01How we cover the state
How Delator Group Covers Idaho from Nashville
Delator Group is a private investigation and process serving firm with its headquarters in Nashville, Tennessee. We keep no Idaho office and make no claim to one. What clients get instead is a corporate structure with a single chain of command, leadership with military and federal law-enforcement backgrounds, and vetted investigators assigned close to the courthouse that matters. The leadership team that supervises our Tennessee files supervises Idaho files too, so reporting standards, pricing discipline and accountability stay the same wherever the work lands.
Idaho is really two working regions joined by long mountain highways. Southern Idaho runs along the Snake River Plain through the Treasure Valley, the Magic Valley, Pocatello and Idaho Falls, linked by Interstate 84 and Interstate 15. North Idaho, the Panhandle, keeps Pacific time and looks west to Spokane rather than south to Boise, and the drive between Boise and Coeur d'Alene runs close to 390 miles. We treat a file that touches both regions as two separate field plans, each scoped and priced before travel begins.
Clients who retain private investigators in Idaho through Delator are mostly attorneys, insurers, employers and individuals who need facts documented in a way a judge or claims examiner will credit. Some matters spill across borders, and our neighboring Wyoming coverage handles cases that drift east from Idaho Falls toward Jackson or Afton. Whatever the problem, the starting point is a confidential consultation with Delator leadership, where we tell you plainly whether an investigation is likely to answer your question.
- North Idaho and southern Idaho planned as separate field operations
- Assignments built around the filing courthouse
- One chain of command, intake through report
- Written scope and price before any work begins
02Family matters
Infidelity, Divorce and Custody Investigations Under Idaho Law
Idaho Code 32-603 still lists fault-based grounds for divorce, including adultery, extreme cruelty, willful desertion, willful neglect, habitual intemperance and felony conviction, as well as irreconcilable differences. Most couples use the no-fault ground. Idaho is also a community property state, and under Idaho Code 32-906 property acquired by either spouse during the marriage is generally community property. That makes the timing of purchases, transfers and side income important, and it is often where an investigator adds more value than in proving an affair.
In custody disputes the magistrate judge focuses on the child's best interests, and good evidence is specific. We document who handles exchanges and school routines, whether a parent drinks or uses before parenting time, who else stays overnight in the home, and whether a claimed work schedule is real. We work lawfully from public vantage points, never trespass, never misrepresent who we are and never install tracking devices on a vehicle. Findings are written in plain, dated entries that a judge can follow without testimony to interpret them.
Recording questions come up in nearly every family file. Idaho Code 18-6702 generally permits interception when one party to the communication has given prior consent, so a participant can usually record a call. Recording conversations you are not part of is another matter entirely. Idaho's stalking statutes also matter: second-degree stalking under Idaho Code 18-7906 can include maintaining surveillance on a person, including by electronic means, as part of a malicious course of conduct. Talk to your attorney first, then ask what evidence we can gather lawfully.
- Infidelity surveillance with dated photographs
- Parenting-time and exchange documentation
- Cohabitation and household checks
- Community property and hidden-income research
03For attorneys
Litigation Support in Idaho's District, Magistrate and Federal Courts
Idaho uses an integrated trial court. The district court is the court of general jurisdiction, organized into seven judicial districts, and its magistrate division handles misdemeanors, preliminary hearings, juvenile and probate matters, evictions, smaller civil claims and most family cases. The small claims department sits within the magistrate division, with a jurisdictional limit of $15,000 under Idaho Code 1-2301. Appeals go to the Idaho Supreme Court or, when assigned, the Idaho Court of Appeals. Ada County sits in the Fourth District, Canyon in the Third and Kootenai in the First.
Federal cases go to the United States District Court for the District of Idaho, which organizes the state into a Southern Division in Boise, a Northern Division in Coeur d'Alene, a Central Division in Moscow and an Eastern Division in Pocatello. Appeals go to the Ninth Circuit. A defense or civil investigation tied to the Northern or Central Division often means witnesses scattered across the Panhandle, the Palouse and the Clearwater country, and we factor that geography into the written scope from the start.
For counsel we locate and interview witnesses, research parties and experts, photograph and measure scenes, rebuild timelines from records and retrieve documents. Criminal defense work is quoted from $750 for a misdemeanor, $1,000 for one felony and $1,500 for multiple charges, while civil litigation support carries a $1,000 minimum. Reports identify sources and methods so they can withstand cross-examination. Firms with files in more than one state can compare our South Dakota coverage or read about Delator Group's leadership.
