Quick answer
How do I hire a process server in North Charleston?
Send the filed papers and the defendant's street address. Because the city covers parts of Charleston, Berkeley and Dorchester counties, we confirm the county first, then the issuing court and the tier, and send the price in writing. Routine service in Charleston County starts at $125, and our South Carolina process serving overview explains the statewide setup.
01Local service landscape
Three Counties, Two Interstates and a Long, Narrow City
North Charleston stretches from the Cooper River waterfront to the Dorchester County subdivisions west of the Ashley, and the 2020 census counted 114,852 residents. The city lies in Charleston, Berkeley and Dorchester counties, so two houses a few miles apart can belong to different sheriffs, magistrates and clerks. We check the county for every address. Defendants on the western edge are often handled with Dorchester County service, and the Charleston County coverage page explains the rest of that county.
Two interstates define the routes. I-26 runs the length of the city toward its end in Charleston, and I-526, the Mark Clark Expressway, crosses it on the way from West Ashley to Mount Pleasant. During a hurricane evacuation I-26 lanes can be reversed between I-526 and I-77, as happened for Hurricane Florence in 2018, and we pause or reroute attempts when that happens. Clients comparing tiers can open the county-by-county rate finder.
- Parts of Charleston, Berkeley and Dorchester counties
- I-26 and I-526 meet inside the city
- Hurricane lane reversal possible on I-26
- Clerk depends on the county of the case
02Attorneys and law firms
Supporting Litigators With Defendants in the Industrial Corridor
North Charleston carries much of the region's port and logistics work. The Hugh K. Leatherman Terminal opened in March 2021, and the North Charleston and Veterans terminals sit along the same riverfront, so many defendants and witnesses work in shipping, warehousing and trucking. Attorneys send us contract claims, freight disputes, injury suits and records subpoenas tied to that economy. Our law firm service program keeps one contact and one affidavit per matter, and expedited South Carolina service handles tight hearing dates.
We read the packet before anyone drives out. A case pending in Charleston County may still require a non-party deposition subpoena issued in Berkeley or Dorchester County if that is where the witness lives or works, under SCRCP 45(b)(2). When we see that mismatch, we raise it with counsel before the first visit. Out-of-state firms with a North Charleston defendant can review our approach to foreign summonses and subpoenas before sending the file.
03Evasive and hard-to-serve
Rotating Shifts, Gated Lots and Defendants Who Stay Out of Sight
Terminal, warehouse and plant schedules rotate, and a defendant who worked days last month may be on nights now. We ask clients for any shift information they have and spread visits across early mornings, evenings and weekends. Many employers control entry to their lots, and Charleston County magistrate and circuit filers often find home attempts are usually more practical than workplace visits. The hard-to-serve defendants page describes how we plan those attempts and what each log entry records.
Sunday is a working day for service in South Carolina under S.C. Code 15-9-17, except on someone going to, attending or returning from a religious service, which gives servers one more day to work with. When a person clearly refuses to come to the door, we note the observations rather than repeating the same visit. If diligent attempts fail, counsel may consider publication or other court-ordered routes, which our guide to avoided service explains in plain terms.
04Family law, landlords and subpoenas
Family Court Files, Rental Housing and Magistrate Cases
Family cases follow the county too. A spouse in a Charleston County neighborhood is sued through the Broad Street clerk, while one in the Dorchester County part of the city files with the clerk in St. George and appears at the family court in Summerville. Service of the summons and complaint follows SCRCP 4, and the Acceptance of Service form is often simpler. We handle in-person delivery discreetly, as the divorce and custody service page describes, but rules to show cause go through the sheriff or a court-designated person.
North Charleston has a large rental market, and landlords ask us about evictions often. The rule to vacate is routed through the sheriff in the counties we checked, so we serve it only where the magistrate confirms private service is accepted, and we never post or carry out a writ of ejectment. Summonses in suits for unpaid rent or property damage are routine for us. Magistrate claims up to $7,500 are covered on our magistrate court service page, and subpoenas for court and depositions follow Rule 45.
- Family court papers in all three counties
- Rent and property-damage suits for landlords
- Rule to vacate only on court confirmation
- Magistrate claims up to $7,500
05Documentation
Building an Affidavit That Names the Right County and Court
In a three-county city, a good affidavit starts with the right caption. We confirm the court and case number on intake and make sure the proof goes to the clerk that issued the papers. Under SCRCP 4(g), a private server's affidavit states the date, time and place of service and the name and address of the person served, or a description if the name is unknown. The South Carolina serving guide walks through each step.
When service is challenged, the field record usually decides the question: the street, the hour, the description of the recipient and the attempts that came before. Outside Tennessee, Delator may assign vetted contract servers, and each follows the same written documentation standard. You can ask for the full attempt log at any time. Rates in neighboring states are on the multistate process serving map for firms with cases on both sides of the Savannah River.
