01Local service landscape
Serving Papers in Lewiston and Nez Perce County
Lewiston sits where the Clearwater River joins the Snake, with a 2024 population estimate near 34,700 inside a county of about 42,900. Most of our addresses are in the city and the Orchards, with the rest scattered through Lapwai, Culdesac, Peck and ranch country along the river breaks. The county unveiled a new courthouse in 2025, so older filings may carry outdated building details. Each address gets its own written quote under our Idaho process serving program.
Roads define the schedule here. US 12 begins at the Washington line in Lewiston and heads east up the Clearwater, while US 95 climbs more than 1,900 feet in five miles on the Lewiston Hill grade toward Moscow. Winter weather on those grades can slow a second attempt, and we plan around it rather than promise what the road will not allow. A current-address skip trace is the first step when the address is old, and our county rate map explains distance tiers.
- Lewiston, the Orchards and the river neighborhoods
- Lapwai, Culdesac and Peck
- US 12 and US 95 rural routes
- Defendants who live or work across the river
02Attorneys and law firms
Support for Lewiston Counsel and Firms Filing From Elsewhere
The Second Judicial District covers Clearwater, Idaho, Latah, Lewis and Nez Perce counties, and the district's trial court administrator is based in Lewiston. Local firms handle a mix of injury claims, commercial and contract disputes, timber and agricultural matters, and family law. Firms in Boise, Spokane or out of state often need a Lewiston defendant served without making the trip, and our Idaho attorney support handles the quote, the log and the affidavit through one contact.
Because north-central Idaho runs on Pacific time while Boise runs on Mountain, we state the time zone on every attempt entry and every scheduling message. That small detail prevents confusion when a hearing notice, a deposition and a service deadline involve offices in two zones. For matters that need fact work beyond delivery, our Lewiston investigators and consulting for litigation teams work under the same engagement.
03Evasive and hard-to-serve
Hard-to-Serve Defendants in the Lewiston Valley
The most common problem in Lewiston is not hiding, it is the state line. A defendant can rent in Clarkston, Washington, work in Lewiston and visit family in Lapwai, and each location carries different rules. When attempts at the Idaho address keep missing, our servers vary their times, note vehicles and plates, and record what neighbors say, which builds the diligence record counsel may need if another method becomes necessary.
If the defendant has left the valley, Delator investigators can run an evasive person search before more attempts are spent. For people who have moved and simply lost touch with a case, a lost-contact locate is often faster and cheaper. Short surveillance to confirm a routine is available when the address is right but the timing never is. We quote each option before any work starts.
04Family law, evictions, small claims, subpoenas
Family Law, Evictions, Small Claims and Subpoenas in Nez Perce County
Divorce, custody and support papers are heard in the magistrate division and generally served under I.R.F.L.P. 204, which allows personal delivery, abode service with a resident at least 18, or delivery to an authorized agent. Protection orders are normally sent to law enforcement for service unless the petitioner chooses a private server. We confirm identity, avoid public scenes and record who received the papers. Parents can review our guide on investigators in Idaho custody cases.
Eviction timing is tight under Idaho Code 6-310: trial is generally set within 12 days of filing in nonpayment cases, and the summons, complaint and trial notice must be served at least five days before trial. Small claims reach $15,000 as amended in 2026, and the court can mail small claims papers on request. Subpoenas may be served by any adult non-party, with fee and mileage tendered if requested. Our Idaho paper-serving guide explains each step.
- Divorce, custody and support papers
- Unlawful detainer summonses and trial notices
- Small claims papers up to $15,000
- Deposition, hearing and trial subpoenas
05Documentation and challenges
When Service in Lewiston Is Questioned
Proof of service under I.R.C.P. 4(g)(1) generally must be written, identify the documents and state the manner, date and place of service. Anyone other than an officer files an affidavit confirming they are over 18 and describing the service. Our affidavits are drafted from the attempt log kept in the field, with Pacific time stamps, so the record lines up with phone logs and other evidence if a defendant later disputes it. That standard applies to every job under Delator's documentation rules.
When abode service is used, the log describes the adult who accepted and the facts showing they lived there. If a motion to set aside service is filed, Delator leadership can walk counsel through the record, and the server can give a sworn account where needed. The court may also allow amendment of proof under Rule 4(g)(2). Questions before the first attempt can go through our contact form.
