Quick answer

What does a scam investigation in Idaho involve?

It preserves the messages, payments and documents, identifies the people and accounts behind the scheme through lawful sources, and determines whether funds or assets can still be reached. The resulting file supports a police report, an Attorney General complaint, a civil claim or a Consumer Protection Act demand. Our Idaho investigation pricing shows the minimum and hourly rate.

01Growth brings targets

Why Scams Are Finding Idaho Residents and Businesses

Rapid growth creates openings for fraud. Ada and Canyon counties together held about 821,000 residents in the 2025 Census estimate, Canyon County grew roughly 19 percent since 2020, and Bonner and Kootenai counties also expanded quickly. Newcomers searching for rentals, contractors and vehicles are ideal targets because they do not yet know who is reputable. Many Treasure Valley victims start with our Boise fraud investigators, and Canyon County clients often work through our Nampa investigators.

The state's universities add another group of targets. Boise State, the University of Idaho, Idaho State and BYU-Idaho bring tens of thousands of students who look for housing and part-time work online, the two areas where fake listings and fake job offers concentrate. Small businesses face invoice and payroll diversion schemes that arrive by email. Whatever the pattern, the first step is the same: preserve everything before the scammer deletes accounts. Our corporate investigations in Idaho handle the business side.

02Housing and home projects

Fake Rental Listings and Contractor Deposit Scams

Rental scams copy photos from a real listing, post them at an attractive price and ask for a deposit before a showing. The victim arrives to find another tenant or an owner who never listed the home. We trace the posting account, the payment method and the phone numbers, compare the photos with the original listing and identify the real owner as a witness. Landlords hit by impostors posing as their property manager benefit from our tenant background checks in Idaho when screening future applicants.

Contractor scams usually involve a large deposit for roofing, concrete, a fence or a remodel, followed by delays and silence. Some contractors are simply insolvent; others take deposits from many homeowners at once. We document the agreement, payments and communications, interview other customers using the credibility checks from our witness background work in Idaho, locate the contractor and research assets that might satisfy a judgment. When the contractor has left the area, our Idaho evasive person locates find them so they can be served with a lawsuit.

03Idaho Code 48-603 and 48-608

Using the Idaho Consumer Protection Act Against a Scammer

Idaho's Consumer Protection Act lists unfair and deceptive practices in Idaho Code § 48-603, including a catch-all for acts that are otherwise misleading, false or deceptive to the consumer. Under § 48-608, a buyer of goods or services with an ascertainable loss may generally recover actual damages or $1,000, whichever is greater, and a prevailing plaintiff receives reasonable attorney fees. Courts may award punitive damages for repeated or flagrant conduct. Our civil litigation investigators build the facts that make those claims practical.

A Consumer Protection Act claim needs a defendant who can be found and served. That is why identification and location come first in our work. The Attorney General's office also accepts reports through its Report Scams Idaho page, and a report with names, dates, amounts and screenshots is more useful than one without them. When a scheme involves a business partner or investor, our business partner background checks often reveal earlier ventures, judgments or name changes.

04Online sales and impostor calls

Marketplace Fraud, Impostor Calls and Fake Job Offers

Online marketplace fraud in Idaho often involves vehicles, trailers, farm and construction equipment, campers and event tickets. Sellers demand payment by app or wire, then disappear, or buyers send counterfeit cashier's checks for items listed by Idahoans. We link listing accounts, phone numbers, photos and payment handles to the people behind them. When equipment changed hands and later surfaced, our stolen asset tracing in Idaho follows where it went.

Impostor calls claim to be the sheriff's office, a utility, Medicare or a bank and demand immediate payment. Fake job offers, often aimed at students, send a check to deposit and ask the new hire to forward part of it. Both leave a trail of numbers, accounts and documents. Under Idaho Code § 18-2407, property obtained by false pretenses worth more than $1,000 is generally grand theft, and prosecutors decide on charges. Our lost contact tracing finds other victims who can strengthen a report.

05Invoices, payroll and insiders

Business Email Compromise and Invoice Diversion

Businesses lose money when a spoofed or compromised email tells the accounts payable team that a vendor's bank details have changed, or when an executive appears to order an urgent wire. Payroll diversion works the same way for employees' direct deposits. We reconstruct the email chain, identify the receiving accounts, interview staff and determine whether an insider helped. Our employee theft investigators step in when the evidence points inside the company.

Speed matters in these cases because receiving banks can sometimes hold funds if notified quickly through the company's bank and law enforcement. We prepare a concise package for the bank, police and the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center, then help management close the gaps that allowed the loss. Companies often follow an incident with a fraud risk audit in Idaho of payment approvals, vendor changes and email controls, and our Idaho compliance audits check whether policies are actually followed.

