A County Seat on I-85 Near the Georgia Line

Anderson had 28,106 residents in the 2020 census, but Anderson County holds about 220,000, spread through eleven municipalities and a long stretch of lakefront. Interstate 85 enters South Carolina from Georgia over Lake Hartwell on the Vandiver Bridge and passes Anderson on its way to Greenville. Clemson and Easley each lie partly in the county, which means a mailing address alone does not settle where a defendant lives. The countywide Anderson service page covers every town we reach.

Anderson County's Routine starting rate is $125, the same as Greenville and Pickens counties, while Oconee County to the west is $140 and Abbeville County to the south $175. We confirm the county before quoting, especially for addresses near Clemson, Iva and Honea Path. Defendants in the Clemson and Easley areas north of the line are handled through the Pickens County process servers, and the South Carolina county rate map shows every county's starting rate.

02Attorneys and law firms

For Anderson Practices and Out-of-Area Counsel

Anderson practices file collection actions, property and boundary disputes, injury claims and family cases, and counsel in Greenville, Columbia or another state may need an Anderson County defendant served on a timetable. We start with the papers: the Anderson County caption, the attached complaint and a defendant's name that matches the address. The South Carolina law firm service program explains how quotes, attempt notes and affidavits are reported to your office.

SCRCP 4(c) bars an attorney in the action from serving their own summons, but a paralegal or any other independent adult may. Firms often find that sending staff costs more than it saves once rural distances and repeat attempts are counted. Delator Group is a Tennessee firm headquartered in Nashville, and our overview of South Carolina process servers describes how DFS coordinates service through servers suited to each county and court.

03Evasive and hard-to-serve

Mill Towns, Country Roads and Defendants Who Will Not Answer

Anderson County mixes older in-town streets in places like Pelzer and Williamston with rural roads, lake subdivisions and newer neighborhoods near the interstate. Each poses a different problem: houses with no visible number, long gravel drives, or occupants who never come to the door. We confirm the address on arrival, look for signs of who lives there, and do not hand papers to anyone until identity is clear. Our strategy for hard-to-serve South Carolina defendants sets out how we sequence attempts.

We move attempts across early mornings, evenings and weekends when ordinary hours fail. Sunday attempts are lawful under S.C. Code 15-9-17 as long as the person is not going to, at or coming back from religious services. If counsel eventually seeks an order for publication under S.C. Code 15-9-710, the dated attempt log supports the required affidavit of diligence, as our service by publication guide explains. Same-day and Rush service is available when a hearing is near.

04Family law, landlords and subpoenas

South Main Street Family Court, Landlords and Witnesses

Anderson County Family Court sits at 100 South Main Street, and divorce, custody and support cases are filed through the Clerk of Court. The summons and complaint are served under SCRCP 4 like any civil case, and a cooperative spouse may sign an Acceptance of Service. When counsel chooses personal delivery, our server confirms identity, delivers quietly and leaves. Rules to show cause are other process under the second sentence of SCRCP 4(c), served by the sheriff or a court designee. The South Carolina divorce papers page compares routes.

For landlords, the magistrate's rule to vacate is generally served through the sheriff's office, and we serve it only where the magistrate court confirms private service is accepted. A writ of ejectment is never posted or executed by DFS. We do serve landlords' summonses in suits for rent or damage, and magistrate claims up to $7,500 under SCRMC 6(c), as described on our small claims process service page. Witnesses are covered on the South Carolina subpoena page.

05Documentation

Anderson Affidavits Built for Scrutiny

SCRCP 4(g) asks the person serving process to make proof promptly. A sheriff uses a certificate, and anyone else an affidavit stating the date, time and place of service and the name and address of the person served, or a description if the name is unknown. Our Anderson affidavits answer each point directly, and for abode service we explain who received the papers and why that person qualified. The guide on how to serve South Carolina papers shows how proof is filed.

Every affidavit is backed by an attempt log covering each visit, including those that failed, with times, observations and anything said at the door. That record is what counsel uses if service is later challenged. For Anderson County work the server may be a vetted contractor rather than Tennessee staff, held to Delator's written documentation standard all the same. The page about Delator Group explains the firm, and the multistate rate map helps firms with cases in several states.

06South Carolina rules

How South Carolina Service Works in Anderson County

SCRCP 4(c) authorizes the sheriff, a deputy, and any person 18 or older who is not a party or a lawyer in the case to serve a summons. South Carolina licenses no private servers, which makes those limits the working qualification for every Anderson County assignment. Other process, such as orders and writs, generally needs an officer or a court designee, and we verify that with the court first. See our guide to who may serve process in South Carolina.

