Quick answer

Can a private investigator help with cyberbullying in Idaho?

Yes. An investigator can capture posts and messages with their source and time, research who runs an anonymous account through lawful open-source work, and write a report for a school, police or an attorney. Anything threatening violence or self-harm belongs with 911 first. Research is billed at $100 per hour against a written estimate, as listed on our Idaho pricing page.

01Safety first

When a Message Means Calling 911 Instead of an Investigator

Some online conduct is an emergency, not a research project. If a message names a weapon, shows that the sender knows where the target sleeps or goes to school, or hints that anyone involved may hurt themselves, call 911 or the local sheriff or police department immediately. The 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline answers calls and texts around the clock. Keep the phone, but do not stop to screenshot before you call; families near the capital can reach our Boise private investigators once everyone is safe.

After the immediate danger has passed, a structured inquiry fills a real gap. Patrol officers have limited time for harassment that has not clearly become a crime, and schools must follow their own procedures. We collect and organize the evidence, narrow down the likely sender and show the pattern over time. When the conduct turns into tracking someone's movements, our Idaho stalking investigations take over, and if a young person has gone silent after a threat, the missing child response team can step in alongside police.

  • Threats or a weapon mentioned: call 911
  • Self-harm worries: call or text 988
  • Keep the device; do not delete anything
  • Tell the school if a student is involved

02Idaho law

The Idaho Statutes That Reach Online Harassment

Idaho does not have a criminal statute titled cyberbullying, but several laws cover the conduct. Under Idaho Code § 18-6710, contacting someone by electronic means, including email and text, with intent to annoy, terrify, threaten, intimidate, harass or offend, and using obscene language, threatening injury or sending repeated messages that disturb their peace, is generally a misdemeanor on a first offense and a felony on a second or later one. The 2024 amendment made that repeat-offense felony a real factor, and our misdemeanor defense investigations show how these charges get tested.

Stalking law matters too. Idaho Code § 18-7906 defines nonconsensual contact to include maintaining surveillance on a person by electronic means, and a course of that conduct causing substantial emotional distress can be second-degree stalking. Image abuse is treated more seriously still: § 18-6605, the renumbered video voyeurism statute, makes distributing or threatening to distribute intimate images of an identifiable person to harass or humiliate them a felony. Our recording and privacy law guide and a short case consultation help sort out which provision may apply.

03Evidence

Capturing Posts and Texts So They Survive a Challenge

Online material vanishes fast. Stories expire, posts are deleted, and accounts change names overnight. A cropped screenshot proves little on its own because it usually lacks the profile address, the exact time and the conversation around it. We record each item with its source link and time stamp, export threads where the platform allows it, note account identifiers and keep a collection log showing who captured what and when. That is the same evidence discipline used in our surveillance work across Idaho.

Families should hold on to the original phone or laptop and resist the urge to argue with the sender or bait them into confessing. Idaho is generally a one-party consent state under Idaho Code § 18-6702, so a participant can usually record their own call, but intercepting conversations you are not part of can be a felony carrying up to five years. We stay well inside those limits, as our plain-language overview of what investigators may legally do explains.

04Attribution

Working Out Who Runs an Anonymous Account

Most of these cases come down to identity. We compare writing habits, posting times, reused photos, shared followers, recycled usernames and details only a few people could know. Careful open-source analysis often narrows the field to one or two people. We present that as an assessment backed by exhibits, never as a certainty, because pinning harassment on the wrong student can cause lasting harm. The techniques overlap with our personal information and OSINT services.

Some answers sit in records only a platform or wireless carrier holds, such as subscriber details or login addresses. Those are obtained through a subpoena or court order requested by counsel or law enforcement, not by an investigator acting alone. We assemble the factual groundwork the Idaho attorneys we support need to ask for them. Once a likely sender is identified, a background check on that individual can reveal earlier incidents that matter when a judge weighs a protection order.

05Schools

Idaho School Districts, Colleges and Universities

Idaho Code § 18-917A prohibits student harassment, intimidation and bullying on school property or at school activities, and the statute expressly says those acts can be committed through a phone or through data or software accessed on a computer, network or system. A student who violates it may be found guilty of an infraction. Separately, Idaho Code § 33-1631 sets district duties around bullying information, training and policy, and the legislature revised that section in 2026, so check your district's current policy for its reporting steps.

We shape our report to fit that process: a short summary, a dated exhibit list and the accounts or students involved. Higher education cases run through campus conduct codes instead, whether at Boise State, the University of Idaho in Moscow, Idaho State in Pocatello or BYU–Idaho in Rexburg. Our Moscow investigators, the Pocatello team and our Rexburg private investigators know those college towns, and findings go only to the family or its lawyer unless you approve otherwise.

  • § 18-917A covers bullying by phone, data or software
  • A student violation may be an infraction
  • § 33-1631 governs district policy and training duties
  • Campus cases follow each school's conduct code

06Court options

Protection Orders, Civil Claims and Adult Targets

Adults are targeted as well, by former partners, coworkers, business rivals and strangers. Under Idaho Code § 18-7907, a person can file a verified petition in the magistrate division for a civil protection order based on stalking, threatening communications or malicious harassment within the 90 days before filing. A hearing is generally set within 14 days, and an order can last up to a year and be renewed. Once granted, the respondent has to be served, which Delator's Idaho process servers handle with a signed affidavit.

