Quick answer

Can an Idaho investigator follow a cheating spouse to another state?

Yes, with planning. The coverage has to respect each state's own rules on investigators, recording and trespass, and some neighboring states license investigators where Idaho does not. Delator coordinates the destination work so the report reads as one record. Our multi-state surveillance coordinators plan the handoffs, and travel is disclosed before anything is booked.

01Border geography

Six Neighboring States and a Canadian Border Shape Idaho Affairs

Idaho borders Washington and Oregon to the west, Nevada and Utah to the south, Montana and Wyoming to the east, and British Columbia to the north. For many North Idaho residents, another state is far closer than Boise. Kootenai County sits a short drive on I-90 from Spokane, Lewiston faces Clarkston across the river, and Latah County is part of the Pullman–Moscow combined statistical area. Our Lewiston affair investigators and Post Falls surveillance team cross those lines routinely.

Southern and eastern Idaho look in other directions. I-15 runs from Monida Pass at the Montana line through Idaho Falls and Pocatello to Utah, US-93 leaves Twin Falls for Jackpot, Nevada, and I-84 carries Treasure Valley traffic toward Oregon and Utah. Eastern Idaho households often have ties to western Wyoming as well, and our Wyoming investigations page explains how Delator works on that side. Each of these corridors creates a different kind of out-of-state infidelity investigations file.

02Air travel

Business Trips Out of Boise, Spokane and Regional Airports

Boise Airport serves southwestern Idaho, while Spokane International Airport, across the line in Washington, serves much of northern Idaho. Smaller airports with scheduled service operate in Idaho Falls, Pocatello, Twin Falls, Hailey, Lewiston and Pullman–Moscow. A spouse who flies out for a conference can be documented at departure: who drove them, whether anyone joined them at the terminal and which flight they boarded, all observed from public areas. Our Boise travel investigators handle most Treasure Valley departures.

The destination is where the evidence usually sits. Once we know the flight and the hotel, we arrange coverage at the other end, timed to the arrival and to the evenings when the spouse is off duty. That might mean a conference hotel in Salt Lake City, Denver or Las Vegas, or a lake rental in Montana. Our hotel stay surveillance methods apply at the destination, and our cross-state surveillance service handles the coordination and travel logistics.

03Legal differences

Different States, Different Rules for Investigators and Recording

Idaho's rules do not travel with the investigator. Idaho has no statewide private investigator license, but several neighboring states do license investigators, and their recording and privacy laws are not all as permissive as Idaho's one-party consent rule under Idaho Code § 18-6702. We plan out-of-state work so that it complies with the law where it happens, and we tell you in advance if a destination limits what can lawfully be documented. Our Idaho recording law overview explains the home-state baseline.

The same caution applies to the tools a suspicious spouse might reach for. A GPS device that might already be risky under Idaho's stalking statute, § 18-7906, can also violate the law of the state where the car is parked. Delator does not place trackers on vehicles it has no right to, in any state. When an attorney wants to know what kind of evidence will hold up across jurisdictions, our investigative consulting team helps plan the case before anyone travels.

04In court

Bringing Out-of-State Evidence Into an Idaho Divorce or Custody Case

Most of our clients' cases are filed in the magistrate division of their home Idaho county, even when the conduct happened elsewhere. Evidence of an affair can matter for spousal maintenance, because Idaho Code § 32-705 lists fault among its factors, and travel paid for with community funds may raise questions under the state's community property rules. We write reports so a family law attorney can follow every leg of the trip in order. Our Idaho attorney services desk works with counsel on how to present it.

Out-of-state facts also create service questions. If the spouse moved in with someone in another state, I.R.C.P. 4 generally allows service outside Idaho by the methods the rule permits, and Delator Field Services can coordinate it through our Idaho legal paper service with a signed affidavit. When the money behind the second life is the larger issue, our hidden assets guide for Idaho divorces explains what to look for in bank and card statements.

05Double lives

Second Households, Rotation Jobs and Long-Distance Relationships

Some out-of-state cases are not about a single trip. A spouse with a job that rotates them away for weeks, a trucking route or a seasonal assignment may have an apartment, a vehicle or a partner in another state. Before anyone travels, we research the records that usually reveal a second life: out-of-state addresses, vehicle registrations, utility connections, court filings and business records. A $300 deep-dive check through our multi-state background research covers address history across states.

When records point to a specific place, a short field operation confirms who lives there and how the spouse spends time there. We document arrivals, departures and shared routines from public places only. If the second household is supported with marital money, our Idaho asset investigators trace the payments, and if the marriage is ending, our married infidelity team brings the Idaho-side work together into one file.

