Quick answer

How do I hire a process server in St. Matthews, Kentucky?

Send the filed papers with the St. Matthews address. We confirm how the Jefferson County clerk issued the summons and whether private delivery fits, then send the tier and price in writing. Routine Jefferson County service has a published starting rate of $125, and the Kentucky process serving price map lists every surrounding county.

01Local service landscape

Serving Papers in St. Matthews and Its Neighboring Small Cities

St. Matthews incorporated in 1950 and had 17,534 residents at the 2020 census. It is part of the Louisville/Jefferson County Metro Government yet remains its own home-rule city, one of more than 80 small cities listed for Jefferson County. Interstate 264 runs along its southern and eastern edges, and Shelbyville Road, part of U.S. 60, carries the shopping corridor. Cases that reach downtown or the west end are handled by our Louisville process servers.

The map here is crowded. Richlawn, Beechwood Village and Norbourne Estates are enclaves inside St. Matthews, and Lyndon, Woodlawn Park and Graymoor-Devondale border it to the east, so two neighbors can live in different cities. That rarely changes the court, because Jefferson County cases are filed in downtown Louisville, but it affects how an address is written and found. We confirm each address before dispatch, and suburban files to the southeast go to our Jeffersontown, Kentucky servers.

02Attorneys and law firms

St. Matthews Service for Louisville Firms and In-House Counsel

Louisville firms send St. Matthews papers for commercial disputes, injury claims, collections and family cases, and out-of-state counsel often have a Jefferson County defendant who lives in one of the eastern suburbs. Jefferson's 30th Circuit is a single-county circuit with heavy dockets, so a clean, prompt return helps counsel keep a case moving. We confirm the issuing court and how the summons was handed off, and one coordinator stays on the file. Our Kentucky law firm service page covers intake.

The shopping corridor brings a steady flow of business defendants. A store manager is not automatically an agent for service, so for a corporation we look to an officer, a managing agent, the chief agent in the county where the action is brought, or the registered agent named in its filing, as CR 4.04(5) and KRS 14A.4-040 provide. If the registered agent cannot be served with reasonable diligence, the statute allows certified mail to the principal office. The service on Kentucky entities page details what counsel should send.

03Evasive and hard-to-serve

Secured Buildings, Quiet Streets and Defendants Who Keep Moving

Eastern Jefferson County has controlled-access apartment buildings, condominiums with a front desk and long residential streets where a car in the driveway proves little. A server does not slip past a locked entry; instead, attempts are timed for when the defendant is likely to come and go, and each visit is logged. CR 4.04(2) requires the summons to reach the defendant personally, by offer on refusal, or through an authorized agent, so a concierge cannot accept it. The approach is on our Kentucky hard-to-serve page.

Some defendants move between rentals in the metro to stay ahead of a lawsuit. When a defendant has left the county to avoid service or has concealed himself, CR 4.05 permits a warning order on an affidavit, and CR 4.09 still allows personal service in Kentucky at any time before judgment. A detailed log helps counsel choose between more attempts and constructive service. The guide to Kentucky warning order attorneys and our Kentucky avoided-service explainer cover both routes.

04Family law, evictions and subpoenas

Family Court, Landlord Notices, Small Claims and Witnesses in Jefferson County

St. Matthews dissolution and custody cases are heard by Jefferson Family Court at the Judicial Center on West Jefferson Street. A respondent who agrees can file a waiver of service and entry of appearance; otherwise the petition is served in person or by the clerk's certified mail. We avoid serving family papers at a workplace or in front of children whenever there is another option. Our Jefferson County divorce papers help explains the choices, and the statewide guide to serving divorce papers adds detail.

Forcible detainer notices are directed to the sheriff or a constable under KRS 383.210, and the Jefferson County Sheriff lists forcibles among the papers it serves. Those notices and any warrant of restitution stay with officers. Louisville-Jefferson appears on a 2015 list of URLTA adopters, which sets 7-day notice for nonpayment, though counsel should confirm how a lease is covered. We can deliver a landlord's written notice and serve summonses in separate rent suits. Small claims up to $2,500 usually go by clerk mail or the sheriff, and any person over 18 may serve a subpoena under CR 45.03.

05Documentation

Returns From St. Matthews That Stand Up to Scrutiny

When the clerk transfers a summons to an authorized person under CR 4.01(1)(b), that person's endorsed return is the proof, and CR 4.03 calls for filing it promptly and within the defendant's time to respond. A St. Matthews return from us names the person served, the address, the date and time and how identity was confirmed. The attempt log behind it lists every visit, including the ones that failed. Short deadlines run through our Jefferson County same-day service.

If service is questioned, counsel can show exactly who received the papers, at which door, and whether they were handed over or offered after a refusal. That is the evidence a judge weighs when a defendant claims he was never served. Serves outside Tennessee may be carried out by vetted servers Delator contracts with, held to Delator's documentation standard. For witnesses, the St. Matthews subpoena delivery page explains the CR 45.03 proof options, including the certified statement filed with the issuing court.

