Quick answer

What do Mississippi serves cost by county?

Delator Field Services publishes a Routine starting rate for every Mississippi county, from $125 in Hinds, Madison, Rankin, Harrison, DeSoto, Forrest, Lamar and Lee counties to $210 in Bolivar County. Faster levels cost 1.5, 2 and 3 times that figure. The statewide Mississippi process serving page explains how each serve is documented and returned.

01How rates are set

How Each Mississippi County Gets Its Starting Rate

Two inputs set every county figure: population and the distance from the nearest metro base a server works out of. Jackson anchors 24 counties, Tupelo 21, Hattiesburg 14 and Gulfport five. Seven counties closest to those bases, plus DeSoto on the Memphis side, open at $125 for Routine service. Jackson and Hinds County serves are the reference point most firms check first, so the finder above opens there.

Some counties are measured from a city across the state line because it is the closer base. Nine counties, including Tunica, Tate and Coahoma, are measured from Memphis, four southwest counties from Baton Rouge, Lowndes, Kemper and Noxubee from Tuscaloosa, George from Mobile and Washington from Monroe, Louisiana. Mississippi courts and rules still govern every serve. DeSoto County service at the Tennessee line and Lowndes County serves around Columbus show how that works.

02Service levels

Routine, Urgent, Rush and Same Day Rush Explained

Routine is the normal pace and the published figure for each county. Urgent costs 1.5 times Routine and moves the first attempt forward, Rush costs twice Routine and puts the file at the front of the queue, and Same Day Rush costs three times Routine for papers that must go out the day they arrive. In a $125 county those levels come to $188, $250 and $375, the same ladder used for Madison County serves around Ridgeland.

The right level depends on the deadline, not on anxiety. A complaint filed last week has most of the 120-day window under Rule 4(h) ahead of it and rarely needs Rush. A Rule 4(i) special summons returnable on a hearing date set a few weeks out, or a subpoena for a witness at next week's trial, often does. Firms juggling several deadlines can lean on our support for Mississippi law firms, and we say plainly when a faster level would not change the outcome.

03Distance and terrain

Why Mississippi Geography Shows Up in the Price

Mississippi is not mountainous, but it is long and rural. I-55 alone runs about 290 miles from the Louisiana line near Osyka to Southaven, and much of the Delta sits well away from any interstate. That is why Sunflower and Carroll counties start at $200, Bolivar, measured 104 miles from Memphis, starts at $210, and Lauderdale, an 82-mile run from Hattiesburg, starts at $185. Forrest County service around Hattiesburg anchors the southeast part of the map.

The coast is priced tightly because Gulfport sits at its center. Harrison County opens at $125, Hancock at $130 and Jackson County at $135, all reachable on I-10. River counties such as Warren and Adams fall in between, at $145 and $185. When the address is the real problem, skip tracing in Mississippi confirms where a defendant lives before anyone spends a long drive, and Warren County serves around Vicksburg cover the I-20 river crossing.

04What the rate covers

What Every Published Mississippi Rate Includes

Each published figure covers a standard serve at one address: review of the papers, scheduling, attempts at varied hours, a log entry for each visit and a signed affidavit of the kind M.R.C.P. 4(f) requires from a server who is not a sheriff. If abode service under Rule 4(d)(1)(B) becomes necessary, the follow-up first-class mailing is part of the plan. Our overview of how Mississippi service of process works explains each method the affidavit can describe.

Some files cost more, and we say so before work begins. A second address, a defendant who must be found first, a company whose registered agent has disappeared or a gated property that needs coordination can change the figure. A business partner background check helps when counsel needs to know who really runs the entity being served. Anything that changes the price goes into the written quote before the first attempt, and a true search is quoted separately at the $100 hourly investigative rate.

05Court-specific rules

Justice Court, Evictions and the Sheriff Comparison

Not every Mississippi paper is open to a private server. Justice court process goes to the constable first, and a private server serves it only after the constable has not returned process and the plaintiff asks in writing under Miss. R. Just. Ct. 14(g). Eviction summonses in county or circuit court generally follow Rule 4, and we confirm the court's practice before quoting. Only a sheriff or constable executes a removal warrant. Landlords can reduce repeat filings with tenant screening before the lease.

Counsel sometimes compare our figures with public fees. Under Miss. Code Ann. § 25-7-19, the sheriff's fee is $45 per service, and Rule 4(c)(1) generally allows a private server's costs up to that amount to be taxed. Constables collect $55 per service under § 25-7-27. The difference is in scheduling, varied attempt times and the detail of the log, which matters when service is challenged. Collection counsel often pair a serve with debtor skip tracing for that reason.