06South Carolina rules
What South Carolina Requires Before a Summons Is Delivered
SCRCP 4(c) allows a sheriff, a deputy or any non-party adult who is at least 18 and not an attorney in the action to serve a summons. Orders, writs and rules are other process, generally reserved for the sheriff, another officer or a person the court designates, so we confirm before taking them. There is no statewide license for private process servers in South Carolina, as our who-may-serve explainer sets out.
Rule 4(d) lists the methods: personal delivery, delivery at the dwelling to a resident of suitable age and discretion, delivery to an authorized agent, restricted-delivery certified mail and a qualifying commercial delivery service. Mail or courier service supports a default only with the defendant's own signature. If the limitations period has run by filing, actual service generally must happen within 120 days under Rule 3(a). These are summaries, not legal advice; read about Delator Group, a Tennessee firm headquartered in Nashville.

Joint Base Lindsey Graham and Serving Military Households
The Charleston Air Force Base portion of Joint Base Lindsey Graham (formerly Joint Base Charleston) sits mainly in North Charleston, and the joint base supports 67 organizations and more than 90,000 people, including dependents and retirees. The installation was renamed on Aug. 10, 2026. Service on the base depends on its access rules, so we plan attempts at off-base homes where possible. A process server in North Charleston should also flag military status early, because it affects what the court requires later.
Before entering a default, the court must have an affidavit stating whether the defendant is in military service, and a servicemember may receive an appointed attorney and a stay of at least 90 days under the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act. That is counsel's call, but our affidavit records anything the server observes that bears on it. Many base families live in Goose Creek or Summerville, which our Goose Creek servers and Summerville process service cover.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Which county is my North Charleston address in?
It depends on the street. North Charleston includes parts of Charleston, Berkeley and Dorchester counties, and the county controls the sheriff, the magistrate and where a non-party deposition subpoena must issue. The case itself stays with the court where it was filed. We check the parcel before routing and note the county on the affidavit.
How much does a process server in North Charleston cost?
Charleston and Berkeley County addresses start at a published Routine rate of $125, with Urgent at $188, Rush at $250 and Same Day Rush at $375. The Dorchester County side starts at $130 Routine. We confirm the final price in writing before assigning anyone, based on the address, the papers and the deadline.
Who is allowed to serve a summons in North Charleston?
A sheriff, a deputy or any person at least 18 who is not a party to or an attorney in the case may serve a summons under SCRCP 4(c). Subpoenas can be served by any non-party adult under Rule 45. Orders and rules to show cause generally go to the sheriff or a court-designated person, so we confirm before accepting them.
Do you serve eviction papers in North Charleston?
Not as a routine service. The rule to vacate goes through the sheriff in the counties we checked, and only a constable or deputy sheriff executes a writ of ejectment. A private serve of the rule happens only when the magistrate tells us it will be accepted. Landlords' summonses for rent or damage are routine. Our eviction service explainer for South Carolina covers the timeline.
Can you serve someone on Joint Base Lindsey Graham?
Service on the installation depends on the base's access rules, and we do not assume entry. Most servicemembers and civilian employees can be reached at an off-base home. Before a default, the court needs an affidavit about military status under the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act, which can lead to an appointed attorney and a stay of at least 90 days.
How long does a North Charleston defendant have to respond?
The usual answer window is 30 days from service of the complaint, set by SCRCP 12(a). Magistrate court uses a comparable 30-day period under SCRMC 7(b), counted from the first day after service. A divorce summons served by restricted-delivery certified mail allows 35 days. Counsel should confirm the exact date for the case.
Can you serve a warehouse or terminal company?
Yes. We serve the registered agent, or an officer or managing agent named in counsel's papers, and record the recipient's name and title. When a South Carolina corporation has no reachable registered agent, the court or clerk may order certified mail to the corporate secretary under S.C. Code 15-9-210(c). Our corporate and registered agent service page explains the options.
What if a North Charleston defendant cannot be located?
We send a dated record of every attempt. If a defendant cannot be found in South Carolina after due diligence, the court, a judge or the clerk of common pleas may order service by publication on an affidavit under S.C. Code 15-9-710. A detailed log helps counsel show that diligence. See the South Carolina publication guide for the requirements.
May a North Charleston relative accept the papers?
Yes, if that relative lives there. Rule 4(d)(1) of the SCRCP permits leaving the papers at the defendant's dwelling or usual place of abode with a resident of suitable age and discretion. A visitor or a neighbor does not qualify. Our affidavit names or describes the person who accepted the papers, so the court can decide whether the service was proper. Hard-to-reach defendants in the Lowcountry often require this route.
Do you handle federal papers for North Charleston defendants?
Yes. Cases from Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester counties fall in the Charleston Division, which sits at 83 Meeting St. and 85 Broad St. in Charleston. Federal summonses follow Federal Rule 4, which permits state-law methods, and our proof is formatted for the federal docket. Contact our South Carolina intake team with the case number.
