01Local service landscape
A Border County Stretched Between the Savannah River and the Midlands
Aiken County had about 181,515 residents in 2025, and its addresses fall into distinct clusters. North Augusta faces Augusta, Georgia, across the Savannah River. The city of Aiken holds the county seat and the Judicial Center. Burnettown, Jackson and New Ellenton sit along the routes south and east, while Wagener, Salley, Perry and Monetta are small towns in the farm country to the north and east. Our South Carolina process server network handles each cluster under one written standard.
Interstate 20 enters South Carolina from Augusta into North Augusta and continues past Aiken toward Lexington and Columbia, so many defendants work on one side of the river and sleep on the other. The Savannah River Site, a federal reservation of about 310 square miles, covers parts of Aiken, Barnwell and Allendale counties. In-town papers often go to our Aiken city process servers, and the SC process serving prices by county list every starting figure.
- Aiken and the Park Avenue Judicial Center
- North Augusta and the I-20 river crossing
- New Ellenton, Jackson and Burnettown
- Wagener, Salley, Perry and Monetta
02Attorneys and law firms
Supporting Firms That File in the 2nd Judicial Circuit
Papers reach Aiken County from local firms, from Augusta offices whose clients live on the South Carolina side, and from Columbia practitioners handling 2nd Circuit and federal matters. Common files include contract and collection suits, vehicle claims from I-20 and the river bridges, employment and contractor disputes, real estate matters and family cases. Our process serving for South Carolina counsel gives each firm one contact for the quote, the attempt log and the affidavit.
Before any attempt we screen the file for snags: a North Augusta mailing address for someone who now lives in Georgia, a company defendant whose registered agent sits in Columbia, or a federal contractor employee who works long, controlled shifts. Since the answer clock under SCRCP 12(a) generally runs 30 days from service, the signed affidavit leaves our hands right away. Firms working in Georgia and South Carolina together can compare figures on the multistate county pricing map.
03Evasive and hard-to-serve
Long Shifts, River Crossings and Defendants Who Keep Moving
In Aiken County, a difficult serve is often a person with two plausible addresses: a home in North Augusta and a partner's place in Augusta, or a rural property near Wagener and an apartment in Aiken. Long shift schedules and secured worksites add to the problem, and we do not assume a server can reach anyone at a controlled federal site. Attempts are planned at varied hours and days with counsel. Our process service for evasive defendants explains the method, and the Dorchester County team helps when a defendant relocates toward Charleston.
When nothing works, the documentation keeps the case moving. Every attempt is logged with date, time, location and what the server observed. Once counsel decides that due diligence has failed to find the defendant anywhere in the state, S.C. Code 15-9-710 lets the court or the Clerk of Court for Common Pleas order publication on an affidavit, and personal service outside the state counts as equivalent under 15-9-750. Our publication service guide for South Carolina explains both paths, and rush service options cover short deadlines.
04Family law, evictions, small claims, subpoenas
Domestic Cases, Rentals, Magistrate Claims and Witness Papers
Aiken County's family court sits at 109 Park Ave. in Aiken. The summons and complaint in a divorce or custody case are served under SCRCP 4 like any civil action, and a cooperative spouse may sign an Acceptance of Service. Rules to show cause and protective orders follow the second sentence of Rule 4(c), which points to the sheriff, law enforcement or a court-designated person, so we do not list them as routine work. See serving a South Carolina divorce summons for the sequence.
Rental housing near the river and in Aiken creates regular landlord files. The magistrate issues a rule to vacate or show cause, and the tenant has ten days after service, but the magistrate courts we checked route that rule through the sheriff's office. We do not serve it without the court's confirmation, and only a constable or deputy sheriff carries out a writ of ejectment. We serve rent and damage summonses, magistrate claims up to $7,500 and Rule 45 subpoenas. Our eviction-related papers page has more.
- Family court summonses and complaints for Park Avenue hearings
- Separate suits for unpaid rent or property damage
- Magistrate court claims up to $7,500
- Rule 45 subpoenas for hearings, trials and depositions
05Documentation and challenges
Records That Answer a Motion to Quash
When service is challenged, the court looks first at the proof. In South Carolina a sheriff files a certificate and a private server files an affidavit, and SCRCP 4(g) asks for the date, time and place of service plus the name and address of the person served, or a description when the name is unknown. Every Aiken County affidavit we prepare follows that list, and it goes to your office promptly so it can be filed with the Clerk of Court.
The affidavit draws on notes taken during each visit: arrival time, vehicles in the drive, who answered and what was said. If papers were left at the dwelling with a resident of suitable age and discretion, the affidavit explains how residence was confirmed and describes that person. Rule 4(i) lets a court allow proof to be amended when no substantial right is prejudiced. Concerns about a disputed serve can start on the request form, and Delator Group's history explains who reviews the work.
