Quick answer
How do I hire a process server in Richmond?
Send the filed papers and the address. We first confirm the address is in the City of Richmond, not Henrico, Chesterfield or Richmond County, then identify the issuing court and send the price in writing. City addresses start at a published Routine rate of $125, and our Henrico County service page covers the suburbs north and west.
01Local service landscape
A Capital City Split by the River and Ringed by Suburbs
The James River runs through the middle of Richmond, and the city's courts follow that split. Most civil filings and returns go to the John Marshall Courts Building on North 9th Street, while the general district court also sits south of the river at the Marsh Manchester Courts Building on Hull Street. A warrant in debt for a Forest Hill tenant and one for a Church Hill homeowner may return to different buildings, so we read the papers closely. Our Virginia locality rate map shows the city alongside its neighbors.
Richmond is an independent city, so Henrico County wraps around it to the north, east and west and Chesterfield County sits to the south, yet neither county includes any part of the city. Interstate 95 runs north and south through downtown, and I-64 heads west toward Charlottesville and east toward the coast. Before quoting, we confirm the locality so the case does not end up being priced or returned as a Chesterfield County serve by mistake.
- Courts north and south of the James
- Henrico and Chesterfield surround the city
- I-95 and I-64 cross downtown
- Federal courthouse at 701 E. Broad St.
02Attorneys and law firms
Working With Richmond Firms, State Agencies and Federal Counsel
Richmond's legal community covers state government, regulated industries and the Eastern District's Richmond Division at 701 East Broad Street. Firms send us circuit court complaints, motions for judgment, commercial suits and subpoenas for deposition witnesses. Many Virginia-wide cases involve parties who live in the city even when the suit is filed elsewhere in the Commonwealth. Our Virginia program for attorneys and firms keeps quotes, updates and returns under one DFS contact.
Two of Virginia's statutory agents for service are reached in Richmond, but neither is a field serve. When a corporation or LLC has no reachable registered agent, two copies of the process go to the Clerk of the State Corporation Commission, who mails them and files a certificate of compliance; the fee is $30 per defendant. For a nonresident or a defendant who cannot be found after due diligence, Va. Code 8.01-329 allows delivery to the Secretary of the Commonwealth's office with an affidavit. We explain when those routes apply on our registered agent service page and in our guide for out-of-state papers.
03Evasive and hard-to-serve
Rowhouses, Student Blocks and Downtown Lofts
Much of Richmond's housing sits close together: rowhouses in the Fan and Church Hill, converted warehouse lofts in Shockoe Bottom and Scott's Addition, and student apartments near Virginia Commonwealth University. Shared entrances and buzzer panels make it easy for a defendant to stay out of reach. Our servers rotate visits across early morning, evening and Saturday hours, note who answered at each attempt, and never enter a building they are not allowed into. The Virginia hard-to-serve service explains the scheduling.
Sunday service is not an option because Va. Code 8.01-289 bars serving civil process that day, so the work fits into six days. Students and young renters also move often, sometimes to Henrico or Chesterfield apartments just past the city line. When the log shows a defendant has moved, we report it promptly and quote the new locality, such as service in Hanover County to the north. Counsel deciding on a next step can read what to do when a Virginia defendant avoids service.
04Family law, landlords and subpoenas
Family Law, Unlawful Detainer, Small Claims and Subpoenas
A Richmond divorce complaint is filed in the 13th Circuit at the John Marshall Courts Building, and custody, visitation and support start in the city's Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court. Va. Code 20-99.1:1 allows a defendant to accept divorce service by signing before a notary or clerk, and counsel often asks for that first. When a signature is not coming, we arrange a quiet personal delivery. See the Virginia divorce service page for the alternatives.
Landlords filing in the general district court can have the unlawful detainer summons served by a private server under Va. Code 8.01-126, so long as it is delivered no later than 10 days ahead of the return day. After a judgment, the sheriff executes the writ of eviction and gives the tenant at least 72 hours' notice; we have no role in that. Small claims cases up to $5,000 and attorney-issued subpoenas round out the docket, and the Virginia subpoena page and the eviction guide for Virginia give more detail.
- Divorce in the 13th Circuit
- Custody and support in J&DR
- Unlawful detainer summons, never the writ
- Attorney-issued subpoenas with lead time

Building a Return the Richmond Clerk Will Accept
Virginia's return requirements for private servers come from Va. Code 8.01-325. Our Richmond returns include the server's affidavit of qualifications, the date and manner of service, the name of the person served, a note that service was made by a private server, and the server's name, address and telephone number. The return reaches the clerk within 72 hours unless the court sets another schedule, and weekend or holiday deadlines roll to the next business day. The Virginia service-of-process guide shows where that fits.
