Quick answer

What does Delator charge for investigative work in South Dakota?

At Delator Group, field investigation in South Dakota costs $100 per hour. Records-only items carry set prices, a basic background check being $102, and case-based files start at published minimums, beginning at $750 for a misdemeanor defense. Your total is quoted in writing first, and our South Dakota PI cost guide walks through how the hours add up.

01How prices are set

The Logic Behind Our South Dakota Prices

Delator Group uses three pricing rules in South Dakota, and every matter falls under one of them or a combination. Field work is billed by the hour. Remote work, done from records and databases without travel, carries a set price per item. Case-based matters, such as criminal defense or an abuse investigation, carry a published minimum that reflects the work those files almost always need. Knowing which rule applies tells you most of what a matter will cost, and the statewide South Dakota investigations page explains the services each rule covers.

The rules exist so a client can compare before committing. Many investigators ask for an open retainer and report back when it runs out. We do the opposite: Delator leadership reviews the facts, picks the rule, estimates the hours and travel, and sends the total in writing. If the work later needs more time, we ask before spending it. Readers who want the numbers explained step by step can read how investigator fees add up in South Dakota.

02Field work

Field Work Billed at $100 Per Hour

The hourly rate applies to work an investigator does in person: surveillance shifts, witness interviews, neighborhood canvasses, scene photography and trips to a clerk of courts office for files that are not online. It is the same $100 per hour in Sioux Falls, Mitchell, Belle Fourche or Gregory County. What changes is the number of hours, which depends on the subject's routine, the distance to the site and how many investigators the job requires. Our surveillance service in South Dakota is the most common hourly engagement.

Hourly work is estimated before it is approved. For a claim file, we look at what the adjuster already knows and suggest targeted shifts rather than open-ended watching, which is how injury claim surveillance stays proportionate to the claim. For counsel, we estimate interview time per witness and the travel between them, and a witness background check done remotely first can shorten the field work that follows.

03Remote services

Records-Only Services at the Tennessee Price Plus 20 Percent

Remote services are done from records and databases rather than in the field, so they have set prices. In South Dakota they cost the Tennessee price plus 20 percent: $102 for a basic background check, $300 for a deep-dive background check, $102 for a basic skip trace, $900 for an OSINT personal information wipe and $300 for a due diligence report. The surcharge reflects the additional state-specific records work involved. A hiring manager screening an applicant usually needs only our $102 employee background check.

The deep-dive check is built for decisions with more at stake. An executive candidate background check looks further back and wider, covering prior companies, lawsuits and public statements. The $300 due diligence report applies the same depth to a company, which suits a buyer reviewing an acquisition target's due diligence record. Clients who want their own exposure reduced instead can order a personal information wipe for $900.

04Case-based matters

Case Minimums for Defense, Litigation, Audits and Scams

Some matters reliably need a certain amount of work, so they carry a minimum. Criminal defense starts at $750 for a misdemeanor, $1,000 for a single felony and $1,500 for multiple charges or enhanced exposure. Civil litigation support carries a $1,000 minimum, as do field-work skip traces and asset investigations. The minimums match Tennessee. A misdemeanor defense investigation heard in magistrate court sits at the low end, and an asset investigation for South Dakota litigation at the $1,000 level.

Further up the schedule, site audits begin at $1,200, abuse cases at $1,500 and scam tracing at $2,000. A minimum is a starting point, not a ceiling or a bundled package: it covers the core work, and anything beyond it is estimated at the hourly rate and approved in writing. A compliance audit for a South Dakota site usually stays near its minimum, while scam loss investigations that trace money across accounts often run longer, and we say so before you sign.

05Travel

How South Dakota Distances and Weather Affect the Total

Distance is the biggest variable in South Dakota pricing. Sioux Falls and Rapid City are about 349 miles apart on I-90, and Sioux Falls to Pierre is about 227 miles. A matter in the Black Hills is planned and priced as a West River field operation, separate from East River work, and appointments there are confirmed in Mountain Time. An assignment handled through our Rapid City investigator page needs different travel assumptions than one around Sioux Falls, and the quote shows them line by line.

Weather can move dates. On December 22, 2022, the state closed I-90 from Rapid City to Chamberlain in blizzard conditions and then extended the closure to Sioux Falls, and secondary roads were marked no travel advised. Our quotes say how a closure is handled: shifts move, and you are not billed for an investigator waiting out a storm. Southern Black Hills files run through our Hot Springs coverage, and subjects who cross a state line are priced under multistate surveillance.

06Process serving

Process Serving Is Priced by County

Process serving is priced separately from investigation, by county. Routine starting rates in South Dakota run from $125 in Minnehaha, Pennington and Lincoln counties to $260 in the most remote counties, set from each county's population and distance from the nearest metro. Each faster level is a multiple of Routine: 1.5 for Urgent, 2 for Rush, 3 for Same Day Rush. Every county is listed on the South Dakota county rate finder, and Delator Field Services explains its documentation standard on the state process serving page.

Rates are published starting points, confirmed in writing before the first attempt. Remote counties cost more because a single serve can mean hours of driving, as in Hughes County, where Routine starts at $250. Counsel sometimes tries service by mail with admission first under SDCL 15-6-4(i); if the defendant does not sign and return it within 20 days without good cause, the court generally orders the defendant to pay the costs of personal service. Firms comparing states can use the multistate starting-rate map, and capital-area matters go through our Pierre process server page.

