Quick answer
How do I hire a process server in Charleston County?
Send the filed papers, the case number, every address and the date you are working toward. We confirm the document can be served privately in that Charleston County court, quote the tier and price in writing and plan attempts around bridge and island access. Routine starts at a published $125, and our Charleston city page covers the peninsula.
01Local service landscape
Eighteen Municipalities Strung Along Rivers, Marsh and Ocean
Charleston County holds about 436,200 people across 18 municipalities, several of them islands, and a few that spill into Berkeley or Dorchester. North Charleston alone spans three counties, and the city of Charleston reaches into Berkeley County on Daniel Island. Before quoting, we confirm which county a parcel sits in, because that decides the magistrate and sheriff involved. The North Charleston service page covers the three-county city in more depth.
Water sets the schedule here. I-26 ends at US 17 in Charleston, I-526 loops from West Ashley through North Charleston to Mount Pleasant over the Cooper and Wando rivers, and the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge carries US 17 between the peninsula and Mount Pleasant with weekday-morning congestion. We sequence attempts so a server is not crossing a bridge at its worst hour. The statewide South Carolina hub explains how we route across the other counties.
- Peninsula, West Ashley and James Island
- Mount Pleasant, Isle of Palms and Sullivan's Island
- North Charleston and the I-26 corridor
- Johns, Wadmalaw, Kiawah and Seabrook islands to the south
02Attorneys and law firms
Broad Street Practice and Clients Who Ship Through the Port
Charleston's legal community clusters near Broad and Meeting streets, where the county Judicial Center and two federal court buildings stand close together. Firms there expect a summons delivered with its complaint, an affidavit that mirrors the caption and attempt reports in writing as they happen. The intake checklist on our law firm services page lists what helps on a Lowcountry file.
Port of Charleston terminals sit throughout the county, including Wando Welch in Mount Pleasant, Leatherman and two others in North Charleston, and Columbus Street and Union Pier in Charleston. Cases involving carriers, freight forwarders and their employees often originate out of state. We match the South Carolina delivery and affidavit to the issuing court's rule for service outside its state, as described on our page for papers from other states.
Delator Group is a Tennessee firm headquartered in Nashville and has no office in Charleston County. Serves may be carried out by vetted servers Delator contracts with, under one written documentation standard, and every server assigned is at least 18 and not a party to, or an attorney in, the case. You can learn about Delator Group before engaging us, or send a Charleston County question first.
03Evasive and hard-to-serve
Island Gates, Short-Term Rentals and Shift Work at the Base
Resort islands, private communities and short-term rentals make some Charleston County addresses hard to reach at the door. Gate rules differ by community, and we do not assume any particular arrangement until we have checked it. A defendant in a vacation property may also be home only on weekends. Our notes on difficult defendants describe how we vary days and hours and record each observation.
Joint Base Lindsey Graham (formerly Joint Base Charleston), renamed on Aug. 10, 2026, has its air base portion mainly in North Charleston. Service at an installation depends on the base's access rules, and defaults against servicemembers raise Servicemembers Civil Relief Act questions for counsel. When a defendant cannot be found in South Carolina after due diligence, the court or clerk of common pleas may order publication, as our publication service guide explains.
- Private island communities with their own gate rules
- Vacation rentals occupied mainly on weekends
- Military households tied to the joint base
- Port and hospital shift workers on rotating hours
04Family, landlord, claim and witness papers
Family Court at 100 Broad, Magistrate Claims and Rental Cases
Divorce, custody and support filings go to Charleston County Family Court, and their summons and complaint are served under SCRCP 4 like any civil case. A cooperative spouse can sign the Acceptance of Service form (SCCA 400.03) instead. Contempt rules to show cause are other process under Rule 4(c), which means the sheriff, another officer or a person the court designates; we do not treat them as routine. The guide to serving divorce papers in South Carolina sets out the options.
Magistrate courts in the county hear civil claims of $7,500 or less, and SCRMC 6(c) lets a qualifying private adult serve their summonses. Our magistrate court service page covers those claims. Rental housing is a large part of the Charleston market, but the rule to vacate is typically routed through the sheriff's office, and a writ of ejectment is carried out only by a constable or deputy sheriff. We serve the rule only where the magistrate court confirms private service is accepted, never post or execute a writ, and do serve rent and damage suits. Our landlord service page has more.
05Documentation and challenges
An Affidavit That Answers the Questions Asked on Broad Street
Every affidavit we return follows SCRCP 4(g): the date, time and place of service and the name and address of the person served, or a description when the name is unknown. The attempt log behind it shows each earlier visit, including the bridge crossings that explain timing. If the deadline is close, our rush service options shorten the timeline, and the affidavit still carries the same detail.
Service disputes in Charleston County often involve shared or seasonal housing. If a server left papers with someone at the home, the affidavit has to show that the person lived there and was of suitable age and discretion, not a visiting renter or a contractor. A server who records those facts at the door spares counsel a guessing game later. The plain-English service guide shows how each method is proved.
