Quick answer
How much does a process server cost in South Dakota?
Delator Field Services publishes a Routine starting rate for each South Dakota county, from $125 in Minnehaha, Lincoln and Pennington counties to $260 in the most remote ones. Urgent is 1.5 times Routine, Rush twice and Same Day Rush three times. Use the finder below, then send the papers for a quote and we confirm the price in writing.
01How rates are set
How We Set a Starting Rate for Each South Dakota County
Each county's Routine starting rate comes from two inputs: how many people live there and how far it is from the nearest metro area a server works out of. Minnehaha and Lincoln counties around Sioux Falls and Pennington County around Rapid City start at $125, and Meade County next to Rapid City starts at $130. Counties farther out and with fewer residents start higher, and the metro detail for the state's most populous county is on the Sioux Falls service page.
For some counties the nearest metro is across a state line. Brown, Day, Marshall and Roberts counties are measured from Fargo, ten north-central and northwestern counties from Bismarck, and Clay and Union counties from Sioux City, Iowa. That is why Union County starts at $140 and Clay at $155: both sit close to Sioux City, the metro their rates are measured from. The statewide process serving page describes how servers are assigned.
02Service levels
Routine, Urgent, Rush and Same Day Rush Explained
Routine is the standard pace for a serve with no imminent deadline. Urgent costs 1.5 times Routine and moves the first attempt up; Rush is twice Routine and makes the serve a priority; Same Day Rush is three times Routine and aims for an attempt the day the papers arrive. In Minnehaha County those levels start at $125, $188, $250 and $375. Faster tiers change the timing, never the documentation, and Brookings County service shows how a mid-range county is priced.
Same Day Rush depends on more than willingness. A Sioux Falls apartment and a ranch in Harding County are different jobs, and winter roads can make a same-day promise unrealistic. We quote Same Day Rush only when the address, the distance and the weather support it. Attorneys with recurring deadlines can review our process serving support for law firms and plan the right tier ahead of time, while Yankton process service and Huron service of process show two more county examples.

- Urgent: 1.5 times Routine
- Rush: 2 times Routine
- Same Day Rush: 3 times Routine, when conditions allow
03Distance and weather
South Dakota Distances, Time Zones and Weather in the Price
South Dakota is about 77,000 square miles with roughly 935,000 people, and Sioux Falls to Rapid City is about 350 miles on I-90. Eight counties carry the top published Routine rate of $260: Buffalo, Faulk, Hyde, Jones, Lyman, Stanley, Sully and Tripp. Those figures reflect real drive time, not a surcharge for difficulty, and Lake County rates near Madison show the other end of the scale. Defendants in Pierre are covered on the Pierre process serving page, where Hughes County starts at $250.
Weather and time zones matter as well. The Central and Mountain Time line crosses I-90 at the west edge of Jones County, so West River windows are quoted in Mountain Time. SDDOT has closed I-90 across much of the state in blizzards, and when that happens we hold attempts and confirm the new schedule in writing rather than add a charge. Our Rapid City process servers handle many of those West River trips.
04What the rate covers
What Every Published Rate Includes
Each published starting rate covers the assignment of a vetted server, attempts at varied times, a log of every attempt with date, time, place and observations, and a signed affidavit stating the time, place and manner of service as SDCL 15-6-4(g) requires. Outside Tennessee, serves may be carried out by vetted servers Delator contracts with, and every one follows the same written documentation standard.
What can change the final figure is the job itself: an address that needs to be traced first, several defendants at different locations, a serve that requires a second trip to a remote county or papers that arrive incomplete. We identify those factors before the first attempt and put the final price in writing. When an address is stale, locating a person who has moved is quoted separately, and the South Dakota investigation pricing page lists the investigative rates.
05Special service rules
Evictions, Mail Admissions and Publication Under South Dakota Rules
Eviction service has its own pattern. Under SDCL 21-16-6, a forcible entry and detainer summons generally needs at least two attempts at least a week apart, both within 30 days, with posting or resident delivery and a first-class mailing on the second. Both attempts fall under one quote. The old three-day notice to quit was repealed in 2024, and the how-to guide on serving papers in South Dakota covers the current basics.
Some cases never need a server. Under SDCL 15-6-4(i), a defendant can sign and return an admission of service by mail, and one who refuses without good cause within 20 days can be ordered to pay the cost of personal service. If a defendant cannot be found in the state after due diligence, SDCL 15-9-7 allows publication on court order, and our attempt log supports that affidavit. Evasive defendant locates can often resolve the problem before publication is needed.