06Idaho service rules
Idaho's Rules for Serving Papers, Explained Simply
Idaho generally lets an officer authorized by law, or any person over 18 who is not a party, serve process under I.R.C.P. 4(c)(2), and it does not license process servers. Individuals may be served by personal delivery, at their dwelling through a resident at least 18, or through an authorized agent. Businesses are served through an officer or managing or general agent, with certified mail available under 4(d)(3)(C) when the designated agent cannot be found. Our guide to what investigators may do in Idaho explains where service ends and investigation begins.
Rule 4(b)(2) generally requires dismissal without prejudice of a defendant not served within 182 days after filing unless the court extends the time for good cause, and Rule 12 gives 21 days to answer. Publication under Idaho Code 5-508 and 5-509 runs once a week for four consecutive weeks. On reservation land, service and jurisdiction may turn on tribal law, the parties and the land status, so we confirm the method with counsel, and with the tribal court where needed, before any attempt. Our early case consulting can help counsel organize the facts those questions turn on.
07A Lewiston angle
One Valley, Two States and Two Time Zones in a Day's Drive
Lewiston and Clarkston face each other across the Snake River, and plenty of people cross the bridges daily. Papers issued by an Idaho court do not automatically reach a Washington address, and the rules that apply there are different. When a request includes a Clarkston address, we say in writing whether and how we can coordinate it, and we ask counsel to confirm the method before we quote. Nothing is attempted until that answer is clear.
The second complication is the clock. Lewiston keeps Pacific time, but a client in Boise or Pocatello works on Mountain time, and a deadline written as 5 p.m. can mean two different moments. We note the zone on every entry. Files that continue north go through Latah County process serving and service in Coeur d'Alene, and the multistate pricing map covers other states.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Lewiston process server need a license?
No. Idaho does not license process servers. Under I.R.C.P. 4(c)(2), service may generally be made by an officer authorized by law or any person over 18 who is not a party. Delator Field Services applies one written documentation standard to every serve, described on our process serving overview for Idaho.
What does service in Lewiston cost?
Routine service in Nez Perce County has a published starting rate of $125. Faster tiers scale from that number: Urgent by 1.5, Rush by 2 and Same Day Rush by 3. The final price depends on the address, deadline and documents, and it is confirmed in writing before any attempt. All counties appear on the Idaho rate finder.
Can you serve someone who lives in Clarkston, Washington?
Service in another state depends on the statute or rule that authorizes it and on the other state's requirements. Tell us the Washington address when you request a quote. We will say in writing whether we can coordinate it before you pay, and your attorney should confirm that the method is valid for your case.
Is Lewiston on Pacific or Mountain time?
Lewiston and the rest of Nez Perce County are on Pacific time, like most of north and north-central Idaho, while Boise and southern Idaho use Mountain time. We record every attempt with the time zone, which helps when a hearing, deposition or deadline involves offices in both zones. Clarkston, across the river, keeps Pacific time as well.
Can papers be left with a family member?
Often. In Idaho, I.R.C.P. 4(d)(1)(B) generally permits leaving copies with an adult resident, 18 or older, at the defendant's home. A guest or neighbor does not qualify. Whether to use abode service is a decision for your attorney, and our affidavit describes the person who accepted and why they appeared to live there.
What about service in Lapwai or on reservation land?
The Nez Perce Tribe's government is seated in Lapwai, and service on reservation land may be governed by tribal law depending on the parties, the land and the claim. Before any attempt, we settle the method with counsel and, if needed, the tribal court. We do not give jurisdictional advice.
What if the defendant has left the area?
We stop spending attempts at a dead address and tell you. Delator investigators can run a missing defendant search and then coordinate service wherever the person is found. Where diligent searching still fails, counsel may ask the court for publication under Idaho Code 5-508, and our log documents the search.
Does Delator have an office in Lewiston?
No. Delator Group is based in Nashville, with no Idaho office. Delator Field Services coordinates Lewiston-area work, and a contracted, vetted server may complete the serve under Delator's logging and affidavit requirements. Read about Delator Group. We can explain the arrangement on any job before you commit. Nothing about that changes the affidavit standard.
Which federal court covers Lewiston?
The U.S. District Court for the District of Idaho places Nez Perce County in its Central Division (Moscow), though the court's contact page lists clerk's offices only in Boise, Coeur d'Alene and Pocatello. Federal summonses follow Federal Rule of Civil Procedure 4, and our affidavit states how, when and where service occurred.
What should I send with a Lewiston request?
Send the filed papers, the person's full name, every known address on both sides of the river, a photo or description, vehicle details and the deadline with its time zone. For subpoenas, include any fee check. People without a lawyer can first read how to serve legal papers in Idaho. Noting the time zone on your deadline avoids a costly misunderstanding.
