Quick answer
How do I hire a process server in Prince William County?
Send the filed papers, the defendant's known addresses and the date your case turns on. We confirm the address is in the county rather than Manassas or Manassas Park, quote the tier in writing and log every attempt. Routine work starts at a published $125, and our Manassas service page covers addresses inside that city.
01Local service landscape
Half a Million Residents and Two Cities That Are Not Part of the County
Prince William counted 482,205 residents in 2020 and an estimated 502,966 in 2025 (secondary). Its eastern half follows I-95 and US 1 through Woodbridge, Dale City and Dumfries, while the west spreads along I-66 to Gainesville and Haymarket. Manassas and Manassas Park sit in the middle as independent cities. We sort each address by locality before quoting, and the Virginia rate map by county lists both cities separately.
The county courthouse is an oddity worth knowing. It stands on county land surrounded by the City of Manassas, and the Circuit Court there serves the county and both cities. A filing caption may say Manassas whether the defendant lives in the city or in a county subdivision a few miles away. We check the property address, not the mailing line, so the return names the right place. Our Manassas Park and Manassas coverage handles the city side.
- Commuter suburbs along I-95 and US 1
- Newer subdivisions around Gainesville and Bristow
- Waterfront towns on the Occoquan and the Potomac
- Open land around Nokesville and the western county
02Attorneys and law firms
Serving for Lee Avenue Litigators and Firms Up the Interstate
Lawyers who practice in the 31st Circuit file on Lee Avenue, and many also take cases in Fairfax, Stafford and the Alexandria federal courthouse. They want the same things from service everywhere: one point of contact, a note after each attempt and a return that needs no correction. We set those expectations in writing at intake, as our attorney service standards for Virginia describe.
Out-of-state firms often have a Prince William defendant who works at a nearby federal installation, a distribution center or a regional employer along the interstates. When the case belongs to another state's court, we deliver under its rule and shape the affidavit to fit, as our cross-border paperwork page explains. For co-defendants in Fairfax, we coordinate through Fairfax County process service under the same quote.
03Evasive and hard-to-serve
Slug Lines, Shift Work and a Town Inside a Marine Base
Many residents leave before sunrise for jobs closer to Washington, and some return after dark. A defendant who is never home on weekday evenings may be easier to find on a Saturday morning, since Virginia bars civil service on Sunday under Va. Code § 8.01-289. We schedule attempts across days and hours that counsel approves and log the exact time of each one. Our service plan for evasive Virginia defendants describes that approach.
Marine Corps Base Quantico spans southern Prince William, northern Stafford and part of Fauquier, and the town of Quantico can be reached only through the base, by rail or by river. Base access is controlled by the command; we coordinate with counsel and, where the command allows, through its designated process. When a defendant at an ordinary address simply avoids the door, our guide to substituted and posted service explains the next steps.
- Saturday attempts when weekday evenings fail
- Base addresses handled through the command
- Townhouse parking lots and shared entrances noted
- Every exchange at the door written into the log
04Family, tenancy, claims and witnesses
Divorce, Custody, Rental Cases and Witnesses in Prince William
A Prince William divorce begins with a complaint in the Circuit Court on Lee Avenue, while custody and support petitions start in the county's J&DR court. Virginia lets a spouse accept service by a signed, sworn proof of service or a notarized waiver under Va. Code § 20-99.1:1, which can be easier than a doorstep delivery. Our Virginia divorce papers service page covers both routes.
Landlords bring unlawful detainer cases in the General District Court, and the summons may be delivered by a private server under Va. Code § 8.01-126 as long as service is made at least 10 days before the return day. The Sheriff alone executes the writ of eviction. That court also hears small claims up to $5,000, described on our small claims delivery page, and witnesses are reached through Virginia subpoena service.
05Documentation and challenges
What a Prince William Judge Will Look For in the Return
A private server's return in Virginia has to show more than a signature. Va. Code § 8.01-325 calls for an affidavit that the server is qualified, the date and manner of service, the name of the person served, a note that a private server made the service, and the server's contact details. It is due at the clerk's office within 72 hours. Our how-to on Virginia service of process lists each element.
If a defendant moves to quash, the questions are usually factual. Was the person at the door a household family member at least 16 years old, or a visiting friend? Was the posted copy placed at the main entrance? Our logs answer those questions with times and descriptions written at the moment. Where service keeps failing, what Virginia allows when someone dodges service outlines the options counsel may weigh.