When the Spouse Comes to Idaho From Somewhere Else

The direction can also run the other way. Clients outside Idaho call us when a spouse or partner says they are fishing, skiing or attending a meeting in Coeur d'Alene, Sun Valley, Boise or McCall. Resort towns are busy in season and quiet out of it, which changes how an investigator blends in. Our Coeur d'Alene resort investigators cover the lake and Panhandle properties, and our main Idaho investigations page explains how Delator assigns work across the state.

Distance inside Idaho surprises many visitors. Boise to Coeur d'Alene is roughly 380 to 390 miles, mostly on US-95, and the northern part of the state keeps Pacific Time while the south uses Mountain Time. A spouse who says they are spending the weekend in Idaho may be hours from where they claim. We plan coverage around those realities, quote times with the correct zone, and price the travel up front. Our statewide coverage map shows where Delator works.

07Price

What Out-of-State Infidelity Investigations Cost

Investigative time is billed at $100 per hour in Idaho and at the destination. Airfare, lodging, rental cars and mileage are quoted before anything is booked, and we recommend whichever is cheaper for you: sending an investigator with the subject or arranging coverage at the destination. Most trips need departure coverage, two or three evenings at the destination and confirmation of the return. The Idaho rate sheet lists the base figures.

Records research that often comes first is priced separately: $102 for a basic background check and $300 for a deep-dive across states. Everything is confirmed in writing, including the hours, the travel and the total, and no extra shift is added without your approval. For a fuller picture of how these budgets are built, see our guide to investigator costs in Idaho.

Statewide coverage

Out-of-State Cases Starting Anywhere in Idaho

Trips begin in every corner of the state. Bonner County clients work with our Sandpoint investigators, who know the routes toward Montana and Spokane. Eastern Idaho cases that head toward Wyoming or Utah go to our Idaho Falls private investigators, and Magic Valley trips toward Nevada start with our Twin Falls investigative team. Wherever the trip begins, the destination work is coordinated from one file with one point of contact, so you never have to manage several firms in several states yourself.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can you follow my spouse onto a plane?

We generally do not need to. It is usually more effective and less expensive to document the departure in Idaho and arrange coverage waiting at the destination. If the trip is by car, an investigator can follow at a lawful distance across state lines. We recommend the approach that answers your question at a reasonable total cost, and our cross-border coverage planning page explains both options.

Are your investigators allowed to work in other states?

Some neighboring states license private investigators even though Idaho does not. We plan out-of-state coverage so that it complies with the rules of the state where the work happens, and we tell you during the consultation if a destination imposes limits. Delator Group is a licensed Tennessee private investigation firm and applies that standard everywhere it works.

Is recording legal in the destination state?

It depends on the state. Idaho generally allows a participant to record their own conversation, but some states require consent from everyone involved. Our investigators rely on photographs and written observations of public conduct, not audio of other people's conversations, which avoids most of those differences. Your attorney can advise on any recording you made yourself.

How do I know where my spouse is staying?

Often you already have clues: a confirmation email on a shared account, a credit card charge or a conference agenda. Use only information you have lawful access to. If the destination is unknown, we can start coverage at departure and follow the trip, or research records that point to a likely place. Our Idaho surveillance specialists explain the options.

Will out-of-state evidence work in an Idaho court?

Evidence gathered lawfully in another state can generally be presented in an Idaho divorce or custody case, subject to the usual rules of evidence. We write reports with clear times, places and photographs so counsel can lay the foundation. Your attorney and the court decide admissibility, and our investigators can testify about what they personally observed.

My spouse says they work in another state for weeks at a time. Can you check?

Yes. Rotation jobs and long assignments are a common setting for second relationships. We start with records research on addresses, vehicles and filings in the other state, then confirm with short field visits if the records point somewhere specific. A deep-dive background check costs $300 and covers address history across states.

Do time zones affect the case?

They can. North Idaho and the Lewiston area run on Pacific Time while the south keeps Mountain Time, and trips may cross several zones. We quote every observation with its zone so the timeline in your report is unambiguous, which matters when an alibi depends on a specific hour. Our Coeur d'Alene private investigators work in Pacific Time daily.

What if my spouse has already moved to another state?

We can locate them, document the new household if that is relevant and coordinate service of divorce or custody papers there. A basic skip trace costs $102 and field-work locates start at $1,000. Our Idaho skip tracing service explains how a move is usually traced through public records and lawful field inquiries.

How much does travel add?

It depends on the destination and on whether we travel with the subject. For drives, mileage is disclosed in advance. For flights, we quote airfare, lodging and a rental car before booking. Coverage at the destination is often cheaper than sending an investigator with the subject. Every figure is confirmed in writing first.

How quickly can you cover a trip that starts this weekend?

Short notice is possible but limits options, especially for flights and busy resort weekends. Call as soon as you learn the dates, and send whatever details you lawfully have. We will tell you honestly what coverage is realistic in the time available. You can reach us through the confidential contact page or at (629) 310-8667.
