Routine starts at a published $130, and our Elizabethtown service page covers the city.
01Local service landscape
Six Cities, Two Parkways and a Large Army Post
Hardin County has about 113,000 residents and six incorporated cities. Elizabethtown is the county seat and commercial center, Radcliff and Vine Grove sit to the north against Fort Knox, West Point is at the Ohio River on the county's northern tip, and Sonora and Upton lie south along I-65. Fort Knox covers roughly 109,000 acres across Bullitt, Hardin and Meade counties (secondary), so many northern addresses wrap around the post. Our Radcliff process service page covers that community.
Elizabethtown is a crossroads: I-65 runs north to Louisville and south to Bowling Green, the Blue Grass Parkway begins here and heads east past Bardstown, and the Western Kentucky Parkway begins here and runs west. Our servers plan attempts by corridor so a Sonora address and a West Point address do not land in the same window. See Elizabethtown city coverage for in-town logistics and our Kentucky service hub for the rest of the state.
- Elizabethtown and the Ring Road commercial area
- Radcliff and Vine Grove beside Fort Knox
- West Point at the Ohio River
- Sonora and Upton along I-65 to the south

Hardin County Practice and Louisville Federal Filings
Every Hardin case is filed with the Circuit Court Clerk at the Justice Center on East Dixie Avenue in Elizabethtown, and Hardin is a single-county circuit, so the 9th Circuit means Hardin County. Federal matters from Hardin go to the Western District's Louisville division at the Gene Snyder Courthouse. We read the caption first and prepare the proof for the court that issued the papers. Our DFS page for Kentucky litigators explains the information that keeps a Hardin file moving.
Because of the military community, many Hardin cases involve parties who have moved in from other states or are about to move away. Papers from another state's court served in Hardin follow the issuing court's rule, and we match the Kentucky delivery and affidavit to it, as our other-state papers page explains. Kentucky papers headed to a party who has already left the state follow CR 4.04(8), where the server's affidavit must state that the server personally knew the person served.
03Evasive and hard-to-serve
Base Access, Transfers and Long Rural Drives
Service on or near a military installation depends on the base's own access rules, and we do not assume a server can enter Fort Knox to deliver papers. In practice, we focus on off-post home addresses in Radcliff, Vine Grove and Elizabethtown, plan around duty schedules where counsel knows them, and log every attempt. If a defendant is about to transfer, timing matters, so tell us any known reporting date when you send the file.
In the rural south and east of the county, homes sit far apart and repeated visits are noticed. When a defendant plainly avoids service, the log records dates, times and observations, which is what counsel review before choosing another route. Kentucky allows a warning order under CR 4.05 in cases of concealment or absence. Our guide for Kentucky parties who dodge service and the hard-to-serve defendant page explain what a diligence record should show.
- Off-post addresses in Radcliff and Vine Grove
- Base access governed by installation rules
- Transfers and reporting dates
- Rural roads south toward Sonora and Upton
04Family, landlord, claim and witness papers
Military Divorces, Rentals, Small Claims and Subpoenas
Hardin Family Court petitions are served like other Kentucky civil summonses: personally, by the clerk's certified mail, or through a respondent's waiver of service and entry of appearance. A waiver is often practical when one spouse is relocating. When minor children are involved, a 60-day period counted from service generally runs before proof on the merits, so prompt delivery matters. Our Kentucky divorce service walkthrough covers the choices.
Rental housing is common near Fort Knox. Whether local notice periods follow Kentucky's landlord and tenant act depends on local adoption, which counsel should confirm. The forcible detainer notice itself goes to the sheriff or a constable under KRS 383.210, so DFS does not serve it. We do serve separate rent and damage suits, and our Kentucky small claims notes and witness subpoena delivery pages explain the other common papers.
05Documentation and challenges
Proof of Service and the Servicemember Question
Before a default judgment, the federal Servicemembers Civil Relief Act requires the plaintiff to file an affidavit stating whether the defendant is in military service. If the defendant appears to be serving, no judgment may be entered until the court appoints an attorney for them, and a stay of at least 90 days may follow. Our proof of service does not answer that question, but our notes can help counsel, and the faster service tiers help when timing is tight.
On the Kentucky side, CR 4.03 asks for proof filed promptly and within the defendant's response time, which is generally 20 days after service under CR 12.01. Our signed proof names the recipient and states the date, place and manner. The how-to guide for Kentucky service explains accepted methods, and Delator Group's leadership background explains why the firm values a precise written record.
