The published Routine starting rate is $210, and the Kentucky county price map shows neighbors.

01Local service landscape

Mountains, Creek Roads and the State's Largest County by Area

Pike County is Kentucky's largest county by area, and it had an estimated 54,721 residents in 2025. Pikeville sits in the Appalachian Mountains along the Levisa Fork of the Big Sandy River, while Coal Run Village and Elkhorn City are the other incorporated cities. South Williamson is unincorporated, as are dozens of hollow communities, and the county shares a border with West Virginia. Our Kentucky service of process network applies one written standard across all of them.

Distance here is measured in curves, not miles. Many homes sit up narrow creek roads where house numbers are missing and cell coverage fades, and winter weather can make a steep driveway impassable. We review every address with counsel before the first attempt, ask for landmarks and directions, and say in writing what a realistic schedule looks like. Our Boyd County servers take papers that move down the Big Sandy, and the published Kentucky county rates show each county's starting figure.

02Attorneys and law firms

Serving 35th Circuit and Federal Papers for Coalfield Counsel

Pike County files come from Pikeville practitioners, from Lexington and Louisville firms, and from West Virginia offices with clients near the state line. Typical matters include mine and industrial injury claims, mineral and property disputes, medical matters, contract and collection suits and family cases. Our Kentucky attorney service desk gives each office one contact for the written quote, the attempt log and the completed return.

We read each file for the problems that cost days in the mountains: a mailing address that is only a post office box, a defendant who works rotations out of state, or an energy company whose registered agent is in Louisville or Frankfort. A Kentucky defendant served in person generally has 20 days to answer under CR 12.01. Counsel serving across several states can compare figures on the multistate price map, and papers from other courts follow our interstate papers process.

03Evasive and hard-to-serve

Remote Homes, Rotating Shifts and Neighbors Who Talk

In close-knit hollows, a strange car is noticed quickly and word travels ahead of the server. Defendants may also work long rotations in energy or health care, or travel across a state line for work. We plan attempts around what counsel knows of the person's schedule, including early mornings, evenings and weekends where approved, and KRS 454.135 gives no Sunday or holiday exemption from civil process. Our approach to hard-to-serve Kentucky defendants explains more, and Kentucky same day service options cover a close deadline.

Because a Kentucky summons cannot be left with a relative, the log has to show genuine attempts to reach the defendant personally. When those attempts fail and counsel concludes the person is concealing themselves or left the county to avoid service, CR 4.05 allows the clerk to issue a warning order on an affidavit. The clerk appoints a warning order attorney, who must report within 50 days, as our Kentucky warning order explainer describes.

04Family law, evictions, small claims, subpoenas

Family Court, Tenancies, Small Claims and Subpoenas in Pikeville

Dissolution and custody cases are filed in the Pike County Family Court division at the Judicial Center, which has its own phone line. Pike County respondents may be served by hand, by the clerk's certified mail, or may choose to sign a waiver of service and entry of appearance. Where the parties live far apart in the county, we plan delivery with counsel rather than waiting for a chance encounter. The general sequence appears in our Kentucky family law service guide.

For rentals, KRS 383.210 directs the forcible detainer warrant to the sheriff or any constable, who gives at least three days' notice of trial, so we do not serve that notice or carry out warrants of restitution. Outside areas that adopted the landlord-tenant act, a tenancy at will generally ends on one month's written notice under KRS 383.195, which we can deliver where the lease allows. Pike small claims, limited to $2,500, generally go out by the clerk's certified mail or the sheriff. Our Kentucky subpoena service page covers witnesses under CR 45.03.

05Documentation and challenges

Return Records That Explain Exactly Where the Server Went

A summons transferred by the clerk under CR 4.01(1)(b) is proved by the server's endorsed return, which CR 4.03 expects on file promptly and before the response period runs. We send the completed return quickly so your office can file it at 175 Main Street, and federal returns are prepared for the London clerk in the format Rule 4 requires, while Kentucky process server pricing stays the same either way.

In mountain country, the record has to explain location as well as delivery. Our notes describe the road taken, landmarks used to identify the house, arrival time, who answered, and whether the papers were handed over or offered on refusal under CR 4.04(2). If a defendant later says the server went to the wrong place, that record answers. A specific question about a serve can start on the Delator contact page, and the people behind Delator Group explains the organization.

06Kentucky service rules

How Kentucky Law Handles a Summons in Pike County

Once the complaint is filed, CR 4.01 has the clerk issue the summons and, as the plaintiff directs, send it by certified mail, transfer it to a person other than a mail carrier who is authorized to deliver it, or return it to the filing party to arrange service. KRS 454.140 sends process to the sheriff of the county, and under KRS 454.145 a court may appoint a person for good cause to deliver one particular paper. Our overview of who may serve in Kentucky explains each route.