06Special situations

Federal Papers, Tribal Land and Military Installations

A federal summons follows Federal Rule 4 but is priced at the same county rate as a state paper. The Northern District holds court at Aberdeen, Oxford, Greenville and several other cities, and the Southern District sits in Jackson, Gulfport, Hattiesburg and Natchez. Military installations such as Keesler Air Force Base, Columbus Air Force Base and NAS Meridian set their own access rules, so we coordinate before any attempt and price the file afterward. Jackson County serves along the Pascagoula waterfront raise similar access questions at industrial sites.

Choctaw tribal land needs its own plan. Matters there may fall under tribal court jurisdiction, so Delator confirms at intake whether tribal land or a tribal employer is involved and does not serve process on reservation land without confirming the applicable tribal procedure. We quote those files only after counsel settles the method. Rankin County service east of the Pearl River and the rest of the capital area involve no such question and are quoted immediately.

07Ordering

How to Order a Mississippi Serve at a Published Rate

Find the county in the finder or the full table, then send the filed papers with every known address, a description or photo of the defendant, work hours if known and the deadline that matters. Tell us which service level you want. We confirm the county, check for anything that changes the price and send the final figure in writing, and no server leaves until you approve it. Harrison County serves in Gulfport and Biloxi follow the same order flow.

Firms with steady Mississippi volume can set up a standing arrangement so every file starts from the published rate without a fresh negotiation. Out-of-state counsel serving defendants in several states can compare figures on the multi-state process serving rate map, and anyone curious about investigative pricing can read what investigations cost in Mississippi before ordering a locate alongside the serve.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Why do process serving rates in Mississippi vary by county?

Each county's starting rate reflects its population and its distance from the nearest metro base a server works from. Eight counties start at $125 for Routine service, and Bolivar County starts at $210. Every published figure is a starting rate, and the final price is confirmed in writing before the first attempt, after we review the address and the deadline.

Is the published rate the final price?

Not always. It is a published starting rate. The final figure depends on the exact address, the service level, the number of defendants and whether a locate is needed first. We review those details and confirm the price in writing, and if nothing changes it, the published figure is what you pay. Hancock County serves around Bay St. Louis are a typical example.

How are Urgent, Rush and Same Day Rush priced?

Each level is a multiple of the county's Routine figure: one and a half times for Urgent, double for Rush and triple for Same Day Rush. In a $125 county that means $188, $250 and $375, and in a $185 county such as Adams or Lauderdale it means $278, $370 and $555. Same Day Rush is offered only when distance and timing make it realistic.

Why are some counties priced from Memphis, Baton Rouge or Mobile?

Our method measures each county from the nearest metro base, and for several border counties that base is out of state. Memphis serves as the base for nine northwest counties, Baton Rouge for four in the southwest, Tuscaloosa for three in the east, Mobile for George County and Monroe, Louisiana, for Washington County. Mississippi rules still govern each serve, and Jones County serves around Laurel show an in-state example.

How do your rates compare with the sheriff's fee?

Under Miss. Code Ann. § 25-7-19, the sheriff's fee is $45 per service, and Rule 4(c)(1) generally lets a private server's costs be taxed up to that statutory amount. Our published rates are higher because they cover scheduled attempts at varied hours, a detailed log and an affidavit prepared for a contested hearing. Which route suits a given file is a call for counsel.

Do these rates apply to justice court papers?

Only when a private server is allowed. Justice court process goes to the constable first, and a private server is used only after the constable has not returned process and the plaintiff asks in writing. When that happens, the county's published rate applies. Lamar County serves around Purvis follow the same rule for justice court files.

Does a faster level promise service by a certain date?

No. A faster level moves the first attempt forward and gives the file priority, but no server can make a person come to the door. We log every attempt so counsel can show diligence, and when a defendant is evading service, hit-and-run and evasive driver locates use the same investigative methods to find people who do not want to be found.

Do these rates apply to federal court papers?

Yes. A summons from the Northern or Southern District of Mississippi is priced at the same published county rate as a state court summons. Federal papers follow Federal Rule 4 rather than M.R.C.P. 4, and the affidavit is drafted for filing in whichever division issued the summons, whether that is Oxford, Aberdeen, Jackson, Gulfport, Hattiesburg or Natchez.

Can I compare Mississippi with other states?

Yes. The multi-state map covers every state where Delator Field Services publishes county rates, and Mississippi uses the same structure: a Routine starting rate for each county based on population and distance, plus set multiples for Urgent, Rush and Same Day Rush. Lafayette County serves around Oxford show how a $155 county fits that structure.

Who carries out serves in rural Mississippi counties?

Outside Tennessee, serves may be carried out by vetted servers Delator contracts with, all held to the same written documentation standard: logged, time-stamped attempts and a signed affidavit. Delator Group is a licensed Tennessee private investigation firm, headquartered in Nashville, and applies that standard in all 82 Mississippi counties, from the coast to the Delta.
