Quick answer
Can a Colorado investigator follow my spouse to another state?
Yes, when the trip is planned properly. Each state sets its own rules for investigators, recording and trespass, so coverage at the destination must follow that state's law, not Colorado's. Delator assigns investigators who can work lawfully there and joins their notes with the Colorado portion. Our multi-state surveillance team quotes travel in writing before anyone books a ticket.
01Why travel
Why So Many Colorado Affairs Surface on Business Trips and Weekends Away
Travel creates the privacy an affair needs. A conference in another city, a sales trip, a reunion or a guys' weekend gives a spouse a plausible reason to be unreachable, and the other person can meet them without anyone at home noticing. Clients often tell us that the late nights in Colorado were ambiguous but the trips were not. Watching a spouse for a few targeted days at a destination can answer a question that months of local coverage would not. Our married infidelity investigations in Colorado frequently end up here.
The same is true for unmarried couples. A partner who travels for work, or who visits an ex in another state, can create exactly the uncertainty that makes clients call. Our approach does not change with the relationship: we confirm the itinerary as far as you know it, decide which part of the trip matters, and cover only those hours. Our unmarried partner infidelity team handles those cases, and the Colorado specialized services list shows the related options.
02Air travel
Denver International and Colorado's Regional Airports
Most out-of-state trips start at Denver International Airport, which reported a record 82,427,962 passengers in 2025. That volume means we rarely try to watch a spouse inside the terminal. Instead, we confirm the departure, note who they travel with and pass the details to the investigator waiting at the destination. Our Aurora investigators work the east-metro routes toward the airport, and they understand the parking, shuttle and pickup patterns well.
Colorado also has busy regional airports that clients forget about. Colorado Springs, Grand Junction, Montrose, Durango, Eagle County, Aspen, Hayden near Steamboat Springs and Gunnison all carry commercial flights, and a spouse who wants to avoid Denver may use one of them. Departures from the Western Slope or the southwest need their own planning because the drive from the Front Range is several hours. Our Durango private investigators and Grand Junction investigators handle those departures locally.
03Road trips
Driving Out of Colorado on I-25, I-70 and the Two-Lane Highways
Colorado borders Wyoming, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, New Mexico and Utah, and touches Arizona at the Four Corners. I-25 runs almost 300 miles from Raton Pass on the New Mexico line to the Wyoming line near Wellington, which puts Cheyenne within easy reach of Fort Collins. I-70 runs about 450 miles from the Utah line near Mack to Kansas. A mobile follow across a state line is possible, but it works best when we know the destination and can place an investigator there ahead of time. Our Wyoming investigations page explains how we work north of the line.
Weather complicates driving trips more than flights. From September through May, the I-70 mountain corridor runs under Colorado's chain and traction rules, and closures near the Eisenhower-Johnson Memorial Tunnel can stop a follow for hours. Southbound routes over passes such as US-160 and US-550 carry their own commercial chain requirements, which our Pueblo investigators watch on trips toward New Mexico. We tell you when conditions affect coverage instead of guessing. Our Loveland surveillance team covers the northern I-25 departures toward Wyoming.
04Legal limits
Every State Has Its Own Rules, and the Destination's Rules Apply
Colorado no longer issues a state private investigator license, but many states do, and some cities regulate investigators on their own. Wyoming, for example, has no statewide license, yet Cheyenne requires a local business license for private detectives. Before any out-of-state shift, we confirm what the destination requires and assign an investigator who can work there lawfully. Our guide to vetting a private investigator in Colorado suggests asking any firm exactly how it handles this.
Recording and privacy laws also vary. Colorado requires the consent of one participant to record a conversation, while other states set different rules, so the destination's law decides what an investigator may record. Trespass, stalking and harassment laws differ too. Our investigators work from public places, do not record private conversations and do not place trackers on vehicles, which keeps the work lawful almost anywhere. Our Colorado guide to recording law covers the Colorado side in detail.
05The reverse case
When the Spouse Is Coming to Colorado From Somewhere Else
Some of our clients live outside Colorado and suspect their spouse is meeting someone here. Ski weekends in Summit or Eagle County, a conference in downtown Denver, or a trip to Colorado Springs for a military reunion near Fort Carson are common patterns. We take those cases the same way: confirm the dates and lodging if you know them, cover the hours that matter and report the results to you or your attorney in your home state. Our hotel and resort surveillance is often the core of that work.
Mountain resort towns bring their own challenges. Lodging is concentrated, parking is limited and an unfamiliar car idling near a condo complex stands out. We use fewer, better-timed shifts and public vantage points such as streets, sidewalks and businesses open to the public. Aspen, Vail and Steamboat Springs all have commercial airports, so a visitor may never touch Denver at all. Our Colorado surveillance investigations team plans those assignments around flights, weather and resort schedules.
06In court
Using Out-of-State Evidence in a Colorado Divorce or Parenting Case
Colorado dissolution cases are generally heard in district court, and to file, one spouse must have lived in Colorado for 91 days. Because Colorado is a no-fault state that divides property and awards maintenance without regard to marital misconduct, the travel itself is rarely the point. What can matter is money: plane tickets, hotels and gifts paid from marital funds. Our hidden-asset guide for Colorado divorces explains how that spending is usually documented for counsel.
