Quick answer

How do I hire a process server in Alexandria?

Send the filed papers and the full street address. Because many Alexandria mailing addresses are actually in Fairfax County, we confirm the locality first, then identify the court and send the price in writing. City addresses start at a published Routine rate of $125, and our Fairfax County page covers the county side.

01Local service landscape

A Compact City With Every Court at 520 King Street

Alexandria is a small independent city by area, but its housing ranges widely: eighteenth-century rowhouses and carriage houses in Old Town, bungalows in Del Ray and Rosemont, and high-rise apartment and condominium towers in Carlyle, Eisenhower East and the West End. The circuit court and the general district court share the courthouse at 520 King Street in Old Town, so almost every state-court return in the city goes to one building. The Northern Virginia rate map shows how the city compares with nearby counties.

Traffic is the main constraint. I-95 and I-495 share the Capital Beltway along the city's southern edge, and I-395 runs along its western side toward the District with its own express lanes. Express lanes generally charge dynamic tolls unless a carpool of three or more uses an E-ZPass Flex in HOV mode. We schedule attempts around peak traffic and note on the log when a visit was moved for that reason. For defendants just north of the city, Arlington County service runs on the same system.

Serving Papers for the Rocket Docket and the State Courts

The Eastern District of Virginia's Alexandria Division sits at the Albert V. Bryan U.S. Courthouse, and the district is widely known as the rocket docket for how quickly its cases move. Federal Rule 4(m) generally requires service within 90 days of filing, and counsel in this division rarely wants to use much of that time. We start as soon as the papers arrive and send updates after each attempt. Our attorney service program in Virginia keeps the quote, the updates and the proof with one contact.

In state court, Alexandria firms send us complaints, motions for judgment, collection suits and subpoenas for depositions in commercial and employment cases. Many of the parties live or work across the region, so one case can need service in the city, Arlington and Fairfax at once. We price each leg in writing. Lawyers from other states can read how we handle non-Virginia court papers, and the multistate service pricing map shows how tiers are priced.

03Evasive and hard-to-serve

Concierge Desks, Key Cards and Government Commutes

Many Alexandria apartment and condominium towers keep a staffed front desk and key-card elevators. A defendant who does not want to be found can simply tell the desk not to call up. We do not argue with building staff or follow residents through secured doors; we record the visit, leave our contact with the desk where allowed and return at a different hour. The service for hard-to-reach Virginia defendants explains how those visits are scheduled.

Many residents also work in federal offices or for contractors whose buildings have their own security. Workplace attempts at those sites are usually impractical, so we focus on the home and time attempts to commuting patterns, early mornings and evenings. Because Va. Code 8.01-289 rules out Sunday service of civil process, Saturday is the main weekend option. When a defendant keeps avoiding contact, counsel can use our log to weigh the steps in the Virginia evasion guide or move the job to Prince William County serves after a move.

04Family law, landlords and subpoenas

Divorce, Custody, Unlawful Detainer and Subpoena Work

In Alexandria, divorce complaints are filed with the circuit court clerk at 520 King Street, and custody and support start in the Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court. Under Va. Code 20-99.1:1, a spouse can accept service by signing a notarized writing or signing before the clerk, and counsel often tries that before sending a server. When personal delivery is needed, we keep it discreet and describe the recipient on the return. Our Virginia divorce service overview explains each route.

Landlords in the city file unlawful detainer cases in the general district court. Va. Code 8.01-126 allows a private server to deliver the summons, and it must be served at least 10 days before the return day. The writ of eviction, when one issues, is executed by the sheriff after notice to the tenant. Small claims up to $5,000 and subpoenas for hearings and depositions are also routine, and our small claims service for Virginia and subpoena delivery in Virginia pages cover them.

  • Unlawful detainer summons only

05Documentation

Returns Built for 520 King Street and the Bryan Courthouse

For state cases, Va. Code 8.01-325 sets what a private server's return must contain: an affidavit of qualifications, the date and manner of service, the name of the party served, an annotation that a private server made the service, and the server's name, address and telephone number. It goes to the clerk within 72 hours unless the court orders otherwise. Federal proof follows Federal Rule 4(l) and the server's affidavit. The step-by-step Virginia service guide shows the state sequence.

Every visit also lands in a dated attempt log: address, date and time, who spoke, what the desk or neighbor said, and any visible signs of occupancy. In a fast federal case, that log is often what counsel needs to support a motion for more time or an alternative method. Outside Tennessee, serves may be carried out by vetted servers Delator contracts with, all held to the same documentation standard. For a hearing that is days away, the Virginia rush service page explains the faster tiers.

06Virginia rules

Virginia Service Law in Plain Terms for Alexandria Cases

Under Va. Code 8.01-293, process may be served by the sheriff or by any person 18 or older who is not a party or otherwise interested in the case; the statute uses the term private process server for such a person who charges a fee. There is no statewide license. Officers keep certain acts to themselves, including executing writs of possession, levying on property and serving capias or show cause orders, and we decline those. See who can serve process in Virginia for detail.

