01Local service landscape

The Ground a Lauderdale County Server Covers

Lauderdale County spans roughly 715 square miles on Mississippi's eastern border, with Sumter and Choctaw counties in Alabama on the other side. The 2025 estimate put the population near 70,300, down about 3.6 percent from 2020. Meridian holds most residents, and Marion is the county's only other municipality. Outside them, unincorporated communities such as Collinsville, about 13 miles northwest along Highway 19, and Toomsuba, about 13 miles east, spread across long rural stretches. Every request is quoted under our Mississippi service of process program before a server is dispatched.

Because the county is large and the population is concentrated, travel time drives cost more than the number of attempts. That is why Lauderdale's published starting rate is higher than counties next to a metro hub. We group attempts by area when a case has several addresses, and if a rural address is uncertain we recommend a residence confirmation before the drive. The statewide county price map shows how tiers are set.

02Attorneys and law firms

Working With Meridian Firms and Counsel From Out of Town

Meridian is the seat of a multi-county chancery and circuit system as of 2026, so local firms often carry cases in Clarke, Kemper and Wayne as well. Firms from Jackson, Hattiesburg or Birmingham may need one Lauderdale County defendant served without a dedicated trip. Our Mississippi attorney support services keep the quote, the running attempt log and the finished affidavit with a single coordinator, which helps when a docket has several serves moving at once.

One detail trips up outside counsel regularly: Lauderdale County federal cases belong to the Southern District's Northern Division in Jackson, not the Eastern Division in Hattiesburg. We mark the division on our return so the affidavit is filed in the right place. When a case calls for witness background work or a records search, Delator's Lauderdale County investigators can help under a separate scope, and investigative consulting supports trial preparation.

03Evasive and hard-to-serve

Reaching Defendants Who Keep Missing the Server

Rural Lauderdale County properties can sit far back from the road behind gates, and many residents commute along I-20 or I-59 to jobs in Meridian or across the Alabama line. A defendant who leaves before dawn and returns after dark may never be home during ordinary hours. Our servers spread attempts across early morning, evening and weekend windows, record gates, vehicles and lighting at each visit, and write down anything a neighbor volunteers about the household.

If the pattern shows the person is avoiding service or has moved, we recommend a targeted step instead of more of the same visit. An evasive person search can identify a new address or employer, and a short surveillance engagement can pin down when the person is actually present. Each option is quoted separately and starts only on the client's written approval. For judgment debtors, a collections-focused locate is often the faster path.

04Family law, evictions, small claims, subpoenas

Family Court, Landlord and Witness Papers in Lauderdale County

Divorce, custody and support cases are filed in the Lauderdale County Chancery Court. The special summons once found in Rule 81(d) has been part of M.R.C.P. 4(i) since July 1, 2026; it directs the defendant to appear on a hearing date the court sets, so timing matters. Albright factors still guide chancellors, alongside a reported 2026 presumption of joint custody that a parent can rebut. Our Mississippi custody investigations guide explains what evidence can be gathered lawfully.

In justice court, the constable serves eviction and small claims summonses in the first instance, and a private server is used only after a written request when the constable has not returned process. Removal is always carried out by a sheriff or constable. Trial and deposition subpoenas under M.R.C.P. 45 may be served by any non-party adult, with one day's attendance fee and mileage tendered at delivery. Our step-by-step Mississippi service guide covers each document.

05Documentation and challenges

Affidavits That Answer a Motion to Quash

Rule 4(f) requires a server other than a sheriff to prove service by affidavit, and the strength of that affidavit decides most challenges. Ours list the documents, the person served, the method, the address, the date and the time, along with how the server confirmed identity. When abode service is used, the affidavit identifies the spouse or family member above sixteen who accepted, notes the stated relationship and records the first-class mailing that completes service ten days later. All of it follows the Delator documentation standard.

When a defendant claims they never lived at the address or never received the papers, the attempt log and supporting notes are what counsel puts in front of the judge. We keep them together with any photographs and the mailing receipt so the response can be prepared quickly. If testimony is needed, the server can appear. Send concerns about a particular address through Delator's contact page before the first attempt.

06Mississippi service rules

Mississippi Service Rules Every Filer Should Know

Under M.R.C.P. 4(c)(1), a summons may generally be served by any person at least 18 years old who is not a party, and the state does not issue process server licenses. The sheriff of the county where the defendant lives or is found will serve on a party's written request. Personal delivery to the defendant is the default. Leaving papers at the home with a qualifying household member is allowed only after reasonable diligence fails, and it must be followed by first-class mail. Our guide to vetting help where Mississippi requires no license applies here.

