Quick answer

How do I hire a process server in Scott County, Kentucky?

Send the issued papers, the defendant's addresses and any known work schedule, plus your deadline. We confirm with the clerk how the summons was issued and whether private delivery fits, quote the tier in writing, assign a server and return a signed record. Scott County's published Routine starting rate is $125, and the Kentucky county rate finder shows other counties.

01Local service landscape

A Fast-Growing County Between Lexington and the Farm Country

Scott County counted 57,155 residents in the 2020 census and an estimated 62,262 in 2025, and most of that growth landed in and around Georgetown. Only three cities are incorporated: Georgetown, Sadieville and Stamping Ground. Great Crossing, Oxford and much of the northern county remain unincorporated farmland and small crossroads. Our Kentucky process serving coverage applies the same written standard to a new subdivision and a gravel lane alike.

Interstate 75 runs north and south through the county and carries commuters to Lexington, which sits just across the Fayette line. New neighborhoods change quickly, so an address from an old filing may now belong to a different street layout or a newly built house. We review each address before the first attempt and confirm details with counsel when anything looks off. Papers addressed inside the city can go to our Georgetown process servers, and every county figure appears on our published Kentucky rate list.

02Attorneys and law firms

Scott Circuit Service for Lexington and Statewide Counsel

Much of the litigation reaching Scott County is filed by Lexington firms, but Louisville, Cincinnati and out-of-state counsel also need county residents and businesses served. Typical matters include employment and contract disputes, vehicle accident claims from the interstate, supplier and construction cases, collections and family law. Our Kentucky law firm service desk gives each firm one contact for the written quote, the attempt log and the completed return.

Before the first attempt we look for practical problems: a defendant whose home address is in Georgetown but whose case belongs in Fayette County, an employer with a registered agent in another city, or a witness who works a rotating schedule. A defendant served in Kentucky generally has 20 days to answer under CR 12.01. Firms serving in several states can see published figures on the multistate process serving price map, and foreign papers follow our out-of-state service coordination.

03Evasive and hard-to-serve

Shift Work, Commutes and Defendants Who Are Never Home

Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky in Georgetown reportedly employs about 10,000 people, and suppliers and logistics firms add more. Many residents work early, late or rotating shifts, so a house that looks empty at midday may simply belong to someone asleep or at the plant. We plan attempt windows around what counsel knows of the person's schedule and spread visits across mornings, evenings and weekends. Our page on defendants who are difficult to reach explains the approach, and our Kentucky rush and same day options help when time is short.

Some defendants do dodge service. Because a Kentucky summons cannot be left with a household member, the record has to show genuine attempts at the defendant. Serving at a workplace depends on the employer's security and policies, so we do not assume access to a plant floor or secured site. If counsel concludes the defendant is concealing themselves, CR 4.05 allows a warning order on an affidavit, as our Kentucky constructive service guide describes.

04Family law, evictions, small claims, subpoenas

Family Filings, Georgetown Rentals, Small Claims and Witnesses

Dissolution and custody cases are filed in the Scott County Family Court division at the Justice Center. A respondent can be served personally, by the clerk's certified mail, or can file a waiver of service and entry of appearance. When both parents work shifts at the same employer, we work with counsel on a time and place that avoids an awkward scene. Parents can read Kentucky's divorce service basics for the general sequence.

Rental demand around Georgetown keeps landlord cases steady. Georgetown appears on a dated 2015 list of cities that adopted Kentucky's Uniform Residential Landlord and Tenant Act, so notice periods may differ from the rest of the county; landlords should confirm current status. The forcible detainer notice goes to the sheriff or a constable under KRS 383.210, and we do not serve it or carry out a warrant of restitution. Small claims up to $2,500 usually go by the clerk's certified mail or the sheriff. Our landlord papers in Kentucky page has the detail.

  • Family Court dissolution and custody papers
  • Landlord pre-suit notices and separate rent suits
  • Small claims papers where the court permits private delivery
  • Witness subpoenas for Georgetown and Lexington hearings

05Documentation and challenges

A Detailed Return for When Service Is Challenged

If the Scott County clerk hands a summons to an authorized person under CR 4.01(1)(b), the endorsement that person signs is what proves service. CR 4.03 then expects that proof to reach the court promptly, inside the defendant's response period. We send the completed return quickly so your office can file it with the Scott County clerk while the 20-day answer period is still running.

Our records are written from notes taken at each attempt: arrival time, the vehicles in the drive, who answered, and whether the papers were handed over or offered on refusal under CR 4.04(2). If a defendant later says no one ever tried, the log answers with dates and specifics. For a subpoena, CR 45.03 adds a certified statement filed with the issuing court, as our Kentucky witness subpoena service page notes. Questions about a challenge can start through Delator's contact form, and the Delator Group story explains who signs the record.

