Quick answer
How do I hire a process server in Louisville?
Send the filed papers and the address. We check whether the summons was issued for private delivery or must go to the sheriff, confirm the Jefferson County address, and send the tier and price in writing. Routine service has a published starting rate of $125, and our overview of Kentucky process serving explains how we work across the state.
01Local service landscape
One Metro Government, Dozens of Small Cities, One Set of Courts
Louisville and Jefferson County merged into a single metro government, with the Metro Council formally established in 2003, yet 82 other cities inside the county kept their own status. A defendant in St. Matthews, Shively or Jeffersontown may live under a different city government, but every Jefferson County civil case still runs through the same clerk on West Jefferson Street. We confirm the street address and the filing court before routing, and our Jefferson County countywide page lists the cities we cover, including service in St. Matthews.
Three interstates meet downtown. I-64 crosses east to west, I-65 runs north toward Indiana and south toward Elizabethtown, and I-71 leaves for Cincinnati, while I-264 forms the inner loop and I-265 the outer one. A server who starts at a Highlands bungalow can reach a Middletown office park and an Okolona apartment the same afternoon if the route is planned around the loops. The Kentucky county rate map shows how Jefferson compares with Bullitt and Oldham next door.

02Attorneys and law firms
Support for Louisville Litigators and Counsel From Other States
Louisville is home to the Western District's main courthouse on West Broadway and to a dense concentration of Kentucky law firms. They send us collection suits, injury complaints, commercial disputes and deposition subpoenas, and firms outside Kentucky regularly need a Louisville resident or company served on short notice. Our program for Kentucky attorneys keeps the written quote, the attempt notes and the signed return with a single contact at DFS, and Jeffersontown process service runs on that same system.
We read the papers before dispatch. A Jefferson Circuit Court summons, a federal summons prepared under the joint local rules and a foreign subpoena domesticated through the circuit clerk each take a different path, and we flag problems early, such as a defendant who moved to Bullitt County or a company whose registered agent changed. Counsel elsewhere can review how we handle papers from other states served in Kentucky before sending a file.
03Evasive and hard-to-serve
Shift Workers, Apartment Gates and Doors That Stay Closed
Louisville runs around the clock. UPS Worldport at Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport employs more than 20,000 people, and Ford builds vehicles at the Louisville Assembly Plant on Fern Valley Road and the Kentucky Truck Plant on Chamberlain Lane. A defendant who sorts packages overnight is rarely home at 2 p.m. and may be asleep at 9 a.m., so we time attempts around the shift the client describes. Our notes on serving defendants who avoid the door explain how that planning works.
When a person simply refuses to answer, repeating the same visit accomplishes little. We move attempts to early mornings, evenings and weekends, and Kentucky law permits service on Sundays and holidays under KRS 454.135. Each visit is logged with the time, what was seen and who responded. If personal delivery still fails, counsel can weigh the options described in the guide to defendants who avoid service, including a warning order where the facts support one.
04Family law, landlords and subpoenas
Family Court Papers, Landlord Notices, Small Claims and Witnesses
Dissolution and custody cases in Louisville are filed in Jefferson Circuit Court and heard by its Family Court division at the Judicial Center. Service follows the same Civil Rules as other suits: personal delivery, the clerk's certified mail or, in limited cases, a warning order. Many respondents instead sign a waiver of service and entry of appearance, which counsel may prefer. When a personal handoff is needed, we do it discreetly, and the Kentucky divorce papers service page compares the routes.
Eviction notices are a different matter. Under KRS 383.210 the forcible detainer warrant goes to the sheriff or a constable, and the current AOC-215 notice is addressed to the Sheriff or any Constable, so we never serve it or carry out a warrant of restitution. We can deliver a landlord's pre-suit written notice and serve papers in a separate suit for rent or damages. Small claims up to $2,500 normally go out by clerk certified mail or the sheriff, as our small claims service page explains, and witness subpoenas are covered on the Kentucky subpoena service page.
- Family Court dissolution and custody papers
- Pre-suit landlord notices, not the AOC-215 notice
- Small claims only where the court allows private delivery
- Witness subpoenas under CR 45.03
05Documentation
What a Louisville Proof of Service Shows
A Jefferson summons handed to a private server through CR 4.01(1)(b) is proved by that server's endorsed return, not by a mail receipt. CR 4.03 asks for the proof to be filed promptly, and in any event within the time the defendant has to respond, which CR 12.01 generally sets at 20 days after service. Our Louisville returns state the date, time, address and manner of delivery, and the step-by-step Kentucky service guide shows where the return fits.
If a defendant later claims nobody served them, the field record answers the question: the address, the hour, the person who received the papers and a physical description. Outside Tennessee, Delator may use vetted contract servers, and every one of them works to the same written documentation standard. You can request the attempt notes at any time, and Kentucky same day and rush service produces the same record at a faster pace. Our Kentucky process serving rates by county set the starting figure.
06Kentucky rules
Who May Deliver a Summons in Louisville Under Kentucky Law
Kentucky's Civil Rules give the clerk three options under CR 4.01: certified mail to the addressee only, transfer of the summons to a person other than a mail carrier who is authorized to deliver it, or return of the papers to the filing party to arrange service. KRS 454.140 directs process to the sheriff by default, and KRS 454.145 lets a court appoint a person to serve a particular paper for good cause. No Kentucky statute licenses private process servers, a point our guide to who can serve process in Kentucky covers in more depth.