Serving an individual under Va. Code 8.01-296 begins with an attempt at personal delivery. If the defendant is not found at the usual place of abode, a family member 16 or older who lives there, not a guest, may receive a copy and an explanation. If that fails, the copy may be posted at the main entrance, which in an apartment building usually means the unit door. The filing party or its attorney then mails a copy and files a certificate of mailing at least 10 days before default. Our posted service explanation and the Virginia eviction service guide cover the mailing.

An Alexandria Address That Is Really in Fairfax County

The most common error we see on Alexandria files is the locality. Large parts of southeastern Fairfax County, including areas such as Mount Vernon, Huntington, Franconia and Kingstowne, use Alexandria mailing addresses even though they are outside the independent city. A summons addressed to Alexandria, VA may therefore need a server working in Fairfax County, with any fallback through the Fairfax County Sheriff rather than the city's. We check the parcel location before quoting.

Getting it right protects the record. The return still goes to the clerk of the issuing court, but an attempt log that names the correct locality avoids confusion if counsel later asks a sheriff to try or seeks an order based on diligence. A process server in Alexandria who confirms the city line first saves a wasted trip and a corrected return. When the address turns out to be in the county, Fairfax County process service takes the job, and Delator Group's about page explains who stands behind both.

Process Servers Near Alexandria

Alexandria cases regularly reach into the rest of Northern Virginia. Defendants in Arlington or the Fairfax County communities with Alexandria mailing addresses are handled through those county pages. Farther west, Loudoun County service and service in Manassas cover the outer suburbs, and I-95 south leads to Stafford County process service and Fredericksburg papers. Each of those jobs runs on the same written quote, dated attempt log and Virginia-form return as an Alexandria serve, so a regional file stays consistent across clerks.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Who can serve legal papers in Alexandria?

Virginia's service statute, Va. Code 8.01-293, lets either the sheriff or a disinterested adult age 18 or older who is not a party deliver process. Someone doing that for a fee is a private process server. Virginia does not issue a license for the work, though each private-server return must include an affidavit of qualifications.

How much does a process server in Alexandria cost?

The City of Alexandria's published Routine starting rate is $125, which makes Urgent $188, Rush $250 and Same Day Rush $375. The price for your papers depends on the address, the document and the deadline, and we confirm it in writing before anyone is sent. Fairfax County addresses have their own published rate.

My papers say Alexandria, VA. Is that the city?

Not always. Much of southeastern Fairfax County uses Alexandria mailing addresses, including areas such as Mount Vernon, Franconia and Kingstowne, even though those homes are outside the independent city. We confirm the locality from the street address before quoting, which also determines which sheriff would be involved if a private attempt fails.

How fast can you serve a federal summons in Alexandria?

We begin as soon as we receive the papers and confirm the address, and Urgent, Rush and Same Day Rush tiers are available. Federal Rule 4(m) generally allows 90 days, but the Alexandria Division moves quickly, so counsel usually wants service early. The Virginia same day service page explains the tiers.

Can you get into a secured Alexandria apartment building?

We do not bypass security or follow residents through locked doors. We ask the front desk whether the resident will come down, leave contact information where allowed and return at different hours. Every attempt is logged, and if the building prevents contact, counsel can use that record to consider substituted or posted service.

Do you serve protective orders in Alexandria?

No. Under Va. Code 19.2-152.10, a protective order goes to the primary law-enforcement agency, which serves it and makes the return. We can serve separate civil papers, such as a divorce complaint or custody petition, when those are not part of the order. Questions about the order itself should go to the court or law enforcement.

Can you serve an Alexandria eviction?

We serve the unlawful detainer summons, which Va. Code 8.01-126 permits a private server to deliver, with service due at least 10 days before the return day. Only the sheriff executes the writ of eviction, after giving the tenant at least 72 hours' notice. The Virginia unlawful detainer papers page has the timeline.

How do foreign subpoenas work in Alexandria?

Under Virginia's version of the Uniform Interstate Depositions and Discovery Act, the foreign subpoena goes to the clerk of the circuit court where discovery will take place, and the clerk issues a Virginia subpoena; the clerk may require a sworn attestation. We then serve the clerk-issued subpoena. See out-of-state papers in Virginia.

Do you serve on Sundays in Alexandria?

No. Va. Code 8.01-289 bars serving civil process on Sunday, apart from narrow exceptions such as persons escaping custody. We schedule early mornings, evenings and Saturdays instead, and the attempt log records that pattern so counsel can show diligence if the defendant later disputes the effort. Our Virginia process serving hub lists the other timing rules.

Is Delator Field Services based in Alexandria?

No. Delator Group is a Tennessee firm headquartered in Nashville, without a Virginia office. Delator Field Services coordinates Alexandria serves through vetted servers who follow our written documentation standard, and one DFS contact handles your quote, updates and return from start to finish.