06Kentucky service rules

Kentucky's Service Rules as They Apply in Scott County

Once the clerk issues a summons under CR 4.01, the plaintiff chooses among the clerk's certified mail, transfer to a person other than a mail carrier who is authorized to deliver it, or return to the filing party to arrange service. KRS 454.140 directs process to the sheriff, and KRS 454.145 allows a court to appoint someone for good cause to serve a particular paper. Our Kentucky server eligibility guide explains each route.

There is no Kentucky license or certification for private process servers, so DFS never presents a server as holding one. Before accepting a Scott County serve, we confirm how the clerk issued the summons and whether private delivery or a court appointment is needed, and papers that only an officer may serve go to the sheriff. A corporate defendant, such as a parts supplier, is generally reached through its officer, managing agent or registered agent. This is general information, not legal advice; our guide to serving legal papers in Kentucky adds detail.

07A Scott County angle

Serving Businesses and Workers Around the Georgetown Plant

The Georgetown plant has a reported capacity of about 550,000 vehicles a year and builds the Camry, RAV4 and Lexus ES, and its supply chain reaches well beyond the county line. That brings commercial cases to Scott County: supplier contract disputes, equipment and freight claims, and employment matters. Entities are generally served through a registered agent under KRS 14A.4-040, and if the agent cannot be served with reasonable diligence, the statute allows certified mail to the principal office. Our registered agent service in Kentucky page explains the steps.

Individual workers raise different questions. A large employer may restrict who enters its property, and a subpoena for a coworker should not disrupt a production line. We look first for a home address or a lawful public setting, and we coordinate with counsel before approaching any workplace. Witnesses from another county who are subpoenaed to Georgetown generally receive mileage under KRS 421.015. Our Lexington servers handle defendants who live across the Fayette line.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a private server deliver a summons in Scott County?

Kentucky's civil rules let the clerk transfer a summons to a person authorized to deliver it, or return it to the filing party to arrange service, and no statute licenses private process servers. Practice can vary by court, so we confirm how the Scott County clerk issued the summons before the first attempt. Our statewide Kentucky service page explains more.

How much does a process server in Scott County cost?

Scott County's published Routine starting rate is $125. Faster tiers scale from it: Urgent at 1.5x, Rush at 2x and Same Day Rush at 3x. Rural addresses toward the northern county line may need more planning, which we flag before work starts. The final price is always confirmed in writing; the Kentucky county-by-county rates show neighboring figures.

Where are Scott County returns filed?

State court returns go to the Circuit Court Clerk at the Scott County Justice Center, 119 North Hamilton Street in Georgetown, which keeps both Circuit and District Court records. Federal papers for county defendants usually belong to the Eastern District courthouse at 101 Barr Street in Lexington. We prepare each return for whichever court issued the papers.

Can you serve someone at the Toyota plant?

Workplace service depends on the employer's security rules and policies, so we never assume access to a plant or secured site. We usually look first for a home address or a lawful public setting, and we coordinate with counsel before approaching any workplace. Timing attempts around shift changes at home is often the most reliable approach.

Can papers be left with a family member?

Not for a Kentucky summons. Under CR 4.04(2), the papers generally must go into the defendant's own hands, be offered if refused, or reach an agent the person appointed or the law designates. There is no household substitute option for a private server. If personal delivery keeps failing, your attorney can review the attempt log and consider the clerk's certified mail or a warning order.

Do you serve eviction papers in Scott County?

Not the forcible detainer notice. KRS 383.210 directs that warrant to the sheriff or any constable, and the AOC-215 notice is addressed to them. Nor do we enforce a warrant of restitution after judgment. A Georgetown landlord's written notice before suit, or a separate lawsuit for rent, is work we can take on where the lease and rules allow. Read how Kentucky eviction notices are served.

What if a Georgetown defendant cannot be found?

Each Georgetown-area visit goes into the log with its date, time and the server's observations. A defendant who fled Scott County to dodge service, is hiding, or has no known residence can face a CR 4.05 warning order once an affidavit is filed. The clerk appoints a warning order attorney, who reports to the court within 50 days. See when a Kentucky defendant avoids service for more.

How quickly can papers be served in Georgetown?

Under the Routine tier, the first knock usually comes within several days of approval. Urgent, Rush and Same Day Rush move faster at 1.5, 2 and 3 times the Routine rate, and Same Day depends on the address and the defendant's schedule. Tell us the hearing or filing date and we will confirm in writing what is realistic before you commit.

Is Delator Field Services based in Scott County?

No. DFS operates as part of Delator Group from Nashville, Tennessee, without any office in Georgetown or elsewhere in Kentucky. Scott County assignments go to servers suited to the issuing court, and each carries an agreed written price, an attempt log and a signed return. If a Scott County matter later moves to Fayette or Franklin County, the same standard and the same point of contact stay with the file.

What should I send with a Scott County request?

Send the issued summons and complaint, the defendant's full name, every known address, the employer and shift if known, a description or photo, vehicle details and the deadline. For a subpoena, add the hearing date and any witness mileage your office will provide. Self-represented filers can begin with Kentucky small claims delivery so nothing is missing at intake.
