Quick answer
How do I hire a process server in Georgetown?
Send the filed papers, the Scott County address and, if you know it, the defendant's work shift. We check the clerk's method of issuing the summons and whether a private server may deliver it, and the tier and price follow in writing. Routine service starts at $125, and the Scott County service page covers Sadieville and Stamping Ground too.
01Local service landscape
A County Seat on I-75 Just North of Lexington
Georgetown is the Scott County seat, with about 37,000 residents in the 2020 census, and it sits on I-75 just north of Lexington-Fayette. Scott County has only three incorporated cities, Georgetown, Sadieville and Stamping Ground, so much of the county outside town is farmland reached by two-lane roads. Every civil filing returns to the Justice Center on North Hamilton Street. Our Scott County countywide page covers the outlying towns.
Because Georgetown and Lexington are so close, many defendants live in one and work in the other, and a summons issued in Fayette may need to be delivered in Scott. CR 4.01(2) allows a summons to issue for service in any county, which keeps that simple. We sequence Georgetown attempts with Lexington routes when it saves time, and Lexington process service runs on the same system. The Kentucky county rate map shows both counties at the same starting rate.

02Attorneys and law firms
Working With Scott County Lawyers and Lexington Firms
Scott County's courts sit in the 14th Judicial Circuit with Bourbon and Woodford counties, and many of the lawyers who file there practice in Lexington or Frankfort. They send us collection actions, contract and injury suits, family law petitions and deposition subpoenas, and out-of-state firms often need a Georgetown employer or employee served. Our Kentucky service program for attorneys keeps the quote, notes and return in a single file.
Before scheduling, we check the papers against the court. A Scott Circuit summons follows CR 4, while a federal case from Scott County is filed in the Eastern District's Lexington division and served under Federal Rule 4. A subpoena from another state must be reissued by the Scott circuit clerk under KRS 421.360. If the defendant has moved to Woodford or Bourbon County, we flag it before the first visit, and Frankfort process service covers the capital next door.
03Evasive and hard-to-serve
Plant Shifts, Subdivisions and Closed Doors
Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky in Georgetown employs about 10,000 people and builds the Camry, RAV4 and Lexus ES, according to published figures. A defendant on a plant shift may leave before dawn or return near midnight, and a mid-afternoon knock will rarely find them. We ask counsel for any known schedule, then time attempts to it. Serving at a large employer raises access and workplace questions that counsel should decide, as our page on hard-to-serve defendants in Kentucky explains.
In Georgetown subdivisions, look-alike streets and house numbers that are hard to read from the road can trip up a first visit, so we confirm the location before the trip. When a defendant refuses to come to the door, we vary the hours and days, including Sundays, which KRS 454.135 does not exempt. Our log captures the clock time and the server's observations for each try. The Kentucky guide to avoided service outlines counsel's options, and same day rush service is available for short deadlines.
04Family law, landlords and subpoenas
Scott Family Court, Rental Notices, Small Claims and Witnesses
Dissolution and custody cases in Georgetown are filed in Scott Circuit Court, whose kycourts page lists a Family Court. A respondent can sign a waiver of service and entry of appearance, or be served personally, by the clerk's certified mail or, where the grounds exist, by warning order. When personal delivery is the choice, we keep it discreet. The Kentucky dissolution papers service page explains how each route works.
Georgetown appears on a 2015 list of cities that adopted URLTA, which sets a 7-day written notice for nonpayment under KRS 383.660 and at least 14 days for other material breaches; that list is dated, so confirm current status. The forcible detainer notice is directed to the sheriff or a constable under KRS 383.210, and we do not serve it. Small claims of $2,500 or less usually go by certified mail or the sheriff, as the Kentucky small claims page notes, and witnesses are handled through CR 45.03 subpoena service.
- Scott Family Court papers
- URLTA pre-suit notices, status to be confirmed
- Small claims only where private delivery is accepted
- Witness subpoenas statewide

The Record Behind a Georgetown Return
Under CR 4.03, the person who serves files proof promptly and within the defendant's response time. A Scott summons transferred for private delivery is proved by the server's endorsed return; if a court appoints someone under KRS 454.145, that person verifies the return by affidavit. Our Georgetown returns state the date, time, address and manner of delivery, and the Kentucky guide for serving papers shows where the return is filed.
Every return is supported by a log of all attempts, including the ones that failed: the hour, what was observed at the address and who answered. That log is the evidence counsel uses if service is disputed. Outside Tennessee, Delator may assign the serve to a vetted server it contracts with, and that server keeps the same written documentation standard. Our Kentucky process serving hub explains how the statewide network is organized.
06Kentucky rules
Kentucky's Service Rules for a Scott County Case
CR 4.01 has the Scott clerk issue the summons when the complaint is filed and then, at the plaintiff's direction, mail it by certified mail, transfer it to an authorized person other than a mail carrier, or return it to the plaintiff to arrange service. KRS 454.140 points process to the sheriff unless a party asks otherwise, and KRS 454.145 permits a court appointment for a particular paper. The Kentucky guide on who may serve process notes there is no private server license.
We confirm with counsel and the Scott clerk how the summons will issue and whether private delivery is accepted before accepting a Georgetown job, and we route papers to the sheriff where only an officer may serve. CR 4.04(2) calls for delivery to the defendant personally, an offer on refusal or delivery to an authorized agent, and the answer is generally due 20 days later under CR 12.01. This is a summary, not legal advice; read more about Delator Group.

