Quick answer

How do I hire a process server in Greenville County?

Send the filed summons and complaint, every home and work address you have and the date that matters. We confirm what the Greenville court requires, quote the tier and price in writing and log each attempt. Routine service carries a published starting rate of $125, and the South Carolina county rate map shows every tier.

01Local service landscape

South Carolina's Most Populous County, Spread Along Three Interstates

Greenville County held about 583,125 residents in 2025, more than any other county in the state, and the growth is not confined to the city. Most addresses we receive sit in Mauldin, Simpsonville, Taylors, Berea or the Greer side of the county line rather than downtown. That spread is why our Greenville County coordination team plans routes by corridor before the first knock, and why the quote names the exact address being worked.

I-85 bypasses the city to the south, I-385 carries traffic from Fountain Inn and Simpsonville through Mauldin into downtown, and I-185 runs as a toll road between the two. A server who ignores that geometry loses an evening window crossing it. We group Mauldin and Simpsonville attempts together, and our Mauldin service page covers the I-385 suburbs in more detail, while the statewide hub for South Carolina service explains coverage in the other 45 counties.

  • Downtown, the West End and the North Main area
  • I-385 corridor: Mauldin, Simpsonville, Fountain Inn
  • Northern suburbs: Taylors, Travelers Rest, Berea
  • Eastside and Greer toward the Spartanburg line

Working With Upstate Firms and Counsel Filing From Elsewhere

Lawyers who file in Greenville County want the summons and complaint delivered together, an affidavit that matches the caption and a record that survives a motion to quash. We take instructions from the responsible attorney or paralegal, report after each attempt and send the signed affidavit as a PDF the same day it is notarized. The intake details that save time on an Upstate file are set out on our page for South Carolina law firms.

Many defendants here are companies or employees of companies with Upstate operations, so out-of-state counsel often need a Greenville delivery that satisfies their own court's rules. Tell us the rule the issuing court uses for service outside its state and we match the South Carolina delivery and affidavit to it, as described on our out-of-state papers page. Federal summonses from the Campbell Courthouse follow Federal Rule 4, which also allows state-law methods.

Delator Group is a Tennessee firm headquartered in Nashville with no Greenville office. Serves here may be carried out by vetted servers Delator contracts with, working under one written documentation standard, and every server we assign is at least 18 and is not a party to, or an attorney in, the case. You can read how Delator Group is organized before you send a file.

03Evasive and hard-to-serve

Gated Subdivisions, Plant Shifts and Apartment Gates

Some newer Greenville County subdivisions sit behind keypad gates, and the county's manufacturing and distribution employers keep plenty of residents on rotating shifts. A defendant who never answers at six in the evening may be home at ten in the morning. We vary days and hours on purpose, and S.C. Code 15-9-17 permits Sunday service, though not on someone traveling to, attending or coming back from a religious service.

When a defendant plainly avoids the door, each attempt goes into a dated log with the time, address and what the server observed. If someone cannot be found in South Carolina after due diligence, the court or the clerk of common pleas can order service by publication on an affidavit under S.C. Code 15-9-710. Our notes on defendants who dodge service and the guide to publication in South Carolina describe the record counsel usually want.

  • Keypad-gated subdivisions in the growing suburbs
  • Rotating plant and warehouse shifts along I-85
  • Apartment communities with leasing-office access rules
  • Weekend and Sunday attempts when counsel approves

04Family, landlord, claim and witness papers

Halton Road Divorce Filings, Magistrate Claims and Landlord Cases

Divorce, custody and support cases are filed with the Greenville County Family Court on Halton Road, and the summons and complaint are served under SCRCP 4 like any civil action. Self-represented spouses may use certified mail with restricted delivery or an Acceptance of Service form (SCCA 400.03), and many prefer a private server for a clean affidavit. Family court rules to show cause are a different category of process, so we do not treat them as routine service; our divorce papers page explains the line.

Greenville County magistrates hear civil claims up to $7,500, and a magistrate summons may be served by any adult who is not a party or an attorney in the case (SCRMC 6(c)). The small claims service page covers those filings. Evictions are different: the magistrate's rule to vacate is usually served through the sheriff's office, and only a constable or deputy sheriff carries out a writ of ejectment. We serve the rule only where the magistrate court confirms that private service is accepted, and we never post or execute a writ. We do serve landlords' suits for rent or damages, as our landlord papers overview explains.

05Documentation and challenges

An Affidavit Built for a Greenville County Motion Hearing

SCRCP 4(g) asks the person who serves to make proof promptly, and a private server proves service by affidavit stating the date, time and place and the name and address of the person served, or a description when the name is unknown. Our affidavits follow that list item by item, and the attempt log behind them is kept so counsel can answer a challenge with facts. The multistate pricing map shows how South Carolina starting rates compare with the other states DFS covers. A sheriff's deputy, by contrast, proves service by certificate.

Challenges in Greenville County usually turn on method and identity: was the summons left at the defendant's actual dwelling, and was the person who took it of suitable age and discretion and living there. A contemporaneous log answers both. When a hearing is close, our rush and same-day options shorten the timeline, and the step-by-step South Carolina service guide shows how each method is proved.