Defamatory posts may support a lawsuit, but timing is tight: Idaho Code § 5-219 generally allows two years for libel and slander. When harassment reaches the office, our workplace harassment investigations report to the employer or its counsel, and in cases tied to a breakup our dating and relationship investigations sometimes overlap. In every file, Delator reports only to the client or the client's attorney and never contacts the person suspected of the harassment.

07Local context

Small Towns, Two Time Zones and Cross-Border Accounts

In a small Idaho district, one group chat can reach nearly every family in town, and parents often fear that reporting will make things worse. We work quietly, without visiting the school or calling other parents unless you agree, and we keep the inquiry tied to evidence rather than hallway rumor. Posting times matter in attribution, so we note that the Panhandle and the Lewiston and Moscow areas keep Pacific Time while southern Idaho runs on Mountain Time, a detail our Coeur d'Alene investigators build into every timeline.

Harassment also crosses state lines easily. A sender may live in Spokane, Pullman or Clarkston while the target lives in Idaho, which affects where charges or protection orders are filed, and most of our research is remote, so a family in Salmon pays the same hourly rate as one in Meridian. Delator Group is a licensed Tennessee firm and holds itself to that standard here, because Idaho has no statewide investigator license. Our checklist for vetting an investigator lists what to ask before you share sensitive material.

Statewide coverage

Cyberbullying Cases Across Idaho

Because most of this work happens remotely, families anywhere in the state pay the same hourly rate, from the Treasure Valley to the Panhandle. When an interview or school meeting needs someone in person, we assign it from our Meridian investigators, the Nampa team in Canyon County, our Idaho Falls private investigators or the Twin Falls field team. One leadership group reviews each report before it leaves the firm, and the Idaho investigations overview lists every county and city we cover.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is cyberbullying a crime in Idaho?

No statute uses that name, but the conduct can fall under several. Idaho Code § 18-6710 covers harassing or threatening electronic communications, § 18-7906 covers stalking that includes electronic surveillance, and § 18-6605 covers distributing intimate images to harass. For students, § 18-917A reaches bullying by phone or computer. Whether charges are filed is for police and the county prosecutor to decide.

Can you tell me who is behind an anonymous account?

Often we can narrow it to one or two people by analyzing usernames, posting times, photos and shared connections. We report that as an evidence-based assessment rather than a certainty. Records held by platforms or carriers require a subpoena or court order, which counsel or law enforcement must obtain, and our litigation support for Idaho counsel prepares the factual basis for that request.

Will you contact the person harassing my child?

No. We do not confront, message or warn the suspected harasser, and we do not reach out to other families without your permission. Contact can escalate the situation and give the sender a chance to delete evidence. Our report goes to you, and you decide with the school, police or your attorney what happens next.

Does Idaho's school bullying law cover messages sent from home?

Idaho Code § 18-917A focuses on conduct on school property or at school activities, but it states that bullying can be committed through phones, data or computer software, and district policies often address off-campus conduct that disrupts school. Because each district applies its own policy, we organize the evidence to match that district's reporting procedure and leave the disciplinary decision to the school.

Can the evidence support a protection order?

It can. A petition under Idaho Code § 18-7907 is verified and must describe conduct within the 90 days before filing that is likely to continue, and a clean, dated evidence packet makes that petition stronger. Once a magistrate grants the order it must be served, and our Boise process servers and other Delator Field Services servers handle that across the state.

Someone shared fake or intimate images of my teenager. What should I do?

Contact law enforcement right away and do not forward the images to anyone, even to show what happened. Distributing intimate images of an identifiable person to harass or humiliate them is a felony under Idaho Code § 18-6605, and cases involving minors raise additional crimes police will assess. We can record where the images appeared and preserve account details for officers and counsel.

Should I take screenshots of everything?

Screenshots help, but keep the original messages and device too, and write down the profile address, date and time for each item. Do not delete anything or reply to the sender. Before recording any call, read our guide to recording conversations in Idaho. Our capture method adds source links and a collection log so the material is harder to attack later.

How much does a cyberbullying investigation cost?

Research is billed at $100 per hour against a written estimate you approve first, and many matters need a modest number of hours because most of the work is remote. A deep-dive background check on an identified sender is $300. Our Idaho investigator cost guide explains how we build each estimate and what moves the number up or down.

The harasser lives in Washington. Can you still help?

Yes. Senders in Spokane, Pullman or Clarkston often target people across the line in Idaho, and our research does not stop at the border. Where charges or a protection order are filed can depend on where the conduct occurred and where the parties live, so we flag those facts for your attorney. We also note Pacific and Mountain time differences in every timeline we prepare.

Do private investigators need a license in Idaho?

Idaho does not issue a statewide private investigator license. Two cities worth knowing about are Chubbuck, which licenses investigators, and Coeur d'Alene, which licenses security and detective agents, so local rules get confirmed before any in-person step there. Delator Group is a licensed Tennessee firm and holds its Idaho work to that standard, with insured personnel and a written scope first. Our Chubbuck investigators follow the same rules.