06Virginia service rules
The Virginia Rules That Govern Every Prince William Serve
Va. Code § 8.01-293 allows a sheriff or any person 18 or older who is not a party or otherwise interested in the subject matter to serve process; a person in that category who charges a fee is a private process server. The Code sets no licensing or registration program for them. DFS assigns servers who meet that standard, and each return says so under oath. The Virginia rules on who may serve summarize the statute.
Timing matters too. Under Va. Code § 8.01-275.1, service within 12 months of filing is timely, and later service needs a due-diligence finding by the court. A defendant generally has 21 days after service to respond in circuit court under Rule 3:8(a). Writs of eviction, levies and capiases stay with officers. To check whether a paper suits a private server, reach DFS about a Prince William case.
07Local angle
Two Interstates, Two Sets of Express Lanes
Prince William is bracketed by tolled lanes. The 95 Express Lanes run through the eastern county and were extended south to US 17 at Fredericksburg in late 2023, while the I-66 Express Lanes outside the Beltway reach US 29 in Gainesville. We group attempts on one side of the county at a time instead of crossing between the corridors at rush hour, and southern stops tie into service in Stafford County.
Growth on the western side means new streets, model homes and builder addresses that some map tools do not yet recognize. We confirm the lot, the building and the house number on arrival and record them in the return. Delator Group's background explains why that level of detail became our standard. Defendants who moved toward Loudoun are served through our Loudoun County page, and those near the Rappahannock through Fredericksburg city coverage.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
My defendant's address says Manassas. Is that the county?
Not necessarily. Manassas and Manassas Park are independent cities, and many county subdivisions also use Manassas mailing addresses. All three localities share the 31st Circuit courthouse on Lee Avenue, but the sheriff and the rate can differ. We check the property's locality before we quote and name it correctly in the return.
What does a Prince William serve cost?
The published Routine starting rate in Prince William County is $125. Urgent service runs 1.5 times Routine, Rush runs two times and Same Day Rush runs three times. Your price reflects the address, the deadline and how many people need service, and we confirm it in writing before the first attempt is made.
Do I have to use the Sheriff in Prince William?
No. Va. Code § 8.01-293 lets any adult 18 or older who is not a party or interested in the case serve most civil process, in addition to the sheriff. Officers keep certain tasks, including executing writs of eviction and serving protective orders. Our statewide guide to Virginia service explains the difference.
Can you serve someone who lives or works on Quantico?
Access to Marine Corps Base Quantico is controlled by the command. Navy and Marine Corps regulations let commanding officers permit service and designate a meeting place, such as the legal office. We coordinate with counsel and follow the command's process where it allows service; we never claim a right to enter the base.
Can a Woodbridge summons be served on a weekend?
Saturday service is allowed and often useful for commuters. Sunday service of civil process is barred by Va. Code § 8.01-289, with narrow exceptions that do not apply to ordinary lawsuits. We plan Saturday attempts in advance with counsel, often in the morning before errands begin, and record them like any other visit in the log.
What if the defendant is never home when you visit?
Va. Code § 8.01-296 allows substituted service on a family member 16 or older at the usual abode and, if that fails, posting at the main entrance, with counsel mailing a copy and filing a certificate at least 10 days before default. Our Prince William-area evasive defendant notes describe how we document each try.
Who serves the eviction writ in Prince William?
Only a sheriff or high constable may execute a writ of possession or eviction under Va. Code § 8.01-293(B), and the officer gives the tenant at least 72 hours' notice. DFS serves the unlawful detainer summons only, at least 10 days before the return day. See our unlawful detainer service guide.
How are Prince William companies served?
A Virginia corporation can be served through an officer, director or registered agent under Va. Code § 8.01-299; for a Virginia LLC, the statute points to the registered agent. If no registered agent can be found, the Clerk of the State Corporation Commission becomes the agent, and that filing goes through the SCC Clerk's office. Our Virginia business service page walks through each route for Prince William companies.
How long does a Prince William defendant have to answer?
In circuit court, generally 21 days after service of the summons and complaint under Rule 3:8(a), and the summons itself states that deadline. General district court cases are set by the return date on the warrant. We send proof back promptly so counsel knows the exact date service was completed and can calendar the deadline.
Do you serve papers for out-of-state courts here?
Yes. Papers from another state's court are generally served under that court's rules, and we tailor the affidavit to them. For discovery in a foreign case, the subpoena is first issued by the clerk of the Virginia circuit court where discovery will occur, and we then serve that Virginia subpoena. See our subpoena delivery page.
