Quick answer
How do I hire a process server in Adams County?
Send the filed papers and the address. Because several Adams County cities cross into Jefferson, Arapahoe or Weld County, we first confirm the county, then the tier and price in writing, before a server logs each attempt. Routine service in Adams County has a published starting rate of $125, and the statewide rate map covers neighboring counties.
01Local service landscape
Serving Papers Across a County of Split Cities
Adams County had an estimated 554,700 residents in 2025, up from about 519,600 in 2020. Thornton, with roughly 148,000 people, lies entirely within the county, but Westminster and Arvada cross into Jefferson County, Aurora and Bennett into Arapahoe, and Brighton and Lochbuie into Weld. A city name on an address does not settle the county. We confirm each one before quoting, and Arapahoe-side Aurora addresses go through Aurora process serving.
The county runs from dense older neighborhoods near the Denver line in Welby, Sherrelwood and Federal Heights, through the subdivisions of Thornton and Northglenn, to the industrial corridors of Commerce City and the open plains east toward Bennett, Watkins and Strasburg. Servers plan routes by geography and time of day. When an address is uncertain, our Thornton investigators can confirm where the defendant lives now.
- Thornton, Northglenn, Federal Heights and Westminster
- Commerce City industrial and rail corridors
- Brighton and the Weld County line
- Plains communities near Bennett and Strasburg
02Attorneys and law firms
Service for North-Metro Firms Filing in Brighton
Adams County civil, domestic and probate cases are filed at the Justice Center on Judicial Center Drive in Brighton, the county seat. North-metro and Denver firms send us collection suits, vehicle and injury claims, construction disputes, landlord-tenant matters and employment cases involving the county's warehouses, plants and distribution centers. Delator's attorney services in Colorado give each firm one coordinator for the written quote, the attempts and the signed return.
Out-of-state counsel often start with only a Thornton or Westminster mailing address and discover the county question later. We check the address, the case caption and the issuing court before quoting, and raise any mismatch with counsel. When a former employee or witness has moved, witness background research and lost contact searches can run alongside service, and our Westminster investigators cover the west side.
03Evasive and hard-to-serve
Warehouse Shifts, Airport Jobs and Defendants Who Move Often
Adams County is a working county. Warehouses, distribution centers, trucking terminals and industrial plants run round-the-clock shifts, and many residents work at or around Denver International Airport. Daytime attempts at home often miss them. Servers try early mornings, evenings and weekends, log every attempt with the result, and note when a family member says the person works nights so the next visit can be timed better.
Some defendants move between apartments or relatives' homes across the north metro to avoid papers. A Delator investigator can take over through locating defendants who avoid service, working from public records and lawful field observation. The attempt log supports the server's affidavit for a C.R.C.P. 4(f) motion. Employers dealing with losses can ask about employee theft investigations and stolen equipment recovery.
04Family law, evictions and subpoenas
Family Law, FED, Small Claims and Subpoenas in Adams County
Adams County dissolution and allocation-of-parental-responsibilities cases are generally heard in district court in Brighton. Under C.R.S. 14-10-107, the respondent generally must be personally served unless they join the petition or waive service, and the automatic temporary injunction takes effect on service. We confirm identity and record the time. Counsel can review parenting-time investigations in Colorado and hidden assets in a divorce.
Adams County's large rental market produces many FED cases in county court. Most residential nonpayment notices give 10 days under C.R.S. 13-40-104, and the FED summons must be served or posted at least seven days before the appearance. The Adams County Sheriff executes writs of restitution and posts its fee, and Delator never performs removals or lockouts. Small claims papers need 15 days before trial, and rental applicant checks help landlords.

- FED summonses for Adams County Court
- Small claims notices 15 days before trial
- Witness subpoenas for Brighton hearings

Adams County Returns That Answer a Service Challenge
Each Adams County return states that the server is 18 or older and not a party, lists the documents, and gives the county, date, time, place and manner of service on the pattern of the JDF 98 Affidavit of Service. Because so many cities here cross county lines, the county of service is always named. A full attempt log stands behind it. Serves may be carried out by vetted servers Delator contracts with, all working to one written standard.
If a defendant later contests service, counsel can show whether delivery was personal, on a family member 18 or older at the home, on a listed workplace contact such as a supervisor or human resources representative, or after a refusal under C.R.C.P. 4(k). When the dispute becomes a factual contest, investigative consulting for litigation and Colorado insurance fraud investigations can develop the record.
06Colorado rules
Colorado Service Rules for Adams County Cases
No license is required to serve process in Colorado. Under C.R.C.P. 4(d), any person 18 or older who is not a party may generally serve. C.R.C.P. 4(e)(1) permits personal delivery, abode service on a member of the person's family 18 or older, workplace service on a supervisor, secretary, administrative assistant, bookkeeper, human resources representative or managing agent, and service on an authorized agent. The Colorado service of process overview covers entity and government defendants.
C.R.C.P. 4(m) generally requires service within 63 days after filing. Defendants generally answer within 21 days, or 35 if served outside Colorado or by publication. A county is generally served through its clerk, chief deputy or a county commissioner, and a city through its mayor, city manager or clerk. These are summaries, not legal advice, and the Colorado serving guide and legal limits on Colorado investigators add detail.

