Quick answer
How do I hire a process server in Rock Hill?
Send the filed papers and the defendant's address. We check whether the case is in York County, another South Carolina county or a North Carolina court, confirm the rule that governs service, and send the tier and price in writing. Routine York County service starts at $125, and the York County coverage page lists every town we reach.
01Local service landscape
A City Where the County Courthouse Is in Another Town
Rock Hill is York County's largest city, with 74,372 residents in the 2020 census, but the county seat and its Moss Justice Center are in the Town of York. Common Pleas filings and returns travel there, while family court sits on West Main Street in Rock Hill itself. That split confuses even experienced filers, so we confirm the court on every intake. Our York County process servers handle the towns of Clover, Sharon and Hickory Grove as well.
I-77 is the main artery. It crosses the Catawba River at Rock Hill and runs north through Fort Mill into North Carolina toward Charlotte, and much of the county's housing growth sits along that corridor in Fort Mill and Tega Cay. A server who knows when traffic backs up toward the state line can reach a defendant at home before they leave. Clients sending files from the Midlands can compare figures on the South Carolina rate map by county.

02Attorneys and law firms
Serving for York County Practitioners and Charlotte Firms
Attorneys in Rock Hill and York send us collection suits, injury claims, business disputes and family files, and Charlotte firms regularly need a South Carolina resident served just across the line. Each needs the right rule applied, because a York County summons and a Mecklenburg County summons are governed by different states' law. Our support for South Carolina law firms keeps one contact and one written quote per case, and fast-track South Carolina service is available when a deadline is close.
Federal practice adds a wrinkle. York County belongs to the Rock Hill division of the District of South Carolina, but its cases are heard in Columbia at the Perry Courthouse, so a federal summons for a Rock Hill defendant may come from counsel in Columbia or Charleston. Federal Rule 4 permits state-law methods, and we format the proof for the federal file. Our Columbia process serving team handles related papers in the capital.
03Evasive and hard-to-serve
Commuters to Charlotte and Defendants Who Keep Moving
Many York County residents commute north on I-77 every weekday, which means a midday attempt often finds no one home. We start with early mornings, evenings and weekends, and we ask counsel for any known workplace or schedule. A defendant who works in North Carolina can sometimes be served there under that state's rules if a statute allows, but home service in South Carolina is usually simpler. The hard-to-serve service page explains how attempts are planned, and Greer process service applies the same approach along I-85.
Some defendants simply refuse to open the door. Rather than repeat the same visit, we change the day and hour and record each attempt with the time and what was seen. A Sunday attempt is lawful here too, under S.C. Code 15-9-17, so long as the person is not on the way to, at or coming back from worship. If diligent attempts still fail, the guide on what happens when someone avoids service describes the court-ordered routes, such as publication.
04Family law, landlords and subpoenas
Family Court on West Main Street, Landlord Suits and Witnesses
York County family court at 1555 W. Main St. in Rock Hill hears divorce, custody and support cases, and its summonses and complaints are served under SCRCP 4 like other civil actions. Many spouses sign the Acceptance of Service form, SCCA 400.03, instead. When in-person delivery is needed, we keep it calm and private. Rules to show cause in contempt matters are other process for the sheriff or a court-designated person, so we do not treat them as routine; see our South Carolina divorce service page.
For landlords, the magistrate's rule to vacate is routed through the sheriff in the counties we checked, so we serve it only where the magistrate confirms private service is accepted, and we never post or execute a writ of ejectment. We regularly serve summonses in landlord suits for unpaid rent or damage. Magistrate claims up to $7,500 can be served by any qualifying adult, as the small claims service page explains, and trial and deposition subpoenas are routine work.

05Documentation
Affidavits That Work in York and in Another State's Court
For a South Carolina case, a private server proves service by affidavit under SCRCP 4(g), stating the date, time and place of service and the name and address of the person served, or a description if the name is unknown. Our Rock Hill affidavits add the manner of delivery and the earlier attempts. For papers from another state, we follow the issuing court's proof requirements instead. The South Carolina guide to serving papers walks through the in-state version.
Proof made outside South Carolina can be sworn before a notary, a clerk of court or another person authorized under Rule 4(h), which matters when a York County case requires service in North Carolina. Outside Tennessee, Delator may assign vetted contract servers, all working to the same written documentation standard, and counsel can request the attempt notes at any time. Firms with cases in both Carolinas can compare rates on the multistate pricing map.
06South Carolina rules
South Carolina's Summons Rules for a Rock Hill Case
SCRCP 4(c) allows the sheriff, a deputy or any person at least 18 who is not a party or an attorney in the action to serve a summons. Other process, such as orders and rules, generally requires the sheriff, another officer or someone the court designates, so we confirm before accepting it. South Carolina has no statewide license for private process servers, which our guide to who may serve in South Carolina explains further.