06Identity theft and public records

Identity Theft, Public Records and What We Can Lawfully Find

Some scams aim at identity rather than immediate cash. Idaho Code § 18-3126 addresses obtaining or recording another person's personal identifying information without authorization, intending to use it to obtain credit, money, goods or services. We help victims document accounts opened in their name, trace addresses used and identify people connected to the activity, then organize the material for police and creditors. Our personal information and OSINT services can also reduce what is exposed online.

Idaho's Public Records Act presumes government records are open, and agencies generally may not ask why a request is made. Under Idaho Code § 74-103, residents get a response within three working days, but nonresident requesters such as Delator get 21 days, extendable to 35. We plan record requests around that timing and tell clients when an Idaho resident's request would be faster. Our guide to lawful PI methods in Idaho explains the sources we use and the lines we do not cross.

07Claims, deadlines and collection

Small Claims, District Court and Realistic Recovery

Smaller losses can go to the small claims department of the magistrate division, which Idaho raised to $15,000 in 2026; confirm the effective date with the clerk. The magistrate division hears civil cases up to $10,000 by assignment, and district courts handle larger claims. Idaho Code § 5-218 generally allows three years for fraud claims, usually measured from discovery. A judgment is only as good as the defendant's assets, which our Idaho asset investigations identify before you spend on a lawsuit.

Delator coordinates service of the summons on the defendant anywhere in Idaho, with logged attempts and a signed affidavit, through our process serving in Idaho. When the scammer is overseas or anonymous, a lawsuit may not be practical, and we say so plainly. Our role then is to give police and federal agencies the clearest possible file. Clients weighing the cost against the loss can review our Idaho investigator cost guide before deciding.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can a private investigator help after I have been scammed?

Yes, within limits. We preserve evidence, identify the people and accounts behind the scheme where lawful sources allow, trace payments, find other victims and prepare a file for police, the Attorney General or counsel. We cannot arrest anyone, seize funds or access private accounts. Our work gives the people who can take those steps the facts they need.

Where do I report a scam in Idaho?

Report to local police or the sheriff, to the Idaho Attorney General through its Report Scams Idaho page and, for internet-based fraud, to the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center. Notify your bank or payment app immediately. A documented report is more likely to be acted on, and we can prepare one with you.

What does a scam investigation cost in Idaho?

Fraud matters carry a $2,000 minimum, and additional hours are billed at $100. A remote basic background check is $102 and a deep-dive background check is $300 if that is all you need. You approve the scope and total in writing before work begins. See our Idaho rates and minimums for details.

Can I sue a scammer under the Idaho Consumer Protection Act?

Possibly. Idaho Code § 48-608 generally allows a buyer with an ascertainable loss from a deceptive practice to recover actual damages or $1,000, whichever is greater, plus attorney fees if they prevail. The defendant must be identifiable and reachable. An attorney decides whether the claim is worth bringing, and our support for Idaho attorneys supplies the evidence.

A contractor took my deposit and disappeared. What can you do?

We document the agreement and payments, interview other customers, locate the contractor and research assets such as vehicles, equipment or property that might satisfy a judgment. With that file, counsel can send a demand or file suit, and we coordinate service. If the amount is within the small claims limit, you may be able to file yourself.

How long do I have to bring a fraud claim in Idaho?

Idaho Code § 5-218 generally allows three years for fraud claims, usually measured from discovery of the facts, while contract claims carry four or five years depending on whether the agreement was oral or written. Your attorney should confirm the deadline. Evidence fades much sooner, so start the work early.

Do you need a license to investigate scams in Idaho?

Idaho has no statewide private investigator license, though some cities, such as Chubbuck and Coeur d'Alene, regulate investigators or detective agents locally. Delator Group is a licensed Tennessee private investigation firm and applies that standard in Idaho, and we confirm local requirements before field work in those cities. Our Idaho guide to vetting investigators explains what to ask.

Will you contact the scammer directly?

Usually not. Contact can warn the scammer, prompt them to move funds or delete accounts, or expose you to more pressure. Any contact we recommend is coordinated with police or counsel first, and we always identify ourselves truthfully. We never pose as law enforcement or as another victim to obtain information.

Can you help my business after a wire went to the wrong account?

Yes. We reconstruct the email chain, identify receiving accounts, interview staff and look for insider involvement, then prepare a package for your bank, police and the FBI. Speed matters, so call your bank first. Afterward, a risk audit for Idaho businesses helps prevent a repeat, and our shock audits test controls unannounced.

What if the scammer is overseas?

Then a lawsuit may not be practical, and we will say so. We can still document the scheme, trace payments to the point they leave the United States and give police and federal agencies a clear file. Sometimes a U.S.-based participant, such as a person who received and forwarded funds, can be identified and pursued.
