Quick answer

How do I hire a process server in Oldham County, Kentucky?

Send the issued summons and complaint, every address you have and the deadline. We confirm with the clerk how the summons was issued and whether private delivery fits, put the tier and price in writing, assign a server and return a signed record. Oldham County's published Routine starting rate is $125, and our Kentucky pricing map compares other counties.

01Local service landscape

Commuter Suburbs, Horse Country and the Ohio River Bluffs

Oldham County had an estimated 70,986 residents in 2025, and most of its growth followed Interstate 71, which by the early 1970s linked the county directly to downtown Louisville. Today the county is often described as the wealthiest in Kentucky. Incorporated cities include La Grange, Crestwood, Goshen, Pewee Valley, Orchard Grass Hills, River Bluff and part of Prospect. Our Kentucky statewide process serving program applies one written standard across all of them.

The geography is a mix. Planned neighborhoods near Crestwood and Pewee Valley have short blocks and visible front doors, while the north of the county runs to wooded lots and long private drives above the Ohio River, which forms the border with Indiana. Westport, a river settlement founded in 1800, once served as the county seat. We review each address before the first attempt, our Jefferson County servers handle anything across the line, and every county's figure appears on our Kentucky service rate table.

02Attorneys and law firms

Louisville Firms, Local Practitioners and the 12th Circuit

Most litigation touching Oldham County starts in Louisville, where many residents work, but plenty is filed in La Grange itself. Typical matters include business and partnership disputes, construction and contractor claims, real estate and HOA cases, estate disputes and family law. Our service program for Kentucky attorneys gives counsel one contact for the written quote, the attempt log and the completed return, without a retainer quietly drawn down.

Before an attempt we look for the usual traps: a Prospect address that sits in Jefferson County, a defendant who commutes downtown and is reachable only early or late, or a closely held company whose registered agent is the owner at home. A served defendant generally has 20 days to answer under CR 12.01. Firms filing across several states can compare figures on the multistate rate map, and counsel outside Kentucky can follow our process for papers from other states.

03Evasive and hard-to-serve

Long Driveways, Controlled Entrances and Commuter Hours

Evasion in Oldham County rarely looks dramatic. A defendant leaves for Louisville before dawn, returns after dark, and lets a video doorbell answer for them in between. Some properties sit behind farm gates or at the end of long private lanes. We time attempts for when people are realistically home, including evenings and weekends where counsel agrees, and Kentucky's KRS 454.135 gives no Sunday or holiday exemption from civil process. Our page on serving defendants who resist explains the plan, and faster service tiers cover a close hearing.

Because a Kentucky summons cannot be left with a spouse or housekeeper, the log has to show real attempts to reach the defendant. When those attempts fail and counsel believes the person is concealing themselves, CR 4.05 allows a warning order on an affidavit, and the clerk, not the plaintiff, appoints the warning order attorney under CR 4.07. Our warning order attorney explainer lays out the general sequence.

04Family law, evictions, small claims, subpoenas

Family Cases, Landlord Matters, Small Claims and Subpoenas

Divorce and custody cases are filed in the Oldham County Family Court division at the Judicial Center. A respondent may be served personally, by the clerk's certified mail, or may sign a waiver of service and entry of appearance. In households with children, timing and setting matter, so we talk with counsel about the least disruptive place to deliver. The general steps appear in our guide to serving Kentucky divorce papers.

Oldham County appears on a dated 2015 list of localities that adopted Kentucky's Uniform Residential Landlord and Tenant Act, which, where it applies, generally sets a 7-day written notice for unpaid rent; landlords should confirm current status. The forcible detainer notice itself is directed to the sheriff or a constable under KRS 383.210, so we do not serve it or carry out warrants of restitution; the forcible detainer walkthrough explains why. Small claims up to $2,500 go out by the clerk's certified mail or the sheriff. Our Kentucky subpoena page covers witness papers under CR 45.03.

05Documentation and challenges

Records Built for the Day Someone Disputes Service

When the clerk transfers a summons for delivery under CR 4.01(1)(b), the server's endorsed return is the proof of service. CR 4.03 asks that proof be filed promptly, and in any event within the time the defendant has to respond. We send the completed return quickly so your office can file it at 100 West Main Street with time to spare.

Each return is written from notes taken during the attempt, including the time, the approach to the property, who answered and what was said. If the defendant refuses the papers, CR 4.04(2) treats an offer as delivery, and the record says exactly how the offer was made. A defendant who later claims the papers never arrived meets a dated, specific account. Questions about a contested serve can start on our contact page, and about Delator Group explains the organization behind the record.

06Kentucky service rules

What Kentucky Law Says About Serving a Summons Here

Under CR 4.01, once the clerk issues the summons, the plaintiff chooses among the clerk's certified mail, transfer to a person other than a mail carrier who is authorized to deliver it, or return to the filing party to arrange service. KRS 454.140 directs process to the sheriff, and KRS 454.145 lets a court, for good cause, appoint a person to serve a particular paper. The Kentucky who-may-serve guide explains each option in more depth.