Under Rule 4(d), service can be made by personal delivery, by leaving the papers at the dwelling with a resident of suitable age and discretion, by delivery to an authorized agent, or for a summons by restricted-delivery certified mail or a qualifying commercial delivery service. Mail and courier service support a default only with the defendant's signature. Defendants generally have 30 days to answer under Rule 12(a). These are summaries, not legal advice; learn about Delator Group, a Tennessee firm headquartered in Nashville.
07Rock Hill angle
Papers That Cross the State Line in Either Direction
When a York County case needs a defendant served in North Carolina, SCRCP 4(f) allows service beyond the state only when a statute provides, and S.C. Code 15-9-750 makes personal service out of state equivalent to publication and complete on the day served. Counsel decides whether that route fits. A process server in Rock Hill who understands both directions can save a filing cycle, which is why we read the papers before assigning anyone.
The reverse is common too. When a North Carolina court sends a summons for a Rock Hill resident, the issuing state's rules govern, so we ask counsel which rule their court uses for service outside its state and match the delivery and affidavit to it. A North Carolina subpoena for discovery here must first be submitted to the York County clerk, who issues a South Carolina subpoena under S.C. Code 15-47-120. Our out-of-state papers service page covers both cases, and Spartanburg process service handles I-85 addresses to the west.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Where are Rock Hill civil cases filed?
Most York County civil cases are filed with the Clerk of Court at the Moss Justice Center, 1675-1G York Hwy, in York, and returns of service go there. Family court is in Rock Hill at 1555 W. Main St. Federal cases from York County are part of the Rock Hill division but are heard in Columbia. We name the issuing court on every affidavit.
How much does a process server in Rock Hill cost?
York County's published Routine starting rate is $125. Urgent service is $188, Rush is $250 and Same Day Rush is $375. The final price depends on the address, the papers and the deadline, and we confirm it in writing before a server is assigned. If the sheriff is a better fit for your papers, we will tell you.
Can you serve North Carolina papers on a Rock Hill resident?
Yes. When a North Carolina court's summons must be served in South Carolina, the issuing state's rules govern how service and proof are handled. Tell us the rule your court uses for service outside its state, and we match the delivery and affidavit to it. Counsel should confirm the requirements with the issuing court.
Do you serve eviction papers in Rock Hill?
Not as a standard service. The rule to vacate is served through the sheriff in the counties we checked, and only a constable or deputy sheriff executes a writ of ejectment. If a magistrate tells us a private server is acceptable for the rule, we can take it; otherwise it stays with law enforcement. Summonses in rent and damage suits are everyday work. See the South Carolina ejectment service guide.
How does a foreign subpoena work in York County?
Under S.C. Code 15-47-120, a party submits the out-of-state subpoena to the clerk of court of the county where discovery is sought, and the clerk issues a South Carolina subpoena incorporating its terms. Filing the foreign subpoena with the clerk does not count as appearing in a South Carolina court. The new subpoena is served under SCRCP 45. Our Rule 45 subpoena page has details.
Can papers be left with someone at a Rock Hill home?
Often, yes. Rule 4(d)(1) allows leaving the summons and complaint at the defendant's dwelling or usual place of abode with someone of suitable age and discretion who lives there. A guest or a neighbor does not qualify. Our affidavit records who received the papers so the court can judge whether the service was proper.
How long does a Rock Hill defendant have to answer?
A defendant in a York County Common Pleas case generally has 30 days after service of the complaint to answer under SCRCP 12(a). Magistrate court uses a similar 30-day period counted from the day after service. The self-represented divorce summons gives 35 days after restricted-delivery certified mail. Counsel should confirm the exact deadline.
What if a York County defendant has moved to North Carolina?
S.C. Code 15-9-750 treats personal service outside South Carolina as equivalent to publication, complete on the day served, where a statute allows service beyond the state. Proof can be sworn before a notary or clerk under SCRCP 4(h). If the defendant cannot be found at all, see service by publication in South Carolina.
Can you serve a business in Fort Mill or Rock Hill?
Yes. We serve the registered agent or an officer or managing agent named in counsel's papers and record the recipient's name and title. An unauthorized foreign corporation may be served through the Secretary of State under S.C. Code 15-9-245. The business entity service page explains the alternatives when no agent can be reached.
Do you serve federal papers in Rock Hill?
Yes. York County falls in the Rock Hill division, whose cases are heard at the Matthew J. Perry, Jr. Courthouse in Columbia. Federal summonses follow Federal Rule 4, which permits state-law methods, and we format the proof for the federal file. Start a Rock Hill request with the case number and deadline.
