Quick answer

How do I hire a process server in Augusta?

Send the filed papers and the service address. We confirm whether the address is in Richmond or Columbia County, check what the issuing court allows and send the tier and price in writing. Routine Richmond County service has a published starting rate of $150, and the Richmond County service page covers the rest of the county.

01Local service landscape

Serving Papers in Consolidated Augusta-Richmond County

Augusta and Richmond County operate as one consolidated government, and the city counted 202,081 residents in 2020. Consolidation did not swallow everyone, though: Blythe and Hephzibah remain independent municipalities inside the county. For service purposes that rarely changes the court, but it does change street naming, gate access and which local office a resident thinks of as home, so we confirm each address before dispatch, the same way we handle Macon-Bibb service in that consolidated county. Our countywide Richmond service notes list the rural roads south of the city.

I-20 runs west from the Savannah River toward Atlanta and anchors most routes, while the older street grid downtown and the residential hills of Summerville need slower, block-by-block attempts. Many Augusta defendants work in health care, at the river industrial plants or on post, so shift schedules shape when a server is likely to find someone home. The Georgia county rate map shows how Richmond compares with Burke, McDuffie and Jefferson.

02Attorneys and law firms

Service for Augusta Firms and Counsel Across the River

Augusta law firms work on both sides of the Savannah River, and many handle cases in Aiken and Edgefield counties as well as Richmond and Columbia. When a Georgia filing names a defendant who lives in North Augusta, or a South Carolina case needs an Augusta witness, the paperwork has to satisfy two sets of rules. Our South Carolina process servers and the Georgia team work from one quote and one contact.

We review the papers before we schedule. A Richmond County superior court summons, a state court complaint and a federal summons from the Southern District each have their own return and filing steps, and we flag problems early, such as a defendant who has moved to Evans or an LLC that changed its registered agent. Firms that send recurring work can read about our attorney process serving program and its reporting, or learn about Delator Group and its Nashville headquarters.

03Evasive and hard-to-serve

Shift Schedules, Rural Roads and Defendants Who Avoid the Door

Hard-to-serve cases around Augusta usually come down to timing or access. A nurse on nights, a plant worker on rotating shifts or a contractor who leaves before dawn is seldom home at midday, and the long rural roads south toward Hephzibah and Blythe make each wasted trip costly. We plan attempts at different hours and days and record each one, so the next attempt is informed by the last. Read how we approach defendants who are difficult to serve.

Some defendants avoid service on purpose, by staying with relatives, refusing to answer or moving across the river. We keep the log factual and complete: the hour, what was seen, who answered and what they said. Our plain-language avoidance guide shows how that record is used. If service stalls, counsel can use that diligence record when asking the court about another method, and the publication service guide explains when Georgia courts may allow it.

04Family law, evictions and subpoenas

Divorce, Dispossessory, Magistrate and Subpoena Papers in Augusta

Divorce and custody cases in Richmond County Superior Court are generally served under O.C.G.A. 9-11-4, the same as other civil cases, and Georgia's state self-help forms also describe acknowledgment of service and sheriff service. We serve family papers calmly, confirm identity first and avoid a scene at a workplace or on post. The Georgia divorce service guide compares the routes in plain terms.

Landlords should know that the July 1, 2025 amendment to O.C.G.A. 44-7-51 added approved process servers to the people who may serve a dispossessory summons, yet the statute does not say who approves them. Before taking an Augusta dispossessory, we confirm with the magistrate court whether it accepts a private server, and we never carry out writs of possession. Witness subpoenas are covered on our subpoena service page for Georgia, and dispossessory screening is detailed on the Georgia eviction papers page.

  • Divorce and custody summonses
  • Dispossessory papers, only after the court confirms
  • Statements of claim up to $15,000
  • Subpoenas with any fee tender recorded

05Documentation

How an Augusta Affidavit Holds Up When Service Is Questioned

A private server in Georgia proves service by affidavit, and O.C.G.A. 9-11-4(h) requires it to state the date, place and manner of service. Proof is to be filed within five business days, and if it is late, the defendant's answer clock does not start until it is filed. We prepare each Augusta affidavit with those points in mind and attach the attempt history on request. The Georgia guide to serving legal papers shows where the affidavit fits in a case.

When a defendant later claims they were never served, the record does the work: the address, the hour, the description of the person who accepted and any statements made. Serves outside Tennessee may be carried out by vetted servers Delator contracts with, held to one written standard. If the court allows process or proof to be amended under 9-11-4(i), our notes give counsel the detail to do it. Time-sensitive filings can use rush and same day service.

