support for Colorado counsel.

Process serving is priced by county through Delator Field Services. The Routine published starting rate is $125 in metro counties such as Denver, El Paso, Jefferson, Arapahoe, Adams, Larimer, Weld and Mesa. Mountain and rural counties cost more because of distance: Summit starts at $170, Eagle at $195, and Sedgwick on the northeast plains at $255. Urgent service is 1.5 times Routine, Rush is twice Routine and Same Day Rush is three times. Look up any county on the Colorado process serve rate map.

For comparison, Colorado law caps what a sheriff may charge for serving civil process at actual expenses up to $35 per party, plus mileage. Sheriff offices are a sound option for many papers, though some serve only inside their own county and do not research addresses. A private server adds attempt flexibility and detailed documentation. Our Colorado process serving hub explains when each route makes sense.

  • Routine from $125 in metro counties
  • Summit $170, Eagle $195, Sedgwick $255
  • Urgent 1.5x, Rush 2x, Same Day 3x

07Comparing proposals

How to Compare Quotes When Colorado Has No PI License

Colorado required a state private investigator license from 2015 until the program ended after a 2020 veto, and it has not created a new one. Without that floor, the smallest hourly number can hide untrained staff, missing insurance or a habit of billing for hours no one authorized. Compare the scope, the hours ceiling, the travel lines and the report format before you compare the total. Our guide to an investigator's legal limits in Colorado tells you what a lawful plan should and should not include.

Ask every firm the same questions. Who will do the field work, and what is their background? Is mileage inside the estimate or added later? What happens if the first two shifts produce nothing? Will the report be written so a district court judge can rely on it? Delator answers those questions in writing, and our leadership's military and federal law enforcement backgrounds are described on the about Delator Group page.

If you already have a proposal from another firm, a second opinion is inexpensive compared with a wasted retainer. Delator's investigative consulting in Colorado reviews plans, invoices and reports without taking over the case. When the plan looks sound, we will tell you so, and when the hours do not match the goal, we will explain the gap.

  • Hours authorized and the stop point

The Same Pricing Applies From the Plains to the Western Slope

The hourly rate and task prices do not change by city; only travel and county service rates do. Front Range clients often start with our Denver private investigator page or investigators serving Colorado Springs. Northern Colorado matters run through Fort Collins casework, and Weld County clients can see our Greeley investigations page. Mountain resort and plains assignments are scoped the same way, with distance written into the estimate before work begins. Clients in Aurora, Boulder, Pueblo and the I-70 resort counties receive the same written breakdown, and Eastern Plains matters simply show more mileage on the travel line.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the hourly rate for a private investigator in Colorado?

Delator Group bills investigative time in Colorado at $100 per hour, the same rate as in Tennessee. Other firms set their own rates, and Colorado no longer licenses investigators, so there is no state rate guidance or registry. Compare written proposals that list the hours authorized, travel and the report format rather than comparing hourly figures alone.

Do Colorado investigators require a retainer?

Practices differ. Delator puts the scope and price in writing before work starts and does not burn through an open-ended retainer. Case types carry minimums, such as $1,000 for civil litigation support and $1,000 for an asset search for a judgment or divorce, and hourly work stops at the approved ceiling until you authorize more.

How much does a background check cost in Colorado?

Delator's basic remote background check is $102 and a deep-dive background check is $300. The Colorado Bureau of Investigation also offers a name-based Internet Criminal History Check covering Colorado records only, with a fee for each result. A deeper report adds other states, court dockets, liens and open-source research. Dating concerns are covered by our dating background check.

Why does mountain or Western Slope work cost more?

The hourly rate stays at $100, but travel time and mileage grow with distance, and I-70 chain and traction laws apply from September 1 through May 31. Closures near the Eisenhower-Johnson Tunnel or Vail Pass can add a day. Delator lists travel separately in the written scope so you can see exactly what the geography adds before you approve anything.

How much does it cost to serve papers in Colorado?

Delator Field Services publishes county rates. Routine service starts at $125 in metro counties such as Denver, El Paso and Jefferson, and rises with distance, for example $170 in Summit County and $255 in Sedgwick County. Urgent is 1.5 times Routine, Rush is twice, and Same Day Rush is three times. Our Colorado serving guide explains the rules.

What does a skip trace cost in Colorado?

A basic database skip trace is $102. When records do not produce a current address, a field-work skip trace starts at $1,000 and is billed against that minimum. Searches for a vulnerable or missing relative follow a different plan that begins with a police report; see our guide to finding a missing person in Colorado.

Are public records fees included in the price?

Agency charges are passed through at cost and shown on the invoice. Under the Colorado Open Records Act, copies run up to 25 cents per standard page, the first hour of research is free, and a capped hourly fee may apply after that under the agency's published policy. Court copy fees and certified records follow each court's own schedule.

Is a cheaper private investigator a risk in Colorado?

It can be. With no state license since the program ended in 2020, nothing prevents an untrained or uninsured person from advertising. A low rate paired with vague hours, no insurance certificate or an offer to use trackers or account logins is a warning sign. Our Colorado vetting checklist lists the documents to request.

How much does a criminal defense investigation cost?

Delator's misdemeanor defense investigations start at $750, a single felony at $1,000 and multiple charges or enhanced exposure at $1,500. Each is scoped with defense counsel in writing, including witness locates, interviews and report deadlines tied to the court calendar. Lawyers handling impaired-driving cases can review our DUI defense investigations.

Can I get a price without giving every detail?

Yes. A short description of the goal, the county and the timeframe is enough for a preliminary range. The final number is confirmed in writing once we understand the facts, and nothing is billed before you approve it. You can request a written Colorado quote by phone at (629) 310-8667 or by email.