Every attempt also goes into a dated log with the time, the entrance used and what was seen or said. If a defendant later moves to quash, counsel has specifics instead of a general recollection. Outside Tennessee, serves may be carried out by vetted servers Delator contracts with, and all of them follow the same written documentation standard. When a hearing is days away, Virginia rush and same day service keeps that standard, and the multistate rate map shows tier pricing.
06Virginia rules
How Virginia's Service Statutes Work in the Capital
Va. Code 8.01-293 authorizes the sheriff and any person 18 or older who is not a party or interested in the case to serve process; a private process server is such a person serving for a fee. Virginia has no statewide license for the work. Officers alone may execute writs of possession, levy on property or serve a capias or show cause order, and we do not offer those acts. Our guide on who may serve Virginia process lays out each exception.
Service on an individual follows Va. Code 8.01-296: personal delivery first, then delivery to a family member 16 or older living at the usual abode who is not a guest and is told what the papers are, and then posting at the main entrance. When papers are posted, the filing party or its attorney mails a copy and files a certificate of mailing at least 10 days before a default judgment. The Virginia posted service guide covers that step, and service generally must occur within twelve months of filing under Va. Code 8.01-275.1.
07Richmond angle
City of Richmond, Richmond County and a Richmond Mailing Address
The word Richmond can mean three different things on a case file. The City of Richmond is the independent city served by the 13th Circuit. Richmond County is a separate rural county in the Northern Neck, part of the 15th Circuit, with its own clerk and a different published rate. And a Richmond, VA mailing address may belong to a home in Henrico or Chesterfield County, whose courts sit on East Parham Road and Courthouse Road. We sort that out before quoting.
Getting the locality right matters for more than price. The return goes to the clerk of the court that issued the papers, while service itself happens wherever the defendant is found, and counsel needs to know which sheriff would have jurisdiction if a private serve fails. A process server in Richmond who checks the locality first prevents a quote, a return or a follow-up request from going to the wrong place. If the address is in the counties, Henrico process service and our statewide Virginia page pick up from there.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Who can serve papers in the City of Richmond?
Under Va. Code 8.01-293, the sheriff or any person 18 or older who is not a party and has no interest in the case may serve process. If that adult is paid for the work, Virginia's term for the role is private process server. No license is required in Virginia, but the return must include an affidavit of the server's qualifications.
How much does a process server in Richmond cost?
For the City of Richmond, the published Routine starting rate is $125, which puts Urgent at $188, Rush at $250 and Same Day Rush at $375. Richmond County in the Northern Neck is priced separately. Your final figure depends on the papers and the deadline, and we confirm it in writing before a server is assigned.
Is my Richmond address in the city or the county?
A Richmond, VA mailing address can belong to the City of Richmond, Henrico County or Chesterfield County, and each has its own courts and published rate. Send us the full street address and we confirm the locality before quoting. That also tells counsel which sheriff and which clerk would be involved if the private serve fails.
Which Richmond courthouse gets the return?
The return goes to the clerk of the court that issued the papers. Circuit court returns go to the clerk in the John Marshall Courts Building. General district court papers may come from the John Marshall location or the Manchester courthouse on Hull Street, so we check the issuing office printed on the summons before filing.
What if a company has no registered agent in Virginia?
Virginia law makes the Clerk of the State Corporation Commission the agent when a corporation or LLC fails to maintain a registered agent or the agent cannot be found with reasonable diligence. Two copies of the process are left with the Clerk's office, which mails them and files a certificate; the fee is $30 per defendant. Our registered agent guidance explains when that applies.
Can you serve an unlawful detainer in Richmond?
We can serve the summons. Va. Code 8.01-126 lets a private server deliver it, and it must be served at least 10 days before the return day. Executing the writ of eviction is reserved to the sheriff, who gives the tenant at least 72 hours' notice. Our Virginia landlord papers page has the full sequence.
Do you serve papers in Richmond on Sunday?
No. Va. Code 8.01-289 prohibits serving civil process on Sunday except in narrow cases such as persons escaping custody. We plan attempts across early mornings, evenings and Saturdays instead, and the attempt log records the full pattern so counsel can show diligence later if needed. The Richmond-area evasive defendant service explains how that record is used.
How long does a Richmond defendant have to answer?
In circuit court, Rule 3:8(a) of the Rules of the Supreme Court of Virginia generally allows 21 days after service of the summons and complaint. In the general district court, the defendant appears by the return date on the warrant or summons. Counsel can confirm the deadline for the specific papers involved.
Can you serve federal papers at the Richmond Division?
Yes. The Eastern District of Virginia's Richmond Division sits at 701 East Broad Street, and federal summonses follow Federal Rule 4. We serve them anywhere in the city and the surrounding counties and provide proof formatted for the federal file. Contact Delator Field Services with the case number and deadline.