In practice, that means we confirm with counsel and the Jefferson clerk how the summons will issue and whether private delivery is accepted before we take the job, and we send papers to the sheriff where only an officer may serve them. CR 4.04(2) requires delivery to the defendant personally, or offering the papers if the person refuses, or delivery to an authorized agent. There is no household-member option for a summons. These are plain summaries, not legal advice; read more about Delator Group and its Nashville headquarters.
07Louisville angle
When the Sheriff, the Clerk's Mail or a Private Server Makes Sense
Louisville filers have a real choice. The Jefferson County Sheriff's Process Unit serves civil summonses, subpoenas, garnishments and forcible detainers for $70 per paper, paid by check or money order, and the clerk will mail a summons by certified mail if asked. A private delivery is usually chosen when timing matters, when the defendant keeps odd hours or when counsel wants a detailed attempt log. A process server in Louisville is one option among several, and we will tell you when another route fits better.
Wage garnishment is a good example of a paper that needs a conversation first. The AOC-150 order is issued by the circuit clerk and goes to the employer, and competing orders rank by the date they are served on that employer, but the form does not say who must deliver it. We confirm with counsel how the clerk wants it delivered and documented. For a business served at its Kentucky office, the registered agent service page explains the KRS 14A.4-040 steps, and a Frankfort process server can reach the Secretary of State's Summons Branch.

Process Servers Near Louisville
Louisville papers often leave the county. Defendants south along I-65 in Shepherdsville or Mount Washington are handled through Bullitt County service, and those northeast in La Grange, Crestwood or Prospect go to our Oldham County process servers. Papers bound for the Fort Knox area and Elizabethtown use service in Elizabethtown, and addresses east along I-64 fall under Shelbyville process service. Whichever county the defendant calls home, the job keeps the written quote, the dated attempt log and the signed return that a Louisville serve would carry, so your file looks the same from one court to the next.
FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Can any adult serve papers in Louisville?
For subpoenas, generally yes: CR 45.03 lets any person over 18 serve one anywhere in Kentucky. A summons depends on how the clerk issued it under CR 4.01, because process is directed to the sheriff by default under KRS 454.140 unless the clerk transfers it to an authorized person or returns it to the filing party. We confirm the route with counsel before we accept the job.
How much does a process server in Louisville cost?
Jefferson County's published Routine starting rate is $125, which makes Urgent $188, Rush $250 and Same Day Rush $375. The actual figure depends on the address, the document and the deadline, and we put it in writing before anyone is sent. The Jefferson County Sheriff charges $70 per paper, so we will say when that route makes more sense for you.
Can papers be left with a family member in Louisville?
Not for a summons. CR 4.04(2) requires personal delivery to the defendant, or offering the papers if the person refuses, or delivery to an agent authorized by appointment or by law. The family-member rule people sometimes mention applies only when an officer serves a forcible detainer notice under KRS 454.030. Our return records exactly who received the papers.
Do you serve eviction notices in Louisville?
No. KRS 383.210 directs the forcible detainer warrant to the sheriff or any constable, and the AOC-215 notice is addressed the same way. We do not carry out warrants of restitution either. We can deliver a landlord's pre-suit written notice where the lease and the law allow it, and serve summonses in separate suits. The Kentucky eviction service guide explains the steps.
How long does a Louisville defendant have to answer?
A Louisville defendant generally gets 20 days from service to file an answer under CR 12.01, a deadline CR 4.02 requires the summons to print. The AOC-105 civil summons counts the days from the day after delivery. Proof of service should be filed within that same window under CR 4.03. Your attorney can confirm the exact date for your case.
Which courthouse gets the Louisville return?
The court where the case was filed decides that. Jefferson Circuit and District Court records are kept by the circuit clerk at the Louis D. Brandeis Hall of Justice, 600 W. Jefferson St., while Circuit and Family Court sit at the Judicial Center next door. Federal returns go to the Western District file. We name the issuing court on every return. Firms with many Louisville filings can see the DFS service model for law firms too.
What if the Louisville defendant cannot be found?
We report each failed attempt and keep a dated log. If a defendant has left the county to avoid service or is concealing themselves, CR 4.05 allows a warning order on an affidavit, and the clerk appoints a warning order attorney who reports within 50 days. The defendant is deemed summoned 30 days after entry. See how warning order attorneys work.
Can you serve someone at UPS Worldport or a Ford plant?
Serving at a large employer depends on site access and on whether the defendant can be reached there without disrupting the workplace. Many plant workers are easier to serve at home if attempts follow their shift. Tell us the shift and the work location, and we plan the visits around it, documenting each one. Your attorney decides whether a workplace attempt is appropriate.
Do Louisville witnesses get paid for a subpoena?
Under KRS 421.015, a witness who lives in a county other than the one where they are subpoenaed is allowed the mileage that state employees receive under KRS 44.060. Kentucky has no general per-day witness fee statute that we found. Tell us where the witness lives, and the Louisville-area countywide service notes and our return will reflect what was tendered.
Do you serve federal papers in Louisville?
Yes. The Western District of Kentucky sits at the Gene Snyder U.S. Courthouse, 601 W. Broadway, and federal summonses follow Federal Rule 4 and the joint local rules. We serve federal papers anywhere in Jefferson County and return proof formatted for the federal file. Contact Delator Field Services with the case number and deadline to begin.
