Quick answer
Can a private investigator trace stolen cryptocurrency in Colorado?
Often, yes. Most blockchains are public, so a crypto scam investigation can follow funds from your wallet through intermediate addresses to exchanges that may hold identifying records. Recovery is never guaranteed, but documented tracing helps police, regulators and attorneys act. Scam investigations start at $2,000, and our Colorado asset investigators support any recovery effort.
01The problem
Crypto Fraud Has Reached Every Corner of Colorado
Federal figures reported in April 2025 put nationwide losses to cryptocurrency investment fraud above $6.5 billion for 2024, and Colorado victims appear in every part of that picture: retirees in Pueblo and Grand Junction, young professionals in Denver and Boulder, small-business owners in mountain towns. The schemes rarely start with crypto. They start with a text, a dating match, a job offer or a call that sounds official, and crypto becomes the payment rail because it is quick and hard to reverse. Our Boulder County investigators see the romance-to-investment pattern often.
Colorado regulators have also brought cases over crypto offerings allegedly marketed through community and religious networks, and the state's Division of Securities, part of the Department of Regulatory Agencies, investigates crypto offerings that may violate the Colorado Securities Act. Whatever the entry point, the first hours matter. Victims who write down every wallet address, transaction ID and username, and who stop sending money, keep far more options open, and when a scammer turns out to be local, our Colorado locate specialists can find them. Our wider scam investigations in Colorado cover the non-crypto side of these schemes.
02Kiosk law
Colorado's Crypto Kiosk Law, in Force Since January 2026
Scammers often send victims to cryptocurrency kiosks at gas stations and convenience stores with instructions to feed in cash. Colorado responded with SB25-079, the Colorado Vending of Digital Assets Act, signed June 2, 2025 and effective January 1, 2026. According to the bill summary, it caps daily kiosk transactions at $2,000 for a new customer, meaning one in the first seven days, and $10,500 for an existing customer. Those limits shrink the damage a single scam call can do, and families in southern Colorado can meet with our Pueblo investigators to review kiosk losses.
The act also gives a new customer a path to a full refund of the first transaction sent outside the United States, if the customer reports the fraud to the kiosk operator and to a government or law-enforcement agency within 60 days. That window is short. We help victims gather kiosk receipts, wallet addresses and call records quickly so both reports can be made on time, and our elder scam investigations handle the many kiosk cases that target older Coloradans. If you are unsure which steps you have already taken, a consulting session sorts it out.
- Daily limit: $2,000 for a new customer
- Daily limit: $10,500 for an existing customer
- First-transaction refund if reported within 60 days
- Effective January 1, 2026
03Tracing
How Blockchain Tracing Works and What It Can Show
Every transaction on public blockchains such as Bitcoin and Ethereum is recorded permanently. Starting from your transaction ID, we follow the funds through the addresses that received them, note where they were split, pooled or swapped, and identify when they reached a service such as a centralized exchange. Exchanges that verify customer identity can hold records that link a wallet to a person, and those records are generally reached through law enforcement or legal process, which is where tracing becomes useful to counsel.
A crypto scam investigation does not stop at the chain. We pair tracing with the off-chain evidence the scammer left behind: phone numbers, usernames, website registrations, payment instructions and reused photos. Our Colorado litigation support for law firms turns that into subpoena targets, and when a subpoena must reach a company's registered agent in Colorado, Delator Field Services' Colorado servers deliver it under C.R.C.P. 45 with a signed affidavit.
04Schemes
The Crypto Schemes We See Most Often
Relationship investment scams, often called pig butchering, build trust over weeks through a dating app or a wrong-number text before steering the victim to a polished trading site that shows fake profits. Fake platforms let victims withdraw a small amount early, then demand taxes or fees to release the rest. Impostor schemes claim to be police, a utility, a bank's fraud department or a tech support desk and insist on payment through a kiosk. Task and job scams pay small sums for simple online work before asking the worker to deposit crypto to unlock earnings. Victims in the north metro can meet with our Thornton investigators.
Each scheme leaves different clues. For relationship scams, we research the person behind the profile through our Colorado online dating background checks. For impostor and job scams, we document the phone numbers, scripts and receiving wallets. Victims whose personal details were exposed during the scam are often targeted again, and our personal information removal service reduces what a follow-up scammer can find.
05Reporting
Where Colorado Victims Should Report
Report to your local police department or sheriff and to the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center at IC3.gov. If a kiosk was used, notify the kiosk operator as well, within the 60-day window in Colorado's kiosk law. Investment offerings can be reported to the Colorado Division of Securities, and consumer fraud to the Colorado Attorney General, whose Stop Fraud Colorado site explains current schemes. Keep a copy of every report and its reference number; our Colorado Springs investigators help El Paso County victims assemble them.
We do not replace any of these reports; we make them stronger. A report that includes a transaction timeline, wallet addresses, screenshots and the scammer's contact points is easier to act on. Some victims also face threats or extortion after they stop paying, sometimes using private photos or messages, and our Colorado online harassment investigations document that conduct, which can be harassment under C.R.S. § 18-9-111, for police and counsel.
