Quick answer

How do I hire a process server in Pickens County, South Carolina?

Share the filed summons and complaint, each address you know for the defendant and when service must be done. We confirm the court and paper type, put the tier and price in writing, assign a server who is 18 or older and independent of the case, and return a signed affidavit. Routine work starts at $125; the South Carolina service rates by county show neighbors.

01Local service landscape

Suburban Easley in the South, Mountain Roads in the North

Pickens County had about 139,198 residents in 2025, and its population leans heavily to the south. Easley, the largest city, sits near the Greenville County line, while Clemson and Central share the southwestern corner and Liberty and Norris lie in between. The county seat of Pickens is farther north, and above it the land climbs toward the Blue Ridge. Our process serving program for South Carolina handles each of those settings under one written standard.

Table Rock State Park, a 3,083-acre park at the edge of the Blue Ridge Mountains in northern Pickens County, marks how different the upper county is from Easley's subdivisions. Homes there can sit at the end of long, winding drives with few neighbors. We group northern attempts carefully and log every one. Easley-area defendants who work in Greenville are often reached through our Greenville County process servers, and the county rate schedule lists each starting figure.

02Attorneys and law firms

Working With Firms That Share the 13th Circuit With Greenville

Pickens County shares the 13th Judicial Circuit with Greenville County, so many files come from Greenville firms as well as local practitioners in Easley, Pickens and Clemson. Common work includes contract and collection suits, vehicle claims on the roads into Greenville, construction and property disputes tied to new housing, and family cases. Our South Carolina attorney service program gives each firm one contact for the quote, the attempt record and the affidavit.

We review each file for local wrinkles before an attempt: an Easley or Clemson address that actually falls in Anderson County, a landlord company whose agent sits in Columbia, or a defendant with a town apartment and a family place in the hills. Because SCRCP 12(a) generally gives a defendant 30 days after service to answer, we send the affidavit promptly. Counsel working in several states can check figures on the multistate service rate map.

03Evasive and hard-to-serve

Long Driveways, Second Homes and Defendants Who Will Not Come Out

Evasion in Pickens County often takes advantage of distance. A defendant may stay at a relative's place up a mountain road, split time between Easley and a cabin, or simply refuse to answer a door at the end of a long gravel drive. We plan attempts at varied hours and days with counsel and respect posted property and any request to leave. South Carolina allows Sunday service except on someone going to, attending or leaving a religious service. Our page on defendants who avoid the door explains the method, and Lexington County service helps when one relocates to the Midlands.

When the person stays out of sight, a careful log is the record your attorney needs. Each visit notes the date, time, location and what the server observed. If counsel concludes the defendant cannot be found in South Carolina after due diligence, the court or the Clerk of Court for Common Pleas may order publication on an affidavit under S.C. Code 15-9-710. The Upstate publication guide outlines that route, and Same Day and Rush service handles short deadlines.

04Family law, evictions, small claims, subpoenas

Family Court, Landlord Files, Magistrate Claims and Witnesses

Pickens County family court matters are reported at the courthouse on East Main Street in Pickens. A divorce or custody summons and complaint are served under SCRCP 4, and a spouse who cooperates can sign an Acceptance of Service on the court's form. Rules to show cause for contempt and protective orders go through the sheriff, law enforcement or a court-designated person, so we do not list them as routine work. The guide to serving South Carolina divorce papers sets out the steps.

Rentals around Easley, Central and Clemson generate many landlord disputes. A magistrate issues the rule to vacate or show cause, and the tenant has ten days after service to answer it, but the county magistrate pages we read all assign that rule to the sheriff's office. Unless the court confirms private service, we leave it there, and writs of ejectment are always officer work. We handle rent and damage summonses, magistrate claims and subpoenas. Our SC eviction papers service page explains more.

  • Family court summonses for East Main Street cases
  • Rent and damage suits filed by landlords
  • Magistrate claims up to $7,500
  • Rule 45 subpoenas with fees paid on arrival

05Documentation and challenges

Documentation That Holds When Service Is Disputed

Private servers in South Carolina prove service by affidavit, while a sheriff uses a certificate. SCRCP 4(g) asks that the proof show the date, time and place of service and the name and address of the person served, or a description if the name is unknown. Our Pickens County affidavits are built around those items and delivered quickly, so counsel can file at the courthouse on East Main Street well inside the answer window.

Field notes from each visit feed the affidavit: arrival time, vehicles present, the condition of the drive, who answered and what was said. When papers are left with a resident at the defendant's dwelling, the record explains how residence and suitable age and discretion were confirmed. If service is challenged, Rule 4(i) lets the court allow proof to be amended where no substantial right is prejudiced. Concerns can start with a call or message to Delator, and our firm overview explains the chain of command.