No Kentucky statute licenses private process servers, and DFS never presents a server as holding a Kentucky credential. Each Pike County job starts with a call to the clerk about how the summons issued and whether private delivery or an appointment applies; anything reserved to an officer is sent to the sheriff. Coal, gas and medical companies are generally reached through the registered agent KRS 14A.4-040 requires them to keep. This is general information rather than legal advice; our complete Kentucky serving guide adds detail.

07A Pike County angle

Federal Pike County Cases Now Go to London, Not Pikeville

Eastern District of Kentucky General Order 25-15, entered October 31, 2025, ended all district court business at Pikeville effective December 31, 2025. Cases from Pike, Letcher, Floyd and Knott counties now go to the London Division, while Johnson, Magoffin and Martin cases go to Ashland. A local news report put London about two hours from Pikeville. Older pleadings and templates may still name Pikeville, so we check the caption and the issuing clerk on every federal file. Our Laurel County process servers work alongside the London courthouse.

The change affects returns more than the serve itself. Defendants in Pike County are still found in the same hollows and towns, but federal proof now goes to 310 South Main Street in London, and Joint Local Rule 4.1 adds steps when a party serves through the Kentucky Secretary of State. State matters stay at the Pikeville Judicial Center. Pike County's history, including the Hatfield and McCoy feud that ran from 1860 to 1891 across the West Virginia line, is a reminder that state borders here have always mattered; our Ashland service team covers the north.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a private process server deliver papers in Pike County?

CR 4.01 lets the clerk hand a summons to an authorized person or give it back to the plaintiff to arrange service, and Kentucky licenses no private servers. Practice can still vary by court, so we confirm how the Pike County clerk issued the summons before the first attempt. Our Kentucky statewide service page gives the background.

How much does a process server in Pike County cost?

Pike County's published Routine starting rate is $210. Urgent, Rush and Same Day Rush cost 1.5, 2 and 3 times that base. Remote hollow addresses or winter conditions may require more planning, which we raise before any work starts. The final price is always confirmed in writing, and Kentucky rates county by county show nearby figures.

Are Pike County federal cases still heard in Pikeville?

No. Under Eastern District General Order 25-15, all district court business at Pikeville ended December 31, 2025, and Pike County federal cases now go to the London Division at 310 South Main Street in London. State court matters remain at the Pike County Judicial Center in Pikeville. We check each caption so the return goes to the right clerk.

Where are Pike County state court returns filed?

State court returns go to the Circuit Court Clerk at the Pike County Judicial Center, 175 Main Street in Pikeville, which keeps Circuit, Family and District records. Family Court has its own line at (606) 433-7558. Returns are drafted for the issuing court, whether that is in Pikeville, London or another state.

Can papers be left with a relative at the house?

Not for a Kentucky summons. Under CR 4.04(2), delivery generally has to be to the defendant, by offer if refused, or to an agent appointed or designated by law. A private server cannot hand a Kentucky summons to a relative instead. If hand delivery up the hollow keeps failing, counsel can weigh the clerk's certified mail or a warning order using the log.

Do you serve eviction papers in Pike County?

Not the forcible detainer notice. Pike forcible detainer warrants go to the sheriff or a constable under KRS 383.210, and AOC-215 is written to them; a warrant of restitution is theirs to carry out as well. A landlord's written notice to vacate, where the lease permits, and a separate lawsuit are the papers we can take on. See eviction notices in Kentucky.

What if the defendant cannot be found in the county?

Every attempt is logged with dates, times, roads and observations. Where a defendant has left the county to avoid service, is concealing themselves or has an unknown residence, CR 4.05 allows a warning order on an affidavit, and the defendant is generally deemed summoned on the 30th day after entry. Read Kentucky remedies for avoided service.

How fast can papers be served in Pikeville?

Routine service usually means a first trip to the address within several days, weather and roads allowing. Urgent, Rush and Same Day Rush move faster at 1.5, 2 and 3 times the Routine rate, and Same Day depends heavily on the address and the weather. Share the court date and we will put a realistic Pike County timeline in writing before you pick a tier.

Does Delator Field Services have a Pikeville office?

No. Our home base is Nashville, Tennessee, where Delator Group is headquartered, and Delator Field Services has no Kentucky office. Pike County serves are coordinated through servers suited to the issuing court, and every one includes a dated attempt log, a price put in writing before the work begins and a signed return.

What should I include with a Pike County request?

Send the issued summons and complaint, the defendant's full name, every known address with directions and landmarks, the employer if known, a description or photo, vehicle details and the deadline. Note whether the case sits in Pikeville or in federal court in London. Self-represented filers can start with Kentucky small claims service guidance so nothing is missing.