06Warning
Beware of Crypto Recovery Scams
Victims are often contacted soon after a loss by someone claiming to be a recovery specialist, a lawyer, a regulator or even a hacker who can get the money back for an upfront fee. Many of these are the same criminals, or their partners, working a second round on the same victim. Warning signs include guaranteed recovery, payment demanded in crypto, pressure to act today and claims of special access to frozen funds. Real investigators and lawyers will not promise outcomes.
Delator does not promise recovery. We tell you in writing what tracing can and cannot show, what it will cost and who can act on the results. Scam investigations start at a $2,000 minimum, with additional hours at $100 per hour, as listed on our Colorado service pricing page. Our guide to what a Colorado investigator may lawfully do explains why we never hack accounts, impersonate officials or access data we have no right to.
07Civil options
Civil Recovery Paths in Colorado
When tracing leads to an identifiable person or company, counsel may pursue civil claims. Colorado's civil theft statute, C.R.S. § 18-4-405, generally allows an owner to recover the greater of $200 or three times actual damages, plus costs and attorney fees, from the person who took the property. Investment schemes may also support claims under the Colorado Securities Act. Business victims of payment diversion schemes often need a fuller review, which our Colorado corporate investigations provide.
Larger cases are generally filed in Colorado district court or in the U.S. District Court for the District of Colorado, and identifying recoverable assets early matters; our witness and counterparty background research supports that work. Colorado does not license private investigators at the state level, so choose a firm on supervision, insurance and method. Delator Group is a licensed Tennessee firm that works to Tennessee's standard, and our Denver team coordinates metro-area meetings with clients and counsel.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Can stolen cryptocurrency actually be recovered?
Sometimes, but never guaranteed. Recovery usually depends on funds reaching an exchange or service that can identify the account holder and freeze or return assets through law enforcement or legal process. Tracing shows where the money went and who might be able to act. We tell you honestly, in writing, what the evidence supports before you spend more.
I used a Bitcoin ATM in Colorado. Can I get a refund?
Possibly. Under SB25-079, effective January 1, 2026, a new customer may be entitled to a full refund of the first transaction sent outside the United States if the fraud is reported to the kiosk operator and to a government or law-enforcement agency within 60 days. Act quickly and keep every receipt. Our Colorado elder fraud investigators handle many kiosk cases.
What information should I save right now?
Save transaction IDs, wallet addresses, exchange account statements, kiosk receipts, screenshots of chats and the trading site, phone numbers, usernames and email addresses. Do not delete the conversation, even if it is upsetting. Stop sending money, including any fees to release funds. That record is the starting point for tracing and for every report you file.
Who should I report a crypto scam to in Colorado?
Report to local police, the FBI's IC3.gov and, for kiosk payments, the kiosk operator. Investment offerings can be reported to the Colorado Division of Securities and consumer fraud to the Colorado Attorney General. We help assemble the details each one needs, and our Colorado investigative consulting can review what you have already filed.
Someone says they can recover my crypto for a fee. Is it legitimate?
Be very cautious. Recovery scams target people who just lost money, often promising guaranteed results for an upfront crypto payment. Legitimate investigators and attorneys do not guarantee recovery and do not ask for payment in cryptocurrency. Check who you are dealing with, and read our checklist for vetting a Colorado investigator before paying anyone.
Do you hack scammers' accounts or wallets?
No. We use public blockchain data, open-source research and lawful records, and we pass findings to police and counsel who can use legal process. Hacking, impersonating officials or accessing accounts without authorization would be illegal and would damage your case. Lawful, well-documented evidence is what moves exchanges and courts.
Can my business hire you after a crypto payment fraud?
Yes. Companies lose funds through fake vendor instructions, compromised email, insider theft and fraudulent investment offers. We trace any crypto movement, examine how the payment was approved and identify control gaps. Our Colorado fraud risk audits help prevent the next loss once the immediate matter is handled.
What does a crypto scam investigation cost?
Scam investigations start at a $2,000 minimum, with additional hours billed at $100 per hour under a written scope you approve first. Complex cases with many wallets or chains take more time, and we tell you in advance. A remote deep-dive background check on an identified person is $300.
Can a lawyer sue the people behind a crypto scam?
If they can be identified and reached, yes. Colorado's civil theft statute generally allows the greater of $200 or three times actual damages plus fees, and investment schemes may support securities claims. Tracing and identity research help counsel decide whether a suit is practical. Our Colorado asset searches show whether there is anything to collect.
Does your investigator need a Colorado license?
Colorado does not license private investigators at the state level today; the former program ended after a 2020 veto. Delator Group is a licensed Tennessee firm, applies Tennessee's standard in every state, carries insurance and confirms any local business-license requirements before field work. For crypto matters, also ask how a firm documents tracing so others can verify it.