06Kentucky service rules
What Kentucky Allows When a Summons Issues
When a complaint is filed, CR 4.01 has the clerk issue the summons and then, at the plaintiff's direction, send it by certified or registered mail, transfer it to a person other than a mail carrier who is authorized to deliver it, or return it to the plaintiff to arrange service. KRS 454.140 sends process to the sheriff by default, and a court may appoint a person for a particular paper under KRS 454.145. Our guide to Kentucky process servers explains each option.
No Kentucky statute licenses private process servers, and DFS does not claim any Kentucky license, appointment or listing. For each Hardin file, we confirm with the clerk or court how the summons will issue and whether private delivery or a special appointment is needed before we accept it. Where only an officer may serve, the papers go to the Sheriff and we explain why. You can message DFS about an Elizabethtown case before filing.
07Local angle
On the Edge of the Time Zone Line
Federal regulations draw the Eastern-Central boundary along the west lines of Meade and Hardin counties and the south line of Hardin, so Hardin County is on Eastern Time while Grayson and other counties to the west and south are on Central Time. A defendant who lives in Hardin but works across that line may keep two clocks. We confirm the time zone on every quote and log each attempt in local time to avoid confusion.
Hardin cases also reach north and east. Bullitt County shares Fort Knox and the I-65 corridor toward Louisville, and Bardstown sits along the Blue Grass Parkway in Nelson County. When a co-defendant lives across a line, we coordinate service under one quote through Bullitt County service or Bardstown process serving, and the Kentucky pricing map shows each county's published Routine tier before you decide.
- Courts and clerk: 120 E. Dixie Ave., Elizabethtown
- 9th Circuit: Hardin County only
- Federal court: Louisville division
- Eastern Time, bordering Central counties

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Where are Hardin County cases filed?
At the Hardin County Justice Center, 120 East Dixie Avenue in Elizabethtown, where the Circuit, Family and District courts sit and the Circuit Court Clerk keeps the records. Radcliff and Vine Grove residents use the same courthouse. Our Kentucky process serving hub describes how county courts are organized across the state.
What does Hardin County service cost?
The published Routine starting rate in Hardin County is $130. Urgent costs one and a half times that, Rush twice that and Same Day Rush three times that. The price for your file depends on the address, the number of people and your deadline, and we confirm it in writing before any attempt.
Can you serve someone who lives on Fort Knox?
Access to a military installation depends on the base's rules, and we do not promise entry. We usually serve off-post addresses or plan around a defendant's off-duty hours with counsel. If a defendant may be on active duty, counsel should also consider the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act before seeking a default judgment.
What is the SCRA affidavit?
Before a default judgment, federal law requires the plaintiff to file an affidavit stating whether the defendant is in military service, or that this cannot be determined. If the defendant appears to be serving, the court must appoint an attorney before any judgment. That obligation belongs to the plaintiff and counsel; our proof of service documents the delivery itself.
Do you serve forcible detainer notices in Radcliff?
No. Those notices are directed to the sheriff or a constable under KRS 383.210, who must give at least three days' notice of the trial. Restitution warrants after judgment also stay with those officers. We serve related civil suits and hearing subpoenas, and our eviction steps in Kentucky guide explains the sequence.
What if a defendant moved away after a transfer?
If the defendant is now outside Kentucky, CR 4.04(8) allows service by the clerk's certified mail or personal delivery by any person over 18, with an affidavit that the server personally knew the person served. That kind of service does not support a personal judgment without an appearance. Counsel can weigh this against a warning order attorney.
How long does a Hardin defendant have to answer?
Generally 20 days after service of the summons, under CR 12.01, and the summons itself states that period. Proof of service should be filed within the same window under CR 4.03, so we send the signed return quickly. Counsel with a near hearing can choose a faster tier in writing before work begins.
Is Hardin County on Eastern or Central Time?
Hardin County is on Eastern Time. The federal time-zone boundary follows Hardin's west and south lines, so neighboring Grayson County and counties farther west and south are on Central Time. We note the time zone on every quote and record each attempt in local time so the record is never unclear.
How do you serve a business in Hardin County?
Usually through the registered agent on file with the Kentucky Secretary of State under KRS 14A.4-040, or through an officer, managing agent or the chief agent in the county under CR 4.04(5). We check the agent listed on the Secretary of State's records before sending a server out, since agents change more often than counsel expect. Our Kentucky entity service page explains the alternatives.
Can you serve a witness coming from Meade or Larue County?
Yes. CR 45.03 allows any person over 18 to serve a subpoena anywhere in Kentucky by delivering or offering a copy. A witness who lives outside Hardin is allowed mileage at the state-employee rate under KRS 421.015, which counsel handles. Our subpoena service page for Kentucky courts explains the proof.