06Special situations
Tribal Land, Federal Papers and Other Special Situations
Nine tribal nations share South Dakota, and reservation or trust lands cover more than 12 percent of the state. Service on a tribal member within reservation boundaries raises jurisdictional questions that depend on the parties, land status and claim, so we confirm the method with counsel before quoting. Counties such as Todd, Oglala Lakota, Dewey and Ziebach carry published rates, but those rates do not settle whether state process is effective there.
Federal papers follow Federal Rule 4 and are priced by county like any other serve. Business defendants are generally served through an officer, director, partner or registered agent under SDCL 15-6-4(d). Subpoenas generally need one day's witness fee plus mileage tendered at service, and that fee is separate from our rate. For corporate defendants, business investigations in South Dakota can confirm who to serve, and witness checks before trial confirm identity.
07Ordering
How to Order a Serve at a Published Rate
Find the county in the finder or the full table, choose the service level and send us the filed papers with every known address, a description of the defendant and the deadline. We confirm the county from the address, check for anything that would change the price, such as a second defendant, and send the final figure in writing. Nothing is attempted until you approve it, and the multistate rate map covers defendants in other states.
Once approved, the server makes attempts at varied times and logs each one, and you receive updates as the serve moves. The signed affidavit comes back ready to file with the issuing court, and field notes are available on request. If you are representing yourself, the guide to what a PI can legally do and the statewide investigations overview explain how Delator works in South Dakota.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Why do process server rates in South Dakota vary by county?
Each county's starting rate reflects its population and its distance from the nearest metro area a server works from. Minnehaha, Lincoln and Pennington counties start at $125 for Routine service. Remote counties such as Buffalo, Faulk, Jones and Tripp start at $260. Every published figure is a starting rate, and the final price is confirmed in writing.
Is the published rate the final price?
Not always. It is a published starting rate. The final price depends on the exact address, the service level, the number of defendants and whether a locate is needed first. We review those details and confirm the figure in writing before the first attempt, so you know the cost before anything happens. The Brookings process serving page shows a typical county quote.
How are Urgent, Rush and Same Day Rush priced?
They are set multiples of the county's Routine rate: Urgent is 1.5 times, Rush is 2 times and Same Day Rush is 3 times. In Minnehaha County that means $125, $188, $250 and $375. Same Day Rush is quoted only when distance and road conditions make a same-day attempt realistic, which is easier in Sioux Falls or Rapid City than in a remote county.
Does an eviction summons cost more because it needs two attempts?
No. Under SDCL 21-16-6, a forcible entry and detainer summons generally needs at least two attempts a week apart within 30 days, with posting and a first-class mailing on the second. Both attempts are covered by one quote at the county rate. See the Watertown process server page for how that looks locally.
Why are Union and Clay counties measured from Sioux City?
Because Sioux City, Iowa, is the nearest metro area to both. Union County is about 17 miles from it, so its Routine rate starts at $140. Clay County, also measured from Sioux City, starts at $155. Counties are priced by distance to the closest metro, wherever that metro is, not by distance to Sioux Falls.
Is the witness fee included in the rate for a subpoena?
No. Under SDCL 15-6-45(c), a subpoena generally must be served with one day's attendance fee plus mileage tendered to the witness, unless a public body issued it. That fee belongs to the witness and is separate from our service rate. We note the tender on the return, and the Mitchell process server page covers rural subpoena service.
Do these rates apply to federal court papers?
Yes. Federal summonses and subpoenas are priced by the county where service takes place, at the same published starting rates. Federal service follows Federal Rule 4, whether the case is filed in the Sioux Falls, Rapid City, Pierre or Aberdeen courthouse, and the rate depends only on where the defendant is served. The affidavit is prepared for federal filing.
What if the defendant has moved and the county changes?
We tell you as soon as an attempt shows the person has moved, and we quote the new county in writing before any further attempt. If the new address is unknown, a Delator Group investigator can trace it under a separate written quote, and the Aberdeen process server page explains how outlying counties are scheduled.
Do you serve papers in other states at these rates?
No. These are South Dakota rates. Delator Field Services publishes separate county rates for Wyoming, Idaho, Mississippi, Virginia, South Carolina, Georgia and Kentucky on the multistate process serve pricing map. Each state's figures are published starting rates confirmed in writing, just like South Dakota's. Alaska is not served because it requires a state process server license.
Is a license required to serve process in South Dakota?
No. South Dakota does not license process servers. Under SDCL 15-6-4(c), a summons may generally be served by a county sheriff, a constable or any non-party who is an elector of any state. Delator Field Services adds its own documentation standard on every serve, whatever the county or rate, and the investigator vetting guide explains what to look for.