06South Carolina service rules

South Carolina Service Rules for a Pickens County Case

SCRCP 4(c) authorizes the sheriff, a deputy, or any adult at least 18 who is not a party and not an attorney in the case to serve a summons. Anything else, such as an order, rule or writ, falls under the second sentence and generally goes to the sheriff, another officer or a person the court designates, so we check with the issuing court before accepting it. There is no statewide license for private process servers in South Carolina. Our eligibility guide for South Carolina servers explains the rule.

Rule 4(d)(1) allows an individual to be served in hand, through a resident of suitable age and discretion at the dwelling, or through an authorized agent. Certified mail with restricted delivery and a qualifying commercial delivery service are also allowed for a summons, but a default requires a signature by the defendant. If the limitations period has passed, SCRCP 3(a) generally requires service within 120 days of filing. This is general information, not legal advice; our walkthrough of South Carolina service adds detail.

07A Pickens County angle

Two Cities That Cross the Anderson County Line

Easley and Clemson both extend into Anderson County, and that matters more than it seems. A defendant with an Easley address may live under the Anderson County sheriff and magistrates, while the case itself sits in Pickens or Greenville. We confirm the county from the street address before planning attempts, and the affidavit records the exact location of service. When the address falls on the other side, our Anderson County process serving team handles it under the same quote.

Both cities also look east toward Greenville for work, shopping and courts, so a Pickens County defendant can often be reached at a Greenville County job. We discuss workplace attempts with counsel first and keep them brief and discreet. Defendants in the city itself are reached through service of process in Greenville, and those along I-85 near the airport corridor through our Greer process servers.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Who can serve a summons in Pickens County?

SCRCP 4(c) allows the sheriff, a deputy, or any adult 18 or older who is not a party and not an attorney in the case to serve a summons. Orders, contempt rules and writs generally go to the sheriff or a court-designated person instead. Our South Carolina service hub explains the difference in more detail.

What does a process server in Pickens County cost?

Pickens County's Routine work is published at $125 to start. Faster work is quoted as a multiple: one and a half for Urgent, two for Rush and three for Same Day Rush. Mountain addresses, long private drives or a near deadline can change the plan, and we raise those points before any work begins. The final price is confirmed in writing, and the SC rate lookup shows nearby counties.

Is an Easley address always in Pickens County?

No. Easley, like Clemson, extends into Anderson County, so the same city name can fall under a different sheriff and magistrate. We confirm the county from the street address before planning attempts, and the affidavit records exactly where service happened. If the address is on the Anderson side, our team there handles it under the same written quote.

Where are Pickens County affidavits of service filed?

Common Pleas affidavits go to the Clerk of Court at the Pickens County Courthouse, 214 E. Main St., Pickens 29671, listed at (864) 898-5857. Family court is reported in the same building. Federal cases from the county belong to the Anderson division. Our affidavit always carries the caption of the issuing court.

Do you serve eviction papers in Pickens County?

Not the rule to vacate as a standard service, because the magistrate courts we checked route it through the sheriff's office. Writs of ejectment are carried out by constables and deputies alone. We do serve landlords' related papers, such as summonses in suits for unpaid rent or damage and witness subpoenas. The South Carolina ejectment walkthrough explains each step.

Can a server enter posted property in the mountains?

A 2013 South Carolina Attorney General opinion, which is advisory only, concluded that a server acting within the scope of service likely does not violate the trespass statute, but that someone who exceeds that scope or refuses to leave when asked can become a trespasser. We stay within scope, leave when asked and log the attempt. Read what counsel can do when a defendant hides.

Can the summons be sent by certified mail instead?

Yes, SCRCP 4(d)(8) allows restricted-delivery certified mail and 4(d)(9) allows a qualifying commercial delivery service. A default judgment, though, can rest on mail service only if the record shows the defendant personally accepted it. For a defendant who may ignore the envelope, hand delivery with a detailed affidavit is usually the more dependable route.

How quickly can papers be served in Pickens County?

Routine jobs usually see a first attempt within several days. Urgent, Rush and Same Day Rush cost 1.5, 2 and 3 times Routine, and Same Day availability depends on how far the address is and when the papers arrive. Tell us the hearing date and we will state in writing what is realistic. Our South Carolina rush process service page has details.

Does Delator Field Services have a Pickens County office?

No. Delator Field Services serves papers for Delator Group, a Tennessee firm headquartered in Nashville, and has no South Carolina office. In Pickens County we coordinate service through vetted servers suited to the court and address, with a written price, a logged attempt history and a signed affidavit on every assignment.

What should a Pickens County request include?

Send the filed summons and complaint, the defendant's full name, every home, work and second-home address, notes on driveways or gates, a description or photo, vehicle details and the deadline. For a witness, add the hearing date and courtroom. Self-represented filers with smaller claims can review magistrate court service in SC first.
