Quick answer
How do I hire a process server in Boise?
Upload the papers or phone us with the details. We confirm the Ada County address, the service level and the price in writing, then assign a server who logs each visit. Routine service in Ada County has a published starting rate of $125, and the Idaho county rate map shows how surrounding counties compare.
01Local service landscape
Serving Papers in Idaho's Capital and Largest City
Boise had an estimated 237,963 residents in 2024, and Ada County passed 546,000 in 2025, making it the most populous county in Idaho by a wide margin. Garden City sits entirely inside Boise's boundaries as its own city, and Eagle, Meridian, Kuna and Star fill in the rest of the county. We confirm the city and county of every address, because a Garden City apartment and a Boise house a block apart can carry different municipal details, and Meridian process service picks up the fast-growing west side.
I-84 runs along the south side of the city, the I-184 connector feeds downtown, and US 20 crosses through town. Those roads make most Boise addresses an easy drive, but foothill homes with long private lanes, gated communities, student housing near Boise State and new construction in Southeast Boise all take planning. When an address is stale, our Boise investigators confirm where the person lives now, and skip tracing across Idaho handles defendants who left the valley.
- Boise, Garden City and the rest of Ada County
- I-84, I-184 and US 20 corridors
- Gated subdivisions and foothill lanes
- Student housing near Boise State
02Attorneys and law firms
Service Support for Boise Firms and Counsel Filing From Elsewhere
Boise is Idaho's legal center. The Ada County Courthouse on Front Street, the federal clerk's office on Fort Street and the Idaho Supreme Court on State Street all sit within a short walk of each other downtown, and most of the state's larger firms keep offices nearby. Boise practitioners send us collection suits, injury and malpractice claims, construction disputes and employment matters, and our Idaho attorney services keep the quote, the attempts and the affidavit with one coordinator.
Out-of-state firms in Salt Lake City, Portland, Seattle and Denver regularly need a Boise resident served. We read the papers before scheduling, because a Fourth District summons, a federal summons and a deposition subpoena each follow different rules, and we flag problems such as a defendant who has moved to Canyon County or a business whose registered agent has changed. If a trial witness must be found first, witness background research and lost contact locates can run in parallel.
03Evasive and hard-to-serve
Construction Crews, Student Renters and Defendants Who Avoid the Door
Boise's workforce keeps unusual hours. Micron, headquartered in Boise, has announced two memory fabs in Southeast Boise as part of a reported $50 billion Idaho investment, and large projects like that bring shift workers and traveling crews who are seldom home at midday. Boise State's 27,000-plus students change addresses every semester. Servers schedule early mornings, evenings and weekends, log each attempt with its result, and note when a building's front desk refuses access.
Some defendants avoid service deliberately by not answering, staying with friends in Garden City or moving out to Kuna or Star. When the ordinary attempts stall, a Delator Group investigator can take over the search through locating evasive defendants in Idaho. If the person still cannot be found, the attempt log supports the affidavit counsel files when seeking publication under Idaho Code 5-508, and the missing person search guide for Idaho explains what a lawful search covers.
04Family law, evictions and subpoenas
Divorce, Eviction, Small Claims and Subpoena Service in Boise
Ada County divorce and custody cases are heard in the magistrate division, and I.R.F.L.P. 204 generally allows personal delivery, abode service on a resident at least 18, or delivery to an authorized agent. We serve family papers quietly, confirm identity before handing anything over and avoid confrontations at workplaces. Protection order papers usually go to law enforcement unless the petitioner chooses a private server, and stalking investigations in Idaho can support a petitioner with documentation.
Boise landlords run on a tight eviction calendar. Idaho Code 6-310 generally sets a nonpayment case for trial within 12 days of filing and requires service at least five days before trial, so papers should come to us the day they are filed. Small claims up to $15,000 and witness subpoenas make up much of the rest of our residential work, and screening a rental applicant or a dating background check can prevent the next dispute.
- Divorce, custody and support papers
- Unlawful detainer summonses on short trial dates
- Small claims summonses and answer forms
- Trial and deposition subpoenas

What a Boise Affidavit Shows if Service Is Challenged
A private server in Idaho proves service by affidavit, and I.R.C.P. 4(g)(1) requires it to state that the server is over 18, identify the documents and describe the manner, date and place of service. Our Boise affidavits do that and rest on a field log of every attempt, including the ones that failed, with the address, the hour and what the server saw. Serves may be carried out by vetted servers Delator contracts with, all held to the same written standard.
If a defendant later swears they were never served, the record answers the question. The log shows whether the papers went to the defendant personally or to a resident at least 18 at the dwelling, and it describes the recipient. Counsel can request the notes at any time. When a service dispute grows into a factual fight, our criminal defense investigations in Idaho and investigative consulting for counsel can take it further.