- Witness location and recorded statements
- Scene photographs and measurements
- Background research on parties, experts and jurors
- Records retrieval and timeline reconstruction
04Business and insurance
Corporate and Insurance Investigations Across Idaho's Economy
Idaho's economy is broader than its potato reputation, though agriculture remains central. The state leads the nation in potato production and ranks among the top producers of milk and cheese, with dairies and processors concentrated in the Magic Valley. Boise is home to Micron Technology, eastern Idaho hosts the Idaho National Laboratory, and timber, mining and outdoor tourism still shape the north. Each sector produces its own disputes, from equipment and water-use conflicts to trade-secret concerns and contractor fraud.
Our corporate investigations address employee theft, inventory loss, vendor kickbacks, conflicts of interest and misconduct by partners or managers. We interview witnesses, trace transactions, search public filings and assemble a report that supports discipline, a civil claim or a referral to prosecutors. Compliance audits start at $1,200, asset investigations carry a $1,000 minimum and scam investigations start at $2,000, all confirmed in writing. Remote due diligence reports on a vendor or acquisition target cost $300.
Insurance work is the other half of this practice. We handle activity checks and surveillance on workers' compensation and liability claims, residency and employment verification, witness canvasses after collisions on I-84 or US-95, and inquiries into suspicious property or crop losses. Rural claimants and seasonal work demand patient planning, and a ranch outside Salmon calls for a different approach than an apartment in Meridian. We review the claim with your adjuster before committing billable hours.
- Employee theft and internal misconduct inquiries
- Vendor, partner and acquisition due diligence
- Workers' compensation and liability claim surveillance
- Agricultural, dairy and equipment disputes
05Locates and service
Skip Tracing, Locates and Process Serving in Idaho
A missing defendant or witness can stall an Idaho case badly, because Idaho Rule of Civil Procedure 4(b)(2) generally requires dismissal without prejudice if a defendant is not served within 182 days after the complaint is filed, absent good cause. Our basic remote skip trace costs $102. When records leave doubt, a field-work skip trace starting at $1,000 sends an investigator to confirm a residence, workplace or vehicle. We document each step so the findings can support a motion if service becomes contested.
Delator Field Services, the firm's process serving division, coordinates service in all 44 counties. Outside Tennessee a serve may be carried out by a vetted server Delator contracts with, working under our documentation standard of logged, time-stamped attempts, notes on each contact and a signed affidavit of service. Routine service in Ada County starts at a published rate of $125, with Urgent, Rush and Same Day Rush at 1.5, 2 and 3 times Routine. You can look up any Idaho county's starting rate before you order.
Under Idaho Rule of Civil Procedure 4(c)(2), process may generally be served by an officer authorized by law or by any person over 18 who is not a party to the action. Rule 4(d)(1) generally permits personal delivery, or leaving copies at the individual's dwelling or usual place of abode with someone at least 18 who resides there. Proof by a private server is generally an affidavit under Rule 4(g). Your attorney can confirm the right method, and we put the serve plan and price in writing.
- Remote skip traces from $102
- Field locates from $1,000
- Personal, abode and registered agent service
- Signed affidavit with every completed serve
06Know the rules
Idaho Has No Statewide PI License: How to Vet an Investigator
Idaho does not require a statewide license to work as a private investigator. A local business license may apply depending on the city, but the state itself does not screen investigators for criminal history, training or insurance. Delator Group is a licensed Tennessee private investigation firm, and we apply Tennessee's licensing standard in every state we work, Idaho included. We will not claim an Idaho credential that does not exist, and you should be wary of anyone who does.
Vetting private investigators in Idaho falls to the client, so ask pointed questions. Who will actually do the field work, and what is that person's background? Will the firm show proof of insurance? Does it give you a written scope and a firm price, or ask for an open-ended retainer? Are its reports written for court, and has it stood behind them under oath? Does it understand Idaho's recording, stalking and trespass rules, and will it turn down work that would break them? Vague answers are a warning sign.
Investigators in Idaho have no police powers. They cannot enter private land without permission, obtain protected records without authorization, impersonate officers or intercept communications. Idaho's trespass laws, tightened in 2018, generally treat land that is cultivated, fenced or posted as private, and we plan surveillance around that. Effective work comes from lawful observation, interviews with willing witnesses, open-source research and public records. We spell out those limits in the written scope. For comparison, our South Dakota page covers another state without a PI license.
- Ask who will do the field work
- Request proof of insurance
- Insist on a written scope and price
- Confirm the firm writes reports for court
07An Idaho reality
Two Idahos: The Boise Metro and the Coeur d'Alene and Spokane Corridor
The Treasure Valley carries most of southern Idaho's caseload. Boise, Meridian, Nampa and Caldwell share a fast-growing metro split between Ada County in the Fourth District and Canyon County in the Third, so a single family or business dispute can involve parties, records and witnesses in two judicial districts. Federal cases in the Southern Division are heard in Boise. Rapid growth means newer subdivisions, frequent moves and short rental histories, which shape how we approach locates and residence verification.