For a person outside Mississippi, Rule 4(c)(5) allows certified mail, return receipt requested, with restricted delivery, which can matter for a defendant who moved to Alabama. Rule 4(h) generally sets a 120-day window to complete service, and Rule 12(a) gives 30 days to answer. These are plain summaries as of 2026, not legal advice, so confirm the method with counsel. The Mississippi investigations and service hub covers statewide rules.

07A Lauderdale County angle

Naval Air Station Meridian and the Alabama Line

Naval Air Station Meridian sits about 11 miles northeast of the city in Lauderdale and Kemper counties and is one of the Navy's two jet strike pilot training bases, home to Training Air Wing ONE. Sailors, instructors, students and civilian employees rotate through on set schedules, and many rent in Meridian or the surrounding county. Training rotations mean a defendant can be present for months and then transfer with little notice.

A private server cannot enter the installation at will, so service is usually planned at an off-base residence, and attorneys typically weigh the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act before seeking a default against a service member. Separately, the county's long border with Alabama means some defendants have moved just across it. We tell you in writing whether we can coordinate that address, and counsel can see how status checks fit into our work for Mississippi law firms. Files heading south go to our Jones County servers, and multistate matters use the multistate process serving rate map.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a licensed process server in Meridian?

No state license exists for process servers in Mississippi. Under M.R.C.P. 4(c)(1), a summons may generally be served by any non-party who is at least 18, and the sheriff serves on written request. What protects your case is a correct method and a detailed affidavit, which is the standard described on our Mississippi process serving overview.

Why is the Lauderdale County rate higher than some counties?

County tiers reflect population and the distance to the nearest metro hub where servers are based. Lauderdale County is farther from that hub than Forrest or Lamar, so its published Routine starting rate is $185. Urgent is 1.5 times Routine, Rush twice and Same Day Rush three times. Your total is confirmed in writing before the first attempt.

Which federal court handles Lauderdale County cases?

Lauderdale County is assigned by 28 U.S.C. § 104 to the Southern District of Mississippi's Northern Division, which sits in Jackson, rather than the Eastern Division in Hattiesburg. A federal summons is served under Federal Rule of Civil Procedure 4, and our affidavit states the manner, date, time and place of delivery and notes the division on the cover.

Can you serve a sailor at NAS Meridian?

We do not enter the installation without authorization, so service is normally planned at an off-base residence or arranged with counsel. Attorneys should also consider the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act before requesting a default against an active-duty defendant. Send rank, unit and schedule details if you have them, and we will explain in writing what is realistic.

My defendant moved to Alabama. Can the case still proceed?

Often, yes. M.R.C.P. 4(c)(5) generally permits certified mail with return receipt and restricted delivery to a person outside Mississippi, and personal delivery may also be possible. Which route fits depends on the case, so counsel should decide. We will tell you in writing whether we can coordinate personal service at the Alabama address before you commit to anything.

Who serves Lauderdale County justice court papers?

The constable ordinarily serves justice court process, including evictions and small claims. Under Miss. R. Just. Ct. 14(g), the plaintiff may request a private server in writing once the constable has not returned process. Give us the case number and what the constable has tried, and we will confirm in writing whether a private serve is possible.

What happens if my defendant cannot be found?

When an address proves vacant, attempts stop and we call you instead of billing more trips. A missing defendant search often turns up a new address or employer. If diligent inquiry still fails, counsel may ask the court about publication under M.R.C.P. 4(c)(4), which requires a sworn showing that the defendant could not be found.

Is Delator located in Meridian?

No. Delator Group is a licensed Tennessee firm headquartered in Nashville and has no Mississippi office. Delator Field Services coordinates Lauderdale County work, and a vetted contract server may make the delivery under Delator's attempt-log and affidavit standard. You can learn how the firm is organized on the About Delator Group page.

Can you serve papers on a Meridian business?

Yes. M.R.C.P. 4(d)(4) generally permits service on an officer or a managing or general agent, and Miss. Code Ann. § 79-35-13 points first to the registered agent. We check Secretary of State filings before the attempt. Firms that need deeper research on a company can use our Mississippi corporate investigations under a separate written scope.

What should a Lauderdale County request include?

Send the filed papers, the defendant's full name, every known address with unit numbers, a photo or description, vehicles, employer and shift, any military affiliation and the court deadline. Include the witness fee and mileage for subpoenas. If you are handling the case yourself, start with our guide to how service works in Mississippi.
