Quick answer

What can a dating background check in Mississippi reveal?

A careful check confirms the person's legal name, age and address history, then searches Mississippi circuit, chancery and county court filings, justice court dockets, federal indexes and the state sex offender registry. It can also expose reused photos and inconsistent stories. Our stalking response page explains what to do if contact has already become unwanted.

01Why people call

Why Mississippians Research a Partner Before Getting Serious

Most people who call us are not suspicious of a crime. They met someone through an app, at a casino weekend on the Coast or through friends in another county, and a few details do not line up. A partner says they are divorced but avoids naming the county. A profile claims a job at a Gulf Coast shipyard that nobody can confirm. Our job is to answer those questions quietly with records, and our non-married relationship investigations cover the cases where a dating partner may be seeing someone else.

Others call because the stakes have risen. A partner wants to move in, merge finances or spend time with children from a prior relationship. At that point a basic identity check is not enough, and a deeper look at violence, protective orders and money trouble makes sense. We scope that depth in writing before research begins. When the relationship spans state lines, as it often does between DeSoto County and Memphis, our out-of-state relationship investigations extend the search into Tennessee and beyond.

02What the report covers

Identity, Court History and Registry Status in One Report

Every dating check starts with identity. We confirm the legal name, date of birth and address history behind the profile, because a wrong identity makes every later search worthless. Then we search circuit, chancery and county court filings through the Mississippi Electronic Courts system, which reached all 82 counties in 2025, and ask justice and municipal court clerks about lower-court dockets. Federal criminal and bankruptcy indexes come next. Our Mississippi rate schedule shows what the $102 basic check and the $300 deep-dive check each include.

The Department of Public Safety publishes Mississippi's sex offender registry online, and we check it along with other states where the person lived. Registry results are matched against identifiers, not just names. Divorce files are a special case: MEC does not offer remote access to divorce, custody or support matters, so confirming whether a partner's marriage actually ended means asking the chancery clerk in the right county. An undisclosed marriage matters, because bigamy is one of the twelve statutory divorce grounds under Miss. Code Ann. § 93-5-1, and our married spouse investigations pick up from there.

  • Legal name, age and address history
  • Mississippi and out-of-state court filings
  • Sex offender registry checks by identifier
  • Chancery records for marriages and divorces

03Scams and fake profiles

Romance Scams, Crypto Requests and Borrowed Photos

Romance fraud follows a familiar script. The person is overseas on a contract job, or offshore on a rig, or deployed, and cannot video call. Within weeks there is a customs fee, a medical bill or an investment opportunity in cryptocurrency. We test the profile's photos against public sources, look for the same images under other names and check whether the employer, unit or vessel exists. When money has already moved, our cryptocurrency fraud investigations trace what can still be traced and build a record for your bank and for law enforcement.

Older Mississippians are frequent targets, and families often call after a parent has sent several transfers to someone they have never met. Identity theft is a felony under Miss. Code Ann. § 97-19-85, and false statements used to obtain money can support other charges, but recovery depends on acting quickly and documenting everything. Our elder fraud response team handles those matters with the family's attorney, and the broader scam investigation service covers schemes that start on dating apps and move to text messages or wire transfers.

04When contact turns unwanted

Stalking, Cyberstalking and Protective Orders Under Mississippi Law

Mississippi's stalking statute, Miss. Code Ann. § 97-3-107, generally covers a course of conduct of two or more acts, including following, confronting and repeated contact by phone, mail or electronic message, that the actor knows or should know would make a reasonable person fear for their safety. Separately, § 97-45-15 makes cyberstalking a felony, reaching electronic threats and repeated harassing messages. We document dates, numbers, accounts and screenshots so counsel can decide whether either statute fits. Our cyberbullying and online harassment work handles the cases built mainly on messages and posts.

Protective orders run through Chapter 93-21. A petition may be filed in municipal, justice, county or chancery court, and temporary orders from municipal and justice courts generally last up to 30 days, while final orders come from chancery or county court. Victims of domestic violence, sexual assault or stalking can also ask the Attorney General's Address Confidentiality Program for a substitute mailing address. We do not give legal advice on those steps, but our Rankin County investigations team regularly prepares evidence packets that counsel files in Brandon.

  • Two or more acts form a course of conduct
  • Cyberstalking is charged as a felony
  • Temporary and final protective orders differ
  • Substitute address through the Attorney General

05Children and households

Deeper Research Before a Partner Spends Time With Your Children

A parent bringing a new partner into the home faces two questions at once: whether the children are safe, and how the relationship will look to a chancellor if custody is ever revisited. Moral fitness and the stability of the home are both Albright factors, and since July 1, 2026, Mississippi law reportedly presumes joint custody, a presumption a parent can rebut only with strong evidence. Our custody investigation guide explains how chancellors weigh that kind of information.

For this situation we usually recommend the $300 deep-dive check plus targeted field hours at $100 per hour. That covers protective orders, family-court filings the chancery clerk will release, criminal history in every state of residence and a careful review of public social media. We never contact the partner's former spouse or employer without telling you first, and any lawful field observation is approved by you in advance. If findings point to a risk, the report is written so that a family law attorney can use it, and our missing family member team helps when a child has already been taken out of contact.