06South Carolina service rules
The South Carolina Rules Behind a Lowcountry Serve
The first sentence of SCRCP 4(c) lets the sheriff, a deputy, or anyone 18 or older who is not a party or a lawyer in the action serve a summons. Orders, rules and writs generally go to the sheriff or another officer, or to a person the court designates. South Carolina has no statewide license for private process servers, and DFS claims no South Carolina license, appointment or list placement. The guide on who qualifies to serve in South Carolina covers this in detail.
A summons can be delivered personally, left at the dwelling with a resident of suitable age and discretion, handed to an authorized agent, or sent by restricted-delivery certified mail or a qualifying commercial delivery service under Rules 4(d)(8) and 4(d)(9). The mail and courier routes support a default only when the defendant signed. Actual service generally has to occur within 120 days of filing if the limitations period has run (SCRCP 3(a)). Your attorney can confirm how this applies.
07Local angle
Hurricane Season and the I-26 Lane Reversal
Storm season changes how Charleston County roads behave, though not the published figures on our Charleston-area rate list. During a hurricane evacuation, I-26 lanes between I-526 and I-77 can be reversed to carry traffic inland, as happened for Hurricane Florence in September 2018. When a storm is forecast, we tell counsel early if an attempt window is at risk and document any lost day in the log.
The other local quirk is the county line. Goose Creek, Summerville, Lincolnville and North Charleston each have parts in more than one county, and Daniel Island belongs to the city of Charleston but sits in Berkeley County. When a co-defendant turns out to live across the line, Berkeley County service or Dorchester County deliveries run under the same written quote, and our Mount Pleasant page covers the East Cooper side.
- Clerk of Court: 100 Broad St., Ste 106
- Federal Waring Center: 83 Meeting St.
- U.S. District Courthouse: 85 Broad St.
- Daniel Island: city of Charleston, Berkeley County

Process Servers Near Charleston County
Lowcountry cases often name people on both sides of a county line. Berkeley County lies north across the Cooper River, Dorchester County sits northwest toward Summerville, and Beaufort County is down US 17 toward Hilton Head. Midlands addresses go to Richland County papers, and Grand Strand defendants are handled through Horry County papers and attempts. Each page follows the same written quote, logged attempts and signed affidavit.
FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Who is allowed to serve a summons in Charleston County?
Under SCRCP 4(c), the sheriff, a deputy or any person 18 or older who is not a party or an attorney in the case may serve a summons. Court orders and rules generally go to the sheriff or a court-designated person. Our South Carolina service overview explains how DFS handles each paper type.
What does a Charleston process server cost?
Charleston County carries a $125 published Routine starting rate, and the faster tiers scale from it: Urgent at 1.5 times, Rush at twice and Same Day Rush at three times. The final figure depends on the address, the island or bridge involved, the number of defendants and the deadline, and it is confirmed in writing first.
Can you serve someone on Kiawah or another resort island?
Yes, with planning. Island and private communities set their own access rules, and we check them before an attempt rather than assume. If a defendant is only present on weekends or seasonally, we schedule accordingly. Every attempt, including a refused entry at a gate, is written into the log so counsel has a full record.
Will you serve a rule to vacate in Charleston County?
Not as a standard service. Rules to vacate are usually served through the sheriff's office, and only a constable or deputy sheriff carries out a writ of ejectment. We take the rule only when the magistrate court tells us private service is acceptable there. Our ejectment process guide describes the ten-day response period.
How long does a Charleston County defendant have to answer?
In most cases, 30 days after the complaint is served (SCRCP 12(a)). The self-represented divorce summons states 35 days when service was by restricted-delivery certified mail. Magistrate court answers are due within 30 days from the first day after service. A precise service date in the affidavit keeps those deadlines clear for both sides.
Are Sunday attempts allowed in Charleston?
Generally yes. S.C. Code 15-9-17 permits a process server to serve judicial documents on Sunday, except on a person going to, attending or leaving a church or other religious service. We plan any Sunday attempt with that limit in mind, and only when counsel approves it in advance. Each one is logged with its exact time.
How do you serve a shipping or logistics company?
Usually through its registered agent, or an officer or managing agent, under SCRCP 4(d)(3). An out-of-state corporation not authorized to do business in South Carolina may be served through the Secretary of State as statutory agent (S.C. Code 15-9-245). For a domestic corporation with no reachable agent, a court-ordered mailing to the corporate secretary is possible. The South Carolina business service page lists the routes.
Do you handle federal papers from the Charleston Division?
Yes. Summonses and subpoenas from the Waring Center or the courthouse at 85 Broad are served under the federal rules, which also allow state-law methods. Beaufort division cases are heard in Charleston as well, so we can coordinate Hilton Head or Bluffton defendants with a Charleston federal file under one quote.
What if my deposition witness lives in Mount Pleasant?
Mount Pleasant is in Charleston County, so a Charleston-issued subpoena fits. SCRCP 45(b)(2) requires a non-party deposition subpoena to be issued from and served in the county where the witness resides, works or regularly does business in person. Any non-party adult may serve it. See our witness subpoena delivery page.
What if a hurricane interrupts service?
We tell counsel as soon as a forecast puts an attempt window at risk, and any lost day is noted in the log with the reason. The 120-day period under SCRCP 3(a) keeps running, so your attorney may want to weigh other routes or ask the court for relief. Our guide for avoided or delayed service covers options.
