Quick answer
How do I hire a process server in Boulder?
Send the filed papers, the address and any detail about the person's schedule, such as a lease end date or work hours. We confirm the Boulder County address, the tier and the price in writing, then assign a server who logs every attempt. Routine service in Boulder County has a published starting rate of $135, and Colorado's county rate map shows neighbors.
01Local service landscape
Serving Papers in a University City Against the Mountains
Boulder had an estimated 105,700 residents in 2025, slightly fewer than in 2020, and Boulder County about 328,600. The University of Colorado shapes the city's rental market, with dense student housing on University Hill and in Martin Acres, while North Boulder, Table Mesa and Gunbarrel mix single-family homes and condos. Longmont, the county's other large city, has its own courthouse. Addresses on the Weld side of Longmont or Erie go through Weld County service from Greeley.
West of the city, Boulder Canyon and the foothill roads lead to Nederland, Jamestown and scattered mountain homes where winter weather and narrow drives slow access. Lyons and the foothill roads to the north need the same planning. Servers plan those trips around daylight and conditions, and our Boulder investigators can confirm whether a defendant still lives at a mountain address before the drive.

02Attorneys and law firms
Service for Boulder County Firms and Counsel From Elsewhere
Boulder County cases are filed at the combined court on 6th Street or the county court location on Kimbark Street in Longmont. Local firms send us contract and technology disputes, landlord-tenant matters, injury claims, employment cases and probate notices. Through Delator's attorney services in Colorado, one coordinator owns the written quote, the attempts and the signed return, and counsel can ask for the attempt log at any stage.
Out-of-state firms regularly need a Boulder founder, researcher or former employee served, often on short notice. We review the papers first, because a federal summons, a district court summons and a deposition subpoena follow different rules, and we flag a registered agent that may have changed. For trial preparation, witness background research in Colorado and executive background checks can run alongside the serve.
03Evasive and hard-to-serve
Semester Moves, Remote Workers and Defendants Who Avoid Contact
Boulder's population turns over quickly. Students sublet and move at the end of each semester, many professionals work remotely with unpredictable hours, and some residents split time between Boulder and another home. A server may find a house empty for weeks. We schedule attempts at varied hours, log each visit with its result, and report when neighbors or roommates say the person has left town, so counsel can choose the next step.
Some defendants deliberately avoid the door. When that happens, a Delator investigator can take over through locating defendants who dodge service, using public records and lawful observation. The attempt log supports a motion for court-ordered substituted service under C.R.C.P. 4(f). Former students who left Colorado can often be found with Colorado skip tracing and then served where they now live, and missing person locates help families.
04Family law, evictions and subpoenas
Family Law, Eviction, Small Claims and Subpoena Service in Boulder
Boulder County dissolution and allocation-of-parental-responsibilities cases are generally heard in district court. Colorado sets no presumption of equal parenting time and decides by the child's best interests under C.R.S. 14-10-124. The respondent generally must be personally served unless they join or waive, and service triggers the automatic temporary injunction. Identity is confirmed first, and the minute of delivery goes in the log. Counsel can review how investigators support Colorado custody cases and asset tracing in a Colorado divorce.
Boulder landlords file FED cases in county court in Boulder or Longmont. Most residential nonpayment notices give 10 days under C.R.S. 13-40-104, and the FED summons must be served or posted at least seven days before the appearance date. Only the sheriff executes a writ of restitution, and Delator never performs lockouts. Small claims papers need 15 days before trial, and screening rental applicants helps prevent disputes.

Boulder Returns Prepared for Scrutiny
Our Boulder returns state that the server is 18 or older and not a party, identify the documents, and give the date, time, place and manner of service, following the Judicial Branch's JDF 98 Affidavit of Service. Each rests on a field log of every attempt with the address, the hour and what the server observed. Serves may be carried out by vetted servers Delator contracts with, all working to one written standard and a price confirmed first.
If a defendant contests service, counsel can show whether the papers went to the person, to a family member 18 or older at the home, to a listed workplace contact, or were left after a refusal under C.R.C.P. 4(k). Colorado allows proof by sworn or unsworn declaration under C.R.C.P. 4(h). When a dispute grows into a factual contest, investigative consulting and corporate espionage investigations are available to counsel.
06Colorado rules
The Colorado Service Rules That Apply in Boulder
Colorado does not license process servers. Under C.R.C.P. 4(d), anyone 18 or older who is not a party may generally serve. The methods in C.R.C.P. 4(e)(1) are personal delivery, abode service on a family member 18 or older, workplace service on a supervisor, secretary, administrative assistant, bookkeeper, human resources representative or managing agent, and delivery to an authorized agent. The Colorado process serving hub explains the remaining categories.
Under C.R.C.P. 4(m), the clock for service generally runs 63 days from filing. The answer is generally due in 21 days, extended to 35 for service outside Colorado or by publication. Subpoenas need at least 48 hours for trial testimony, seven days for depositions and 14 days for document production under C.R.C.P. 45. These are summaries, not legal advice, and the Colorado legal-papers guide and Colorado recording law add context.