06South Carolina service rules

Who May Serve a Summons Under SCRCP 4(c)

SCRCP 4(c) puts summons service in the hands of the sheriff, a deputy, or any adult of 18 or more who is neither a party nor counsel in the case. Court orders and rules fall under the rule's second sentence and usually belong to the sheriff or a court-designated person, so we check before accepting them. South Carolina has no statewide license for private process servers, and DFS claims no South Carolina license, list placement or appointment. Our explainer on who can serve process in South Carolina covers each path.

Methods include personal delivery, delivery at the dwelling to a resident of suitable age and discretion, delivery to an authorized agent and, for a summons, restricted-delivery certified mail under Rule 4(d)(8) or a qualifying commercial delivery service under Rule 4(d)(9). Mail service supports a default only if the defendant signed for it. If the limitations period has run by filing, actual service generally must occur within 120 days (SCRCP 3(a)), and defendants generally have 30 days to answer (SCRCP 12(a)). Your attorney can confirm how these apply.

07Local angle

Greer Sits in Two Counties, So the Address Decides

Greer straddles the Greenville and Spartanburg county line, and the BMW plant often associated with Greer is on the Spartanburg County side near I-85. A Greer address on a complaint therefore tells us little until we check which county the parcel is in. That matters for magistrate filings and for non-party deposition subpoenas, which under SCRCP 45(b)(2) must be issued from and served in the county where the witness lives, works or regularly does business in person. Our Greer service page handles the city itself.

The other quirk is downtown. The county courthouse at 305 East North Street and the federal Campbell Courthouse at 250 East North Street sit on the same street, while Family Court is out on Halton Road. We read the caption before the first attempt so the affidavit names the right court. When a co-defendant lives across the line, Spartanburg County deliveries or Pickens County service run under the same written quote.

  • County courthouse and clerk: 305 E. North St.
  • Family Court: 350 Halton Rd.
  • Federal Campbell Courthouse: 250 E. North St.
  • Greer: confirm Greenville or Spartanburg County first

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is allowed to deliver a summons in Greenville County?

Under SCRCP 4(c), the sheriff, a deputy or any person at least 18 who is not a party or an attorney in the case may serve a summons. Other process, such as court orders and rules to show cause, generally goes to the sheriff or a person the court designates. See our South Carolina service rules overview for the statewide picture.

What does a Greenville process server cost?

Greenville County carries a $125 published Routine starting rate. Urgent, Rush and Same Day Rush are figured from that base at one and a half, two and three times. The final figure depends on the address, the number of defendants and the deadline, and it is confirmed in writing before any attempt is made.

Can papers be left with someone at the defendant's house?

Yes, for a summons. SCRCP 4(d)(1) permits leaving copies at the defendant's dwelling house or usual place of abode with a person of suitable age and discretion then residing there. A visiting friend or a contractor does not qualify. The affidavit names or describes the person who took the papers and states their connection to the home.

Will you serve an eviction rule to vacate in Greenville County?

Usually not. The magistrate courts checked route the rule to vacate through the sheriff's office, and only a constable or deputy sheriff carries out a writ of ejectment. A private server handles it only if that magistrate court confirms it accepts private service. The South Carolina ejectment guide explains the steps.

How long does a defendant have to answer?

A South Carolina defendant generally has 30 days after service of the complaint to answer under SCRCP 12(a). The self-represented divorce summons states 35 days when service was by certified mail with restricted delivery. We send the signed affidavit promptly so counsel can track the answer date from a documented service date.

Do you serve papers on Sundays in Greenville?

We can when counsel approves. S.C. Code 15-9-17 allows a process server to serve a summons, complaint or other judicial documents on Sunday, but not on someone going to, attending or returning from a church or other religious service. We plan Sunday attempts around that limit and log them like every other visit.

How are Greenville County businesses served?

Usually through the registered agent or an officer or managing agent under SCRCP 4(d)(3). When a South Carolina corporation has no reachable agent, the court or clerk can order certified mail to the corporate secretary under S.C. Code 15-9-210(c). Our business service page for South Carolina lists the options your attorney may choose from.

Can you serve federal papers from the Greenville Division?

Yes. Summonses and subpoenas issued by the District of South Carolina in Greenville are served under the federal rules, which also permit state-law methods, and the affidavit is written for that court. Send the case number, the deadline in the summons and whether a waiver request has already gone to the defendant.

What if the witness lives in Spartanburg County?

Any non-party adult may serve a South Carolina subpoena under SCRCP 45(b)(1). A non-party deposition subpoena, though, must be issued from and served in the county where the witness lives, works or regularly does business in person. Witness fees of $25 a day plus mileage are paid on arrival, not at service. Our subpoena delivery page has details.

Is certified mail enough instead of a process server?

Rule 4(d)(8) allows certified mail with restricted delivery, but a default judgment needs a return receipt showing the defendant accepted it, and a default can be set aside if someone else signed. That limit is why many attorneys choose hand delivery. Our guide to evasive recipients explains what to do when mail goes unclaimed.