Parenting cases are another reason. If a parent leaves children with someone unfamiliar to travel with a new partner, or misses court-ordered parenting time for trips, those facts relate to the best-interest factors in C.R.S. § 14-10-124. We write out-of-state reports in the same format as Colorado reports, so your attorney receives one consistent record. If an investigator's testimony is needed, we plan for that from the start. Our attorney support services in Colorado describe how we coordinate with counsel.

How Out-of-State Infidelity Investigations for Colorado Clients Are Priced
Investigative time is billed at $100 per hour, the same rate we charge in Colorado and Tennessee. Travel is the variable: airfare, mileage, lodging and any hours spent moving between locations are estimated and confirmed in writing before anything is booked. Covering a specific window at the destination, such as one evening and the following morning, usually costs far less than following a spouse for an entire trip. Our Colorado pricing page lists every standard rate.
Planning saves money. The more you can tell us about flight numbers, hotels, conference schedules and rental cars, the fewer hours we spend confirming basics. If a companion needs to be identified, a $102 basic or $300 deep-dive background check can often replace extra surveillance. We report after each shift so you can stop the moment the question is answered. Our explanation of investigator costs in Colorado shows how estimates are built, or you can contact Delator leadership directly.

Statewide coverage
Where Our Out-of-State Infidelity Cases Begin
Most trips start along the Front Range. Our Lakewood investigators cover west-metro departures, the Centennial surveillance team handles south-metro clients in Arapahoe County, and Colorado Springs investigators cover flights from the Colorado Springs airport. For destinations north of the line, our Wyoming team coordinates directly with the Colorado investigators. Western Slope and southwest departures are planned from the nearest regional airport with travel priced first, and every leg ends up in the same report. Clients outside Colorado whose spouse is visiting the state are welcome too, and their reports are sent wherever they live.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Can you follow my spouse onto a plane?
We do not try to board flights alongside a subject. Instead, we confirm the departure, note any companion and have an investigator waiting at the destination. That approach is more discreet and usually less expensive. If you know the flight number and hotel, the destination investigator can be in position before your spouse lands.
Do investigators need a license in the other state?
It depends on the state, and sometimes the city. Colorado has no state private investigator license, but many states do. Wyoming has no statewide license, though Cheyenne requires a local business license for private detectives. We confirm the destination's requirements before any shift and assign someone who can lawfully work there.
Are recording laws the same in other states?
No. Colorado requires one participant's consent to record a conversation, and other states set their own rules. Our investigators do not record private conversations anywhere, which avoids the problem. Photographs and video are taken only from public places. For the destination's side, our multi-state legal checklist is a starting point. Our plain-English guide to what Colorado investigators may do explains the home-state rules.
How do I know which part of the trip to cover?
We help you decide. Usually the evenings and the first morning are the most revealing, because business hours are accounted for. If a companion is traveling separately, arrival times and hotel check-ins matter most. We would rather cover four meaningful hours than twenty uneventful ones, and we will tell you if a trip is unlikely to answer your question.
What if my spouse drives instead of flying?
A drive is often easier to plan, especially to Wyoming, Nebraska or Utah. We can begin with a departure check in Colorado and pick up coverage at the destination. Mountain routes are harder in winter because of chain-law conditions and closures, so we build that into the schedule. Our out-of-state surveillance coordination covers the details.
Can the evidence be used in my Colorado divorce?
Often, but its purpose is usually financial or parenting related rather than fault, because Colorado divides property and awards maintenance without regard to marital misconduct. Your attorney decides how to use it. We write out-of-state reports in our standard format and plan for investigator testimony if counsel expects to need it.
Do you take cases where the spouse is visiting Colorado?
Yes. Out-of-state clients often hire us when a spouse visits Denver, a ski town or Colorado Springs. We cover hotels, resort lodging and evening meetings from public vantage points and send the report to you or your attorney wherever you live. Our Colorado resort and hotel surveillance page explains that work.
How much do out-of-state infidelity investigations for Colorado clients cost?
Investigative time is $100 per hour. Travel, including airfare, lodging and mileage, is estimated and confirmed in writing before anything is booked. A targeted assignment covering a single evening and morning at the destination is much less expensive than following a spouse for an entire trip, and you approve every added hour.
Will my spouse notice an investigator at a hotel or conference?
We work to prevent it. Investigators avoid repeated positions, use public areas such as lobbies, sidewalks and parking areas open to guests and the public, and leave when asked. At smaller resort properties, fewer shifts at the right times are usually safer than long periods of coverage that risk exposure.
Can you identify the person my spouse is traveling with?
Usually, if they appear more than once or arrive with a vehicle or a known name. We rely only on lawful public records and never use pretexting or account hacking to get there. A basic check costs $102 and a deep-dive history $300. Our relationship background check service describes what each level includes.