Protection Orders and the Boulder County Sheriff
The Boulder County Sheriff's Office civil section, at headquarters on Flatiron Parkway, accepts process from every Colorado county, other states and the federal government. Its deputies serve during weekday working hours, and patrol deputies serve domestic violence protection orders after hours. That is an important public safety function. Under C.R.S. 13-14-104.5, a temporary civil protection order must be served on the respondent following C.R.C.P. 304 or C.R.C.P. 4.
Courts and sheriffs often handle protection-order service, and we serve those papers only when the court and the client direct. Petitioners who are victims of domestic abuse, stalking or sexual assault generally cannot be charged for service by a state or public agency under C.R.S. 13-14-109, so the sheriff may be the better route for them. People gathering evidence before filing can ask about stalking investigations and cyberbullying investigations.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a process server in Boulder need a license?
No. No state license exists for process servers in Colorado. Under C.R.C.P. 4(d), any person 18 or older who is not a party can generally serve a summons. Because no state agency screens servers, the quality of the attempt log and affidavit matters. Our guide to vetting Colorado investigators and servers lists the questions to ask.
How much does it cost to serve papers in Boulder?
Routine service in Boulder County has a published starting rate of $135. Urgent starts at $202, Rush at $270 and Same Day Rush at $405. Broomfield, Adams and Weld counties start at $125. What you finally pay turns on the address, the deadline and how many people need service, and it is confirmed in writing first.
Can I serve a CU Boulder student on campus?
A server can attempt personal service where building and campus rules allow a visitor to reach the person, but we do not enter restricted housing or classrooms. The residence off campus is often the better option. Abode service generally requires a family member 18 or older, so a roommate usually does not qualify. Every attempt is logged.
Which Boulder County courthouse handles my case?
Check the caption. Boulder County cases are filed at the Combined Court, 1777 6th Street in Boulder, or the county court location at 1035 Kimbark Street in Longmont. Federal cases go to the Arraj Courthouse clerk in Denver. Our affidavit names the issuing court so it reaches the right clerk.
Will you serve a protection order in Boulder?
Courts and sheriffs often handle protection-order service, and we serve those papers only when the court and the client direct. C.R.S. 13-14-104.5 requires temporary protection orders to be served following C.R.C.P. 304 or 4. Petitioners who are victims of domestic abuse or stalking generally cannot be charged for service by a public agency, so the sheriff may be preferable.
Can papers be left with family at a Boulder home?
Usually, provided the person is a family member of the defendant, at least 18, and the home is the defendant's usual place of abode under C.R.C.P. 4(e)(1). An unrelated roommate or a house sitter generally does not qualify. Our server records the recipient's name or description and relationship to the defendant.
What if the Boulder defendant cannot be found?
The next step is usually a C.R.C.P. 4(f) request for substituted service, supported by the server's affidavit on what was tried and why it failed. Publication is limited to property and status cases. Our attempt log is built to support that motion, and Colorado guidance on finding a missing person explains lawful search steps.
Do you serve in Longmont, Lafayette and Nederland?
Yes. Longmont, Lafayette, Louisville, Superior, Lyons, Niwot, Nederland and Jamestown are in Boulder County, where Routine starts at $135. Part of Longmont and Erie lies in Weld County, which starts at $125, so we confirm the county of each address before quoting. Mountain trips may take longer in winter, and our Longmont investigators cover the east county.
How do you serve a Boulder technology company?
Usually through the registered agent on file with the Colorado Secretary of State, or an officer, manager or general partner. If the agent cannot be served with reasonable diligence, C.R.S. 7-90-704 generally allows registered or certified mail to the principal address. The Secretary of State is not a substitute agent. M&A due diligence is a separate service.
Is Delator Group a Boulder company?
No. Delator Group, a licensed Tennessee private investigation firm, is headquartered in Nashville and keeps no office in Boulder or elsewhere in Colorado. It coordinates service in Boulder County through vetted servers who follow one documentation standard, and it holds itself to Tennessee's licensing standard in every state. Its investigative work in the state is described on the Colorado investigation overview page.
