Quick answer
How do I hire a process server in Aurora?
Start by sending the filed papers and the Aurora address. Because Aurora spans three counties, we first confirm whether the address is in Arapahoe, Adams or Douglas County, then confirm the tier and price in writing. Routine service in Arapahoe and Adams counties starts at $125, and the county rate map for Colorado shows Douglas County's rate.
01Local service landscape
One City, Three Counties and Three Judicial Districts
Aurora had an estimated 410,000 residents in 2025, making it Colorado's third-largest city, and it crosses Arapahoe, Adams and Douglas county lines. Each county belongs to a different judicial district: Arapahoe is the 18th, Adams the 17th and Douglas the 23rd. A street address alone does not tell you which court has venue or which sheriff serves there, so we confirm the county of every Aurora address before scheduling. North-side papers often go through Adams County process service.
The city stretches from older blocks along Colfax Avenue near the Denver line out to new subdivisions on the eastern plains, where addresses may be missing from maps or still under construction. Servers expect apartment complexes with call boxes, gated communities in the southeast, and long arterial drives between neighborhoods. When an address cannot be confirmed, our Aurora investigators check current residence records before a server goes out.
- Arapahoe, Adams and Douglas County addresses
- Older Colfax corridor blocks near Denver
- New subdivisions on the eastern edge
- Apartment call boxes and gated entries
02Attorneys and law firms
Service for Counsel Filing in Centennial, Brighton or Castle Rock
An Aurora defendant can be sued in Centennial, Brighton or Castle Rock depending on the address and the claim. Attorneys send us collection suits, motor vehicle claims, construction disputes, HOA actions and employment cases, and we read each summons for the issuing court before quoting. Through our Colorado attorney program, one coordinator handles the price, the attempts and the return, so firms do not have to manage separate vendors for each county.
Counsel outside Colorado often discover the county split only after a first attempt fails. We flag it at intake. If the summons came from the wrong county's court, that is a question for counsel, not the server, but knowing early saves time. When the defendant has moved between Aurora's counties or out of state, lost contact locates and witness research for litigation can run while service proceeds.
03Evasive and hard-to-serve
Hospital Shifts, Base Schedules and Defendants Who Stay Out of Sight
The Anschutz Medical Campus on Aurora's north side draws thousands of hospital and research employees on rotating shifts, and Buckley Space Force Base adds military and contractor schedules. Many Aurora residents also commute to Denver or the Tech Center. Servers spread attempts across early mornings, evenings and weekends, log each visit with the result, and respect hospital security rules rather than trying to serve inside clinical areas.
Some defendants avoid the door on purpose, moving between relatives' homes or changing apartments within the city. After reasonable attempts, a Delator investigator can take over the search through finding evasive defendants. The same attempt log supports a motion for court-ordered substituted service under C.R.C.P. 4(f), which requires the server's affidavit describing what was tried. Collection counsel often pair service with locating judgment debtors.
04Family law, evictions and subpoenas
Family Law, FED, Small Claims and Subpoenas in Aurora
Aurora divorce and parenting-time cases are generally heard in the district court of the county where the case is filed. The respondent usually must be personally served unless they join the petition or waive service, and the automatic temporary injunction under C.R.S. 14-10-107 takes effect against them on service. We confirm identity before delivery and note the exact time. Counsel tracing finances can see our Colorado divorce asset guide, and parenting-time investigations address custody evidence.
Aurora has a large rental market, and FED cases are filed in the county court for the property's county. A residential notice for nonpayment generally gives 10 days under C.R.S. 13-40-104, and the summons must be served or posted at least seven days before the appearance date. Only the sheriff executes a writ of restitution; Delator never performs removals. Small claims papers must reach the defendant at least 15 days before trial, and rental applicant screening helps landlords.
- Dissolution and parenting-time petitions
- Eviction summonses in the correct county court
- Small claims notices with 15 days' lead time
- Witness subpoenas for Centennial and Brighton
05Documentation
The Record Behind an Aurora Affidavit
Our Aurora returns state the server's age and non-party status, the documents, the county and the date, time, place and manner of service, on the pattern of the Judicial Branch's JDF 98 form. Because county matters so much here, every return names the county where service occurred. A field log of every attempt supports it. Serves may be carried out by vetted servers Delator contracts with, all held to one written standard.
If a defendant argues service was improper, the log shows whether delivery was personal, to a family member at least 18 at the home, to a listed workplace contact, or after a refusal. Colorado allows proof by a sworn or unsworn declaration under C.R.C.P. 4(h), so no notary is required by the rule, although small claims forms ask for one. For contested facts, Colorado litigation consulting and employee theft investigations are available.