The Sheriff's Walk-In Desk, Broomfield and the Airport Line
The Adams County Sheriff's Office takes civil papers in person at its Civil Division inside the Justice Center in Brighton, uses a separate Brighton address for mail only, requires prepayment, and keeps weekday business hours. Its writ of restitution fee is set at up to $200 plus mileage from January 1, 2026. Many filers use the sheriff successfully. A private server adds flexible hours, rush tiers and an investigator when the address is wrong.
Two boundary questions come up often. The City and County of Broomfield shares the 17th Judicial District but files in its own combined court on Descombes Drive, so a Broomfield address is not an Adams County serve. Denver International Airport, though surrounded by Adams County land, sits within the City and County of Denver, so airport-area papers can belong to Denver. Those go through Denver process service, and Broomfield investigators cover Broomfield.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a process server in Adams County need a license?
No. Colorado does not license process servers, and C.R.C.P. 4(d) generally allows any person 18 or older who is not a party to serve a summons. Because no agency screens servers, check how attempts and the county of service are documented. Our vetting guide for Colorado providers lists useful questions.
How much does it cost to serve papers in Adams County?
Routine service in Adams County has a published starting rate of $125. Urgent starts at $188, Rush at $250 and Same Day Rush at $375. Denver, Arapahoe, Jefferson and Broomfield also start at $125 for Routine. The final price depends on the address, deadline and number of people, and it is confirmed in writing first.
Where is the Adams County courthouse?
Adams County District and County Court cases are filed at the Adams County Justice Center, 1100 Judicial Center Drive, Brighton, the county seat. The City and County of Broomfield shares the 17th Judicial District but files at its own combined court at 17 Descombes Drive. Our affidavit names the issuing court.
Is Westminster in Adams County or Jefferson County?
Both. Westminster crosses the Adams and Jefferson county line, as do Arvada, Aurora (with Arapahoe and Douglas), Brighton (with Weld) and Bennett (with Arapahoe). We confirm the county of each address before quoting, because it determines the court, the sheriff and sometimes the rate for the serve, and it is stated on the affidavit.
Can papers be left with a family member in Thornton?
Generally yes, if the person is a member of the defendant's family, is 18 or older, and the home is the defendant's usual place of abode, under C.R.C.P. 4(e)(1). An unrelated roommate generally does not qualify. Eviction demands differ: they may generally be left with a family member above age 15 at the premises.
Can you serve someone at a warehouse or plant in Commerce City?
We can attempt service where the employer allows a visitor to reach the person, but we do not enter restricted or secured areas. C.R.C.P. 4(e)(1) also generally permits leaving papers at the usual workplace with a supervisor or human resources representative. Every attempt and any refusal is logged for counsel.
Is Denver International Airport in Adams County?
No. Denver International Airport lies within the City and County of Denver, even though Adams County land surrounds it. Papers for someone served at the airport are therefore a Denver serve, and cases may be filed in Denver depending on venue. We confirm the jurisdiction of every address, and Colorado missing person guidance helps when a traveler cannot be found.
What if an Adams County defendant cannot be served?
Counsel can move for substituted service under C.R.C.P. 4(f), supported by the server's affidavit describing the attempts and why they failed. The court must find due diligence and that the method is reasonably calculated to give notice. Our attempt log supports that motion. Judgment debtor locates help collection counsel, and asset searches show what can be collected.
Do you serve in Bennett, Strasburg and Watkins?
Yes. Bennett and the Strasburg and Watkins areas on the eastern plains are served at the Adams County Routine starting rate of $125 when the address is in Adams County. These communities sit near the Arapahoe County line, which also starts at $125, so we confirm the county of each address before scheduling the serve.

It coordinates service across Adams County through vetted servers held to one documentation standard, and it works to Tennessee's licensing standard in every state.