06Kentucky rules

Kentucky Service Rules for St. Matthews Matters

Kentucky's CR 4.01, as of 2026, has the clerk issue the summons and then mail it by certified mail, hand it to an authorized person other than a mail carrier, or return it to the plaintiff to arrange service. KRS 454.140 directs process to the sheriff, and KRS 454.145 allows a court, for good cause, to appoint a person to serve a particular paper. There is no statewide license for private servers in Kentucky. Our explainer on who may serve papers in Kentucky covers each route.

A defendant generally has 20 days after service to answer under CR 12.01, and the summons must state that deadline. Service on a Sunday or holiday is permitted under KRS 454.135. Before a default judgment, federal law requires an affidavit on whether the defendant is in military service, a point counsel handle separately. Treat this as orientation rather than legal advice. The Kentucky legal papers how-to walks through the sequence, and our Kentucky small claims delivery page covers District Court claims.

07St. Matthews angle

From Potato Fields to a Retail Hub on Shelbyville Road

Before the malls, St. Matthews was farm country. The area was known as Gilman's Point by 1840, took its present name from St. Matthew's Episcopal Church in 1851, and in the early 20th century its produce exchange was reported to be the country's second-largest potato shipper. The 1937 Ohio River flood pushed many Louisville families east, and Mall St. Matthews later opened as Louisville's first indoor shopping mall. Families who moved farther out now fall to our Oldham County process service.

That retail history shapes service today. Many defendants work evening and weekend shifts along Shelbyville Road, and a workplace attempt there needs care: we do not serve inside a store over a manager's objection, and we prefer a home attempt when one is realistic. When a case also names a defendant east along U.S. 60 or I-64, our Shelbyville process serving team takes that leg, and the Kentucky process server hub shows coverage statewide.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a process server in St. Matthews cost?

Jefferson County's published Routine starting rate is $125, and its Urgent tier is $188, Rush is $250 and Same Day is $375. Your actual price reflects the address, how soon service is needed and what is being served, and we put it in writing before anyone knocks. The Jefferson County rate finder also lists nearby counties.

Where are St. Matthews court papers filed?

Although St. Matthews is a separate city, its residents' cases are filed in Jefferson County's courts in downtown Louisville. The Circuit Court Clerk's office is at the Louis D. Brandeis Hall of Justice, 600 W. Jefferson St., and Circuit and Family Court sit at the Judicial Center, 700 W. Jefferson St. Federal cases go to the Gene Snyder U.S. Courthouse on West Broadway.

Can a doorman or roommate accept papers in St. Matthews?

Not for a summons. CR 4.04(2) allows delivery to the defendant personally, an offer if the defendant refuses, or delivery to an agent authorized by appointment or law. A front desk, roommate or spouse does not qualify unless authorized as an agent. Kentucky's eviction notice works differently, but only an officer serves that notice.

Is the Jefferson County sheriff an alternative to a private server?

Yes. Process is directed to the sheriff by statute, and the Jefferson County Sheriff's Process Unit serves civil summonses, subpoenas, forcibles and garnishments for a $70 fee per paper since November 2025. Private delivery under the civil rules is another path, and we confirm how the clerk handled your summons before taking it. Some papers, such as eviction notices, stay with the sheriff.

How long does a Jefferson County defendant have to answer?

CR 12.01 generally allows 20 days from service of the summons, a deadline printed on the summons itself. CR 4.03 expects proof of service on file promptly, inside that same period. A defendant reached by warning order is deemed summoned 30 days after the order is entered (CR 4.08). Counsel should work from the service date on our return.

Can you serve a business at Mall St. Matthews or on Shelbyville Road?

Yes, through a person who can accept for it. Corporations are served on an officer, a managing agent, the chief agent in the county where the action is brought, or an authorized agent such as the registered agent. A sales associate usually does not qualify. We check the filing first, and our Kentucky business service desk lists what counsel should provide.

Do you serve Indiana or other out-of-state papers in St. Matthews?

Yes. Send the papers with the rule your court applies to service outside its state, and we match the St. Matthews delivery and sworn proof to it. Because no Kentucky statute controls how a foreign summons is served here, your court's own rule sets the standard. Our service for papers from other states page explains what to include.

Will you serve a St. Matthews eviction notice?

No. By statute the forcible detainer notice goes to the sheriff or a constable, and the AOC-215 form names them as the officers who deliver it. Set-outs under a warrant of restitution are theirs as well. Before a case is filed, we can hand a landlord's written notice to the tenant if the lease permits. Our Kentucky eviction service walkthrough explains the notice periods.

Can papers be served in St. Matthews on a Sunday?

Yes. Under KRS 454.135 a Kentucky defendant cannot claim a Sunday or holiday as protection from civil papers, apart from narrow situations like traveling to testify. Weekend attempts often suit St. Matthews residents who work weekday office hours, and our urgent and same-day Kentucky service can include them. Every attempt is logged.

Does Delator Field Services have a St. Matthews office?

No. Delator Group, a Tennessee firm headquartered in Nashville, runs Delator Field Services as its process serving division and keeps no Kentucky office. St. Matthews and Jefferson County serves are coordinated from Nashville through servers suited to the court and county, with the price confirmed in writing and a single point of contact on every file.
