Quick answer
What do Colorado process servers charge by county?
Delator Field Services publishes a Routine starting rate for every Colorado county, from $125 in Denver, Adams, Arapahoe, Broomfield, El Paso, Jefferson, La Plata, Larimer, Mesa, Pueblo and Weld to $255 in Sedgwick. Faster levels cost 1.5, 2 and 3 times Routine. The statewide Colorado process serving page explains what each serve includes.
01How rates are set
How Process Server Rates in Colorado Are Set County by County
Two inputs set process server rates in Colorado for every county: how many people live there, and how far the county sits from the nearest metro base a server works from. In Colorado those bases are Denver, Colorado Springs, Fort Collins, Greeley, Pueblo, Grand Junction and Durango. Counties that contain or adjoin a base, such as Jefferson, Weld, Mesa and La Plata, start at $125. Our Lakewood process server page shows how that works for Jefferson County.
As a county gets smaller and farther from a base, the starting rate climbs. Douglas County starts at $130 and Boulder at $135, both close to Denver. Mountain counties such as Summit at $170, Eagle at $195 and Routt at $205 reflect longer drives over passes. The highest figures belong to the far Eastern Plains, where Kit Carson and Phillips start at $245, Baca and Cheyenne at $250 and Sedgwick at $255. Process server rates in Colorado are published so you can see that pattern before you order, and the Douglas County service page covers the fast-growing south metro.
The rate does not change with the client, the court or the type of paper. A summons from Denver District Court and a small claims notice from a county court in Lamar are both priced by the county where the person is served. Investigation work is priced separately; the Colorado investigation price list explains those rules, and the Colorado process serving overview explains how each serve is documented from first attempt to filed affidavit.
02Service levels
Routine, Urgent, Rush and Same Day Rush in Colorado
Each county has four levels. Routine targets a first attempt in five to seven days, Urgent in three to five days and Rush in one to two days, at 1.5 and 2 times the Routine rate. Same Day Rush, at three times Routine, aims for an attempt within two hours of receipt and is assessed case by case. In the City and County of Denver, those levels are $125, $188, $250 and $375. Firms with short deadlines often start with our Aurora process serving, where the same figures apply in Arapahoe and Adams counties.
Target windows are goals, not guarantees. A mountain serve during a chain-law day on I-70, or a ranch address after a spring storm on the plains, can take longer than the tier suggests. We tell you when weather or access moves an attempt, and we do not sell Same Day Rush where distance or road conditions make it unrealistic. Counsel weighing a rush against the 63-day service window under C.R.C.P. 4(m) can talk it through with us, and our Colorado litigation support team can step in if the defendant has moved.
03Distance and terrain
Why Plains, Valley and Mountain Counties Cost More
Colorado's geography explains most of the spread. The Eastern Plains stretch from the Front Range to the Kansas and Nebraska lines with small county seats separated by long highway miles, so a single serve in Yuma or Kiowa County can mean most of a day on the road. The San Luis Valley in the south-central part of the state, with Alamosa at $200 and Conejos at $220, sits behind mountain passes from both Pueblo and Durango. Western Slope counties follow the same logic around our Grand Junction serves.
Mountain counties add weather and seasonal housing. Colorado's traction and chain laws apply on the I-70 corridor from September 1 through May 31, and closures near Vail Pass or in Glenwood Canyon can delay an attempt. In resort counties, many people live in seasonal rentals or employer housing, which can mean more attempts to find them home. Our Garfield County service team plans Glenwood Springs and Rifle work around those realities, and the published rate already reflects them.
04What the rate includes
What a Colorado Starting Rate Covers
Every published rate includes attempts at varied times and on different days, a written log of each attempt with the time and place, and a completed affidavit of service. In Colorado that is usually the state's JDF 98 form, signed under penalty of perjury, or the form the issuing court requires. The affidavit records the documents served, the manner of service and, for abode service, the relationship of the family member 18 or older who accepted the papers. Northern Colorado clients can see this in practice on the Fort Collins serve page.
The rate also covers service on a refusing defendant under C.R.C.P. 4(k), where the server identifies the person and the papers and leaves a copy nearby, and workplace service on listed staff under C.R.C.P. 4(e)(1). If service keeps failing, the attempt log is written to support a motion for substituted service under C.R.C.P. 4(f). A locate, if one is needed, is quoted separately; our skip trace pricing in Colorado starts at $102.
05Special papers
Eviction, Small Claims and Publication Cases
Eviction papers are priced at the county rate like any other serve. In a Colorado FED case, the summons and complaint must be served personally or, after diligent effort, posted on the premises by a qualified server with the landlord mailing a copy first class, at least seven days before the appearance date. JDF 98 includes a checkbox for eviction posting. Only the sheriff executes a writ of restitution, so removals are never part of our rate. Weld County landlords use our Greeley eviction and civil serves.
Small claims papers, for disputes up to $7,500, must be served at least 15 days before trial, and the state's self-help instructions ask the server to sign the small claims affidavit before a notary. Publication is different: it is limited to property and status actions by court order and runs once a week for five successive weeks in a county newspaper, so it is handled by counsel and the newspaper rather than a server. Southern Colorado filings go through our Pueblo process server.