06Idaho rules
Service of Process Rules That Apply in Boise
Idaho has no process server license. Under I.R.C.P. 4(c)(2), a Boise summons can generally be delivered by a sheriff's deputy or other authorized officer, or by any adult over 18 who is not a party to the case. A defendant may also sign a written admission of service under I.R.C.P. 4(d)(5), which saves a field visit when the parties are cooperating. If a defendant is not served within 182 days after filing, I.R.C.P. 4(b)(2) generally requires dismissal without prejudice unless good cause supports an extension. The statewide Idaho service overview covers the full rule.
Once served, a defendant generally has 21 days to answer under I.R.C.P. 12(a). Subpoenas under I.R.C.P. 45 may be served by any non-party at least 18, and an attendance fee and mileage must be tendered if the witness asks for them. Hearing and trial subpoenas reach anywhere in Idaho. These are summaries, not legal advice, and the limits on what a PI may do in Idaho explain how field work stays lawful.

Serving the State, Its Agencies and People Held Near Kuna
As the capital, Boise sees a steady flow of cases against state agencies and local governments. I.R.C.P. 4(d)(4) generally requires that papers naming the State of Idaho be served by delivering two copies to the Attorney General or an assistant attorney general, while counties, cities and districts are served through their chief executive officer, secretary or clerk plus any statutory step. Note too that Boise County, seated in Idaho City, is a different county from Ada and starts at $150 on our Fourth District rate table.
South of Kuna, the Idaho Department of Correction runs several prisons along South Pleasant Valley Road, including the Idaho State Correctional Institution and the Idaho Maximum Security Institution. Serving a person held there has to be arranged with the facility, and we coordinate with counsel before any visit. Questions about conditions inside are a separate matter handled through correctional facility abuse investigations, and our Kuna private investigators cover related work in the south county.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a process server in Boise need a license?
No. Boise serves need no state license, because Idaho does not issue one. Under I.R.C.P. 4(c)(2), a summons may generally be served by an officer authorized by law or by any person over 18 who is not a party to the case. Delator Field Services adds its own written documentation standard, and our Meridian investigators handle related field work just west of Boise.
How much does it cost to serve papers in Boise?
Routine service in Ada County has a published starting rate of $125, and Canyon County also starts at $125. Urgent therefore starts at $188, Rush at $250 and Same Day Rush at $375. The final price depends on the address, the deadline and the papers, and it is confirmed in writing before the first attempt.
Where do I file the return for a Boise serve?
With the clerk of the court that issued the papers, which is not always in Boise. Ada County cases are filed at the courthouse at 200 W. Front Street, federal cases with the clerk at 550 W. Fort Street, and cases from other counties with that county's clerk. We note the issuing court on the affidavit so it reaches the right office.
Can papers be left with a roommate in Boise?
Possibly. I.R.C.P. 4(d)(1)(B) generally allows copies to be left at the defendant's dwelling or usual place of abode with someone at least 18 years old who resides there. A roommate who lives there may qualify, while a guest or a building manager generally does not. The affidavit names or describes whoever accepted the papers so the court can judge.
How do I serve a lawsuit against a state agency in Boise?
When the State of Idaho is a defendant, I.R.C.P. 4(d)(4) generally requires delivering two copies to the Attorney General or an assistant attorney general. Counties, cities and other subdivisions are served through their chief executive officer, secretary or clerk, plus any statutory requirement. Counsel should confirm the correct recipient, and we document the delivery in the affidavit.
Can you serve someone at work in downtown Boise?
Yes, when building security and the employer's rules allow a visitor to reach the person. We ask politely, avoid scenes and record who received the papers. If the business itself is the defendant, I.R.C.P. 4(d)(3) generally calls for service on an officer, managing or general agent, or registered agent, and employee background checks are a separate service for employers.
What happens if the Boise defendant is never found?
The case cannot proceed against that defendant until service is made or the court authorizes an alternative. Under Idaho Code 5-508, publication may be allowed when a defendant cannot be found after due diligence or is concealing themselves, and 5-509 sets four consecutive weekly notices. Our attempt log supports that showing, and debtor locates in Idaho often find a current address first.
Do you serve papers in Garden City, Eagle and Kuna?
Yes. Garden City, Eagle, Kuna, Star and Meridian are all in Ada County, so Routine service starts at the same $125 published rate as Boise. Star crosses into Canyon County, which also starts at $125. We confirm the county of each address because it decides which clerk receives the return.
How long does a Boise defendant have to respond?
Generally 21 days after service of the summons and complaint under I.R.C.P. 12(a), although some proceedings set their own schedule. Eviction cases move much faster, with trial generally set within 12 days of filing in nonpayment cases. Counsel should calendar the exact deadline from the service date on our affidavit, and Idaho record research for counsel can help confirm filing details.
Is Delator Group a Boise company?
No. Delator Group is a licensed Tennessee private investigation firm headquartered in Nashville, and it has no office in Idaho. It coordinates service in Boise and across Ada County through vetted servers working to one documentation standard, and the Idaho investigators overview describes the firm's investigative work in the state.