Kentucky does not license private process servers, so DFS never describes a server as holding a Kentucky credential. Before accepting an Oldham County serve, we confirm how the clerk issued the summons and whether private delivery or an appointment is needed, and where only an officer may serve, the papers go to the sheriff. Corporations are generally served through an officer, managing agent or registered agent. This overview is not legal advice; our Kentucky service walkthrough adds detail.

07An Oldham County angle

Defendants in State Custody Near La Grange

The Kentucky State Reformatory, run by the Kentucky Department of Corrections, sits in unincorporated Oldham County near La Grange. Civil cases sometimes name a person held there, or require a subpoena for someone in custody. Service inside a correctional facility depends on that facility's procedures, so we never assume access. We work with counsel on whether the facility has a process for receiving civil papers and what proof the court will expect, and our Shelbyville service team helps with matters that reach the next county south.

Custody cases also raise timing issues. A defendant who is transferred or released can change addresses quickly, and an affidavit about the person's status may matter before any default. Where personal delivery is not workable, counsel may consider other routes the rules allow, such as the clerk's certified mail. We document what was tried and when, so your attorney can choose a path with a full record. Our Frankfort court paper delivery team covers the capital, where many state agencies are headquartered.

Process Servers Near Oldham County

Oldham County shares a long line with Jefferson County, and many cases start in one and finish in the other. Defendants who work downtown are reached through our Louisville process servers, and those in the inner suburbs through St. Matthews service of process. The east end and its business parks are covered by our Jeffersontown court paper team. Every location uses the same written quote, dated attempts and signed return, so a case that crosses the county line keeps one consistent record from intake to filing.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a private server deliver a summons in Oldham County?

Kentucky's rules let the clerk transfer a summons to a person authorized to deliver it, or return it to the filing party to arrange service, and no statute licenses private process servers. Practice can differ between courts, so we confirm how the Oldham County clerk issued the summons before any attempt. Our Kentucky service hub has the statewide picture.

How much does a process server in Oldham County charge?

Oldham County's published Routine starting rate is $125. Urgent service runs one and a half times that, Rush twice and Same Day Rush three times. Gated estates or acreage may need extra planning, which we raise before work starts. The final price is always confirmed in writing, and the Kentucky county rates page lets you compare neighboring counties.

Where are Oldham County returns filed?

State court returns go to the Circuit Court Clerk at the Oldham County Judicial Center, 100 West Main Street in La Grange, which keeps Circuit and District records. Federal papers for county defendants usually belong to the Western District courthouse at 601 West Broadway in Louisville. We prepare each return for the court that issued the papers.

Can papers be left with someone at the door?

Not for a Kentucky summons. CR 4.04(2) generally requires delivery to the individual, an offer if the person refuses, or delivery to an agent authorized by appointment or by law. Leaving papers with a spouse, nanny or housekeeper is not an option for a private server. If personal delivery stalls, your attorney can review the log and consider the clerk's certified mail.

Can you serve someone held at the Kentucky State Reformatory?

Service inside a state prison depends on the facility's procedures, so we never promise access. We coordinate with counsel on whether the Department of Corrections facility near La Grange has a way to receive civil papers and what proof the court expects. Where in-person delivery is not workable, counsel may consider the clerk's certified mail or another route the rules allow.

Do you serve eviction papers in Oldham County?

Not the forcible detainer notice. KRS 383.210 directs that warrant to the sheriff or any constable, and the AOC-215 form is addressed to them; putting a landlord back in possession is likewise reserved to those officers. We can deliver a landlord's written pre-suit notice where the lease allows and serve papers in a separate suit. Our Kentucky eviction papers page explains the split.

What happens if the defendant keeps avoiding service?

Each attempt is logged with dates, times and observations. If the defendant has left the county to avoid service, is concealing themselves or has an unknown residence, CR 4.05 allows a warning order on an affidavit. The clerk appoints a warning order attorney, and the defendant is generally deemed summoned on the 30th day after entry. Our avoided service guide explains more.

How fast can papers be served in La Grange or Crestwood?

Routine service generally begins with a first attempt within several days. Urgent, Rush and Same Day Rush move faster at 1.5, 2 and 3 times the Routine rate, and Same Day depends on the address and time of day. Tell us the hearing or filing date and we will confirm in writing what is realistic. See Kentucky same day and rush delivery.

Is Delator Field Services based in Oldham County?

No. We work out of Delator Group's Nashville headquarters; DFS, its process serving division, keeps no Kentucky office. For La Grange and the surrounding suburbs, we match each job to a server suited to the issuing court and pair it with a written price, a running attempt log and a signed return.

What should I send with an Oldham County request?

Send the issued summons and complaint, the defendant's full name, every known address including any work site in Louisville, a description or photo, vehicle details and the deadline. Note any gate or access information you are lawfully able to share. Self-represented filers can review small claims service options in Kentucky before submitting a request.