Written Quotes, Approvals and No Retainer Surprises

Every engagement starts with a written quote that names the pricing rule, the expected hours, the travel, any case minimum and the total. You approve it before an investigator is assigned. If the facts change midway, for example when a subject leaves for Nebraska or a witness list doubles, we stop, explain the new estimate and wait for your approval. To get a quote, send the county and a short description by phone or email, and leadership will reply with questions.

Attorneys often ask whether investigation costs can be planned around a litigation budget. They can. We break a case into phases, price each one and let counsel decide how far to go, and our support services for South Dakota attorneys describe how that works for civil and criminal files. When a client is unsure whether a matter is worth investigating at all, a short investigative consulting engagement can answer that before larger sums are committed.

How it works

How a South Dakota Quote Is Built

  1. 01

    Describe the matter

Start with the county, the people and the question behind the request. We ask the questions that drive cost, such as distance, schedule and records already in hand.

  2. 02

    Choose the pricing rule

Delator leadership decides whether the work is hourly field work, a remote service with a set price, or a case-based matter with a published minimum.

  3. 03

    Estimate hours and travel

We estimate shifts, interviews and travel, note whether the work is East River, West River or both, and state how weather delays will be handled.

  4. 04

    Approve in writing

You receive the full quote in writing and approve it before anyone is assigned. Any later change in scope is estimated and approved the same way.

Statewide coverage

Pricing Applies the Same Way in Every South Dakota City

These pricing rules hold in all 66 counties; distance changes the hours, never the rate. A matter handled by our Mitchell investigators on I-90 usually needs less travel than one routed to the Belle Fourche investigation page near the Wyoming line. Northeastern files start with a private investigator in Watertown, and southeastern matters with our Vermillion coverage. Each quote spells out its travel assumptions, so you can see why two matters in different corners of the state are priced differently.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Why is the hourly rate the same in South Dakota as in Tennessee?

Delator Group uses one standard investigative rate, $100 per hour, in Tennessee and in each new state where it offers investigations, including South Dakota. Keeping the rate constant makes quotes easy to compare across states. Private investigator pricing in South Dakota therefore varies only in the number of hours, which depends mostly on distance and the subject's schedule, and those hours are estimated in writing first.

Why do remote services cost more than in Tennessee?

Remote services in South Dakota are priced at the Tennessee price plus 20 percent, which reflects the extra state-specific records work involved. That puts a basic background check and a basic skip trace at $102, a deep-dive check and a due diligence report at $300, and an OSINT personal information wipe at $900. Field verification, if needed, is quoted separately at $100 per hour.

Do you charge for travel time across South Dakota?

Travel is part of the hourly work and is estimated in the written quote before you approve it, so it never appears as a surprise. Because the state is large, the quote shows the travel assumptions separately, such as a West River trip for a Rapid City matter. If a closer investigator can be assigned, we do that to keep the total down.

What happens if surveillance runs longer than quoted?

The investigator stops at the approved hours unless you authorize more. If the subject's behavior suggests another shift would answer the question, we call, explain why and give the added cost. You decide. Our shift-by-shift planning for claimant surveillance for claim files works the same way, with each extension approved before it starts.

Is a case minimum the most I will pay?

No. A minimum is the starting price for the core work a matter almost always needs, such as $1,000 for a single felony defense investigation. If counsel needs more witnesses interviewed or more records retrieved, the added work is estimated at $100 per hour and approved in writing first. Many matters stay close to the minimum; we tell you early if yours likely will not.

What does process service cost in a South Dakota county?

Routine starting rates are published by county, beginning at $125 in the two metro areas and reaching $260 where a serve means the longest drive. If you need it faster, Urgent costs one and a half times Routine, Rush twice and Same Day Rush three times. Lincoln County starts at $125 and Meade County at $130. Our Lincoln County process server page covers the fast-growing area south of Sioux Falls.

Do you require a large retainer?

We do not ask for an open retainer that is spent down without explanation. You receive a written quote with the total, and the work stays within it unless you approve a change. Payment terms are set out in the quote. That approach is part of how Delator Group runs every file, and our firm background explains the structure behind it.

Can an attorney's client be billed directly?

Billing arrangements are set out in the written quote. Some firms prefer to be billed and pass the cost through, while others ask us to bill the client directly with the firm copied. Either way, the scope and price are approved before work starts, and reports go to counsel so privilege questions can be handled properly. Ask about the arrangement during intake.

How much does a hidden asset search cost in a divorce?

An asset investigation carries a $1,000 minimum, which covers searches of land, vehicles, business filings and recent transfers in South Dakota and neighboring states. Trusts can complicate tracing, and investigators work only from public records and lawful discovery. Our guide to divorce asset searches in South Dakota explains what the minimum typically covers.

How do I get a quote for my matter?

Call (629) 310-8667, email contact@delatorgroup.com or send a confidential quote request with the county, the people involved and what you need to know. Delator leadership reviews it, asks the questions that affect cost and sends a written quote. No work starts and nothing is billed until you approve that quote.
