Quick answer

How do I hire a process server in Goose Creek?

Upload the filed papers and the street address. We confirm whether the address is in Berkeley County or the small Charleston County part of the city, check the issuing court, and send the tier and price in writing. Berkeley County Routine service starts at $125, and the Berkeley County countywide page lists every town we cover.

01Local service landscape

A Growing Berkeley County City With Its Clerk Miles Away

Goose Creek counted 45,946 residents in 2020, and Census estimates put it at about 52,010 by mid-2025, which means new streets and new addresses every year. Most of the city lies in Berkeley County, with a small part in Charleston County. Berkeley's clerk of court is in Moncks Corner, so Goose Creek returns travel north rather than toward Charleston. Our Berkeley County process servers handle Moncks Corner, Bonneau and St. Stephen, and Hanahan and North Charleston service covers the line to the south.

Growth brings mapping problems. Newer sections of Carnes Crossroads and other subdivisions are not always placed correctly by every navigation tool, and a few minutes lost looking for a lot can mean missing the defendant. We confirm the address against the papers and any notes from counsel before the first visit. The South Carolina county rate finder shows how Berkeley's $125 Routine rate compares with neighboring Dorchester.

02Attorneys and law firms

Supporting Lowcountry Counsel and Firms Far From Berkeley County

Attorneys in Charleston and Moncks Corner send us Goose Creek collection suits, auto injury complaints, contractor disputes and family files, and firms in other states often need a former client or witness served after a military transfer brought them here. Our attorney service program in South Carolina gives each file one contact and one written quote, and rush and same day service covers deadlines that cannot wait for a Routine slot.

Before a server goes out, we read the papers closely. A case in Charleston County can still require a Goose Creek witness's non-party deposition subpoena to issue in Berkeley County under SCRCP 45(b)(2), because that is where the witness lives. A federal summons comes through the Charleston Division and follows Federal Rule 4. Counsel outside South Carolina can read how we handle papers from courts in other states first.

03Evasive and hard-to-serve

Base Schedules, Duty Rotations and People Who Avoid the Door

Defendants tied to the base often keep schedules that change with duty rotations, and civilian contractors and shift workers in the area do the same. We ask counsel what they know, the same intake we use for Moncks Corner and St. Stephen coverage, and plan the first attempts for early mornings, evenings or weekends rather than midday. Home attempts are usually the practical route, because access to the installation is governed by its own rules. Our page on serving hard-to-reach people explains how visits are spaced.

When a person is home but will not answer, we do not keep knocking at the same hour. We change the timing and record the lights, vehicles and any response. South Carolina law lets service happen on Sunday, but S.C. Code 15-9-17 bars serving someone going to, attending or returning from a religious service that day. If careful attempts still fail, the avoided-service guide for South Carolina describes court-ordered options.

04Family law, landlords and subpoenas

Military Families, Rental Housing and Magistrate Claims

Family court cases for Goose Creek are filed through the Berkeley County clerk. The summons and complaint follow SCRCP 4, and the Acceptance of Service form, SCCA 400.03, often works when both spouses cooperate. A deployed or relocated servicemember adds questions for counsel about where and how service should happen. When in-person delivery is needed here, we keep it private and describe the recipient. Rules to show cause go through the sheriff or a court-designated person, as our South Carolina custody and divorce service page notes.

Goose Creek has many rentals near the base. The magistrate's rule to vacate is served through the sheriff in the counties we checked, so we accept it only when the court confirms private service is acceptable, and we never post or carry out a writ of ejectment. We regularly serve landlords' summonses in suits for unpaid rent or damage. Claims of up to $7,500 appear on our magistrate claims page, and witness papers on the subpoena service overview.

05Documentation

An Affidavit That Answers the Questions a Default Will Raise

Proof from a non-officer server in South Carolina takes the form of a sworn affidavit. SCRCP 4(g) asks that it give the date, time and place of service and the name and address of the person served, or a description if the name is unknown. In Goose Creek, our affidavits also record anything the server observed that bears on military status, such as what the recipient said, because counsel will need that later. The South Carolina guide to serving papers explains the filing step.

Before a default judgment, the court must have an affidavit stating whether the defendant is in military service, or that the plaintiff cannot tell. That affidavit is counsel's, not ours, but a detailed field record makes it easier to prepare. Delator may use vetted contract servers outside Tennessee, each working to the same written documentation standard, and the attempt log is available on request. The rate map covering eight states helps firms that track transfers across state lines.

06South Carolina rules

How South Carolina Rules Apply to a Goose Creek Summons

SCRCP 4(c) allows the sheriff, a deputy or any adult at least 18 who is neither a party nor an attorney in the case to serve a summons. Other process, including orders, rules and writs, generally requires the sheriff, another law enforcement officer or a person the court designates, so we confirm before accepting it. South Carolina does not have a statewide license for private process servers; our explanation of who may serve goes further.