06South Carolina service rules
What South Carolina Law Says About Serving an Aiken County Summons
SCRCP 4(c) allows a summons to be served by the sheriff, a deputy, or anyone at least 18 who is not a party to the case and not an attorney in it. Court orders, rules and writs are other process and generally belong to the sheriff, another officer or a person the court designates, so we check with the issuing court first. South Carolina has no statewide license for private process servers, and our servers meet the rule's age and independence test. Our guide on who can serve process in South Carolina has the details.
An individual can be served personally, through a resident of suitable age and discretion at the home, or through an authorized agent. Restricted-delivery certified mail and qualifying commercial delivery are also allowed for a summons, but neither supports a default unless the defendant signed. Sunday service is allowed except on someone going to, attending or leaving a religious service. If the limitations period has run, SCRCP 3(a) generally requires service within 120 days after filing. This is general information; see the complete walkthrough for serving papers.
07An Aiken County angle
Serving One Case Across the Savannah River
North Augusta and Augusta function as one metro area divided by a state line. A defendant may work at a Georgia hospital or plant, rent in North Augusta and register a car at a parent's address in either state. Because South Carolina and Georgia have different rules on who may serve and how, we confirm where the person can actually be found before scheduling attempts. Georgia-side work runs through our Georgia process server coverage, which checks that state's server requirements before accepting.
Papers going the other direction need the same care. When a Georgia court sends a summons for a defendant living in Aiken County, we ask counsel which rule the issuing court uses for service outside its state, and we match the delivery and affidavit to it. A two-state file keeps a single quote and a single attempt record. Counsel can read about handling summonses from other states, and defendants who move toward the capital are reached through Lexington County service.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Who may serve a summons in Aiken County?
SCRCP 4(c) lets a sheriff or deputy serve an Aiken County summons, and so may any adult 18 or older who is neither a party nor counsel in the case. Orders, rules to show cause and writs generally go through the sheriff or a court-designated person instead. Our guide to South Carolina process servers explains the distinction.
What does a process server in Aiken County cost?
The published Routine starting rate for Aiken County is $130. Urgent service costs 1.5 times that, Rush costs double and Same Day Rush costs triple. Georgia-side work, rural eastern-county addresses or a tight deadline can change the plan, and we raise those points before work begins. The final price is always confirmed in writing; the county rate comparison shows neighbors.
Can you serve someone who lives in Augusta but works in Aiken County?
Yes. We can attempt service at the South Carolina workplace if the court's rules and the employer's setting allow it, or deliver in Georgia through our coverage there after confirming that state's server requirements. Both halves stay under one quote and one log. Counsel should choose the method that suits the case before we start.
Where are Aiken County affidavits of service filed?
Common Pleas affidavits go to the Aiken County Clerk of Court, whose mailing address is P.O. Box 583, Aiken 29802, and the county lists the Judicial Center at 109 Park Ave. SE. Family court matters are heard at 109 Park Ave. Federal Aiken division cases are heard in Columbia. Each affidavit is captioned for the court that issued the papers.
Do you serve eviction papers in Aiken County?
Not the rule to vacate as a standard service. The magistrate courts we checked send that rule through the sheriff's office, and only a constable or deputy sheriff carries out a writ of ejectment. We serve a landlord's other papers, such as summonses for unpaid rent or damages and subpoenas for hearing witnesses. Our South Carolina ejectment papers guide explains each stage.
What if the defendant has left South Carolina?
Under S.C. Code 15-9-750, personal service of the summons outside the state is equivalent to publication and is complete on the day of service, without a publication order. We can coordinate that delivery and prepare an affidavit acceptable under SCRCP 4(h). If the person cannot be found anywhere, counsel can review options when a defendant evades service.
Can a certified letter replace a process server in Aiken County?
Sometimes. SCRCP 4(d)(8) allows restricted-delivery certified mail and 4(d)(9) a qualifying commercial delivery service. But mail service supports a default judgment only if the return receipt or delivery record shows the defendant personally accepted it. Attorneys who expect a default often choose hand delivery with a detailed affidavit to avoid that problem.
How fast can papers be served in North Augusta or Aiken?
A Routine assignment usually gets its first attempt within several days. Urgent, Rush and Same Day Rush tiers are priced at 1.5, 2 and 3 times Routine, and Same Day availability depends on the address and when the papers reach us. Share the hearing or filing date and we will confirm in writing what is realistic. See faster service tiers in South Carolina.
Does Delator Field Services have an Aiken County office?
No. Delator Field Services belongs to Delator Group, a Tennessee firm headquartered in Nashville, and keeps no South Carolina office. In Aiken County we coordinate service through vetted servers suited to the court and address involved, with a written price, a logged attempt record and a signed affidavit on every job.
What should an Aiken County request include?
Send the filed summons and complaint, the defendant's full name, every address in South Carolina and Georgia, the employer and shift if known, a description or photo, vehicle details and the deadline. For subpoenas, add the hearing date and courtroom. Self-represented filers can review magistrate claim service basics before sending papers.