SCRCP 4(d)(1) permits personal delivery, delivery at the defendant's dwelling with a resident of suitable age and discretion, or delivery to an authorized agent. Mail options exist for a summons, restricted-delivery certified mail or a qualifying commercial carrier, yet a default generally depends on a receipt the defendant personally signed. After service, SCRCP 12(a) generally allows 30 days to answer. Your attorney can confirm the specifics, and registered agent service in South Carolina covers companies.

07Anderson angle

Lake Houses and the Usual Place of Abode

Lake Hartwell lies along Anderson County's border with Georgia, and a lakefront home may belong to someone whose main residence is somewhere else. That matters because SCRCP 4(d)(1) allows papers to be left only at the defendant's dwelling house or usual place of abode, with a resident of suitable age and discretion. A weekend lake house may not qualify, and a caretaker or guest there does not count as a resident. A process server in Anderson should ask counsel about the address before relying on abode service there.

When the only known address is a second home, we focus on personal delivery to the defendant and record when the property appears occupied. If the defendant's primary residence is in another county or state, we tell counsel so the right route can be chosen, whether that is another South Carolina county or out-of-state service under S.C. Code 15-9-750. Upstate neighbors are covered through Greenville process service and the Greer process server page.

Process Servers Near Anderson

Anderson County cases often name defendants elsewhere in the Upstate. Suburban addresses south of Greenville are handled through Mauldin process service, and the rest of that county through the Greenville County process servers. Defendants farther up I-85 go to Spartanburg process service, while those who moved toward the Midlands go to the Columbia process server page. Every one of those jobs follows the same pattern as an Anderson serve: a written price before the first attempt, logged visits and a signed affidavit for the clerk.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a process server in Anderson cost?

Anderson County's published Routine starting rate is $125. That makes Urgent $188, Rush $250 and Same Day Rush $375. The quote for your papers depends on where the defendant is, what is being served and when, and it is confirmed in writing first. Oconee and Abbeville counties carry their own rates on the county-by-county South Carolina price list.

Who may serve a summons in Anderson County?

Under SCRCP 4(c), the choices are the sheriff, a deputy, or an independent adult at least 18 who is neither a party nor counsel. No state license exists for private servers. Orders, rules to show cause and writs fall under a separate sentence of the rule and generally go through the sheriff or a court designee.

Can you leave papers at a lake house?

Only if the lake house is the defendant's dwelling house or usual place of abode and the papers go to a resident of suitable age and discretion, as SCRCP 4(d)(1) requires. A weekend home, a caretaker or a visiting guest generally does not meet that test. We raise the question with counsel before relying on abode service at a second home.

Do you serve rules to vacate in Anderson?

Only where the magistrate court confirms private service is accepted. The magistrate courts checked in South Carolina send the rule to vacate through the sheriff's office, and only a constable or deputy sheriff carries out a writ of ejectment. Civil summonses for rent or damages remain available. The eviction service guide for South Carolina covers each step.

Is certified mail an alternative in Anderson?

Yes. Rule 4(d)(8) permits certified or registered mail restricted to the addressee with a return receipt, and Rule 4(d)(9) permits a qualifying commercial delivery service. Service is effective on delivery, but a default generally requires a receipt showing the defendant's own acceptance and can be set aside if someone unauthorized signed. Hand delivery avoids that dispute.

Can you serve a company in Anderson County?

Yes. We deliver to the registered agent, or to an officer, managing agent or general agent named in counsel's papers, and record the person's name and title. If a South Carolina corporation has no registered agent who can be served with reasonable diligence, the court or clerk can order certified mail to the corporate secretary under S.C. Code 15-9-210(c). Our company service page for South Carolina has more.

When are subpoena witness fees paid?

SCRCP 45 provides $25 a day plus mileage from the witness's home to the place named in the subpoena, paid when the witness arrives rather than when served. Deposition subpoenas for non-parties must be issued and served in a county where the witness lives, works or regularly conducts business in person, and we confirm that before accepting an Anderson job.

Is Sunday service allowed in Anderson?

Generally yes. Under S.C. Code 15-9-17, judicial documents may be served on Sunday, though not on a person traveling to, attending or coming home from church or another religious service. We plan Sunday attempts around that limit and log the time. The guide on defendants avoiding service discusses timing strategies.

How long does an Anderson defendant have to respond?

Common Pleas defendants generally get 30 days after the complaint is served (SCRCP 12(a)), and magistrate defendants 30 days counted from the first day after service (SCRMC 7(b)). A self-help divorce summons sent by restricted certified mail allows 35 days. Your lawyer should confirm the exact date, since weekends, holidays and the method of service can all affect it.

Can you serve papers from a Georgia court in Anderson?

Yes, where counsel confirms the method. Tell us the rule your court uses for service outside its own state, and we match the Anderson County delivery and affidavit to it. Subpoenas from other states are first lodged with the clerk in the county of discovery, as S.C. Code 15-47-120 requires. Our out-of-state papers page explains how that works.