Rule 4(d)(1) permits personal delivery, delivery at the dwelling to a resident of suitable age and discretion and delivery to an authorized agent. A summons may also be sent by restricted-delivery certified mail or a qualifying commercial delivery service, but a default on either needs the defendant's own signature. When the limitations period has run by filing, service generally must be completed within 120 days under Rule 3(a). This is general information only; read about Delator Group, a Tennessee firm headquartered in Nashville.

The Naval Weapons Station and the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act

The Naval Weapons Station portion of Joint Base Lindsey Graham (formerly Joint Base Charleston) lies in Goose Creek and Hanahan. The joint base, renamed on Aug. 10, 2026, covers nearly 23,000 acres and joined Air Force and Navy installations in 2010. Whether a server can enter depends on the installation's access rules, so we plan home or off-base attempts. A process server in Goose Creek should expect many cases to raise military questions, and we flag them early.

If a defendant appears to be in military service, the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act requires the court to appoint an attorney before entering judgment and, in the circumstances the statute describes, to grant a stay of at least 90 days. A knowingly false military status affidavit can bring a fine and up to a year in prison. Counsel decides how to handle those issues. Defendants who have moved to nearby towns are reached by Summerville process servers and our Mount Pleasant team.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Who may serve a summons in Goose Creek?

Under SCRCP 4(c), the sheriff, a deputy or any person 18 or older who is not a party to or an attorney in the case may serve a summons. A subpoena may be served by any non-party adult under Rule 45. Orders, writs and rules generally go to the sheriff or a court-designated person, so we check before accepting them.

How much does a process server in Goose Creek cost?

Berkeley County's published Routine starting rate is $125, with Urgent at $188, Rush at $250 and Same Day Rush at $375. The final price depends on the address, the papers and the deadline, and we confirm it in writing before assigning a server. If sheriff service would be simpler for your papers, we will tell you.

Where do Goose Creek returns of service go?

To the court that issued the papers. For Berkeley County Common Pleas and family court cases, that is the Berkeley County Clerk of Court at 300-B California Ave., Moncks Corner, which also lists a Charleston-area phone line. Cases filed in Charleston County go back to Broad Street. We name the issuing court on our affidavit.

Can you serve someone on the Naval Weapons Station?

Whether anyone can deliver papers inside the station turns on its own entry rules, which we never take for granted. Off-base housing is where most sailors, airmen and civilian staff are actually served. Counsel should also plan for the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act, which requires an affidavit about military status before a default and can lead to a stay of at least 90 days.

Can papers be left with a spouse while the servicemember is away?

SCRCP 4(d)(1) permits leaving the summons and complaint at the defendant's dwelling house or usual place of abode with a person of suitable age and discretion who resides there. Whether a home is still a deployed servicemember's usual place of abode is a question for counsel. Our affidavit records who accepted the papers and what they said, and the South Carolina family law delivery options explain the alternatives.

Do you serve eviction papers in Goose Creek?

No, not the magistrate's rule to vacate on a routine basis. In the counties we checked it goes through the sheriff, and only a constable or deputy sheriff carries out a writ of ejectment. We take the rule only when the magistrate confirms private service is acceptable. Landlords' suits for rent or damage are routine. Read the guide to South Carolina eviction papers.

How long does a Goose Creek defendant have to answer?

A defendant in Common Pleas generally has 30 days after service of the complaint under SCRCP 12(a). In magistrate court, the 30 days begin the day after delivery. The self-represented divorce summons allows 35 days after restricted-delivery certified mail service. Counsel should confirm the exact deadline, especially if military status could affect the timeline.

What if a Goose Creek defendant has transferred out of state?

South Carolina papers may be served outside the state when a statute provides, and S.C. Code 15-9-750 treats personal service out of state as equivalent to publication, complete on the day served. If the person cannot be found, a court may order publication after due diligence. See our explainer on publication service.

Can you serve a contractor or business in Goose Creek?

Yes. We serve the registered agent, or an officer or managing agent named in counsel's papers, and record the recipient's title. If a South Carolina corporation's registered agent cannot be served with reasonable diligence, a court or clerk may order certified mail to the corporate secretary, perfected five days after mailing. Our registered agent delivery page has details.

Do you serve federal papers in Goose Creek?

Yes. Berkeley County falls in the Charleston Division, whose cases are heard at 83 Meeting St. and 85 Broad St. in Charleston. Our proof for those cases is built to Federal Rule 4, which also lets state-law methods be used. Open a Goose Creek request with the case number and deadline.
