Skip tracing is the process of locating a person who has moved, gone quiet or is deliberately avoiding contact, often called a skip. Investigators use public records, proprietary databases, interviews and field checks to confirm a current address, employer and vehicle, so a debtor, witness or party can be served, contacted or pursued through the courts.

A database result is a lead, not a location
Anyone can buy a data report. The trouble is that those reports are often months or years out of date, mix up people with similar names, and list every address a person has ever touched. Serving papers or filing a garnishment based on a stale address costs time, money and sometimes credibility with the court.
Delator treats every data result as a hypothesis to test. Most of our locate requests come from law firms and collection professionals who need to move a case forward. A confirmed address lets you serve a complaint, schedule a deposition, issue a subpoena to a witness, or support a motion for alternative service when a defendant keeps dodging. A confirmed employer can support wage garnishment after judgment.

What a Tennessee investigator can and cannot do when locating someone
Private investigators in Tennessee are licensed through the Tennessee Private Investigation and Polygraph Commission under the Private Investigators Licensing and Regulatory Act (Tenn. Code Ann. § 62-26-201 et seq.). A licensed investigator can research public records, use lawfully obtained commercial data, speak with people who are willing to talk, and observe from public places.
Investigators generally cannot obtain phone records or bank records without legal process, impersonate law enforcement, trespass on private property, or place a GPS tracker on a vehicle they have no ownership interest in. If your case needs records that require a subpoena, we will tell your attorney what to request. Your attorney can advise on how these limits apply to your matter.

Yes. Locating a person through public records, lawfully obtained commercial data, interviews and observation from public places is generally legal when done by a licensed investigator. What is not allowed includes pretexting to obtain protected phone or bank records, impersonating law enforcement, trespassing, and placing a GPS tracker on a vehicle the client has no ownership interest in.
What is the difference between a skip trace and a people-search website?
A people-search site gives you whatever its database holds, which may be outdated or belong to someone with a similar name. A professional skip trace uses that data as a starting point, cross-checks it against current records, and then confirms the result in the field. You receive one verified location rather than a list of possibilities.
Can you find someone with only a name?
Sometimes, but more identifiers make the search faster and more reliable. A date of birth, last known address, prior employer, relatives' names, a vehicle plate or a case number all help narrow the field. Common names in large counties like Davidson or Shelby benefit most from extra detail. Share whatever you have and we will tell you what is realistic.
Will the person know they are being located?
In most cases, no. Records research and field verification are done discreetly, and we do not tell the subject who is looking for them. The exception is when you ask us to make contact, such as in a family reconnection, in which case we plan that approach with you and respect the located person's wishes.