06Colorado rules
How Colorado Service Rules Apply in Aurora
Any person who is at least 18 and not a party can generally serve a Colorado summons under C.R.C.P. 4(d), and no license is required. Under C.R.C.P. 4(e)(1), service can be made personally, at the person's usual place of abode with a family member 18 or older, at the usual workplace with a supervisor or other listed staff member, or on an authorized agent. The Colorado service of process overview explains each method.
C.R.C.P. 4(m) generally requires service within 63 days after filing, and a defendant generally answers within 21 days, or 35 if served outside Colorado or by publication. Publication is limited to property and status cases by court order and runs once a week for five weeks. County court cases follow C.R.C.P. 304. These summaries are not legal advice. The Colorado guide to serving papers gives more detail, and Colorado PI legal limits explain field rules.

Why Aurora's 2025 District Change Matters for Service
Until January 14, 2025, Arapahoe, Douglas, Elbert and Lincoln counties shared the 18th Judicial District. On that date Colorado created the 23rd District for Douglas, Elbert and Lincoln, leaving the 18th as Arapahoe County only. Older templates, letterhead and case captions can still mention the former arrangement. We check the issuing court and case number on every Aurora packet, and southeast-side papers often go through service in Douglas County.
Aurora's light rail R Line runs north and south through the city, and many renters live near its stations, so a defendant's commute can be as useful as their home address for planning attempts. Servers do not serve on platforms or trains, but they schedule around known routines. Businesses dealing with internal disputes rather than lawsuits can ask about workplace theft investigations, and our Centennial investigators cover the Arapahoe County seat area.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a process server in Aurora need a license?
No. Colorado has no licensing program for process servers; under C.R.C.P. 4(d), a summons can generally be served by any non-party adult 18 or older. Delator Field Services applies one written documentation standard instead. Our guide on vetting providers in Colorado explains what to check before hiring anyone for field work.
How much does it cost to serve papers in Aurora?
Routine service has a published starting rate of $125 in Arapahoe and Adams counties and $130 in Douglas County. On the Arapahoe side, Urgent is $188, Rush $250 and Same Day Rush $375. Address, deadline and the number of people served set the final figure, which we put in writing before work begins.
How do I know which county an Aurora address is in?
Check the county assessor records or ask us at intake. Most of Aurora is in Arapahoe County, the north side is in Adams County, and a small southeast portion is in Douglas County. We confirm the county for every address before quoting, because it determines the court, the sheriff and the rate.
Is Arapahoe County still in the 18th Judicial District?
Yes. Since January 14, 2025, the 18th Judicial District covers Arapahoe County only. Douglas, Elbert and Lincoln counties moved to the new 23rd Judicial District, based at the Douglas County Courthouse in Castle Rock. Papers for Aurora addresses in Douglas County therefore generally issue from the 23rd District, and older captions naming the 18th deserve a second look by counsel.
Can papers be left with a relative in Aurora?
Generally yes, if the relative is a member of the person's family, is 18 or older, and the papers are left at the person's usual place of abode, under C.R.C.P. 4(e)(1). A non-family roommate or houseguest generally does not qualify. Our affidavit records the recipient's name or description and relationship.
What happens if an Aurora defendant cannot be served?
Counsel can ask the court for substituted service under C.R.C.P. 4(f), supported by the server's affidavit describing the attempts and why they failed. The court must find due diligence and that the proposed method is reasonably calculated to give notice. Our attempt log is written with that motion in mind, and Colorado missing person resources can help locate the person.
Can you serve someone at the Anschutz Medical Campus?
We can attempt service at a workplace where security allows a visitor to reach the person, but we do not enter clinical or restricted areas. C.R.C.P. 4(e)(1) also generally allows leaving papers with a supervisor or human resources representative at the usual workplace. We record exactly who accepted the papers and where.
How do you serve an Aurora company?
Through its registered agent on file with the Colorado Secretary of State, or an officer, manager or general partner. Under C.R.S. 7-90-704, if the agent cannot be served with reasonable diligence, certified or registered mail to the principal address is generally available; the Secretary of State is not a substitute agent. Business partner vetting is a separate service.
Do you serve papers in Centennial and Bennett too?
Yes. Centennial is in Arapahoe County, where Routine service starts at $125. Bennett straddles Adams and Arapahoe counties, both of which also start at $125, so we confirm which side an address is on. The Arapahoe County Justice Center itself is in Centennial, and our Parker investigators cover the nearby Douglas County towns.
Is Delator Group located in Aurora?
No. Delator Group is a licensed Tennessee private investigation firm headquartered in Nashville, and it has no office in Colorado. It coordinates service in Aurora through vetted servers held to one documentation standard and works to Tennessee's licensing standard in every state. The Colorado investigations hub explains the firm's investigative work in the state.