06Where we stop

What We Will and Will Not Do in a Dating Investigation

Mississippi is a one-party consent state under Miss. Code Ann. § 41-29-531, so a person may record a conversation they are part of, but intercepting someone else's calls or messages is a crime, and disclosing intercepted communications is a felony. We do not access a partner's phone, email or social accounts, and we do not ask clients to. Mississippi has no statute aimed specifically at private GPS tracking, yet covert tracking can still support a stalking or privacy claim, so we do not place trackers on vehicles a client has no right to. Our recording law guide covers the details.

We also decline work that looks like an attempt to find someone who has chosen to cut off contact, such as a former partner in a shelter or someone using a substitute address. Every engagement starts with a conversation about purpose, and if the purpose is control rather than safety, we say no. That screening protects clients too, because evidence gathered unlawfully tends to hurt the person who collected it, a point our attorney support team makes to counsel as well. Our Mississippi lawful-practice guide sets out the lines in plain language.

07Local patterns

College Towns, Military Communities and the Coast

Some requests follow Mississippi's geography. Oxford and Starkville are university towns where students and young professionals meet through apps, and families sometimes ask us to confirm that a new partner is enrolled or employed where they say. Hattiesburg sits beside Camp Shelby, and Biloxi is home to Keesler Air Force Base, so claimed military service is a frequent detail to verify, which we do through lawful public sources and the person's own documentation. Our Lafayette County investigations page covers Oxford-area courthouse work.

On the Gulf Coast, casino resorts and seasonal work bring visitors from Louisiana, Alabama and beyond, and relationships that start on a weekend trip can move fast. When the other person lives out of state, we search that state's courts and registry as well as Mississippi's, all under one written scope. These dating background checks in Mississippi are confidential, and we never alert the subject. Our Harrison County team handles Gulfport and Biloxi records, and our Forrest County page covers the Pine Belt.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is it legal to run a background check on someone I am dating?

Generally yes, when the research uses public records and lawful sources and is not for a purpose the FCRA regulates, such as employment, housing or credit decisions. What is not lawful is accessing the person's accounts, intercepting their communications or using the results to harass them. We confirm your purpose at the start, and our guide to what investigators can legally do explains the limits.

Will the person know I had them checked?

No. A basic or deep-dive check relies on records and public sources and does not involve contacting the subject. If a step would require contacting someone who might tell them, such as a former employer, we explain the risk and wait for your approval. Reports are delivered only to you, and we do not discuss engagements with anyone else.

Can you find out if my partner is still married?

Often, yes. Divorce files in Mississippi are handled by chancery courts, and MEC does not give remote access to divorce matters, so we request records from the chancery clerk in the county where a divorce would have been filed. We also check other states where the person lived. When the answer matters in a case of your own, our hidden assets guide covers what comes next.

What if my online match refuses to video call?

That is one of the most common warning signs of romance fraud, especially when combined with a story about working overseas, offshore or in the military and a request for money. Do not send funds while we look. We check whether the photos appear elsewhere under other names and whether the claimed employer, unit or vessel exists, and we report what the evidence shows.

Does the sex offender registry show everything?

No registry is complete. The Mississippi registry run by the Department of Public Safety lists people required to register under state law, but it may not reflect a recent move, an out-of-state conviction or an offense that did not require registration. That is why we pair registry checks with court searches in every state where the person lived and confirm identity before reporting a match.

Can you check someone who lives in Louisiana, Alabama or Tennessee?

Yes. We search the courts and registries of each state where the person has lived under one written scope. Coast relationships often reach New Orleans and Mobile, and north Mississippi relationships often reach Memphis and Huntsville. Our Tennessee-to-Mississippi coverage overview explains how we coordinate work across state lines from our Nashville headquarters.

What should I do if the person starts threatening me?

If you are in danger, call 911 first. Then preserve every message, voicemail and post without replying, and talk to an attorney or advocate about a protective order. We can organize that evidence into a timeline counsel can file. Mississippi stalking and cyberstalking statutes may apply, and our online harassment page describes how we attribute anonymous accounts.

How much does a dating background check cost?

The basic remote check is $102 and suits most early-stage questions. The deep-dive check is $300 and fits a partner who is moving in, meeting your children or asking to combine finances. Field work, such as a chancery clerk pull or lawful observation, is $100 per hour. You receive the scope and price in writing before we start, and there is no retainer to burn through.

Do you need a state license to do this work in Mississippi?

Mississippi does not license private investigators at the state level, though cities and counties may require a general business privilege license. Delator Group is a licensed Tennessee private investigation firm and holds itself to Tennessee's standard everywhere it works. Our guide to hiring without a state license lists questions to ask any provider.

Can you help me keep a new partner from finding my address?

Yes. Many clients want the same protection they are seeking about the other person. We review what data brokers, people-search sites and public records reveal about you, submit opt-outs and harden your accounts. Survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault or stalking may also qualify for the Attorney General's Address Confidentiality Program, which provides a substitute mailing address for use with public agencies.