North Idaho functions as part of the Inland Northwest. Coeur d'Alene sits about 32 miles from Spokane on Interstate 90, the Panhandle keeps Pacific time, and many residents work, bank or shop in Washington while living in Kootenai or Bonner County. A subject who lives in Post Falls may spend the workday in Spokane Valley, so surveillance and locates often cross the state line. We scope that cross-border work explicitly, and we flag when a Washington court or rule may govern part of the matter.
Tribal lands add another layer in both regions. The Coeur d'Alene and Nez Perce tribes are in the north, and the Shoshone-Bannock Tribes of the Fort Hall Reservation, north of Pocatello, and the Shoshone-Paiute Tribes of Duck Valley are in the south. Each tribe runs its own government and courts, and jurisdiction over service or investigation on tribal land depends on the parties and the case. We confirm the forum with counsel before acting. To see how we organize multistate work, explore our statewide coverage.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Does Idaho require a private investigator license?
No. Idaho has no statewide private investigator license, although a city business license may apply. Because the state does not screen investigators, vetting is up to you. Delator Group is a licensed Tennessee firm that applies Tennessee's licensing standard in every state it works, and we provide a written scope, proof of insurance and court-ready reports. Ask any investigator you consider for the same.
Where is Delator Group based, and who supervises Idaho cases?
Delator Group is headquartered in Nashville, Tennessee, and has no Idaho office. Idaho files are supervised by the same leadership that runs our Tennessee casework, and field work is assigned to vetted investigators near the county involved. You deal with one chain of command from intake to final report. Read more about the firm.
How much does a private investigator cost in Idaho?
Our standard investigative rate is $100 per hour. Case-based work has published minimums, such as $1,000 for civil litigation support or a single felony defense and $1,500 for multiple charges. Remote background checks start at $102 and due diligence reports at $300. Travel between north and south Idaho is scoped in advance, and the total is confirmed in writing before work starts.
Is it legal to record a phone call in Idaho?
Idaho Code 18-6702 generally allows interception when one party to the communication has given prior consent, so a participant can usually record a call. Recording a conversation you are not part of, or hiding a device to capture other people's conversations, can violate state and federal law. Speak with your attorney before recording anything connected to a divorce, custody or business dispute.
Who can serve legal papers in Idaho?
Under Idaho Rule of Civil Procedure 4(c)(2), service may generally be made by an authorized officer or by any person over 18 who is not a party. Abode service with a resident at least 18 years old is generally permitted. Delator Field Services coordinates service statewide; you can check county starting rates, and your attorney can confirm the method for your case.
How long do I have to serve a defendant in Idaho?
Idaho Rule of Civil Procedure 4(b)(2) generally requires the court to dismiss the action against a defendant without prejudice if service is not made within 182 days after the complaint is filed, unless good cause is shown. If a defendant is avoiding service or has moved, start a skip trace early so the deadline does not become the problem. Your attorney can advise on extensions.
How much does process serving cost in Idaho?
Published Routine starting rates vary by county, from $125 in the Boise, Coeur d'Alene, Pocatello and Idaho Falls areas to higher rates in remote counties far from a metro. Urgent service is 1.5 times Routine, Rush is 2 times and Same Day Rush is 3 times. The rate finder on this page shows every county, and the final price is confirmed in writing first.
Can you follow a case from Coeur d'Alene into Spokane?
Yes. North Idaho and Spokane function as one regional economy, and subjects regularly live in Kootenai County and work in Washington. We scope cross-border surveillance and locates explicitly, note where Washington law may govern part of the work, and keep a single report and a single point of contact for the client throughout the engagement.
Do you support federal cases in Idaho?
Yes. The U.S. District Court for the District of Idaho holds court in Boise, Coeur d'Alene, Moscow and Pocatello, and appeals go to the Ninth Circuit. We support defense and civil counsel with witness location, interviews, scene documentation and records research, and we plan travel to fit the division where the case sits. Call us to talk through a federal matter before the scope is set.
Can an investigator help in an Idaho community property dispute?
Often, yes. Idaho Code 32-906 generally treats property acquired during the marriage as community property, so undisclosed income, business interests or transfers can matter a great deal. We research real property, business filings, vehicles and judgments, document lifestyle evidence lawfully, and give your attorney a sourced report. Asset investigations start at a $1,000 minimum.
