01Local service landscape
A Consolidated City With Two Small Towns Inside It
Richmond County and the City of Augusta operate as one consolidated government, with about 207,000 residents (2025 estimate). Two small municipalities, Blythe and Hephzibah, remain independent inside the county. In practice, most addresses read simply as Augusta, from downtown and the Summerville neighborhood on the Hill to subdivisions in south and west Augusta. Our Augusta process serving page covers the city in more depth.
Interstate 20 crosses the north of the county toward Atlanta and South Carolina, and the Savannah River forms the state line along the east, with North Augusta, South Carolina, just across it. Southern Richmond County is more rural, with longer drives between addresses around Hephzibah and Blythe. We plan routes so those attempts are grouped. Richmond's tier is shown on the Georgia service price map.
- Downtown, Summerville and central Augusta
- West Augusta near the Columbia County line
- South Augusta, Hephzibah and Blythe

02Attorneys and law firms
Support for Firms Filing on James Brown Boulevard
Augusta's courts cluster on James Brown Boulevard, where the Superior and State Court clerk addresses sit a short distance from the federal courthouse. Local firms, Atlanta counsel and South Carolina lawyers with Georgia defendants all file here. They want service made efficiently, the affidavit returned in time to file and regular updates. Our attorney service page explains the intake fields that matter most.
Business defendants range from healthcare and university-linked employers to contractors, manufacturers and retailers. We serve an officer, a managing agent at the Georgia office or the registered agent, and explain the Secretary of State fallback if none can be reached. Because many companies operate on both sides of the river, our registered agent service page also covers foreign entities registered to do business in Georgia.
03Evasive and hard-to-serve
Cross-River Commuters and Defendants Who Avoid the Door
Many people live in Georgia and work in South Carolina, or the reverse, so a Richmond County defendant may spend most daylight hours outside the state. We ask counsel for any workplace and schedule home attempts around commuting patterns. Apartment communities near the medical district and gated subdivisions in west Augusta add access questions, and Georgia's rule in O.C.G.A. 9-11-4(f)(4) governs entry into secured communities.
When someone deliberately avoids service, we vary the hours and days, consider other appropriate places if counsel approves, and log every attempt with what was seen. That detail supports counsel if the court is later asked about another method, and you can ask us to review a stalled Augusta serve at any point. Our hard-to-serve defendants page and guide for evasive parties explain how a diligence record is built.

Augusta Divorce Cases, Magistrate Claims and Dispossessories
Divorce, custody and support papers in Richmond County Superior Court are served under the Civil Practice Act, with personal service, abode service or a signed acknowledgment as the usual paths. We handle these deliveries carefully and confirm identity before anything changes hands. Richmond County Magistrate Court hears claims of $15,000 or less, generally answered within 30 days; see our magistrate court service for details.
Augusta has a large rental market, including housing used by military families. Since July 1, 2025, O.C.G.A. 44-7-51 lists an approved process server among those who may serve a dispossessory summons, but the statute does not define the term. We confirm the Richmond Magistrate Court's practice before accepting any dispossessory and never carry out writs. See Georgia eviction service and subpoena delivery.
05Documentation and challenges
A Return Ready for the Augusta Circuit
A Georgia affidavit of service must give the date, place and manner of service, and a private server files it with the court where the case is pending. The answer period generally does not start until proof is filed. We return the signed affidavit promptly so counsel can file within five business days, consistent with O.C.G.A. 9-11-4(h). Our Georgia legal papers guide describes each required element.
Challenges in Richmond County often involve abode recipients in shared housing, whether a commuter was actually served in Georgia, and diligence before a limitation date. Our notes are written at each attempt, so counsel can respond with specifics. Georgia allows the court to permit an amended proof when no material prejudice results. When time is short, the Georgia rush service page explains how tiers work.
06Georgia service rules
Who May Serve Papers in Augusta Under Georgia Law
Under Georgia law, papers may generally be served by a sheriff or deputy, a marshal, a citizen specially appointed by the court, a non-party adult appointed by the court or as a permanent process server, or a certified process server under O.C.G.A. 9-11-4.1. Certified servers must file a yearly notice of intent with each county sheriff that accepts them. Our guide on authorized Georgia servers explains each route.
DFS does not hold any Georgia certification or Richmond County appointment, and we do not suggest otherwise. Each Augusta file is matched to a server who satisfies the issuing court's rules for that paper, and we confirm that match in writing before we accept the serve. If a court does not take private service for a document, we say so, and the papers go to the Sheriff. The Georgia process serving overview has the statewide summary, and Delator Group's background explains our documentation habits.
07Local angle
Fort Gordon, the Columbia Circuit Split and South Carolina
Fort Gordon, which carried the name Fort Eisenhower until June 2025, sits on Augusta's southwest side. Service on an installation depends on base access rules, so we coordinate with counsel before any attempt there, and off-post residences are served normally. Before a default, federal law requires an affidavit stating whether the defendant is in military service. Our Columbia County process service covers neighboring Grovetown and Evans.
Columbia County left the Augusta Circuit to form its own Columbia Circuit in 2021 to 2022, according to news reports, so a Martinez or Evans case now goes to the Columbia clerk rather than Augusta. Cases filed in South Carolina against a Georgia resident are matched to that court's rule. See our papers from other states page or the South Carolina service page to talk through a cross-border file.
- Fort Gordon restored as the post's name in 2025
- Columbia Circuit split from the Augusta Circuit
- North Augusta, SC, across the river
- Base attempts coordinated with counsel