06Georgia rules

Georgia's Rules on Who Serves Process in Richmond County

Georgia's Civil Practice Act is narrower than many states about who may serve. O.C.G.A. 9-11-4(c) generally lists the sheriff and deputies, marshals, citizens specially appointed by the court, non-party adults appointed by the court or as permanent process servers, and certified process servers under 9-11-4.1. A certified server must file a yearly notice of intent with each county's sheriff, and a sheriff may decline to accept certified servers. The guide on who may serve process in Georgia explains each category.

For each Augusta job, we assign a server who meets the requirements of that court and county, and we confirm that in writing before accepting the serve. If a court will not accept a private server for a paper type, we tell you and route it through the sheriff. A served defendant generally has 30 days to answer a superior or state court summons. These summaries are not legal advice; your attorney can confirm what applies, and our Georgia magistrate and small claims service page adds detail for lower-court filings.

07Augusta angle

Fort Gordon, Servicemembers and Papers That Touch the Post

Fort Gordon sits southwest of the city, and its name came back in June 2025 after a period as Fort Eisenhower; it now honors Master Sgt. Gary Gordon. Many Augusta defendants, witnesses and spouses are connected to the post. Service on a military installation depends on base access rules, so we coordinate with counsel before any attempt on base and do not assume entry either way. Off-post homes in Grovetown and Hephzibah, or across Columbia County in Evans and Martinez, are often the practical address.

Military status also matters after service. Before any default judgment, federal law at 50 U.S.C. 3931 requires the plaintiff to swear to whether the defendant is on active duty, and a court can respond by naming an attorney for that person or pausing the case. Counsel usually checks status through the DMDC database the Justice Department points to. We note anything observed at the door, such as a statement about deployment, and counsel takes it from there with help from the Georgia process serving hub.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Augusta the same as Richmond County for service?

Mostly. Augusta and Richmond County share a consolidated government and one set of county courts, so most Augusta papers are filed and returned in Richmond County. Blythe and Hephzibah are separate municipalities inside the county, and Evans, Martinez and Grovetown are in Columbia County, which has its own superior court in Evans.

How much does a process server in Augusta cost?

Routine service in Richmond County has a published starting rate of $150. Urgent starts at $225, Rush at $300 and Same Day Rush at $450, which are 1.5, 2 and 3 times Routine. Columbia County starts at the same $150, and you receive the confirmed price in writing before a server goes out.

Can you serve someone on Fort Gordon?

Service on a military installation depends on base access rules, so we coordinate with counsel before any attempt on post and make no assumption about entry. Many servicemembers and families live off post in Grovetown, Hephzibah or Augusta, and those addresses are usually the practical starting point. The hard-to-serve defendants page covers related planning.

Do Augusta divorce papers have to go through the sheriff?

No single rule requires it. Georgia's divorce forms describe acknowledgment of service, sheriff service and publication, and O.C.G.A. 9-11-4 also allows service by other authorized servers. Your attorney chooses the method. We serve family law papers discreetly and describe the recipient on the affidavit so the Richmond County clerk has a clear record.

Will you serve an eviction in Augusta?

Only after the Richmond County magistrate court confirms it accepts a private server for the dispossessory summons. The 2025 amendment to O.C.G.A. 44-7-51 added approved process servers without defining the term, and courts differ in practice. We never carry out writs or set-outs. The how to serve an eviction in Georgia guide lays out the steps.

What if the defendant lives in North Augusta, South Carolina?

Then the papers are served in South Carolina, and the method depends on the rule your court uses for service outside Georgia. Tell us which court issued the papers and we match the delivery and affidavit to that rule. Our South Carolina service team coordinates the attempt under the same quote.

Can an Augusta household member accept the papers?

Georgia's abode rule, O.C.G.A. 9-11-4(e)(7), generally permits leaving the papers at the defendant's home with a resident of suitable age and discretion. A neighbor, a guest or a babysitter does not qualify, as the Georgia service how-to also explains. The affidavit describes the person who accepted, and counsel decides whether abode service is the right choice for the case.

Do subpoenas for Augusta witnesses need a fee?

If the witness lives outside the county where testimony will be given, O.C.G.A. 24-13-25 generally makes the subpoena valid only when it is served with a tender of one day's $25 fee plus 45 cents a mile. Tell us where the witness lives and where they will testify, and we note the tender on the return.

How quickly can Augusta papers be served?

Routine is the standard pace, and Urgent, Rush and Same Day Rush move the first attempt earlier for 1.5, 2 and 3 times the Routine rate. Actual timing depends on the defendant's schedule and access, so we give you the planned window in writing and update you after each attempt rather than promise a specific hour.

Do you serve federal papers in Augusta?

Yes. The Southern District of Georgia's Augusta Division sits at 600 James Brown Blvd. and covers Richmond, Columbia and eight other counties. Federal summonses follow Federal Rule 4, and we return an affidavit for the federal file. Get in touch with Delator Field Services with the case number and deadline.