06Venue questions
Denver's Courts, Split Cities and Tribal Land
Some Colorado addresses need a venue check before a price is final. Denver has four separate courts, County, District, Probate and Juvenile, and the Denver Sheriff's civil unit serves only within the City and County of Denver. Aurora spans Arapahoe, Adams and Douglas counties, and Arvada, Westminster, Longmont and Littleton each cross county lines, so we confirm which county an address sits in before we quote. For Denver papers, see the Denver process server page.
In southwest Colorado, service on Southern Ute or Ute Mountain Ute land may be governed by tribal law and tribal court rules, and whether state process is effective depends on the parties, the land status and the claim. We confirm the method with counsel, and with the tribal court where needed, before any attempt, and the price is set only after that. La Plata County work starts with our Durango process serving coverage.
07Ordering
Ordering a Colorado Serve at a Published Rate
Find the county in the finder or the table, choose the service level, and send the filed papers with every address you have, a description or photo of the person, and any answer, hearing or trial date. We confirm the county, the level and the final price in writing before the first attempt. If several defendants live in different counties, each is priced at its own county rate and the totals appear in one quote. Pikes Peak papers follow the same steps through our El Paso County serve coverage.
Defendants outside Colorado are priced by their own state's county rates, and the rate map covering every state we serve shows them side by side. Resort-county papers in Breckenridge, Frisco or Silverthorne go through our Summit County process serving, and Vail-area papers through the Eagle County serve page. Mixed jobs, such as a serve in Thornton and another in Steamboat Springs, are quoted together so the timing of both is clear from the start.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Why do process server rates in Colorado vary by county?
A county's figure comes from two things: its population and how far it lies from the closest metro base for servers. Eleven counties start at $125 for Routine service, mountain counties run from roughly $150 to $205, and the far Eastern Plains reach $255 in Sedgwick County. Each number on the map is a starting point, and the exact price is agreed in writing before a server goes out.
What is the starting rate for a serve inside the City and County of Denver?
Routine service in the City and County of Denver starts at $125. Urgent is $188, Rush is $250 and Same Day Rush is $375 where it can be arranged. Denver has four separate courts, and the Denver Sheriff's civil unit serves only inside Denver, so we confirm the address is within the city and county before quoting. The Denver serve page has more detail.
Are there extra charges beyond the published rate?
The published figure is a starting rate, and the final price is confirmed in writing before the first attempt, so nothing is added afterward without your approval. If an address turns out to be wrong, we stop and quote a locate rather than continuing to bill attempts. Several defendants are each priced at their own county rate, and the combined total appears in one quote.
What is the difference between Urgent, Rush and Same Day Rush?
Urgent targets a first attempt in three to five days at 1.5 times Routine. Rush targets one to two days at twice Routine. Same Day Rush aims for an attempt within two hours of receipt at three times Routine and is assessed case by case. Mountain weather, chain-law days and long plains drives can affect any target, and we tell you when they do.
Do you charge the same rate for eviction papers?
Yes. FED eviction summonses are priced at the county's published rate. Colorado generally requires personal service or, after diligent effort, posting by a qualified server plus the landlord's first-class mailing, at least seven days before the appearance date. Only the sheriff executes a writ of restitution, which is outside our service. Landlords who want to avoid evictions start with Colorado rental applicant checks.
How do Colorado sheriff fees compare with private service?
Colorado caps sheriff fees by statute, generally at actual expenses up to $35 per party for civil process plus mileage, and each county posts its own schedule. Sheriffs serve only within their county, some do not research addresses, and some do not expedite. Private service under C.R.C.P. 4(d) offers set service levels and attempt logs, and our rates are published so you can compare before choosing.
Why are mountain county rates higher?
Mountain counties combine smaller populations, longer drives and winter conditions. Summit County starts at $170, Eagle at $195 and Routt at $205. Colorado's chain and traction laws apply on the I-70 corridor from September through May, and resort housing often means more attempts to find someone home. Our Eagle County process serving page explains how those serves are scheduled.
Can I see rates for other states on one map?
Yes. Our rate finder for every state we serve lists published county starting rates for Colorado alongside Wyoming, South Dakota, Idaho, Mississippi, Virginia, South Carolina, Georgia and Kentucky. Each state's rates follow the same method, based on population and distance to the nearest metro base, with the same Urgent, Rush and Same Day Rush multiples.
What if I do not know which county the defendant is in?
Send every address you have and we will confirm the county before quoting. This matters in Colorado because Aurora, Arvada, Westminster, Longmont and Littleton each span more than one county. If no current address is known, a $102 database skip trace usually comes first. Our Colorado debtor and defendant locates handle harder cases from $1,000.
Is the final price ever different from the map?
The map shows published starting rates. The final price depends on the exact location, the service level and whether the papers are ready to serve, and it is always confirmed in writing before the first attempt. If a venue question, a tribal-land issue or a seasonal address affects the job, we raise it in that written confirmation rather than after the work is done.