Process Servers Near Richmond County
Richmond County anchors the Central Savannah River Area, and many of its cases reach into neighboring Georgia counties. Martinez, Evans and Grovetown are covered by Columbia County service, and the city itself in more detail by Augusta process servers. Cases that move west toward the university town are handled through Athens papers and attempts, while I-16 matters reach Statesboro coverage. Each uses the same written quote, logged attempts and signed affidavit, so counsel reviewing returns from several counties sees one consistent format.
FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Who can serve process in Richmond County, Georgia?
Georgia generally permits a sheriff or deputy, a marshal, a court-appointed or permanent process server, or a certified server whose notice of intent the Richmond County Sheriff accepts. Whether a court accepts private service can depend on the document. We assign a server who meets that court's requirements and confirm it in writing before taking the serve.
How much does a process server in Richmond County cost?
Routine service has a published starting rate of $150 in Richmond County. Urgent is $225, Rush $300 and Same Day Rush $450, which are 1.5, 2 and 3 times Routine. Your own figure reflects the address, the deadline and the documents, and you see it in writing before any attempt. The rate map compares nearby counties.
Why is Richmond County priced higher than Atlanta?
DFS sets county rates by population and distance from the nearest metro area. Richmond County sits farther from Atlanta, so its Routine starting rate is $150 rather than the $125 metro tier. The tier multiples are the same everywhere, and your exact price is always written down before work begins.
Is service possible on a Fort Gordon soldier?
Service on a military installation depends on base access rules, so we coordinate with counsel before any attempt there. Off-post homes in Augusta, Grovetown or Hephzibah are served normally. Before a default, the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act requires an affidavit on the defendant's military status, which counsel prepares, often using the DMDC SCRA website.
My defendant lives in North Augusta, South Carolina. Can you help?
This page covers Georgia service. For a defendant in South Carolina, the papers must be served under the rules that apply there and in the issuing court. Tell us about the case and we will explain options, including our South Carolina process serving page, so counsel can decide how to proceed.
Will you serve a dispossessory in Augusta?
We first confirm the Richmond Magistrate Court's current practice. Georgia's 2025 change to O.C.G.A. 44-7-51 lists an approved process server without defining it, so courts differ. Writs and set-outs are carried out by law enforcement, not by our servers, and we will tell you plainly if the court sends the summons to the Sheriff. The Georgia dispossessory guide explains the 7-day answer and posting-and-mailing.
Can papers be left with a roommate in Augusta?
Possibly. Abode service under O.C.G.A. 9-11-4(e)(7) generally requires a person of suitable age and discretion who resides at the defendant's dwelling. A roommate who actually lives there may qualify; a visitor, a neighbor or a babysitter generally does not. We record who took the papers and why the server believed that person lived there, leaving counsel to judge whether abode service suits the matter or personal delivery should continue.
Is a Martinez or Evans case filed in Augusta?
Usually not anymore. Columbia County formed its own Columbia Judicial Circuit after splitting from the Augusta Circuit, according to news coverage, and its Superior Court clerk is in Evans. Check the caption before sending papers. We read it first and prepare the affidavit for the court that actually issued the summons.
What if a Richmond County defendant cannot be served?
Our servers change the timing of visits and write up each one. If the record still shows no success, counsel may ask the court about publication under O.C.G.A. 9-11-4(f)(1), which requires an affidavit that the defendant cannot be found after due diligence, has left Georgia, or is concealing himself. Our publication guide explains the newspaper notice schedule.
Do you serve divorce papers in Augusta?
Yes. We serve divorce, custody and support papers personally or at the residence, quietly and with identity confirmed before delivery. A cooperative spouse may sign an acknowledgment of service instead, which our family papers service can present. Our guide to serving divorce papers in Georgia explains each method and the waiting period counsel should confirm.