Suppliers, Contractors and Nonresident Defendants
A large manufacturing presence draws suppliers, contractors and service companies from other states, and disputes with them often land in Scott County. If the company is registered to do business in Kentucky, its registered agent is served under KRS 14A.4-040, and the Secretary of State does not serve it. For a true nonresident, KRS 454.210 lets the clerk send two copies of the summons and complaint to the Secretary of State, who mails them within 7 days. A process server in Georgetown should sort out which category applies before any attempt.
Service through the Secretary of State is deemed made when that office makes its return, and its fee is $10 per defendant. Where a nonresident does business through a Kentucky office, CR 4.04(9) also allows service on the person in charge of that office in suits tied to its business. We confirm names and titles before visiting any Georgetown business location. Our registered agent and business service page and Winchester process service cover nearby employers.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Who can serve a summons in Georgetown?
That depends on how the Scott clerk issues it under CR 4.01: by certified mail, by transfer to an authorized person other than a mail carrier, or by return to the plaintiff to arrange service. KRS 454.140 sends process to the sheriff by default. Subpoenas are simpler, since any person over 18 may serve one under CR 45.03. We confirm the route first.
How much does a process server in Georgetown cost?
Scott County's published Routine starting rate is $125, which makes Urgent $188, Rush $250 and Same Day Rush $375. The final price depends on the address, the document and the deadline, and we send it to you in writing before any server is assigned. Shift-timed attempts are planned at the quote stage, not billed as a surprise later.
Can papers be served at the Toyota plant?
Workplace service at a large plant depends on site access and on whether the defendant can be reached there without disrupting work. Many plant employees are easier to serve at home when attempts follow their shift. Your attorney decides whether a workplace attempt is appropriate, and we document any visit, at home or at work, in the same way.
Can a summons be left with a family member in Georgetown?
No. CR 4.04(2) calls for delivery to the defendant personally, an offer if the person refuses, or delivery to an agent authorized by appointment or by law. Leaving the papers with a spouse or relative is not an option for a Kentucky summons. Only an officer serving a forcible detainer notice may leave it with a family member over 16.
Do you serve Georgetown eviction notices?
No. Kentucky directs the forcible detainer warrant and the AOC-215 notice to the sheriff or any constable, and the warrant of restitution after judgment goes to those officers too. We can deliver a landlord's pre-suit written notice and serve papers in a separate civil suit. The step-by-step Kentucky eviction guide covers each stage.
How long does a Georgetown defendant have to answer?
The general deadline is 20 days after service, under CR 12.01, and CR 4.02 requires the summons to state it. Kentucky's AOC-105 summons tells the defendant to answer within 20 days following the day of delivery. A defendant summoned by warning order is deemed summoned on the 30th day after its entry. Counsel should confirm the exact date.
What happens if a Georgetown defendant cannot be served?
Every failed visit goes into a dated report to you. If the defendant has left the county to avoid service, is hiding or cannot be located by name or residence, CR 4.05 allows a warning order on an affidavit. The clerk then appoints a warning order attorney, who must report within 50 days. See our explanation of warning order attorneys.
How is an out-of-state supplier served in Scott County?
If it is registered to do business in Kentucky, through its registered agent. If it is a true nonresident, the clerk can send the papers to the Secretary of State under KRS 454.210, who mails them by certified mail within 7 days; service is deemed made on the Secretary's return. Our guide for out-of-state papers covers related situations.
Do Georgetown witnesses from other counties get mileage?
KRS 421.015 allows a witness who lives in a county other than the one they are subpoenaed to the same mileage that state employees receive under KRS 44.060. No Kentucky statute setting a daily attendance fee turned up in our review. A Fayette or Woodford witness called to Georgetown is a typical case, and the return notes what was tendered.
Do you serve federal papers from Scott County cases?
Yes. Scott County is in the Eastern District of Kentucky's Lexington division, whose clerk's office is at 101 Barr St., Lexington. Those summonses are governed by Federal Rule 4 and the joint local rules, and our proof is formatted for the federal record. Reach DFS for Kentucky service with the case number and deadline to start.
